What a lovely video Dora. Such a relaxing extended intro. Beautiful. Your sweetcorn and beets are amazing. My beets have failed this year. Yours are immense. Well done. What variety are they? Really interesting seeing the sweetcorn grow again like that. How weird. Oh wow.. the endless bed filling. They drop so much don’t they? 🥹 What a lovely garden centre, the herb centre is. Can’t get over your butterbush squash. A couple of mine have started sending out runners and look a more traditional squash shape. Others are smaller and like little balls. So weird, same seed packet. MINI owner too. 🙌🏼
Thank you Clare, I’m so pleased you enjoyed! I have a feeling this beetroot is ‘detroit’- I planted this variety along with boltardy, Choggia and golden burpees but didn’t have much luck with those others either! They do indeed, I see it as the soil enjoying a feed 😃 Oh wow that is odd!! Seed packets can do funny things. My others are so much smaller but I’m hoping they’ll be edible 🤞🏻🤞🏻 Ooh I’ve always had a soft spot for a mini but I’m in the Audi club at the mo! 🚘
Amazing how much soil settles when we think we’ve filled a bed. But everything looks amazing and yes it’s hard not to get distracted by all the abundance. Looks amazing Dora 👍, have a marvellous weekend ahead, Ali 🌧️🇨🇦
Hi Dora, everything is looking great, great job on the beets. I noticed your garden center sells African Blue Basil, and if you're not familiar, it is a phenomenal bee forage plant.
Welcome back Dora . The beetroot looks amazing and so rounded compared to my wonky specimens. What variety is it ? The National Herb Centre seems like a very interesting place, you're lucky to be living nearby.
Thank you! I am very surprised about the beetroot as my lack of success prior made my expectations low. I’m sure your wonky beets are just as tasty! I thought these were the classic boltardy but now I’m thinking about the lack of growth on the others I’m thinking these could be the ‘Detroit’. I’ll let you know when I cut into them - I’ve eaten all the tops but not cooked up the root yet. It is a great spot ☺️
We got engaged in May this year but I try to limit the ring wearing when at the allotment - I’ve heard scary stories of losing rings to carrot pulling and all sorts 😂 thank you though! 🥰
I also had one ear of corn that grew a tassel! I picked it today and it seems it was mostly not pollinated. I read online that this can happen when the plant is damaged in a certain stage of growth and it thinks the main tassel might be damaged. But idk, my plant didn't seem damaged at all, I think it just happened by chance. The few kernels that were pollinated tasted fine but it was mostly just interesting to look at.
Great video Dora thanks for answering the question I have put weed suppressant down and cardboard on top as unfortunately my plot is rife with mares tale love the recipe as well😊
You’re welcome! Have you tried with just the cardboard (maybe just need extra) before? I thankfully haven’t suffered with mares tale but I’ve seen other plots on instagram struggling with it 😩 hope you can get on top of it! Oh good, I’m not sure whether people like seeing the odd bit of cooking with allotment ingredients so thank you for the feedback
No never tried it on its own may give it a whirl as ot looks like I'm getting the other half of a plot converting our friends in Devon to no dig yes keep the recipes coming 😁
@@aarontaylor3768 ooh yes, get a thick layer down and let me know how you get on! Will do - thanks Aaron. Hope you had lots of delicious scones when in Devon.
Thank you ☺️ I do try to buy/use peat free as much as possible. I have made the odd mistake where it hasn’t been clear on the label but try to be as conscious as possible. Do you have any good peat free compost recommendations?
@@doras.allotment Hi, thanks for your reply. I've only had my allotment since June so I'm in the process of experimentation with different composts although I do make sure they're all peat free. I'm also attempting to make my own which is going well but it seems to magically shrink down to almost nothing. Sadly the cheaper brands like B&Q and The Range don't seem to be too nutritious. I've been mixing bought compost with bought well rotted manure so I'll let you know how this goes in my winter veg beds. It's so great to be able to have these conversations with other allotment owners. Many thanks and happy gardening 🌻
Plot is looking amazing and very jealous of the beetroot & sweet corn success 👌
Please can we have more of the recipe ideas, so relaxing to watch 🥰
Thank you! 🥰 pleased you’re enjoying the cooking snippets ☺️

Isn’t it - I like to think of it as the soil needing a feed. Thank you so much Ali! Have a great week ahead too ☺️
It is my first time on your channel and I have just subscribed. Thank you so much for sharing. Keep up the good work. All the best on this journey.

Nice to have you back Dora , I have used the cardboard method with good results 👍
Thank you! That’s good to hear ☺️ I’m planning on creating some more beds over autumn so I better start collecting the cardboard

Hello 👋🏻 ahh interesting! I wonder if that’s what’s happened here. Did you manage to get much sweetcorn?
Thanks.

Very nice beets! Im also loving the sweetcorn this year. Ah, mic issues - tell me about it!! 🤦♀️🤣
Thank you! Isn’t the 🌽 a treat. Haha I will be making sure I don’t make the mistake I did this week again! 🙃
Lovely video 😊
