Worm 🐛 castings are magical and mandatory for my 3 monsters pushing out a new leaf every two weeks through growing season. Seriously, they love 💕 them!
@@sandylockhart3172 I apply mine once a month during the growing season and one final time at the end of the season for winter fertilization. I use around a quarter cup (2 ounces) for a 6 in pot. Just apply evenly around the top and work into the soil as best you can while being careful of young roots and stems
Thanks, I just got my first Monstera and put it in a corner with a large west-facing window. I use worm castings for most of my plants and will start using them as you directed. It is taking to it's new space and actively growing new leaves.
I finally got my MD last year. Put it in a big plastic pot, which I put outside on the east side of my house. I happened to have a tall wrought iron trellis which I stuck into the pot. I watered it regularly and fertilized it also, and that plant started giving me large leaves with so many finest rations. Once cold weather started coming, there was no way I was going to be able to move that pot anywhere. So I decided to take as many cuttings as possible and put one to two leaves in large clear vases to root indoors. Even though the indoor lighting wasn’t very bright, I’m happy to relate that most developed more roots and are getting ready to be potted up. As for the mother plant, it remained outside protected with a layer of leaves and covered up with some tent material. When I finally uncovered it, what leaves it still had had frozen and turned brown, but the trunk is very much green. Fingers crossed that it will start sprouting out again.🤞🤞🤞🤞
@@vickykent353 Yes, it did! However, it gave me only one sprout which came out from the ground. So once again when cold weather came around, I repeated the same thing. I think, next time, I’m going to leave more nodes (but cutting off the leaves in order to leave a longer stalk in the pot) in order to see if it’ll give me more sprouts for a fuller plant.
Love, love, love the plant of the week series. Thank you for all the helpful information. You make it so much easier to decide which plants will realistically do well in my home.
Perfect timing Nick! I just bought a MD from Lowe's just about the time you posted this video. It's a pretty substantial size for $24.95. I had just finished your earlier video on rooting your Monstera from 2018 when this video popped up. I've warned the cats that it will eat their Pounce and Temptation treats if they more than stare at this plant! One of my clivias was moved off its stand to the front porch to make room for my new baby. Thank God it's 80 degrees here today in NC. Thanks Nick ...you're the Man! 😄
I found mine during partial lockdown about a year ago for 8 Euros, she was not doing too well only had 2 leaves but is massive now. She has moved from my south facing balcony to next to an east facing window in my office but I live in the south of Spain.
My monstera is my pride and joy. I got her as a gift at the start of the pandemic, fairly small, and now she's putting off 2 feet leaves with tons of fenestrations ❤️ You're right, they handle high light really well! The biggest challenge is stopping her from tipping over 😂 a stake hasn't been enough, even the stake is leaning!
The way I love my monstera, I split the og plant and then propped a cutting cutting so I technically have 3. I love all of them and they bring me so much joy♡ I can't wait to spend many more years with them
I just ordered a baby one and I'm so happy you're featuring it now! I have no clue when I'll get mine as the weather has been insane in my area (like 40 degree temp swings in the negative).
Love your channel Nick! Can you please make a video for plants for narrow spaces/things that grow vertically? I've got a few corners I'd love to fill and a terra cotta vase I'm looking to add a plant to as well.
I'm so happy I found your channel! I'm pretty new only been a plant mom for a year and I just started a plant group in my apartment complex! I'm going to play your videos!
I agree, they take off. The one I have now is my second, purchased in March 2020 in an 8 inch pot. It’s now in a 16 inch pot, and is 4.5 feet tall and 4.5 feet wide…and that’s tied up on a pole! Mine loves East light 👍
Can't wait until spring / summer 😫 I have two monsteras, both have grow lights just for them and grow in a east facing window. Too dry and the sun is weak. I love moving all my plants outside to turn our porches into jungles
Hi Nick! Monstera's are so pretty, but I definitely don't have room for one. I appreciate all of the detail you put in your videos about specific plants. It's very helpful. Thank you so much for sharing!
I bought my monstera about five months ago and it lives on my back patio because my cats can’t be trusted. It’s quadrupled in size and I’ve repotted it twice! It’s been pushing out a new leaf every week, but I’m guessing it will slow down soon since we are entering autumn here in the Southern Hemisphere
I've had mine for about over a year now, got her as a single tiny leaf and now has like 7 leaves, and a few with the fenestration! She's one of my favorite but I had thrips on her and a lot of her leaves got damaged!
Thank you for the tips Nick! I've had my monstera for about 9 months and it's only had 1-2 split leaves. All other leafs are still the immature form. I've placed it in a southeast facing window and there are a lot of aerial roots now, but still not many fenestrations. Is there anything else I can do?
@@simeonivanov4375 Thank you. I have it on bamboo sticks. But I think they weren't anchored down enough perhaps? I've re-enforced the stems around the bamboo sticks a little tighter and higher for more security. We'll see how it goes.
Yup they like tight stability and lots of water and very bright light as long as it doesn't make the leaves hot it takes more water for this reason I have a short video on my monstera its huge
Hey Nick, first off you're the best.👍Secondly, I propagated a stem of a monstera and 2 leaves have grown in but no roots, what am I doing wrong? What do I need to change?
My monstera is one of my favorite house plants. It's one of the only plants my husband lets me keep in the livingroom (most are outside or in my office room haha) but he's named Goliath and it is just so fun watching him slowly unfurl a leaf! And I will say they are super Hardy. We live in Florida and he is happy as a clam to just hang out in our living room which is moderately sunny most of the day and I water him whenever I remember to haha. The big leaves just really are so much fun! One thing I will say is definitely need something to help keep him upright though. Mine was a beast until I gave him a moss pole. He doesn't really use it but its good for guiding him up the wall haha
Have you tried sticking his aerial roots in water? You'll have to replace the water every day or two until the roots properly develop to fill the container, but they really appreciate the extra water.
@@sandy_carpetsthesecond5013 I haven't! My plant isn't overly huge so I only really have 1 node that I could potentially use ATM above the soil, but he doesn't have roots that are big enough. To put into any water. Although I could use some damp moss and see if that will get him moving! Cuz you're right, I'm sure he'd appreciate the extra water for sure!
@@Karasaywah Ah, right. I mean, if the roots aren't quite long enough, it's probably best to wait. If feeder roots start growing at the end of the aerial roots, I'm pretty sure it caps how long the actual aerial root itself can grow. You should definitely try it when it gets large enough though, their aerial roots grow like that in order to search for other sources of nutrition aswell as attach itself to whatever it's climbing.
My mother had piñanonas galore all my 35 years that I lived with her in Mexico, but they were outdoors in the heat of Northern Mexico and did well! I had no idea they could live indoors.
i bought a 4"inch baby Monstera deliciosa off of Amazon it came today and just unpacked it and decided to name it Dumbo cause the leaves are already huge. Their no splits yet and payed 20 bucks for Dumbo
I have one growing on my patio it is in a 3 gallon nursery pot and stands about 4 feet tall with multiple stems. Should I plant it in a bigger pot? I have had it for over 10 years
I got mine for free. Someone just abandoned a huge specimen in the lobby of my building. It looked so sad and pathetic, drooping over the sides of the basket it was in, no care was given to it. I took maybe 8 clippings and now I have 3 pots which I've taken care of for about a year. My biggest issue with them is they don't stay plump and look dehydrated. I'm scared I am going to water them too much (which I have done many times to other plants). I think I might've added too much drainage to my mix. But they're still doing good and growing at least lol
My monstera has browning on the new leaves, I’m not sure if this is a watering issue or lighting issue. I have it growing in a North facing window currently watering once a week.
This might be silly but could you possibly do a video on how to stake a plant? Is that what it’s called? I’m new to this. But the bamboo stick thing? You just stick it in and clip on the plant?
My babies leaves are so limp 😞 she’s been that way for almost a year. She’s thriving and multiplying with splits, but the leaves aren’t stiff. She’s also gotten a bit of rust under a couple leaves. I need her to live forever.
On my monstera, I have tiny little yellow bugs that won't go away. It actually looks like dust, but if I use the magnify app on my iPhone, I can see them moving around. I haven't been able to identify what they are online. Do you have any thoughts what it could be and what I can do to get rid of them?
My Monstera (Morticia) has grown approx 25 new leaves this growing season!!! I did a video about it, not sure what's going on except for loving the new place with extra light - but 25??!!!! It's also pushing out teeny tiny leaves for whatever reason 🤷♀️🤷♀️
I recently got another Monstera, and just noticed that it's infested with thrips 😩 That's also how I lost my first one. How do I get rid of them? Or stop it from happening? Where do they even come from lol
I just got mine. It’s in a very large black plastic pot, only half filled with some sort of sandy soil. It looks ok. Should I repot now. Or more into spring ( live in south Florida)
Get an older (older than 2) cat from a foster program that has them in a home and can tell you it’s a cat that isn’t interested in plants. I fostered 1 cat as an emergency situation and he didn’t touch any of my 125 plants
