  • For generations traveler celebrations have been a family affair. Though the traditional way of life has declined in recent years, the large tight-knit family unit still lies at the heart of the traveler community.
In this episode we meet the Mcfadyens, a large Irish traveler family in the midst of a series of celebrations. The family is excited about the release of their father Chris from prison, who they plan to pick up in a stretch limousine.
We catch up with Josie Mcfadyen and her husband Swanley who first appeared in the last series, when Josie waded down the aisle in her enormous front-split wedding dress.
Recently convicted Josie is planning the Christening of her 6 month old daughter, but still finds the time to decorate her electronic tag with bling.

Throws a dog in the river, dangles the baby upside down by her feet, has a tattoo of Cheyenne's name, and does an unlicensed boxing match against someone twice his age? AND says he can grow and mold Cheyenne into the girl he wants and she'll be perfect by 20? This boy is a walking red flag

Soooo… apparently, the dad, Chris McFadyen, went to prison for taking a woman prisoner in a car and beating her up, because of a family feud of some sort - which explains the ankle tag his daughter had to wear. A press article states that he “lunged at Miss Casey through the open window of her sister’s Mini Cooper. McFadyen and four others, including his wife, surrounded the vehicle before the father of nine punched his victim in the face, leaving her with a bruised face and chipped teeth.”
The mother, Josie Doherty, 2 of the daughters (Josie and Barbara McFadyen) and one of the sons (Isaac McFadyen) and a cousin of theirs (Charlie Collins) were back in the dock in 2019 for allegedly “attacking a partially blind pregnant woman and her eight-month pregnant sister in a mass brawl at a nail bar. According to the hearing at Kingston Crown Court, some of the attackers stamped on Margaret's head and stomach while one allegedly shouted: "Go on kick the baby out of her".”
Later in 2019, sons Isaac and John McFadyen (Cheyenne’s teen-grabbing, dog-throwing, women-molding husband) were jailed with their gang of 12 thugs for various offenses, including were sentenced for offences including “conspiracy to rob, conspiracy to burgle, conspiracy to steal, criminal damage and handling stolen goods. The gang first came to the police’s attention on 31 December 2017 when they carried out a ram raid on the high-end outdoor clothing company Altimus in Kensington High Street using a stolen Range Rover and several mopeds.” “"They terrified their victims during a number of calculated and violent ordeals”.
In particular, John and Isaac McFadyen, became infamously known for “trying to snatch a toddler from his mum with 2 other gang members during an attempted robbery caught by CCTV cameras in 2018. John grabbed her arm hard enough to leave bruises and told her: “Give me your rings. I’m going to hurt your child and take him away.” Footage shows the “terrified” woman dragging her child into the road before builders chased the gang away, brandishing scaffolding poles.”The crime was shared widely on social media.
Well well well, how charming and endearing. Truly aspirational.

These are babies having babies and marrying. The whole grabbing tradition or whatever. Has always been creepy and gross. It is borderline s**ual harassment if not there already. The other girl father is going to prison. This is not something that just happened. He didn't fall and trip. No it wasn't a horrible crime. He is a grown man with a ton of kids who made a choice. Domestic violence, washing a caravan every day, cheating husband, loads of kids, over weight, eldest child looking after all their youngest children as they are "teaching them how to be stay at home breeders and caravan cleaners/ home cleaners", the male children fighting each other, swearing and being taught that women are their property that they can do what they want with etc etc
The "closeness" comes from young girls being bored beyond tears cleaning and cooking from 11 yrs onwards so they look towards the future - a big wedding and then leaving their parents to have loads of kids of their own and repeat the same life they couldn't wait to leave.
The girls are told that you can never leave your husband no matter how bad and what he does to them or anyone else as they will be alone forever and being that they have barely any education and have never worked nor had to provide for their family in their life so they are scared to lose their husband so they stay - the men know this so they cheat and beat them cos they know they can get away with it. Travellers have an incredibly high domestic violence rate.
I do think things are slowly changing but it needs to end, this is no way of life for any woman!

It’s so crazy how they normalize marrying at such a young age. What’s crazier yet is that most states here in the US allow people to marry at 16 with parental consent and there is a handful of states that can marry younger!!! And some can marry if they’re pregnant or have 3 children

You have to remember how many modern medical marvels we have. Penicillin, x-ray, disinfectant, food preservation, cheap food, clean water, better housing and clothing. In the Holy Roman empire the average age of mortality was 33 and Julius Caesar was 45 when he was assassinated. Then there is all the primary industries that are dangerous. We don't know how good we have it. Those social norms apply to back then

You can get married in Spain at 14. These law apply to times when life expectancy was low and as soon as you could stand you worked. Childhood toys were based on real world industry (farming, construction, military, house keeping, school, shop, child minding). Now all children's toys are electronic and do not resemble the real world.

The Family closeness of those family is often seen in a romanticized way. As long as you play along by the rules set by the clans, everything is fine, but the moment you deviate...not so much. And the fact how they treat animals or even their own women...let's not even begin. Everything that does not have two legs and a penis is pray or property.
This clan mentality and no regard for rules that the rest of society follows, leads to mafia like situations which often end in crime and aggression and violence against anything that is deemed out of order or against "the family".
How so many in those documentaries can sit there with a straight face talking about manners and honor, while beating each other up, "snatching" underage girls to marry them and dress like half naked table dancers when going into a church is beyond me.
Just imagine being a girl not wanting to marry someone out of the community, or not marrying under the age of 25. Imagine being gay in this "family" structures. Imagine feeling like getting a stable job...or as women: wanting to study.
You would either be silenced and beat into submission or loose your whole family and you would need to live far away in order to not get pestered.
This kind of clan mentality is not romantic in any form. It's brainwashing, dehumanizing, s3xualisation and grooming of minors, misogynistic , and toxic. The inner rules they have to follow are stricter than anything the society they despise so much, demands from their citizens. How brainwashed into submission mus a women be to think that is what it takes to have a happy family?

    • @wolfc8755

These girls are hyper-sexualized almost from the day they are born. Their entire designated purpose in this community is to attract a guy, get married, and have babies in order to keep the community going. And the sooner a girl gets married and starts having babies, the better. They are expected to marry young and they are expected to get pregnant IMMEDIATELY afterwards. If it takes even a few weeks to get pregnant, all the other Travelers start thinking there's something wrong with the girl (and ONLY the girl, never the guy)!
The girls also have an ironclad rule to remain a virgin until after they are married (males don't have this requirement) in spite of the hyper-sexualizing and objectifying that starts when they are still just toddlers (not to mention the horrific "grabbing" custom which is nothing less than the sanctioned sexual assault of teenage girls). Any girl who doesn't remain a virgin will be cast out of their family AND the Traveler community which is a horrendous and terrifying prospect because the ONLY people they know are their family and some other members of the Traveler community, and they don't have much of anything in the way of schooling, job skills, or how to function in the world outside of their family and community.
Girls/women who divorce are also cast out of their family and the community (and again, this does not apply to the males), so the fear of being cast out and left all alone in the world with children to care for (children go with the divorced mother), is often the glue that keeps these women in their marriages in spite of neglect, abuse, violence, drunkedness and/or husbands who are in and out of prison (divorced males are free to pursue other girls and remarry, and husbands being drunk, violent, in prison, etc is normalized as being both the price and pride of being a Traveler).
Raising girls with the constant onus of being responsible for protecting the family's name and honor by remaining a virgin while also being hyper-sexualized in order to attract a guy and marry very young, followed by immediately being thrust into the world of caring for babies and children and husbands and homes while a teenager ( there is no such thing as living alone as a single person for a time), keeps them from ever having the maturity to wonder about a different kind of life as they are growing up, or having the time to wonder once they are firmly entrenched in all the duties of caring for a family.
It's a very typical patriarchal society where females are objects owned first by their father and then by their husbands (their fecundity is under the control of a male at all times), and the females have very specific duties and rules for which they will pay dearly if they fail to abide by them while the males can do pretty much whatever they want (IF a male does do something that really riles their community, they usually just have to fight another male member with a stake in the trespass, after which the problem is considered done and dusted).
