Pothos stems have incredibly interesting roots when grown up a support stake. Just like the Monstera shown, they have the thick aerial roots and the smaller (I call them caterpillar feet) roots which latch on tight. Great video!
@@BrendaHudelson-rk3nm... probably not a good idea. They are great to have when making cuttings, as they will morph into a soil specific root. Your plant wants to climb, and cutting them off, as in wanting to change a support pole, is an extreme stressor.
It's pretty funny how often I see videos (and even popular UA-camr explainer-style videos) where people are attaching Monstera petioles (leaf stalks) to poles or whatnot and ignoring the main stem. Great video - hopefully it helps folks who are currently "miseducated" to understand what they should be doing to get their Monsteras growing the "right way."
I have several monsteras, bigboy green one, albo, thai constellation and i'm happy you put the right information out there to care of those beautiful plants. 💚
Great video. Simple message. Love it. I feel like those starting out in this hobby are super drawn to this plant and they’re not positioned well for success partially because they’re often half hazardously arranged by the growers. Once it became obvious to me there was a back, they made so much more sense. Light, nutrients, and plenty of breathing room for the roots made a difference too. Support is huge too. Good stuff. I’ll definitely share with people trying to master these.
Glad to finally see someone talking about the proper way to face the monstera when staking it. I rarely see anyone talk about this. Which is the reason my first monstera wasn't staked properly..and once those aerial roots, and roots in general really lock themselves in place...it's quite difficult to fix it.
4:49 thank you so much for this! i was looking high and low for a PROPER one and most of them just shows tying the leaves and i wonder why mine doesn't look good. after watching yours i took the opportunity to repot mine and adjust the pole accordingly. now lets hope for the best 🙂
I have even seen some UA-camrs perpetuate the myth that you can grow a plant from just a leaf. you can root a leaf, but it will never grow into a plant, unless there is a node.
If you are talking about the two roots yeah I was really excited when I noticed it. Every node produces one of the really long thick roots and then the internodal area can put out the smaller numerous grippers
Can Monsteras change their back over time? That is the case with my current monstera. I have a rather large one where the internodal space has grown relatively large as well probably because of the lack of light and it seems at least to me to sort of switch directions. I love your videos, especially this one. There are so many myths spread about houseplants and you clearing some of them up is really helpful
I cut my lower leafs multiple times and the plant doesn't even slow down. But I keep all the roots. I just stick them into the pot. I want my Monstera to grow tall like a tree rather than sideways besides the taller it gets the more holes and fenestrations I gets. Once it reach some hight I will air layer it and start a new plant and maybe shorten the old plant a litle so it has room to grow again. And that's my story. I am pretty sure wherever I cut it a new growth poit would appear somewhere. I've done this before.
I think I’am going to repot my plant in the same pot ,I just want to add a stakes in the pot. I have seen other videos and them people says to cut the babies leaves off .I heard that you say that’s not important Thanks for the voice
You could paint it or wrap it in strange wrap. Kinda up to you. If it's too thin it will rot fast. You could always use a thick plastic pole in thr soil and attach thr wood to the plastic
Hi! I have a very mature monstera. It has only 3 leaves. And it's been way too long since a new growth, its just not coming out. No matter how much sun. I just recently changed it's soil. Still no sign of growth. I was think of pruning the oldest stem to stimulate growth. But after this video I am afraid to do so. What would you suggest?
Me: "ahahaha people don't know the front from the back of their monstera?!" Also me: *pauses to take notes on how to differentiate the front from the back and stares at this for 5 minutes*
lmao, there is nothing wrong with not knowing something, its a whole other issue to make a video about how to orientate a monstera and do it wrong lol. There is a few big youtubers that just pump out content but its showing the wrong stuff
It depends on what you want, if you like the bush it's fine as it is. If you want to get larger and larger leaves then I would attach a pole to them. The other thing you can do(im not sure how big they are) is let them get a bit bigger and practice propagating the growth tips and once those root put them in their own pots on a pole and leave your big bushy one be(it re grows after you cut it)
@@sushiegirl@sushiegirl yes I have a much older video where I show how to take decent sized cuttings and the propagation process a few diff ways! The key to success is good light
I have another question for you if I may. My monstera gave me 2 new leaves last month but they’re both misshaped, like half leaves, should I cut them and what causes that? Thank you again 🙏 I just watched your other videos on monstera, very good info 🥰
i avtually put my monstera deliciosa on a pole the wrong way, just stupid mistake i d8snt notice because I did so many. by time i noticed it had rooted in so well the wrong way and into the ground. the plant is twisting to right itself, but its wonky fir a bit hahaha. leaces kinda sticking out weird. the top of the plant is physically turning. there are 2 types of roots on most aroids.
I hope this isn't a stupid question because I have my first monstera deliciosa where do you get your planks And is it just like a wooden plank or is it something special? Or do you have to get Moss poles I am a little intimidated by the planking situation
In my experience, moss poles are not necessary for monstera deliciosas. Just get a wood plank (preferably cedar or something rot resistant), strap your plant to it, and you should be good :)
I just bought pine from thr local hardware store. I forget what the boards were called but they were very thin and about 8ft long so I cut them to the lengths I wanted. Cedar will last longer before it rots innthr pot but more expensive. The most important thing you need to get is UNTREATED. there are chemically treated boards that are sorta green that have chemicals to prevent growth of living stuff I don't know how much it would affect roots attaching but I wouldn't attempt it plus they are again more expensive
My monstera is ornery, so I have a tie around a petiole where a new leaf is coming out bc that leaf made it fall off the support. ;( However, she does have lots of fenestrations on her so like I can't be mad yk?
(BIG GASP) 😱 I just pruned the suckers off. I wish I would have seen your video first! Now I’m terrified that it will hurt or kill my plant! It’s a not a full grown adult Monsterra, but it has some nice taller leaves and one is started to unfurl and it has fenestrations. Praying I have not just murdered my plant as I’m a newbie to Monsterras!

Yeap they do the same thing! I noticed my giant pothos exploded in size when it started shooting out those roots
Can the caterpillar feet be cut off?
Those " caterpillar feet" are known as " holdfasts" they do the same thing many tendrils on other plants, like morning glory or cucumbers.

Funny, I saw that video about chopping leaves earlier. Thank you for the right guide for monstera support.
Yup yup! Thanks for watching
Hmmm I saw it also. Mine looks awful. Should I bury the aerial roots in the soil? And try to lift up and support leaves,?
This was the most informative video I’ve seen so far! Thanks

Will the little heart shaped leaves eventually grow to have Finistrations?!?!?? That’s where I get confused
