  • For Irish Traveller girls, there are three big milestones in their lives: Their Holy Communion, their Hen/Bachelorette Night - and their Wedding.
Most freedoms such as leaving moving out, or even the house unaccompanied are only afforded to married women. So it’s no surprise that in traveller communities, young girls dream of marrying young - and fast.
In this video we follow Josie and Swanley as they plan their wedding and prepare for married life together. They have only been dating for four months.

The whole thing, the dresses, the cake, the laughing during the vows, it’s like a children’s party.
Then the dancing like strippers, the tears as the wedding ends.

It's exactly like a children's party. The laughing during the vows was ridiculous. I don't think they should have been married if they couldn't stop laughing. That's the serious part. He was finslly able to come to the US from Canada and we were married and it was the best day of my life. Lots of smiles and giggles as my little nephew yawned loudly during our ceremony, but the vows were taken seriously. It was amazing. And we will be together forever. But his mother was one of my closest friends, so I knew her son was just a huge boy, like his bio father.
By the time he reached 21, and a fully legal adult, he was even bigger, and I don't mean fat.
That young man, whom I haven't seen in several years (I've moved 800 miles away), is one of the kindest, sweetest men on Earth, and highly protective of his four sisters, his mother, and his wife, but he's no pansy, and he'd rip a person limb from limb for making fun of him, or saying anything negative about them. I kind of get the feeling this young man in the video is somewhat the same way----and YOU need to learn not to be so judgmental!

The thing we all need to consider is how much our environment, culture, supportive resources, financial circumstances, and health play into our ability to make good decisions. So many times, we judge from afar based on our own privilege and circumstances without considering that the person we're judging or counseling doesn't have the same options or supportive surroundings readily available for them. Most of us are doing the best we can with what we have to work with, and humans as a group need to keep that in mind and just be kind.

I'm Irish-American and I didn't want to go to Greece unmarried, so we went there for our honeymoon. We're together now it's three years married, gone through many hardships, but we both feel an obligation to God first and each other. I can tell you from personal experience they tend to get the worst of the worst of any community for their shows.
just like with their little pageant shows the individuals that agreed to the show were already considered a laughing stock of the community due to their extreme behavior before they went on the show. everyone else including my family refused. My parents received a few phone calls when I was younger TV stations wanting us to be on the pageant show everyone we talked to within the community turned it down. The person that wound up accepting was the living definition of crazy pageant mom.

Y'know, the gypsy girls talk about how they aren't "allowed" to dress "slutty," because in one episode, one of the girls wanted to do glamour modeling (lingerie/swimsuit modeling), but she refused to wear almost everything the Page 3 stylist picked out for her, yet they already dress half naked for all these parties! It just seems weird to me that one thing is ok to wear, but something similar is not ok to wear just because it's typically meant to be worn in the bedroom only.

Such a young age for both kids getting married. Instead of experiencing all the joys , learning experience’s, traveling( I’m sure they’ve done that a lot already), and growing up in general they immediately rushed into marriage. It’s their tradition but I truly wish both of them could have grown more before becoming married so soon. Best of luck to them. I wish there would be a show every season ( 5,10 yrs later)revisiting these couples and seeing where they are now.
