Great review, got the pilot 4's on 2 weeks ago and just blasted 580 miles through Wales in 2 days. Outstanding bike and the tyres made a leap in my confidence attacking twisties. Let's hope the sun can make an appearance in the next few weeks so we can see more of these fantastic bikes on our pot holed roads!! Ride safe Count!
excellent review. I have the 2016 model. Heavier bar ends installed on mine.I don't notice the vibrations. Mostly ride canyons in the states. All day comfort, no fatigue.I'll upgrade mine when its worn out to another one.
I've just bought a 2018 one. Stepping up from a Tracer 900 which was a lot of fun to ride. Thought your review was bang on. Everyone mentions the vibes. On my mates recommendation I've gone and bought a 42 tooth rear sprocket to lower the cruising revs. I haven't fitted it yet as I'm still not sure I want to up all the gears. The "Cuban rider" mentions the smaller rear sprocket in his reviews. Good vid.
Very good review! I took possession of my 2017 in red with the factory low suspension a number of weeks ago, and I have to agree with pretty much every opinion expressed!
I bought my 2017 model in January (also after a 45 min ride). Blue also, and you've summed it up nicely. I still get some buffeting at 90-100 with the Puig + deflector, but that's about the only issue. You're right about the speed sensation, hitting 90 in second is madness, god knows where 6th tops out. I love the overrun popping in dynamic mode, particularly in 2nd at slow speeds - the throttle seems to have this extra bit of negative turn, so when coasting in second, you can marginally roll on (basically no throttle) then over-close the throttle and it lets out a lovely series of pops and bangs. It's a real head-turning bike. Downsides? I think 6th gear could be a little higher, allowing cruise at 80mph at 4K for longer journeys, the vibes could be made even less, and sometimes neutral is hard to find from 1st (more than 50% I end up in 2nd then back to neutral). Sometimes it feels a little too good... :)
Craig Mason hi Craig, totally agree with everything you said. You should check out Cuban Riders latest video, he changed the rear sprocket to increase the length of 6 gear.
Good review and nice to see someone not being a complete headbanger, as I am much more interested in the bike as an all rounder with only occassional periods of ehem...making progress
Hi mate.you hit the nail on the head on this review of 2017 xr 1000. iv a boney was also lol. just had my 600 miles service and restriction removed. ready for some fun.ride safe🏍
No mate, I am in the military and we often get together from Windsor and pick a weekend where we can stretch some legs. We were in Wrexham then rode through Snowdonia to Brecon. I did however meet the lads on Sunday.
What can i say Count not a lot really, youv'e covered just about everything. What a fantastic bike it is i have the 2015 model and i have cured the vibes with R&G heavy bar ends to a point where they are no problem.Covered 238 miles on Sunday what a blast.
Great review. Considering this bike they always market it at the older rider who can't do sports bikes anymore though. I'm younger 26 but I've had back problems so I'll never get on a sports bike, so need something upright. Most of my bike use is an all dayer at the weekends, no commuting. I'm on a naked just now and also getting a bit fed up of the wind blast.
cmal90 totally get where you are coming from. I started on a naked and it's great for day rides but anything more and he wins blast can get a bit much.
Just bought a 2017 S1000XR after riding Multistrada 1200S and R1200GS the last year. Did'nt experiance any vibes in handle bars that I cant live with. Not worse than other bikes. My biggest "disaponitment" is tha lack of torque in low/mid range. The GS i much stronger in 3000-6000 rpm. The engine goes mental over 8500rpm.
Cool review, thank you. You mentioned that your first bike was a F800R - I'm in the same position now, I am riding a 2015 F800R and loving it. However, going for longer rides, my neck scream at me (I'm 1.90 and head gets most of the wind - even with a larger Puig screen). How many kilometers have you been riding your F800R before getting the XR? Lastly, have you done "gravel" roads at all? Here in South Africa most people opt for the 1200GS - although most never see any gravel ...
Roland Jungwirth thanks for the comment. I did around 6000 miles before moving to the XR. I have been on gravel with the XR and it was fine, the GS would be better but I agree they normally never get to see off road conditions so why bother. Unless you are looking for pure touring comfort then the GS is a great bike. XR is so much fun though.
Thank's for your answer. Pretty much the same position I'm in now - around 9000km on my F800R. I think the GS is the more "sensible" option, but damn that XR is fun ...
Good review mate, I'd love one as a second hog for the alps trips etc, can I ask what settings is your drift set to? I have one now, gave it a go thought was grainy, maybe catch you out on the same roads matey!!! Sure I will.
Great review of such a fantastic machine.. I have the 2016 model, I'm really enjoying the bike. You look local to me as you were near loomies.. if you fancy some company on a ride out sometime, would be good seeing the two bikes together. Lovely colour by the way 👍
Thanks, both models are fantastic bikes. I actually live a little way off from Loomies, I was down that way for the day, I am not that far from it though about 1.5 hours. I do try to get down there for some of the meets at Loomies so keep an eye out :)
Great review on a great sports bike. Before you buy one,it's important you ask yourself what you will be using for.If you want this bike as a comfortable sports bike,it's probably the best there is.However,if your intended use is touring,it falls well short of the mark.It lacks any sort of engine braking so if you are moving at any kind of pace, you are on the brakes all the time. The bike when you tour on it,becomes tiring due to the fact this engine is just too revvy, it feels like it needs two more gears to bring the revs down, the thing is screaming at you all the time and those vibrations are are still there,in the pegs, the seat, the frame,in fact, the whole F----g bike.Sure, all in line 4's vibrate but not at this frequency, you don't feel this on the RR.This why I maintain, the XR is not a sports tourer.it's a sports bike.If you want to tour, get a GS.
Auld Reekie Biker hi, thanks for the comment really glad you like he review. Here's an Amazon link to the screen www.amazon.co.uk/Windshield-Touring-Puig-15-16-clear/dp/B01AYXWS7U/ref=sr_1_1?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1469369904&sr=1-1&keywords=s1000xr+puig+touring+screen
Great review Count, had a a test ride in the 2016 XR back in November so keen to back and see the 2017 improvement. For me it was a great bike if I was single just not convinced it would do the 2 up touring as well as a GS. The bike is epic though, the power is very addictive. Safe riding 🤙🏼
wesoly757 hi not sure where I say it has 180 bhp, I just watched it back and couldn't find it. In the first 20 seconds I throw up the stats in text and it say 165bhp. If I have said it and missed it then I am wrong as it's 165bhp. Cheers.
Nice vid, thanks. Do you have the BMW Navigator V or VI? Also, is there any difference (smaller, larger, etc) in the passenger section of the stock seat vs the HP comfort seat?
Trevor Herrington thanks for the comments Trevor. The heated grips are the same, no change. I find them fine, could be a little warmer on the really cold days though.
Hello again :) I did like you said - test rode 2015 model. It's vibe one. Do it disturbed me - no at all !! Is 2017 you been test road pop in exhaust when deaccelerating and downshifting ?? Thanks
Przemyslaw Luczak hi, both my 2016 and 2017 model exhausts pops when in Dynamic mode, not so much in Road or Rain mode as the valve to make it pop is closed in those modes. Did you like the 2015 model?
Absolutely ! Love it !!! All that talking about vibration, some model do, some don't, etc... In my opinion ALL of them are same. It's just rider/owner sensivity. If someone said "my s1xr is vibey one" it doesn't mean his bike is different the others, it'd mean hi will be feel vibrations on any example. Bike is great and offers so much great things we should focus on and forgot about little vibrations, they don't take away even 1% pleasure from ride it !
Hi there Count great vlogs by the way on on the back of your comments i now own a brand new xr in blue having had the s100r for two years the vibe thing aint a problem and i would recommend this bike o anyone i love it .
Alistair Hoblin hey Alistair, thanks for the comment really appreciate it. So glad I helped with your choice of bike and that you are enjoying it. Happy and safe riding bud.
Great video. I'd like to test ride the XR next year when i upgrade. Currently on a Tracer 700... I'm going to have to take a change of underwear with me aren't i?
Thanks EI. So the stock tires are Bridgestone Battlax Sport Touring tires and I have no issue with them. Its a shame on a review that's 15:14 long that you were not able to say weather or not you liked this BMW S1000 XR. Don't hold it in boy. Tell us how you truly feel about it! LOL. G'Day from the Land of OZ.
I ride a cheap Yamaha Tracer 5,000 RPM zero vibes, BMW sells you a 19,000 Euro bike with vibes & then you have to buy bar ends to fix it. If that was so BMW would fit bar ends stock. It's a great bike I just don't get why BMW sold these knowing about the problem. Hello.
Overtook little white car at about 2.00 then stayed in the middle lane, the Kia sportage came up behind & Had to go around you, next car you overtook was at about 3.00. Dont take offence though just an observation & good review of the bike by the way.

excellent review. I have the 2016 model. Heavier bar ends installed on mine.I don't notice the vibrations. Mostly ride canyons in the states. All day comfort, no fatigue.I'll upgrade mine when its worn out to another one.
Canadian Triple thanks. It's a great bike.
Another great vlog and so upfront. The XR is my next bike this year as it was such a great test ride. Keep em coming. Thank you.

First class review of the bike, probably the best I've seen. Thank you!
Thanks, really appreciate the comment.

Thanks, glad you liked it. Heavy bar ends are deffo the way to go if you do experience vibes, as you said it pretty much resolves the issue.
Great review damn the new color scheme are awesome
Noel Flores thanks Noel. Yeah the Blue is a great colour for the XR.
Is that Loomies Cafe' at the end of your vid? Excellent vid incidentally. You should be a BMW salesman!
RT1200BIKER thanks, glad you liked it. Yep that was Loomies

Super Goofy cheers for the comment matey, glad you liked the review.
I have an S1000R and I'm thinking about the XR. Here in the the US they skipped the 2017 model.
Just bought a 2017 S1000XR after riding Multistrada 1200S and R1200GS the last year. Did'nt experiance any vibes in handle bars that I cant live with. Not worse than other bikes. Dude, you mentioned the aftermarket windshield is great. I didn't catch the brand / name of windshield?
Hey, I'm sure I just saw you Maidenhead at the lights by the BMW garage, hog looks nice!
ROGUE Rider hi, yep that was me. Was you in BWM for the BBQ?
Cool review, thank you. You mentioned that your first bike was a F800R - I'm in the same position now, I am riding a 2015 F800R and loving it. Roland Jungwirth GS is a great bike, you won't be disappointed
Great view. What setup do you use for recording your commentary?
slideslipping hi, thanks for the comment. I use the Drift Ghost S HD with the standard drift mic installed in my helmet.
Good review mate, I'd love one as a second hog for the alps trips etc, can I ask what settings is your drift set to? I have one now, gave it a go thought was grainy, maybe catch you out on the same roads matey!!! Sure I will.
ROGUE Rider thanks for the comment. I have mine on Bit Rate High, Scene Vivid, Res 1080p, frame fps 60, field of view 160
Cool, cheers lover

Brian smith A great point! I am thinking about selling my S1000R and getting the XR or the Kawasaki ZX10R 2016 or newer.
Hey - How about comparing the XR to the R1200RS??
You still have that beast?
Great review................should I trade my 2016 GS or maybe get XR as well ? decisions decisions
Steve Williams thanks Steve. Tough choice mate, both are good bikes.
one of the best reviews on this bike on UA-cam.
I have bought an xr, delivery next month.
Have u a link for the touring screen pls.

Count what lid you wearing mate, it looks like it would match my Red XR perfectly
Rob
Rob B hi Rob, it's the BMW System 6 EVO helmet and it look good with the Red XR as some of my vlogs from last year will show 😀
Cheers ill look for them, had a mare trying to find a lid that matched
Rob
Nice real world review. Luv the bike.
Stizzy Grayson cheers Stizzy glad you enjoyed it.

Nice review...you've convinced me, I'm getting one!
Phil Chalk thanks, good man, enjoy it. 😀
Nice review. I'm dying to buy that bike. I'm still on my beloved F800s but I'm getting to old and my wrists are in pain.
wesoly757 hi not sure where I say it has 180 bhp, I just watched it back and couldn't find it. In the first 20 seconds I throw up the stats in text and it say 165bhp. If I have said it and missed it then I am wrong as it's 165bhp. Cheers.
Count Miffed My mistake, looks like not just my wrist getting old but my eyes as well.
wesoly757 lol, no problem. Just as an FYI, it's very hard to even notice the power difference between the 2016 and 2017 XR.
Nice vid, thanks. Do you have the BMW Navigator V or VI? Also, is there any difference (smaller, larger, etc) in the passenger section of the stock seat vs the HP comfort seat?
Rambler358 hi, I very recently got the VI. The HP seat is a bit better not much bigger really but deffo more comfortable
So would the HP seat be better for a passenger in your opinion?
Rambler358 my girlfriend likes it more then the standard seat.
Cool, thanks!
Excelent review, thankyou!
Nice helmet to! Can you please tell us the details of your helmet?
Anyone know when this will come to the USA? The 2017 Model?
Gotallofthem1 contact Motorade itself
Forgot to ask if the heated grips have improved?
Trevor Herrington thanks for the comments Trevor. The heated grips are the same, no change. I find them fine, could be a little warmer on the really cold days though.
Heated grips are poor.☹️
Hello again :)

Alistair Hoblin link doesn't work for me 😰
Lol is this the profession of btw motorcyclists??? Because that my next one after the f800r lol
Do you notice differences on HP compared to 2016 model?
John Floan not really, it's such a small change that I think it would be hard to notice.
Thanks good vid plenty of info
Great video.
I'd like to test ride the XR next year when i upgrade.
Currently on a Tracer 700... I'm going to have to take a change of underwear with me aren't i?
Max Jackson thanks Max. A change of underwear would be recommended yes 😂
Nice vid mate
benny532017 cheers mate.
No problem at all , ride a v twin and you will not complain
Great review,thks.
Very thorough review. I have one additional question: what are the stock tires, and what's your opinion of them?
Thanks EI. So the stock tires are Bridgestone Battlax Sport Touring tires and I have no issue with them. That said on this new bike I immediately changed them for Road Pilot 4's, as after my accident last year I had some confidence issues with the bike (totally unfounded, just accidents play with your mind) and therefore I opted to change the tires for some high end ones to give me a little confidence boost. Stocks are fine, Road Pilots are betting.
How was the reliability with it?
Hi, never had any issues with reliability.
@@CountMiffed I have a gs and I'm thinking about changing it for one of these. I'm torn.
Thorough review
-ED case- thanks mate

Becker Inal thanks.
There was a bbq! Dam! No was driving past, thought it looked busy. Another time hopefully!
ROGUE Rider yeah, I always manage to seek out food 😀
Ha ha

gewrgios margetis cheers mate thanks for the comment.
Great video, I'm biased I have the same one :)
Oz Rider thanks. Clearly you have great taste in bikes 😀
Great review. I better not go and test one , I don't wanna spend £15k. 😎
Psycho Paul yeah you had best stay away mate :)
Its a shame on a review that's 15:14 long that you were not able to say weather or not you liked this BMW S1000 XR.

Frank Stocker hi. Yeah I agree, especially the XRs that we’re really bad.
Criticises the car exiting the roundabout after sitting in the middle lane on the motorway with an empty inside lane...🙄
How can you stand cars passing you...
Let them smell your dust 😁
Lane hogger!
robc3586 i guess you mean that car driver 😀
Crikey that was quick, no sorry mate i did mean you.
robc3586 in aim to please 😀. Really where was i hogging?
Overtook little white car at about 2.00 then stayed in the middle lane, the Kia sportage came up behind & Had to go around you, next car you overtook was at about 3.00.
Dont take offence though just an observation & good review of the bike by the way.
robc3586 no offence bud. Thanks for the comment, I will have a look at those points in the vid later. Glad you liked it.
