    Just another entry to add to the never ending bike lotto win list. BMW have said if i ordered now it won't be available until October. The wife says if I order one now she won't be here in October win win lol

    "if you can live with the looks".
    Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. To me the s1000xr looks much prettier than the GS. Much more modern and sportier. The only drawback i see is the absents of a drive shaft but it gives you so much more in return.

    Great and very honest review, thanks for that.. I bought one 2 weeks ago and i'm loving it. I don't mind the looks as it lulls people into a false sense of security until you gun it and leave them in your wake. The handling is sublime and so very different to my K1300S that I absolutely loved, as I had the 12 and 13 since 2006.Its not as good on fuel as I would have hoped, as managed to get 200mpt on the K1300S might getter better as it loosens up, but its fast capable and fun and that is all that matters. Cant wait for the first service to get it fully unleashed.

      Mark
      I will have to agree with you for I find this motorcycle to be absolutely beautiful. The ugliest motorcycle line up has to be Ducati (but that is a personal observation). The biggest failure on this machine is the windscreen - it's sort of like tit's on a boar hog, its there but it is absolutely useless. Congratulations on having this beautiful motorcycle.

    Hi TMF, I test rode the xr last week and I couldn't agree more with you. The bike felt a bit too buzzy for my liking. The vibrations are definitely there but aren't too bad. It wouldn't put me off. It's a great bike but the 1200gs feels a lot more relaxed to ride. It's just the better touring bike. The design of the xr doesn't help either. I wouldn't call it ugly but, ah, it's ugly, who am I kidding.
    Quit your job and focus on reviewing bikes.

      juefis ....that would be nice Juefis!! ...and agree, the GS is a great bike with very little not to like except maybe the "characterful" boxer and the odd looks - neither are major detractors for me. On the XR the fugliness, vibes and long stretch clutch are enough to make me stick with the GS. I did like the XR engine and it's light handling though, definitely a very good machine if you're in the market for a hot ship....cheers for your kind comments - all the best - TMF

    Thanks for vid Steve, just picked up my red XR a few days ago and agree with the your comments about scaffolding and mudguard bit, have removed both for now. Amazing bike to ride around the twisty roads of Cornwall and I love the cruise control and the quick shiftier. I also agree with your the point about the vibrations through the hand bars, luckily it has cruise control, so you can take your hands off the bars when needed. I actually like the look of this bike, although would have prefer it in black, maybe there will be a black one along in the future hey. My XR is my only bike at present and it seems to do everything fair well, my wife made me sale my others due to the cost of the XR. Thanks again for your honesty and in-depth review.

      Paul Fowler Thanks Paul (who's Steve by the way?? ;0) It is undoubtedly a great bike, well done for getting on with the looks of it - I wish I did, I'd definitely have one once my GS expires if they gave it a revamp in the looks department. It certainly seems an excellent all rounder and very comfortable....strange about the vibes though, you'd expect them on a twin (I don't get them on my GS by the way)...but a 4 cylinder should be smooth as butter. Small point, overall a lovely machine, enjoy and take it easy on that beast! All the best - TMF.

    As my son is on the cusp of parting with his cash for the latest 2016 version, thought I'd re-watch your excellent review. One thing I have noted is the lack of tire-pressure monitoring - not even available as an OEM option - not the sort of omission I'd expect from BMW. I'm beginning to conclude the XR was subject to far stricter cost control measures which may explain the lack of monitoring, and also would explain the cable clutch. No adjustment is just penny-pinching.....

    Excellent review buddy! Like you I am not a fan of the looks and this is such an important element for me. I'll keep the Speed Triple thank you. Beautiful bike and throw some soft panniers over it - just as versatile! Quick non related question: just bought an EJK fuel controller for the CRF. Worth fitting? Do they make much difference? Thanks!

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  9 років тому +1

      The Crumble Hi mate - glad you concur with my views on the looks - thought I might be missing something but it seems BMW really struggle to come up with classy looking machines. I can just about get on with the GS, and love the R Nine T - but other than that, not sure what their designers are thinking. Shame, 'cos on paper and in the saddle they make great bikes. On the EJK front I haven't found it's made much difference, but assume it is looking after my engine for me (given it comes pre-loaded with a map for the exhaust mods by default and is - I assume - keeping the mixture right). I know some owners have played with the mappings, I've left mine as stock for now, I dare say you could get more poke from the bike by playing with these. If you do, please let me know! All the best - TMF.

      +bassman2277 Nah sorry mate, something about that just doesn't do it for me - I find it a little uninspiring, it's a shame 'cos I know these machines always get stunning write-ups in reviews. Bit late to the party I know, but I only just discovered your UA-cam channel recently.
    I've always been a four cylinder man, and as such I just can't get on with the lumpy twins that are available. One which springs to mind is your review of the KTM Super Adventure S, now that is one bike with a horrible front end - it looks like a sad person raising their eyebrows.
    I like this bike, I even like the looks, I like the performance. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder of course. I am seriously tempted - the only other contender is the Kwack Versys 1000.
    But I wanted to see the BMW in action so many thanks for doing all this.
    So frustrating this lockdown, but no reason to fret, let's all research, reflect and dream.
    Keep safe all!

    Thanks for the message. No vibrations as I have the 2017 model variant with different rubber on the headstock mounts. It is a bit vibey especially on the pegs but not dissimilar to my K1300s at 5,500. Revs.

    • @Grint-XR
      @Grint-XR Місяць тому

      @@TheMissendenFlyer there is a little vibe at about 6500 but defiantly not the issue a load of the main bike magazine reviews claimed it had .. in my time I've owned many bikes ( mostly 4 cyl) since the mid 70's and hand on heart and I've ridden many that were worse. Bar end weights will sort it anyway and the 2017 gen 1 onwards had a rubber damper fitted under the risers but still the XR seemed to attract the bad press as a vibey bike ... 😎😎

      +Chris X Well it's all a matter of personal taste Chris - I really wish I did like the looks of this otherwise great bike - stick this engine in a GS and I'd buy! I love the looks of the Multistrada but again (IMO) the S1000RR looks pig ugly with those asymmetric lights....so a love child of the two doesn't do it for me I'm afraid! :0) Thanks for watching and commenting, all the best - TMF

    Very interesting. I'm sure it's a lovely bike with a lovely engine and will win a lot of friends as time goes by.
    The front end styling does remind me somewhat of the old Triumph tiger, like you had?
    I can see what you mean when you compare some elements to the GS. But for me that heavy clutch, especially when you consider the amount of traffic we are often in and going back to a chain drive would probably be a deal breaker for me?
    My GS has the 'Shift Assist' gear change and I love it, wouldn't be without it now. Suffice to say I'm still very much loving the GS and think that BMW have got so much of it right. It is one of 'the' best bikes available on the market today. Just saying!

    Great review, I have been riding the 1200GS LC for some time, wanted to buy another bike so I a tested the XR in the Alps. The engine is amazing but you really feel that it carries the weight higher especially in tight turns (Stelvio) and it actually looks better than on pictures. When using the clutch a lot, the hand gets so tired, really heavy clutch indeed. So I decided to stick with a flattwin and bought the GS adventure for long distant comfort, because of the shaft drive and better handling in tight bends. I feel there is too much need for speed with the XR while for me the GS suits my purposes better. But the engine...the best.

    Good review mate. I have had a 13 and now a 15 GS and my Oct 14 ordered XR has just landed but I don't think I want it now. I am still in GS Love mode, every bike I test ride I dismiss as soon as I jump back on the GS.
    The things that re putting me off the XR at the moment are:
    a) the looks
    b) the vibes
    c) the heavy clutch (I commute in slow tight traffic)
    d) the price, should be cheaper than the GS methinks
    e) potential heat from the engine on legs in summer (I am in Oz)
    f) the loss on my 15 Trade
    g) the need to massively refarkle
    h) seat height feels about the same as the GS, I prefer a bit lower
    i) It feels a little top heavy at low / walking speed
    Anyway, I will need to test ride one as I have only done UA-cam test rides so far!

    Think I'll wait for BMW to fix the Vibes before deciding whether it's the XR or the KTM 1300 GT .Personally I subscribe to the Insect analysis of the front - end and I like it more , the more I see it , rather like my loving the Tri 509 looks , dislike at first but later I cancelled my Tri 595 order and bought a 509 , which was a mistake because when flat-out on the way to the Tri rally I found I was being overtaken by my previous bike - A sprint with the new owner , his wife and the family dog ! That dog was too much and the 509 had to go .

      +TheMissendenFlyer that's true. To be honest, despite the weird gap in front, I'm still interested in that bike. Only people moaning on web forums about the vibrations makes me wonder is it that bad? Currently I'm riding a V2 engine bike which vibes a lot, so not sure if I can even feel the XR vibes.

      @TheMissendenFlyer  9 років тому

      +MaximilianScott Best to ride one yourself and see - I found the vibes quite noticeable at around 75-80mph (just the point at which I cruise!) - surprising given the configuration of the engine....I don't get any vibes on my lumpy ol' GS!

    Mr. Flyer- I went back a year or two to watch this review, and am intrigued. As a question I have asked before about another bike, do you think this one could handle the odd dirt road? I agree that the Donald Duck resemblance to this bike is remarkable, and I believe if I owned one I would have a local painter actually make the front end into DD's visage! I have now added the S100XR to the list of motorcycles I will be looking at as my next one.

    I can't decide between the 2016 S1000XR and the 2017 Tiger sport 1050 .. the BMW is way superior, but more expensive. The Triumph as that British class, and let's be honest the 126 hp are more than necessary for an everyday ride.. with your experience with those 2 bike, what's your most honest advice?

    Sat on both the r1200gs and this bike the other day and trying to pick one is a nightmare! I like the top end on the XR but the seat felt like concrete compared to the GS. I'm surprised you find it more comfortable.

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  8 років тому +1

      Did I say I found it more comfortable? (Must watch this back!) both bikes actually feel very similar to sit on and I can see why choosing would be difficult - to me it would just come down to looks, I far prefer the way the GS looks over the S1000XR. Good luck with your choice, you can't go wrong with either!

    • @eoghanhennessy15
      @eoghanhennessy15 8 років тому

      +TheMissendenFlyer The GS looks better, but I wouldn't exactly say I like the GS for its looks. I suppose I'm worried the XR might be unsuited to touring, in that case it's no better than a sport bike. I'm also worried the GS might be a bit too plain for the weekend rides, although I find the latter to be more unlikely.
      The BMW sales rep kept asking me if i was a speed freak or not, I didn't really know how to answer. I would say i'm not, but when riding in a group i'd usually make more progress in the twisties, more of a confidence thing than ability i suppose.
      I tend to keep my speed in corners rather than blast the straights - i mean, once you're over 100 on a country road, you're asking for a nasty surprise (car pulling out, horse muck, tractor, jumps)

The GS is no slouch by the way, stick her in dynamic mode and wind on and she doesn't hang about....it's just the XR feels quicker (although to me not as much as all the magazine reviews made out). For me the S1000XR engine in a GS frame would be the way to go!!

    • @eoghanhennessy15
      @eoghanhennessy15 8 років тому

      TheMissendenFlyer Yeah I think you mentioned that in the video - that it's not exactly unmanageable power compared to a sport bike. You've made my decision a bit easier Sir, so thank you, but I think I might keep waiting for a while. Having bought and sold a few bikes I want my next one to be a real keeper. Just a waiting game now for the '13 GS to come down in price. Insurance at 24 y/o adds another £1000 a year onto the asking price :(

    Seems like this bike also competes with the Triumph Tiger Sport in the sports adventure non off-road category Given that you owned the earlier version 1050 for years and did a review of the 2016 Tiger Sport not too long ago, I was sort of expecting you to offer an opinion about how the Sport stacks up to it. What do you think?

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  7 років тому

      The BMW is a MUCH faster bike and feels far more high tech - in a different league really. The Triumph is a much more solid work horse bike with a great engine (and I love it!). The BMW is the better bike by any measure, but I can't get on with the looks of it...

  • @thelikeablerider8800
    @thelikeablerider8800 8 років тому

    interesting that you think it's an ugly bike, I love the looks....apart from the pannier scaffolding!😜 Don't think that this bike should be compared to the GS which us a full adventure bike. This thing is a comfortable sports bike, and can only be compared to the Multistrada, and now the new Super Duke GT. There're no other sports tourers with this much power, it's definitely no GS.

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  8 років тому

      +TheLikeableRider Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that eh? I compared it with the GS because that is a bike I know very well, and to be fair often in the past the GS and Multistrada are compared - I take your point that this is more "sports" than "tourer" and I did try and make that clear in my review. Hey, how is the wind protection in both positions?
    I am currently on a naked FZ1 and I am looking for a Sport/Turning hybrid to have fun but also decent wind protection in case I have to use the motorway for a longer period, like 1 or 2 hours straight. I'd like to be able to sit upright, set cruse control to about 140 km/h (85 mp/h) without to much wind on the helmet.

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  9 років тому +1

      +Alexander Mielchen (MiLeX) Wind protection was good - not quite as good as the GS but not far off. I didn't try both positions, just the one it was set at. I'm sure an MRA Vario screen would cure any buffet a taller rider may have....

    It's a shame they don't make something like this that hasn't been beaten by the fugly stick and mashed into square proportions. The 1200RS is cool on the sheet for electronics, but it's just a bit too funky/odd isn't it? I 100% agree Carmelo - this is a fabulous bike to ride...but oh my eyes my eyes!!

      Hah, if they could get an exciting machine in this category they could get rid of the S1000XR and the R1200RS one is fugly and the other funky. Who wants to pay a premium price for something that isn't even styled well? I can imagine driving down the road thinking that it's like settling for the perfect but ugly wife, never quite thrilling.

    Hi, and how good is it as everyday city bike? How it works at low rpm-s, from 3 to 6 or 7 hundred? Is lack of power at that range or not? And how good is it at low speed, for example if you are in traffic jam and are moving couple miles with a very slow speed?

      Well I didn't get to ride it in much solid traffic but that engine is smooth, so I imagine it's fine around town, although it's physically quite a big bike for filtering (doable though, given I filter no problem on my GS)....thanks for watching - TMF

    Hi MS, I like the latest Bmw review, can you get hold of a new R1200RS and give it the once over for me as I may be interested in putting this model on my list? I would want the low suspension model (760mm seat ) but would be eager too find out what your opinion was of this bike, regards, Colin.

    A very informative review for me with the comparisons to the R1200GS which is a bike I'm always tempted by, but doesn't quite do it for me. The S1000XR might just be what I'm looking for if I can get the comfort of the GS with the performance and howl of a 4 cylinder engine. How does passenger comfort compare between this and the GS?

      I would imagine it's exactly the same from a pillion point of view, maybe a bit more scary on the XR than the GS due it's engine!! :0)

      Definitely needs some sort of backrest with that sort of acceleration.

    Lovely. Bike. Should test ride one lol
    How much they going for? Ridiculous money?
    Don't like the scaffolding for the panniers though.

      Mark Morris ....I didn't ask the price but I would guess base bike for around £13.5K and by the time you've spec'ed up the essential extras - probably not much change out of £15.5K!! Lot of money for a bike innit?!

      Well yeah. But was in Honda today to test ride the new vfr800X. That was nice. But again once it's spec is to the standard things it's bloody expensive. Honda want £280 for heated grips. Ridiculous
      I'm still swaying to the Versys 1000.
      Once the honeymoon has been booked and paid for then I'll be going to put a deposit down for one.

    Do you get much buffeting at high speeds? Or is it reasonable
