Alot of people don't realize that Fedor was a black belt in judo but he was ranked as a grandmaster in combat sambo. I don't know of anyone else in MMA that is a ranked GM .
Fedor was ahead of his time like GSP. Complete mixed martial artists that dominated their era. Fedor was crazy quick. His fights are never boring because he always go for the kill. Always advancing. Great analysis, Sonny!
@Alex Amaya his defense might not be as good but his takedown ability is better than khabibs because of fedors versatility. Khabibs uses his superior physique and always shoots in for a double leg whereas fedor has many more tactics as seen in the video.
"Outside Trip" - O Soto Gake "Inside trip" (opponents opposite leg) - Ko Uchi gake "Inside trip" (same side) - O Uchi Gari/Gake "Scoop Slam" - looks like it could be a modified Tsuri Komi Ashi Awesome video and analysis! Long live the Last Emperor!
amazing breakdown. Fedor is the master of weight distribution and chain-moves...never seen him in a bad position he didn't have an answer for. thanks again.
He was soooo good in his prime... And he was in his prime for a DECADE. Yes, judo, it's pretty evident in hip throws, foot sweeps etc... And combat sambo, COMBAT sambo, back then... A very serious deal. You got Tough. Even his recent fights, you can see the class of the man. He's no longer the insane pressure machine, as he can't be- the man is a senior citizen in context of proffesional sports. But, now, his distance management is perfect, his anticipation is spot on, he is now a counter striker. And he still packs a black out in his hands. Truly, one of all time greats.
Even when he misses the takedowns and trips, he is not in a bad position, and can often break with a strike. Plus he closes the distance using powerful looping overhead rights to #1 score damage if possible #2 clinch for grappling otherwise. He was so explosive. Only pure double leg takedowns by wrestlers seem to work on him, but then he subbed all who he did this to him.
Its really not , Fedor was well rounded. Basic instinct with techniques from all over. They forgot to mention his inside trip hybrid where he would throw you towards him by pushing his foot into your ahin. I thought that throw would be mentioned.
Fedor is a master of finding slack in the midst of chaos. I love him and everything he brings. I noticed when he winds up somewhere he is just plain intuitive he can make outside forces have no option but to go around. Focusing on weight distribution is just a tiny intro. The dude is an immovable object on command and an unstoppable force on command. Thanks fedor!
Fedor is what I consider the best example of succesful judo in MMA. He was often confident enough in his clinch that unlike other fighters who got rocked and would run away, he would dive forward, clinch and score a takedown while wobbled.
Great breakdown as always! Fedor has to be one of the greatest all around fighters of all time. One part of his game that is very underestimated was his submission game. I bet he has one of the best submission percentages of all time because it seems like anytime he went for one it was a done deal...especially his arm bars.
You better be the at the top of the elite class to even consider taking on Fedor. He has the perfect balance of grappling and striking that make every move the most effective decision. This guy is deadly and an absolute legend.
Here after hearing Firas Zahabi recommend to watch Fedor if you want tips on how to get Judo to work in MMA. I never realized that Fedor almost never shot for the legs, always took down fighters from the clinch. Amazing!
Great analysis of how Fedor executed his clinches! Fundamental judo techniques and concepts that Fedor would probably describe with Japanese nomenclature: Ko-uchi gari (minor outside reap), rather than outside trip; there are many different outside trips, reaps, sweeps, etc. O-uchi-gari (major inside reap), rather than inside trip; there are many different forms of inside trips, reaps, and sweeps. Most importantly, KUZUSHI (breaking balance). He had to have learned these as a child in Judo and Sambo, as they are beginner/fundamental techniques. Love your videos!
Sonny, te music choice for your videos is so nice and refreshing after all the heavy stuff, people mostly put in fighting videos :-) the content is even better
Thank you! The music I used in these earlier videos seemed to cause people to either love it or hate it :) But I much prefer it over the stock standard nu-metal that became the de facto soundtrack of choice for MMA videos. The songs I used here are all actually from Russian bands too so it makes sense for a video with Fedor :)
It is really hard to do all these combo. Even some of this judo technique are difficult to master and take so many hours of training. But he also is a master of striking. Incredible !
Thank you, Sir ! I had heard of Shifting before about stance switching but wasn't sure if it applied directly to this situation, but thanks for the info and I will read up on the Fitzsimmons shift"!
Im pretty sure this music is directly from an old-school porno cassette that i owned in my college years. Very appropriate (considering that anyone who fought Fedor Emelianenko in his prime got spanked). 😂🤣😆
Haha you are not the only person who says it sounds like porn music 😂 oh well I can't help what people hear but it was actually old school Soviet Jazz and Funk ua-cam.com/video/_9cX-i-l9IE/v-deo.html
Fantastic breakdown! I'm looking for ways to integrate some Greco-Roman upper-body wrestling with my old judo ashi waza- and this is a great start for my study!
His upper body off-balancing and throws were especially important given that knees to the head of a downed opponent were legal in Pride. If you shot a double leg and your opponent sprawled, you'd be vulnerable to a barrage of knees to the back of the head followed by soccer kicks - which is how Wanderlei Silva and Shogun Rua won many of their fights.
best analysis so far and ever! I have been watching him since 2003 and every breakdown ever, including experts in MMA, but yours is the most insightful in my opinion. good job!
Nice vid! Subbed. Did a vid on Khabib recently and had it in mind to do one on Fedor, but I think you've nailed it. Might do one a more narrowly focused one on Fedor's trips down the track, utilising the Judo terminology.
I did a seminar with fedor he says you dont even have to get your leg around and hook for the takedown...he said just load the weight on that leg and twist with with your body.

Best grappler ever! What people don’t realize is he was doing this against fighters that were 20 plus pounds heavier than him. Imagine if Fedor cuts to 205 which most 230 pound fighters in ufc do lol he would toss them around the cage like a doll
I wish Fedor was still in his Prime
As do we all my friend
I also miss PRIDE 😤
I wish It didn't take me so long to find Fedor or his brother 2 of the best fighter truly unreal
@@kirkbrindley6799 better late than never. Fedor is amazing
He is way better than khabob
The most interesting thing is how fast he switches between punch, clinch and throw. it's the main thing in philosophy of combat sambo.

He was often confident enough in his clinch that unlike other fighters who got rocked and would run away, he would dive forward, clinch and score a takedown while wobbled.

You are both geniuses this is a beautiful video thank you vm !
Many thanks for posting this. Fedor gets his 'Off-balancing' techniques from Judo, in which they are called Kuzushi. It is a central tenet of Judo.
Thank you! I had heard of that before I put the video together but didn't feel confident enough using Japanese words at the time :)

8:03 now what lessons can we learn from the Last Emperor?
Lesson number 1: NEVER MESS WITH FEDOR EMELIANENKO
he absolutely shoots takedowns off of his overhand. he mostly looks for clinch takedowns but he does shoot as well
Not often. Most of these I put under the "Scoop Slam" section.
Excelente analisis. FEDOR EL MEJOR DE TODOS LOS TIEMPOS
My favorite fighter of all time !
This man is something incredible! I would like to train with him
That would be amazing!
In old school Judo there was striking techniques Atemi waza. I feel that Fedor best represents what a complete judoka looks like
