How to BMW e30: Power Steering Sound: diagnosis walkthrough - Need Help!

Trying to figure out a power steering issue: this video is a walkthrough about how to diagnose why the steering wheel is vibrating and making noise at idle plus my normal chat.

Had a similiar issue with my '89 E30 318 - that whiney, graunchy sound on turning the steering wheel. I traced the bug down to worn seals inside the power steering rack, a common fault with units 20, 30+ years old such as the Z3. I replaced the stock rack out and installed a reconditioned E46 purple tag. That's my 10 cents... hope you've sorted the problem out since then.

I installed another rack and a full chase bays kit. So far so good with no noises.

What radiator did you buy and what fan setup did you use? Spal high flow fan with the garagistic mounts?

Hi Gabe! Thanks for watching. I used a Spal 16” puller low profile with the Spal wire mounting straps that mount the fan to the radiator through the fins. I worked with Igor at CaTuned who advised me to this. This was done before the garagistic and condor mounts came out. I live in Arizona and the car does not go over 1/2 on the temp gauge when idling in 115F heat. I’m currently in the process of putting a 16” pusher on my condenser and converting the ac to r134.

@@thedriversapex I’ve been victim to the bmw fans on a e36 m3 and am weary of the e30 fan. I’d like to do the electric conversion with the garagastic mounts and spal fan but I’m on the fence about the high flo or low profile fan. I will be doing an upgrade to the radiator with most likely an Ireland engineering radiator just because they are close by.

Thanks for watching! I was getting a groaning and creaking sound. What are you experiencing? Sometimes an automotive stethoscope allows you to pinpoint the issue. Works wonders. LMK if you have any questions.

@@thedriversapex assuming that mine is leaking, when turning the steering the sound is loud almost like the pump has no fluid, where its leaking from i have no idea
