I can't imagine how proud you must be sailing the boat you spent so much time dreaming about and working on. I've been here for the entire journey and couldn't be happier for the two of you! Cheers from dry, hot, Phoenix, Arizona!
Wow, thank you for sticking around. It's definitely been rewarding and exciting finally getting to sail her and get to know her in a completely different way 👍
It doesn't matter what the content is, when Sunday rolls around I'm always excited to see another Sail Life video -- and have been for what feels like at least 7 years??
100 percent agreed
Mads, no worries on your shift to a sailing travel-blog from a DIY centric blog. Well done as always!! Safe travels!
I can’t get over how beautiful Athena is under sail. The attention to every detail has really paid off. I only hope she sails as good as she looks. ⛵️👍🏻
Too many people are too scared to go sailing so are doomed to permanently DIY at the dock. So good to see you finally sailing in the most super hi tech boat.
Love your channel been flowing you for years now. My girlfriend and I look forward to Sunday night just to throw my tablet to the 50 inch TV and catch up with you folks. Take care and love you both...seeeeee yaaaaaaaa xx
That's awesome! You guys take are too!
Makes us so happy that you are getting to see more than just Gosport! Your drone footage is looking so much better too. Good work, guys 😁
1. Athena looks amazing with the sails up.
2. It's interesting learning along with you as you learn to sail.
3. Mads slowly transitioning into a cruiser, with new hat, is great!
Great combo of DIY, touring the localities, and cruising life. Love it!
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it!
I've been following Sail Life from the time you began replacing your deck core and have enjoyed the DIY journey very much. I was so pleased for you, and Ava, as you discovered your future together. Now as the "Sail Life couple" , I'm thrilled to be a "fly-on-the-wall" as you continue and send you my best wishes as the journey continues...
Awesome video. We laughed out loud with you both. So authentic and fun to watch. Athena looks sooooo good. Strangely we feel so proud lol. We did it….wait you did it! 😀 we were just cheering you along!
you've got to stop at the Scillies... they are beautiful. I think your success with the Copper Coat lies in the meticulous preparation & application you did. Most seem to favour the yellow prop guard. I really liked the content mix just about right.
One of your best videos yet, even without the DIY content!!!
Wow, thank you so much :)
I'm glad to see the Cooppercoat is working out for you guys I never doubted it would it's all in the application and like everything else you do you did it right by the book. With an understanding of the way the product works. Exposed copper is the idea and your attention to detail wins every time. Stay safe I ended the video very much.
Hey, guys. Been watching and taking notes for quite some time now (thank you, Mads!). Last episode you mentioned the challenge of switching from a DIY format to a sailing format. My boat is in the middle of an extended overhaul, so I watch a few different UA-cam channels and I have some things I look for, and while I’m certainly NOT everybody, I thought you might welcome one guy’s opinion…
1. Be you. You guys seem like genuinely good people, keep being awesome.
2. In this video you did some non-speaking scenes… water on the hull, hands on the wheel; that type of thing. I like that, it helps me “feel” it…
3. You also took you video walking around town. Yes, please! I will probably never get to go there; make me jealous 😁.
4. Sailing footage is always good, of course.
Thanks for doing what do. I’m going to back to lurking in the shadows now, but I’m looking forward to seeing how the channel grows!
Wow Mads, seeing Athena under sail and she looks absolutely awesome! Great video, particularly the sailing and anchoring parts, because they showcase all the hard work and effort you have put into the refit over the past several years! I also enjoyed your exploring of the Cornish coastline, my fav area of my native homeland ☺️
Athena really looks sharp !
Thank you so much!
Athena looks very lovely. A credit to the hard work by many. The country side is rather spectacular
Really great show this week you two. You are making the transition seamlessly.
After so many years good to see you on the water
Good job on the DIY/sailing combo. I know you were nervous about it but you acted it
aced?
Thank you so much :)
Love both DIY and sailing. Thanks for all the years of content.
So if you're diving anyway check your anchor. It helps to visualize how it sets. Also a suggestion. You have more systems on board than most boaters. Maybe feature a system every now and then...how it's working, how useful you find it, the best way you've found to access the system (cell phone app vs direct access, etc.)
Hey y’all, i’ve been watching since you first got Athena. I loved the DIY aspect of the channel and your sheer determination. I am a fixer and tinkerer of things, sometimes, and seeing how you dealt with and approached problems really helped me change the way i deal with and approach problems.
Now, after all this time (and sanding and epoxy and fiberglass), Athena looks better than new, and it’s time to sail. We all knew it would happen at some point.
Just wanted it to be known that, at least for me, your apprehension and trepidation about slightly changing the content that you create is understandable, HOWEVER, i am absolutely here for it. I came for the DIY, but i’m staying for your adventures, and to be honest it was always about the adventure, now it’s just in a different more immersive way.
I’m so excited to see where you’ll go and the things y’all will do. I live in a landlocked state in the U.S., so sailing is really only a daydream for me, but i LOVE that you explain sailing best-practices and how-tos for people like me who don’t really know.
anyway, just wanted y’all to know i’m even more of a fan now than i used to be, thanks in part to the content but mostly to the creators.
sorry for the long comment.
I do think the care taken with following the copper coat application guidelines gives the results which is proven on your hull. Great video guys.
Great video as always, been watching your channel for years now living my sail life by proxy. As i live in the middle of the USA about as far from the ocean as can be in my country, so your videos are a joy to watch and a highlight of my Sundays. I'm always impressed my your candor and enthusiasm for things. Keep living your sail life dreams and long may Athena sail the waves.
Another great SAILING video!! Keep up the great work Mads and Ava!!
"I love you!" "I Mawmewtew!" lol
It is a beautiful coastline down their. There are really quaint harbours and a lot of history. Have spent many summers growing up down there and many more as an adult. It's the place I feel most at home.
Awesome video, Ty for showing more of your time on land and the Beautiful scenery!
Fantastic guys!
Nice drone shots - kudos
Thanks! 👍
So happy you are having fun and learning lots whilst travelling! Thanks for the video.
Great video - nice transition from DIY to sailing, enjoying the videos.
I think you are morphing into full time sailing channel are looking great! Looking forward to another 3 years
Another great video Ava and Mads .
So happy to see you guys hitting the seas. Stay safe, and hope you have a blast.👍👍💛⛵
Great video, as usual. Glad to see bloopers back! Keep it coming. 😀
Another great episode guys. Loved the drone footage of Athena under sail, looks excellent 👌👌
GREAT! Episode guys. Love the historical book report awesome. Well done, really enjoyed the DIY, good mixture, keep the bloopers.
It is great to see all the systems coming together and working as they should.
Sunday morning coffee and Sail Life )
Oh glorious sailing!
I’ve been following for a long time and in my opinion this has been the most beautiful video yet. Glad to be a subscriber and again the drone shots made this video amazing. Live your dream bro!
Hiya to you both,
Great video, a very good mix, thank you.
Fair winds and a following sea, Steve...
Great video. Enjoyed the mix up of content. Especially some of the behind the seen bloopers.
don't wory mad's i loved your diy and i like your adventures now, seeing all you built in action. as long as you keep the same way of going into good detail i'm happy and glad for you.
Enjoyed the sailing and DIY mix!
Hi you two! I was going to tease Ava about the adenoids but Mads beat me to it. We all do it. Thanks for sharing.
No she has it right. Annoyds is the proper way to say it. As in "they are meant to annoy you when they need to be changed."
Well done on your sailing "transition" videos guys. Really enjoying them.
We love the epic music and drone footage from when the wind pIcked up enough to sail. Wow.
Good content and pleasant moderation makes for enjoyable viewing. Thank you
Nice video I enjoy so much!, like always , Thank you!!!
Epic drone shot and awesome tunes at 9min in Mads!
Great job with the video! It looks like you're well on your way transitioning from DIY to sailing. The cinematic shots are a great addition.
Been a while since I've had a chance to check in on your channel. Athena is looking fantastic! Best of luck on your travels!
Great video, as usual.
Your narration style puts a smile on my face! What a beautiful video! Can't wait for the Atlantic Crossing!!
Love this video Mads. I envy Ava and her book selection, also the time she has on passage to read them! Looking forward to your next stop. Thanks for filming and making these videos. Cheers from sunny San Diego!
That’s a beautiful boat. Looks like new. Fine restoration Sir! Safe sailing.
I liked the combination of travelogue, DIY and sailing.. Looking forward to following your excursions this summer.
Great music for the stroll in Quay too!
Glad to see your both getting your sea leg’s and experience that will be needed to make your journey across the Atlantic, nothing wrong with being cautious as the oceans can be unforgiving to the foolhardy, love your channel cheers from Perth Australia
Another great episode.
The real sticker shock will occur when you arrive in the US! I paid more in one month to keep Corsair in a 50' slip than you paid for a year of dockage in Denmark.
There ARE free general anchorages on US charts, as opposed to "special anchorages" which are always locally run for money. There are also a number of well documented town docks that offer limited free anchorage.
Both require lots of reading to find!
Athena in some of these shots while docked looks just amazing. You've done such a good job. You should be really proud of the work you've done.
Good balance for DIY and sailing.
Great video!
Beautiful boat ❤
Nice hat and the fit out to sailing transition is going well. Cheers Steve
Athena is a gorgeous boat, and even moreso when underway! Loving the shift to more cruising content - you're doing great at adapting your style. 10/10 would recommend.
Dinosaur squeezings..... love it Mats!!
Great Vid. Loved the Daphne Du Maurier story. England is such a jewel of a country
Hello guys. I'm a new viewer and now subscriber. I must say this is the best sailing channel on UA-cam. I love that you go over everything very thoroughly and you both are very appreciative to those who help you along the way. Thanks for making me your number one fan now. Be safe out there guys.
I loved this video. I really liked seeing how Copper Coat held up, the sailing & drone shots, as well as Fowey. This week was a really nice mix...you are transitioning from a DIY channel into a sailing channel nicely Mads & Ava 👍
i have been on this journey with you for quite a few years arm chair wise. to see her full sail with the both of you. absolutely fantastic. well done guys. just proves hard work plus determination. is what removes you from ordinary into the exceptional
Very enjoyable thanks 👍 never realized sailing on our south coast was so expensive but keep up the filming 👍😊
Beautiful cinematography and music 😉
Very pleased to see the copper coat performing as it should.
I don't think though that it is luck!
I remember the persistence to detail that you had when applying it...
Great job!!! 👏👏👏
Great video. She looks beautiful with the sails up.
You are on the right track with your sailing vlog, I encourage you to keep on filming your new adventure. Cheers
Great video. Sailing and DIY combos are working well :)
I like how in your intro you say, "somewhat extensive refit." I remember you encased most of the structural members with fiberglass.... sounds fairly extensive!
Dear Eva and Mads, we really enjoy your videos. They are very inspiring and helped us a lot on finding decisions for our boat project. Thanks so much for your efforts and the great videos. Hans and Heike
This is incredibly kind :) Thank you so much and thank you for watching. We are so glad the videos have helped :)
I love your boat!
I’ve enjoyed watching the refit and she’s gorgeous now. Awesome job guys😊
Thank you so much :)
Another great video Mads and Ava. I hope you enjoy the scillies and sail safe in the unpredictable waters around land's End
Thanks so much!
hi Mads! If you are shocked by the mooring rates in the south of England, you will have a heart attack if you sail the west coast of the USA. In Seattle, I pay per month what you pay for a full year in Denmark for a slip. I have a 28 footer.😳 Southern California is almost twice that rate if you can find any space...
Coming from California, we were surprised how affordable the south of England seemed! The bounty of free anchorages helps. The only affordable boat storage in most of California is on a trailer-and that wouldn't quite work for a boat like Athena. The place I live has a 15+ year waiting list for a slip in the marina. And just using the launch ramp costs almost as much as two nights at some harbors in England!
Same in north east.
Mexico is ridiculous too! Good thing Mads and Ava have a good anchor!!!
Probably avoid Auckland nz to monthly rental for a 40 ft berth here is equivalent to around 700 to 1000 usd or if you want just afew weeks the starting rate is around 400 per week.
Indeed! Our slip for a 45' boat costs about $6000.00 per season in Rhode Island.
4:52 It sounds silly but it's good advice. Me and bunch of guys hired a houseboat a few years ago. We anchored in a nice area full of yachts and expensive boats so we could go to the pub.
Just before we got off the boat we realized it was moving slightly towards million dollar yachts. We managed to start the engines and get out of the way. But if we had not realized then it would have been an expensive mistake.
In summary anchors sometimes slip.
Hi Mads and Ava. I’ve been following your channel now for a couple of years but this is the first time leaving a comment. Anyway, I just wanted to say how much I have enjoyed your weekly videos. I am now going back and watching them from the beginning. You have done an amazing job with Athena. Thanks for sharing your adventure with us. See you…..
Glad you got to meet the guys at Mylor Riggers.
They’re superb at what they do, party animals to the core and wickedly good racing sailors. Top blokes.
Cheers! 😎👍🍻
Love the blooper!
The leather wraps look so good on the boat. Hope you are both enjoying your adventures.
I like the way Ava pronounces anode as "anoid." It comes closer to the word "annoyed" which is what I would be if I had to change them very often while in the water. Thank you for the enjoyable video Mads and Ava.
Hi Mads and Ava , Mads have you taken a moment and stepped back and looked at all the things you have done on the boat ? Man I tell you the work , blood sweat and tears have created a lovely boat that you can feel proud of. Best regards from
Sweden
The south coast is expensive if you use marinas and mooring balls. As you get more confidence in anchoring, the costs will drop significantly.
We recently stayed in Falmouth, where an anchorage spot costs £10 a night and for that you get use of shower and laundry facilities as well as use of the secure dinghy dock.
We took a mooring ball for a night and that cost us £32.
Staying at anchor in the Helford River was free. We also stayed a night at Fowey; couldn't afford two!
As always, great videos, and I'm loving the transition to a sail channel (Actually, I always thought you were a sail channel and that boat repairs and maintenance is always a part of sailing!)
Good call on the Duburry's.
Great Video. My Mum's family lived in Fowey when I was a kid. Will be there next week visiting Aunt and Uncle in Tywardreath. Spent lots of holidays in Mylor and have sailed there a lot (most recently on our Sprint 15 cat). With time St Just-in-Roseland, St Mawes and the Helford are beautiful places to visit.
Lovely to see places we know with different eyes as well as places we haven't been yet.
You're doing a great job at transitioning from DYI channel to sailing channel 👍
Love the music! Love the hat!
Fantastic episode! Checking your anodes keeps you from getting annoyed. 😂😎💕💕💕
Marvellous!
