- We leave Cherbourg in France and head towards Ireland but get derailed by seasickness and changing weather. Turns out to be a blessing in disguise as we get to see some beautiful places along the south coast of the UK.

Well I think he is justified in his concern. People watching this channel did it precisely for the DYI aspect. I don't care about watching people sail around. Lots of channels do that. I may watch a few videos but honestly I will probably move on and find another DYI project channel to watch.
Your DIY videos now are better than they were 7 years ago. You will find what's right naturally over time

Nail on the head. Obviously the content is important though after an episode or two its the personalities and the characters that make us invest our time with them. I know nothing about IT or sailing and very little about DIY but i know what I do like, and that's, being along with Mads and Ava on their Journey.

Mads, I’ve been following your channel for years now. I joined for the journey. The engineer in me loved the DIY content, and the adventurer in me loves the sailing/travelogue/vlog content. All of your content is quality stuff; just as you learned to tell great DIY stories, you will certainly learn to tell great sailing stories. It’s in your heart. Never fear, I am not going anywhere. I suspect many others feel the same.
I always thought the channel was about you - and now it’s about you and Ava. Doesn’t matter whether you’re doing DIY, sailing, exploring or anything else😀 It will always be good…
I have been watching for the full 8 years and maz please don’t fret about the channel changing mode, if this weeks was anything to go by it’s still brilliant and Ava is still a super star. Thanks for sharing and thanks for being inspiring.
Don’t worry. You both have plenty of charm that works well on camera. You’ll be fine as a channel even without so much DIY. Plus, you are already pretty good at scenic videography, and you’ll only get better with time. Footage of lovely coastal passages never gets old.

Mads, my wife and I watch your channel because we like you. I am a sailboat owner and am constantly doing my own DIY to keep her from becoming a submarine. That’s not why we watch you. You’re an interesting person who tells a story in an unusual but pleasant way. Watching your videos relaxes me and increases my overall happiness. Ava has added even more to this as she is so much like you. I know it’s stressful as your content changes; but, as long as you keep being you we will keep watching - even if you start making detailed videos on basket weaving.
The DIY is coming to an end. How sobering, the first episode I saw you were discussing the engineering review and recommendations on fiberglassing the wood structural components that had become wet. I had to pause your video when you discussed your apprehension of your “theme” changing from dyi to the adventures of sailing. Relax, we have been on this long journey with you on getting Athena ready to sail to finally get underway with you both and what the real day to day sailing adventures are really like. Seasickness advice: less motor, more sailing. The wind in the sails helps keep the boat more stable than without.

I love to see you guys wearing your life vests when your sailing or motoring on the ocean. I wish some of the younger generation of sailors would do the same. I can only guess they have no idea how hard it is to turn a boat around in even calm seas and retrieve someone that's in the water. Without a life vest the chance of surviving in the water for very long is next to zero . Keep setting the great examples of safe smart sailiors.

I'm sure I'm one of many people here without extremely specific attachment to either DIY or sailing but find it all interesting because of the way you tell these stories. I'm sure the two of you are going to figure it out, and don't be afraid to trust your instincts - y'all are good at this!

The first truly offshore sailing I did was when I was 14. My parents had hooked me up with a yacht delivery from St. Michaels Maryland to Hamilton Harbor in Bermuda. I was fine with the Chesapeake Bay part of the voyage (I grew up sailing there) but, when we entered the Atlantic, I became intensely seasick for two days. Had to still cover my watches too. What I'm saying is, is that you need to power through this setback - give it three+ days at sea. Punch through, man.

I wouldn’t worry about the transition to a sailing channel, I’m sure whatever you and Ava do will be very interesting. Ava does a good job of telling us a little bit of the history of the places we wouldn’t normally see.
We just like hanging out w you Mads. I frankly was not sure how adding Ava would work but she fits right in. Just share life like you always have. Your outlook is what we like.

Mads, you have got this! You know how to shoot video, edit video, and tell a good story. You and Ava will do great!
Mads I am confident that you are going to have a wonderful sailing channel. So please try not to worry. As for seasickness that will get better. Just give it time. I still be seasick after 20 years of sailing but it has gotten a lot better. I find the steering the boat helps but it works better for me if you steer from the side of the boat and not right behind the wheel. This give you a more stable and less obstructed view forward. Also don’t give up so easy on the ginger. While it doesn’t help everyone it is helpful for most. I find ginger Candy works best for me. Also Ava is a 10, just terrific and she’ll be there for you. Never forget how lucky you are to be living your dream. Best wishes. Stay safe.
Mads, just be yourself , that's what we all tune in for . You and Ava are each others strongest allies and you guys will tell a great story together . To tell the truth the channel is better since Ava became a regular part of it , not that it was bad before but you are more confident with her by your side I think . Thanks for the great episode !
Mad’s, vey (very) powerful episode. And yes, you and your channel is in transition but that transition is what is most interesting. Casting off the lines and going, including the occasional seasickness, is part of you dream. A dream a lot of people have. Stop the DIY a bit, consider what you want to see/ do and make miles. It helps your seasickness, your confidence level and your channel. Of that I’m pretty sure and I will continue to follow you both. This is it, live that dream and don’t let UA-cam fear get in between. Enjoy life, you’ve worked hard enough to get to this point. (Recommendation: watch your initial dream video and see where you are now, the third and final step man, just go! )

Mads, re: producing SAILING content. The way you began this episode at dawn, with your navigational lights, and red lights in the cockpit was perfect. Combine your capabilities to explain navigational decisions, shots of sail changes, views of sea state, entering harbors, etc., with Ava's joy of exploring various places on land, and your channel views will grow far beyond your expectations. * Loved this video today *
So far the transition to sailing works for me! Dont be scared of showing the boat battling the elements and all the technical things like furling and trimming the sails and how all the previous diy are handling the passage, wether they work as intended or not! Should be interesting!
Hi Mads! I've been watching for years and I'll continue to watch as you figure out this transition. I might be a minority, but I would appreciate long format videos when you do your big ocean crossings. They're peaceful in a sort of ASMR way. Also the natural geographic interlude was funny 🤣.
Great video, excited for the next phase and so cool to see Ava is such a natural sailor. Also great to see Mads out of his comfort zone for maybe the first time - how character is built! And whatever content you produce, we'll be happy to watch. If we just wanted DIY instructions we'd read a manual - its your characters and story we appreciate.

I think every sailor gets seasick at some point of their sailing life. I'm usually fine on passages and as you've mentioned refocusing your attention to hand steering really helps. But the most absurd thing is that I get seasick very frequently at mooring ball/anchorage. So don't worry, happens to all of us :)

Mads, you and Eva should have NO worries transitioning. In fact, your presentation styles are both perfect for whatever content you include. For me, I have watched for years because of your style: no matter the content. As a sailor, I can sincerely say that any sailing is a bit like DIY. Your journeys and the planning for each lends itself to a different flavor of DIY, and the ole doing boat work in exotic places with Mads and Eva will never get worn out. I found that anxiety (including feelings of responsibility) was certainly a factor in my seasickness. When you're having fun you don't seem to get sick. Good luck.
I find sea sickness is much like VR sickness, as it gets better with time, but that doesn’t help much in the short run. Some claim that putting a good earplug in one ear helps them. I have not tried this, but it is worth a try and is cheap to test. They claim it helps the brain to shut down confusing signals that cause seasickness.
I've only ever been seasick three times (now) so I don't think I'm super prone to it but it's certainly not a super fun good time so I'll give the ear plug a try :)
@@SailLife The idea with the earplug is that you place it the ear opposite to which you use for writing so if your write with your right hand, the plug goes in the left ear.
Mads .. I've been following you for a long while .. and I can assure you that the change of content to mostly sailing and less DIY will not make a difference to most of us. I think it's accurate to say we initially followed for the DIY .. but stayed for both your and Ava's personalities. Let the sailing begin 👍

I have no doubt that this is going to be a fantastic sailing channel with occasional DIY projects from air conditioning to a broken hose clamp. You have nothing to worry about because you are starting off with way more experience than most and you are quite a humerous (odd like me) person.
I'm a big fan of this channel, been following for a while. You have, via your in-depth videos, taught me many 'how-to' lessons of excellent technical content. I'm looking forward to the future of this channel where you continue this educational content and transition from diy to how-to-sail (think of telling us about your: choices, reasonings, strategies, techniques, opinions, pros/cons) - I would value that.
Don't worry Mads, we would be happy to watch you sail your toy duck in the bathtub, much less the many adventures you and Ava will have. Those were very nice things you had to say about Ava being a real trooper when you were seasick. I'm so happy you two found each other. My wife and I have been together 45 years. May you and Ava break our record.
Just you guys showing us where your at, and the little gems such as Agatha Christie's boat house, someplace I would never in my life end up is wonderful! You are living a life some of us would love to live but can't for whatever reasons, just be you and enjoy!
A tip I learned after many days fishing from a small boat was to not look down. In other words, keep your head upright. Fresh air also helps.

Mads, the best thing about your channel is your style of storytelling and instruction. Please don’t change that, it’s what endears you to us all. Most of the other channels imitate each other and it can be tiring. You have a unique style that is genuine, accessible and embraceable.

I am both an avid sailor and also long afflicted with the diy boat repair bug. So I have enjoyed immensely being along for the ride for the amazing job you have done on Athena. Now I am just as much looking forward to watching you and Ava on your travels. I know you’ll do really with the new focus on production. Ava has great instincts for travel narrative already and you seem to share a sense of humour. Looking forward to another fun ride.
I often get sea sick and when I started I got sea sick everytime. It will get better and the more you sail will only help. A couple of things that really help me are hand steering and not eating before sailing. If I’m really hungry and haven’t eaten anything for a day before leaving I won’t throw up.
imma fan of cinnamon red hot candies (~1cm each) or even plain fresh ginger sliced and made into tea

First of all, it's going to be interesting seeing how this tech-heavy boat holds up. I don't think you'll have any problem generating interesting content. Even if traveling and living aboard turns out to be not as much fun as you thought it was going to be (which was the case for me) it will be entertaining to see you document the reasons why that is, and see if you come up with solutions. At least half the problems you'll have are social and cultural, so it's good that you have each other. Good luck, we'll be here watching no matter what.

Hi Mads, I have a high level of confidence that you will smoothly transition to a sailing channel. Both you and Eva are great story tellers. Your long time viewers are happy to be along for the ride. And we don't even have to worry about sea sickness.
For most ppl seasickness lasts around 3 days...just have to power thru it then you're OK.
I'll just think of it as a 3 day diet ;)

@@SailLife Also, some good hard work seemed to help me Mads. I was sailing with my uncle when I was 18, on a very rough Chesapeake Bay and was just miserable. It was hot and humid as hell and all I could do was lay down in the cabin. Eventually, my uncle put his foot down and told me to get up and get to work! He had me scrubbing decks, coiling lines, lubing shackles, you name it. After an hour I felt fine and continued to feel fine for the next 24 hours even though the rollers kept getting bigger. Food for thought (sorry to bring up food, haha).

Anyone who has taken the Liverpool to Dublin ferry will attest to the water state. It's a long crossing with invariable large seas. Not many escape a good quese!

I've been enjoying your content since Obelix. Honestly what keeps me coming back - aside from the progress on all your projects - is just your good humor and the methodical way you approach things, even when things get super frustrating. With Ava adding her perspective I don't think you will lack for content. Things have switched from you making 90% of the content decisions (projects) to the content basically coming to you, in the form of unknown/unplanned voyage experiences.
Seasickness is an inner ear/balance issue. Try an earplug in one ear. This helps balance air pressure. It sounds weird, but it works.

Haven't heard or tried this one yet. For me the seasickness went away when i started eating (again). I started with an apple, that worked for me. After that i noticed that when i have a full stomach, i felt less seasickness. And one other maybe somewhat positive, for me seasickness (untill now) always had an end, and after that i didn't feel sick anymore, the longest (for me) was 24 hrs before it stopped.
Mith busters did an episode on ginger being a good old-time remedie to sea sickness. Have you ever tried? I wish you well.
everyone loves the DIY, but it is your personality and sense of humor that people keep watching for. We felt the same about our small channel and it remaining entertaining when switching to full time sailing, which was hard to deal with. You guys are great, we loved the "David Attenborogh" part with Eva shopping. 😂👍🏻
I'm of the opinion that any videos you put out going forward will be a celebration of your success. There are a lot of depressing stories out there these days and yours is always a ray of sunshine.

I'm not a hater. I like this channel.
Yep your weather window was not so good, Strong westerlies at the moment but that will be changing. Would give it a day for the swell to subside before venturing into the Irish sea though as it will be confused and lumpy. As someone else said hand steering and focus on sailing the boat helps greatly. You will also learn a lot more. You both need to be able to do this for hours at a time. If you are in tune with the boat your brain anticipates the movement. Sitting around being a passenger is not great as all you think about is your discomfort and how long you need to endure.
Sail trim, navigation and helming is what you need, that and ginger biscuits and an Apple now and then. Chocolate bars to lift the mood and tea. Also try to match the sails with the wind. Not too much but not too little either. A bit more sailing Zen. Good luck crossing.
