    I upgraded to an Canon EOS RP from a 200D/SL2 and I'm really loving the versatility of the RP, I've got lots of EF-S lenses that I still happily use with the RP for stills & video. One thing I like about the RP is the ability to switch to a 1.6x crop in body, I've just ordered an EF 24-105 F4 knowing that I can extend the focal length to nearly 170MM by applying the crop in body 👍

    Tony, you've hit a home run here. I used to think I was an outcast just because I used EF-S lenses on my EOS R while pretty much everyone else was using all those mega-expensive RF glass. I did give in and bought an RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM, but that's the only RF lens I'm using with my R. All the rest are EF-S lenses which include the following-EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM, EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM, EF-S 18-55mm f/4-5.6 IS STM, and the excellent EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM. I'm not a pixel peeper and neither do I blow my pictures to poster size, so I'm really happy with my EF-S lenses. As you mentioned in the video, they are so much lighter than the RF lenses and I'm thankful for it (my 50-something body can only withstand lugging around so much weight). Plus they are much cheaper too, and with good quality to boot.
    Thanks for your excellent video. I really appreciate it!

    Great thing about Sony it's that Sony don't force you to crop mode when you install an APSC lens on full frame camera. You can choose crop or full frame mode. So, you can film or shoot with the vignette and then crop for stabilization or composition in post. It's a shame Canon (or Nikon) forces to crop mode when installing an APSC lens on full frame cameras

    I have the Canon RP and to keep a low profile I use a pancake 24mm EF-S with the adapter. It produces about a 38mm focal length, which is a nice look. Plus, the setup is very light weight. Great video!

    There is one thing no one mentioned, that EOS RP with EF-S will not record FullHD: such an option disappears from EOS RP features when an EF-S lens is mounted. Only 4K or HD options are available. Don't know how about EOS R in such a case and would be worthy to find out.

    Hi Tony. Great video! I've been using the wonderful EF-S 35/2.8 macro on my R and it gives me a 56mm reach to complement the RF35mm. One suggestion for future videos--try to add more visual interest in the first 12 minutes apart from the flash screens showing each pro and con of the EF-S lenses. For example, at 5:40 you state "I'be gotten some great photos from this tiny, small lenses". It would be great if you could then cut to show some of these photos or even a shot of the camera with one or two of these "small" lenses attached. Just a bit of feedback for the next video. All the best.

      I have this lens being delivered tomorrow. Very excited to use it on my RP. I have the EF 24-105L II and 100-400L II and I tend to grab my smaller 24mm ef-s for general fun shooting around the house. I've gotten many tack sharp images with the little 24. I have no doubt the 35 macro will be just as good. I print my own 13x19" images, everyone loves them. Now that I put the control ring adapter on this camera, game changer! I shoot photos, not video. @$1k, the full frame mirrorless RP is the best value around. Thanks for the vid Tony, enjoyed it bud.

I also bought it for video but again it's really limited in that department, the live focus doesn't work if I'm not pressing the button, even then it's too slow for what it's for. I'm looking to graduate to full frame, but the 6d and the EOS R are the less expensive options at the moment. The problem is that I don't want to be behind with a dinosaur in specs. Some of the limitations you mention for EF-S lenses do not occur with third party crop lenses. I have a Tokina 12-24 which covers full frame from 18-24 and allows vignetted shooting wider which you can crop square as needed. Some of the third party lenses are not all that bad and might already be owned by those upgrading from a Rebel level Canon. Another trick is most lenses cover a larger field when shooting macro so a crop intended macro will fill full frame at some close distance. Again you may not be getting L level glass but there can be an upgrade from full frame that is not covered ion lines per millimeter. Your video mentioned that not everyone is a pro and needs multi-thousand dollar glass. I use an RP and glass that was OK ten years ago. My pictures may not be native R mount quality but they are better than they were when new.

    Remember that you still have 60fps in 720p. I know it's not the best thing in 2020, but somethings I mix 720p60fps footage for slowmotion on my films, even for clients when using the 10-18mm and until now nobody has complained. The delivery is Instagram and Facebook, so it's plenty of resolution, but yes, I wish they enabled the 60fps in 1080p mode. I hope the Canon R5 doesn't have this stupid limitation.

Go beyond that, and you're talking David Lean shooting "Lawrence of Arabia," and if that's your goal, get anamorphic lenses. I'd sooner have an anamorphic lens than a larger sensor. That said, I don't think I'll put my 18-55 mm EF-S zoom on my EOS R -- I'll wait and get an image-stabilized EF-mount zoom lens, first. Like you, I have the Canon T6i for still photography. Great info. Came across this video trying to find out, why my EOS R disables FHDp60. While I'm using EF lenses, it turns out, that the Metabones Speedbooster, that I use to bring the 4k crop down to 1.2 probably negotiates exactly the same as EF-S lenses with the EOS R.

    Hi Tony, i am looking to buy a wide angle lens for my eos R and i need it to be light weight so i can make it the same weight as my prime full frame lenses for quick lense swaps on my weebill s without rebalancing it... so i guess my 2 fav options are the ef 17-40 f4 or that canon efs 10-18 is or sigma 18-35 f1.8 or canon efs17-55 f2.8... what do you think is my best option? And why? Thanks

    • @TonyMellinger
      @TonyMellinger  4 роки тому

      Which lens is your prime full frame lens? That may determine which is the best wide angle lens. The 10-18 and 17-55 are going to be lighter, but come with some limitations so I’d probably suggest the 17-40 for maximum capability. Since you want to balance it on a gimbal anyways, I wouldn’t worry too much about the no IS. I’ve heard good things about the sigma as well, but I’ve never used it. My buddy did have focusing trouble with it though. I suppose I’d suggest the 17-40, and I’m guessing that’ll be the closest weight to a full frame prime for balancing purposes...

    Question: I'm planning on taking my EOS R on holiday with me for video, and I only have EF-S lenses, so should I use my 200D for taking pictures instead of the EOS R? like will the pictures I take on my 200D be better pictures than my EOS R, because of the crop sensor lenses?
    Sorry I didn't clarify. I don't have both cameras yet. I suppose I could just test when I have both cameras, but I was thinking when I buy the EOS R should I buy an RF lens or whatever. As I don't have the money, to buy both new, so I was wondering if it's better buying a pre owned EOS R with an RF lens rather than buy a new EOS R with just an adapter so I can just use my EF-S lenses.
    I mean if my 200D will do a good job of taking stills then I think I could just buy the new EOS R for video, and use my 200D for stills, but if the still images would be much better on the EOS R with an RF lens, then I think maybe I should buy Pre owned.
    So I guess I'm asking your advice on what I should do. Either buy a new EOS R and use my 200D for stills, or buy a pre owned EOS R with an RF lens?

    • @TonyMellinger
      @TonyMellinger  4 роки тому +1

      The 200D is a great camera, but what if you bought an EOS R and sold the 200D? I guess it all depends on what type of photos you want to take, the EOS R is all around a much better camera, even with the limitations of the crop on the EF-S lenses. If I were you I wouldn’t take two cameras if I didn’t need to and get by with just the EOS R. The RF glass is really expensive still, except for the 35mm f1.8 and 24-105mm which are both great lenses. The other option would be to buy some EF glass for your 200D and just use that for awhile. I honestly think no matter which way you go, you can get by though!

      On the mirrorless, the older STMs work well. I have the Mark I 24-105 (L) also and it works great on the R62. The adapter allows for EF & EF-S onto Canon mirrorless. Third party lenses also adapt and the autofocus works fine.

    Is my efs 24mm actually 24mm on my eos r? I'm aware that ef lens on a aps-c sensor has a crop and actually makes the lens have slightly more range. Is it the same thing but in reverse? An efs lens on a full frame sensor..

    • @TonyMellinger
      @TonyMellinger  4 роки тому +1

      Technically yes and no. It still has the optics of a 24mm but it’s cropped 1.6x into the frame which is closer to a 35mm (38.4mm). It’s the same as a crop sensor body.

    Hey man! Great video - I have a question though: If I use a 10-18mm on an EOS R, what would be the effective focal length @ 10mm? Would it just be the 1.6x crop factor or the 1.7x or would it get both crop factors on it?

    • @TonyMellinger
      @TonyMellinger  4 роки тому +1

      I think it’s just the 1.6 crop factor. It still needs the crop because the lens is built for an aps-c camera. Still.. that’s like 16mm on a full frame.

      All glass in 4k will have a 1.75x crop. On a canon crop camera, you would normally have a 1.6x crop.
      So the 10-20 you mentioned, on the T6i, 77D, 90D etc, would be a 16-32mm FF equivalent. But on the R in 4K mode,
      it would become a 17.5 - 35mm lens. So there is a crop on every type of glass you attach to the EOS R in 4K mode.

    3 years ago i picked up an 80d 18-200 and 10-18 for an iceland trip, didnt really know at the time 100% what i was after, decided to go look at some lenses today 24-70ii 2.8 and 70-200ii 2.8. Should i be really looking at lenses like that on my 80D? I do like the Eos R alot but ill lose too much on the 80 to sell it. But it is better news i can use efs lenses on the eos r so they wouldnt be completely redundant

    • @TonyMellinger
      @TonyMellinger  4 роки тому +1

      The 80D is an incredible camera! The only disadvantage to buying EF lenses for your 80D if you were to move on the the EOS R is the EF lenses are old technology and won’t hold their value. The 70-200 and 27-70 are both amazing lenses and will actually improve the performance of your 80D. If you are still satisfied with your 80D and don’t feel like it’s limiting you, I’d hold out and use that 80D as long as you can.
