I feel like I've made progress the past few months in getting out of side control. But for the past week or so we've been working on side control drills in class and I can't get out at all. And I'm terrible on the top. It is so frustrating!
No one actually does all this shit during a free roll. It's too complicated to maintain certain positions for long unless the person just sucks or weaker than you

Keep training. The more mat time you get, the better you'll get. Everyone has their slumps in training, just train through it. Good luck.
