Ike Williams - The Legend of the Trenton Tornado

- A look back at lightweight great Ike Williams. NOTE: Not sure if his father died when Ike was three or he separated from Ike's mother in 1932 as there are competing reports. The footage rolling over the Rudy Cruz segment of the narration is from Williams' bout with Livio Minelli.

Rich is the most underrated boxing channel...period
Facts
Thanks so much.
@@AgainstTheRopesWithDos i was just going to write what you two wrote and say i missed the great joe frazier video somehow. i can't wait to watch this one.
yes
Ike talking about memorizing boxing books as a kid sounds like a lot of us who gather here every time Rich releases a new video.
Thanks!
Haha, thanks whitehurstcomic.
I have a good story
I was working in Milwaukee, late 1980’s, helping a customer with a promotion. They had a local rock station doing a remote from their store. I got to talking with a friend of the DJ. He was a golf course architect. Interesting young guy. I told him I was interested in boxing. He told me his grandfather was a well know fighter in the 1920’s and 1930’s. I asked him his name. He said Billy Patrole. I said wow he was a great fighter in a difficult era. I said, he died in Vero Beach Florida in 1983. The kid was astonished. He asked me how I knew. I told him I read the Ring Record Book from childhood. His mom, Billy’s daughter, lived in central WI. I saw the kid the next day. He told me he called his mom and told her he met someone who knew of her father. He said his mom was so moved she broke into tears that someone knew of her dad over 50 years after his career was over. Made my day
@@Johnnybratton802 nice! Most fighters probably have no idea just how high the pedestal is we put them on.
@@Johnnybratton802 Wow! It was only a few weeks ago I was thumbing through an old boxing magazine and I came upon an article on Petrolle.
@@RichtheFightHistorianNate Fleischer called Billy the best body puncher of his career. Tony Zale a close second. Reading news reports of Billy the writer often writes of his body punching. His trainer/ manager Jack Hurley is a boxing legend often overlooked as a trainer, kind of like Harry Wiley is overlooked. Hurley did it all. He stayed close to Billy for the rest of his life.
A dream fight between Ike Williams vs Roberto Duran would be the epitome of war
"Both men weighed in this afternoon at exactly at 135 lbs"
Same day weigh-ins!!!
Day before the fight weigh in had changed boxing. Naturally bigger guys like Roy Jones exploited this to perfection. Roy as a supposed MW never into the ring less than 180. As soon as he had to fight at this natural weight he got cold cocked by two good but not great fighters.
@@Johnnybratton802 Your comment reminded me of Gatti vs. Gamache.
Also, if I remember correctly, Haney weighed in at 140 against Prograis. But, on the night of the fight, he was 165!
@@Johnnybratton802Are you referring to 175 when he was the smaller guy? Because several of the guys at 175 were definitely not the same size as Roy. Even Montell Griffin who was shorter was naturally more muscular than Roy.
@@tmac1499 yep that's right and The Great Roy Jones Jr was also the smaller guy when he fought at heavyweight
Oh my! I cannot wait to go delve this one! He beat Beau Jack two times and was one of the hardest punchers in the lower weight divisions, if not ever! I would love to see a documentary on Beau Jack if you haven't done one already as well.
Edit: actually I just checked and you made one a while ago! I have to watch that one as well!
Thanks, mider-spanman, and yes the Beau Jack vid was done awhile back.
I never known Bo Jackson also boxed. Always figgered he was strictly baseball and basketball.
Learn every day kids!
What was it? From 43 to 45 he had 34 strait victories thats a career these days fighting 10 times in a year and battling Beau Jack Gavilan and others. The injuries they must have carried in to fights against tough opponents kind of puts some perspective on some of todays crop of braggers and posers who lack humility and in the bigger picture arent all of that. That was a excellent docu Rich. Much appreciated.
Thanks, so much, Lester.
Always amazed me how Williams is so forgotten with the skills and toughness he had, you could mistake him for Ray Robinson in some of his fights and vs Jack that was one after first seeing it instantly knew how great he was. Look forward to every video you make, thanks again
My pleasure, Chris.
My Dad Stan Levey was able to train with Ike when he was a kid in No. Philly. His father. my grandfather Dave Levey Levy was a fight mgr and promoter there in the 40’s.
My Dad became the great Bebop and Jazz Drummer with the likes of Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker to Ella Fitzgerald and everyone else in that period, 40’s to the 70’s when he decided to pack it in while he was still on top!!?
Dad also had 7 pro undercard fights under various names and misspelling of Levey and Sam and Joe etc. Not a great record doing it but he was way more focused on music and doing what musicians did in those times. He was good enough to get Sinatra’s respect on one of his fights in Buffalo. Years later he was playing in the Tonight Show Band for Carson and Frank pulled him aside and told him he did real good against his opponent.
That's very interesting. I have cousins that are active on the New Orleans Jazz scene.
@@RichtheFightHistorian Dave is in
one of Nat fleischer’s Record Books late 40’s early 50’s and had some good fighters. Johnny Walker was one fighter Dave had. Dave was promised a title fight by Blinky Palmero if Walker got past Zivic but he lost.
I found the article in The NY Times or Post, can’t remember. I’ve been trying to find a pic of Dave since my step mother and I put together a book on Dad’s career titled “Stan Levey: Jazz Heavyweight”
If you have any ideas on finding any pics on him I would appreciate it. Henry Hascup helped me a lot on getting records on Dave and my Dad Stan. Henry is a great guy
Anyway thanks for responding. I always appreciate your comments!
@@boblevey I'd try Newspapers.com It is a paid service but well worth the price if you're going to do research.
A lot of folks still consider Williams to be one of the greatest Lightweights of all time, among the likes of Duran, Leonard, Gans, Whitaker, etc.; and I think he definitely deserves that kind of recognition. He was beautiful to watch in the ring; the epitome of a "boxer-puncher".
Thank you for another excellent look-back at a fighter who deserves to be remembered.
My pleasure, WolfmanJoe
The saddest part of this documentary is Ike giving his daughter some cough drops and leaving her to die.
Brilliant Rich.Ike was definitely one of the greats.Chicago's Freddie Dawson was very popular in Australia defeating our own Vic Patrick.Information on Freddie would be great. Thanks again Rich.🥊🇦🇺🦘👍
Thank you, Darryl. I'll have to look more into Dawson.
@@RichtheFightHistorian Thanks Rich.Freddie had a very successful time in Australia. 🦘🥊
I used to train at the Broadway gym and South Central LA. Ike Williams came in once and told me that Ali story. He said he ran into Ali later, and he gave him a fistful of money because he felt bad. Ike said, the first thing he bought was vodka, and one of the trainers overheard that and said, Ike, if you were starving, what did you need liquor for?!
"When a man hits you with a straight punch, you is either hurt or knocked out"- Ike Williams
Great episode, Rich. The Ike Williams/Beau Jack rivalry was as good as any rivalry in boxing.
Thank you, Rodrick.
@RichtheFightHistorian the thanks go to you and your excellent channel, sir.
I saw an interview with Williams and spoke about the Jack fight. He thought he was going to kill him and you could see the compassion in his eyes when he spoke about it.
A remember a quote by Teddy Brenner. When he called Ike great and said to Ike “I’d like a pup out of you. Ike replied” the only great fighter I have seen is Ray Robinson”. Fighters in that era complemented each other. Not much trash talking in those days.
Carbo and Palermo deserve their own episode
An in-depth book on Carbo, Palermo, Madden, Dragna, Cohen and the managers' guild would be a classic for true crime/boxing readers
Bro Rich It always blows my mind how you find these old footage, thank you!
My pleasure, Tabernacle.
As a current boxing coach and former competitor and just a huge boxing fan, this is the best boxing channel on UA-cam. Thanks so much Rich.
I appreciate that, Douglas, thank you.
quality work as usual Rich ! I appreciate all the research you put in to this fabulous channel. most of these great fighters deserve to have their story told ! Thanks again buddy.
Thanks so much, Kim.
The amount of punishment the ref allowed him to take at 14:00 is outrageous! Different times I guess
Wow, another masterpiece. Thanks Rich.
Thank you, Nyquil.
Great job Rich. Ike and his contemporaries fought in a tough tough era deep with talent. In an era when a loss did not make you a “ loser”.
Thank you, James. Agreed on that era's deep pool of talent.
You sir do not miss
Thank you, Free J
Rich you make fight fans dreams, another classic, thank you.
Hey thanks, BB
I remember watching Williams vs Jack with my Grandad when I was a kid
Pretty sad at 14:57 when Ike has to ask the Referee to pay attention to the fight! Ike was interviewed for "In This Corner" and said that Bob Montgomery never forgave him for their second fight.
Another work of real art, Rich, and lovely tribute to the man.
Thanks so much, Michael.
I remember watching the Kefauver hearings on TV when in my early teens. It was fascinating. And I remember my grandfather laughing at the Chuck Davey fights. Being from Chicago where the IBC was headquartered it was obvious Daveys fights were not legitimate. His fights with Basilio and Graziano are so obvious they are painful to watch.
Thanks for the amazing video Rich
Thank you, John.
Thanks for posting
Sure thing, Andy.
Once again brillant viewing Rich. By far the best boxing channel on you tube. Love it
Thanks very much J

Another great job! 👍
Thank you, Donald.
The inept referee (Charlie Daggert) in the 1948 Williams-Jack bout should never have been able to ref again. This is the same guy who went through the entire 10-count over Walcott when Marciano knocked him completely unconscious in 1951!
Hey Rich,thank you.Highly appreciated.
My pleasure, David.
Wow ike and bo Jack, a hell of a FIGHT, and a spectacular KO for Williams GREAT VIDEO 😁
Thanks, Donnell.
What in the world was the ref waiting for......
Nice one Rich another super documentary on one of the old school greats on the best boxing channel about. I don’t know what your opinion is Rich but at times I just can’t imagine boxers of today handling fighting in that era. Ike Williams & Beau Jack fighting for a world title bout just six week after their previous fights & against top class boxers as well & Williams having nine fights in one year, unbelievable whilst being a world champion, Most fighters today manage 9 fights in 9 years. Truly a golden era Rich. Interesting that Williams was trying to set up a boxers union, something I think the sport could do with in my opinion, along with some kind of pension scheme as well for when they retire and fall on hard times, wishful thinking though I guess Rich. Great video Brother. 👏🥊
I agree, different times and a different breed of men. But the flip side is that for the most part they burned out before they turned thirty.
Great fighter. Didn't want management and wanted to promote and manage himself, which nearly caused him to get blackballed
Ike!....You're the best. Thank you Rich. From Richard D
My pleasure, Richard.
another good one Rich...
Thanks, Stacey.
I was just watching the Documentary on Him and Beau Jack fights bout a week ago.Beau loves the bolo punch."Dam man what you want me to kill him" is what Ike said to the ref.Ike turnt up the volume because Beau knock out his bottom tooth in the 5th with an uppercut so he decided to knock him out in the 6th or try.
Top notch as always rich 👌
Thanks, Alan.
Thanks Rich
Sure thing, Dread Sam.
Salute🏆
Got the TV working correctly just gone 7am watch this then off to work 👍
I wonder if that beau jack is a relative of beau jack of recent because it's not a very common name 🤔 I think the other beau jack is of either Swedish or Norwegian decent not too sure, good fighter though.
Once the money was gone they stopped coming round, they weren't friends just leeches r.i.p Ike Williams.
Badou Jack? As far as I know they're not related. Cool name though.
@@RichtheFightHistorian oh yeah slightly different lol look at the facial features though so similar
Working up in Scotland today isle of Harris I feel like I'm at home it's not much different to the carribean apart from it's a lot colder, beautiful beaches crystal clear blue ocean I'm going to have swim after wow didn't know this place existed
Rich how do I get a DVD copy of all your videos, there awesome and you should be in the boxing hall of fame for the service you provide boxing & its fans 🥊
Thanks so much for the kind words, Jessica. No DVDs available though :(
Dude where do you even get this vintage footage ? Like I'm a life long fan of combat sports and I fancy myself an accomplished combat sport scholar but you find shit I've never even herd of . Like hats off to you on one hand, but on the other I'm jealous AF of your knowledge. How did you get such an encyclopedic understanding of fighting sports? I MUST emulate it .
Ah, it's mostly distilling boxing magazines and newspaper accounts with occasional tidbits from my old trainer and father thrown in.
Rich you are the GOAT you stay finding gems Ike was the only fighter to beat Beau Jack twice and Jack was a problem in those days in the lower weight classes there was no ducking unlike now kudos again to you Rich 🥊🥊🥊
Thanks so much, Melvin.
Ike Williams vs Julio Cesar Chávez At LW.
Won Julio Cesar Chávez.
What's going on Rich.. Another excellent one.
Btw, I think you said you were going to start a true crime channel, did that ever start up? I'll definitely check it out
Hey thanks, Ousama. I haven't completed the True Crime project yet. It won't be on UA-cam though, it'll be on Amazon or Tubi.

@@RichtheFightHistorian thanks for the reccomendation rich! I was wondering who your favorite heavyweight of all time is?
@@user-sw9kz5jj8j Favorite heavyweight? Ah, I liked all of the heavyweights from the early 1980s. My favorite when I was a kid was Michael Dokes.
@@RichtheFightHistorian Love it! he was too fast for a heavyweight!
Love the boxing work bro can we get a doc on Tim Witherspoon ? Thanks
Ah, Spoon has his own channel. He told his own story better than I can.

Charley Daggert should have stepped in sooner. Ike was a tremendous finisher.
Is there a video on Henry Armstrong?
I haven't done Hammerin' Hank yet, no.
I can't stand how we always have to hear I was a poor black child with 64 brothers and sisters I had to walks up hills in da snow both ways to school my mom needs some new teeth so at da age of 11 I starts boxing WHO CARES just talk about the fights everyone has problems The NFL is the worst about telling these same old POOR ME STORIES
Boxing has always been a great way for the impoverished. Whatever race you focus on within boxing is your own personal bias.I love those stories as much as I love jack dempseys hobo story, ketchel leaving home at 15 illiterate and discriminated against for being polish, primo carnera being illiterate and working in a circus, etc. makes you appreciate the character of a warrior more.
They didn't have school busses bozo.

The uber-talented Ike Williams...and the archetypal African-American fighter boxing/life trajectory; talent, wins, knockouts, money, women, gambling, drinking (and or drugs), then less of all those things, then none of those things, then rock bottom.
If Hollywood gave us a script of Ike Williams' life you would be forgiven for thinking that as a story it was cliche ridden but Ike actually lived that life.
Would love to hear of Jimmy Carter's life story...I always like Carter.
Thanks as always Rich, another great one.
Thank you, Getsmart. Yes, Carter would be an interesting study.
