    One point I’d like to add about his foot sweeps from the clinch, while it is certainly possible and in fact likely that he developed and “pressure tested” those techniques in Sumo Wrestling, these are also found in karate itself. In particular, the kata called Tekki Shodan or Naihanchi Shodan, depending on style, is very heavily based on clinch fighting using sweeps, leg kicks, elbows, knees, hook punches, arm locks, etc. That kata is currently my personal favorite and when you see the applications demonstrated by someone who knows what they’re doing, it makes a lot of sense.

      I know, it seems like there's always a great representative of Karate in top promotions: Stephen Thompson, GSP, Machida, Whittaker, Kikuno, Gunnar Nelson, Northcutt, Ramon Daniels and they still use the techniques too, not to mention it's a great base for timing, footwork and work ethic.

    Your video makes me think of Hayward Nishioka, the legendary judoka that was also a karate champion, with foot sweeps a large part of his arsenal. In one of his instructionals, he has a special section dedicated to karate footsweeps.

    I think you have to a attribute a lot of Machida's takedown game to his background as an amateur sumo champion. Which you do, to be fair. But I think it is understated a bit by many. Apparently Inoki was quite an influence on his wrestling game, as he said that was why he mostly outwrestled his opponent in his first MMA fight. He said that he then realized that he wanted to represent his karate background when he fought and began to employ that more so. Awesome, educational video. Great job.

    Throughout my school life I was bullied. They mocked me because of my dark skin. And they use to beat me up. No one helped me. I made friends with some of my classmates thinking that they will help me. But when the bullies came they left me and joined the bullies to beat me up with them.
    Then I started learning karate. And I worked day and night to train myself. And then all my bullies avoided any conflict with me.
    Now I'm a black belt in karate and I know how it feels to be weak. But the truth is we are not weak its just a state to mind. So I thought of teaching everyone martial arts and rise above bullies. And started a UA-cam channel last week. Always remember YOU ARE NOT WEAK. YOU ARE MORE THAN WHAT YOU THINK YOURSELF TO BE. NEVER EVER GIVE UP.

    It's funny, I have my 1st Dan Black Belt in traditional Okinawan Shōrin-ryū Shōrinkan karate which I started in 6th grade and did weekly until I was 18, and I knew it was technically from my karate background originally, but I always thought that the step in outside trip Lyoto does around 0:29 was just the simplest/easiest way to trip someone, but I guess I don't really see it that often.

  • @pmartialartsx
    @pmartialartsx 6 років тому +37

    Like everything else, there are pros and cons. I did Karate when I was already a black belt in both Hapkido and Taekwondo and made it up to brown belt. I still choose not to use the 50/50 stances they taught me because in sparring days, I usually toyed with their black belts because the 50/50 made it easier to sweep than having weight on rear leg. 50/50 made it very easy for me to sweep them because half of their weight was already on lead leg so all I had to do was kick ankle with 80% or more of my weight and they are trained to back up with both legs which was never fast enough for them to avoid the sweeps.
    The pros probably outweighed the con though because of all the Martial Arts, I have taken; Karate seemed to go the most in depth about the elements of actual hand to hand fighting. Others like Taekwondo focused more on techniques whereas on Karate, we focused a lot more on timing, efficiency of movements etc. pretty cool stuff actually.

    • @TheSilence1
      @TheSilence1 6 років тому +5

      It seems to me that putting 80% of your weight on either leg makes one vulnerable to wrestling take-downs, hence why a neutral stance is emphasized in classic judo. Perhaps karate had that in mind when emphasizing a neutral stance as well.

    • @pmartialartsx
      @pmartialartsx 6 років тому +3

      TheSilence1 80% or more on the kicking leg. As in, put body weight behind your kick.
      Funny, you should mention wrestling, Machida has the hardest time against wrestlers.
      They both have their time and place. I wouldn’t use it against a Muay Thai expert but may use it against a boxer since they wouldn’t be kicking my legs.

    • @navigatingel6104

      Karate is an awesome martial art. I'd put in on par with Ju Jitsu (not BJJ) because even though Ju Jitsu incorporates grappling and groundwork, it doesn't have the sparring of karate. My favourites are judo and kickboxing

      Sonny Brown- what’s more amazing is that the true Brazilian Jiu Jitsu GOAT was a man named Ivan Gomes. He was undefeated in Vale Tudo. He dominated Carlson Gracie under Gracie rules. Gomes challenged Inoki in the mid 70s. But Inoki wasn’t interested in putting his reputation on the line with an unknown. They became close friends and training partners. Some of those sumo/ catch techniques were taken back to Brazil by Gomes which influenced his Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

    There are alot of throws, takedowns and grappling in karate. Its all in the kata. If you understand the practical application (bunkai) then you will see these techniques! Unfortunately the art has been watered down over the years

      Yeah I think a lot of the so called blocks in karate kata are better understood as grappling techniques than as blocking punches and kicks as people often practice. Removing the arm of someone who is grabbing you much more practical with those motions which are far too robotic to actually stop a strike lol.

    Karate has actually been so misrepresented and watered down by Western culture and media that people actually think it's useless....it not only has striking and blocking techniques but sweeps and throws as well, it teaches the concept of distance in its sparring as well as quick yet heavy, yet controlled strikes so that you won't injure your opponent. Try throwing a punch or kick at full speed then end up tapping and not injuring your sparring partner. So many people can't, they lack control. The Kata is effective, if people would just try to understand the meaning and applications behind them. If you think Kata is just a performance and Kata players can't actually fight, well why don't you try actually fighting a Kata player then?
    I don't get the competition on which martial art is better/worse. We are supposed to see what we can learn from those arts not be a keyboard warrior who thinks a certain art isn't good just because he/she never tried it. Whatever works for you, works!

      I think kata is widely misunderstood. Lots of bunkai applications that are demonstrated are fantasy. Even old school karate guys get it wrong. I think if you compress the fighting distance, the bunkai becomes more credible and actually devastating. This requires many years of study though. Not everyone is dedicated enough to put that kind of time in.
