This was my second Mac, I got it used with the monitor and it was maxed out on RAM and Rage Pro Turbo graphics. It was a beast still in 2000 when I bought it with the money I saved working at Hollywood video. I do not miss lugging or fixing those old boxes.
So much nostalgia...I used to use this beige machine at school running 10.4. According to IT was a pain to upgrade to 10.4 but ran it perfectly. The school didn’t like the Mac Lab and was in the process of getting rid of it for an all PC lab (there was already 2 all PC labs and there were 2 Mac labs, Beige Power PC G3 lab and the Turquoise Power Macintosh G3 lab). Not sure if it happened after I left the school. I miss these machines.
I've seen plenty of VGA connectors with purposely missing pins, so why not DB-15, I guess?
Andrew Tompkins Some VGA cables don’t come with some cables because it’s for ancient pc’s.
@@RetroOnSpeedDial He mean pins i think x)
Dami Nooki Old VGA cables have pins that have been removed
Dami Nooki I was just correcting my self haha
I think those pins, both the ones missing on his DB-15 there and the ones that are often missing on VGA, are extra grounds. IOW they're generally superfluous.
I see you are In it again, I honestly love when you are in the vids.
Thank you. I want to do more of that ^^
It adds more humor to the vids 🤣
I was half expecting a pop from the monitor when you plugged it in, like the g5 lol.
This is the machine I used when I was a Production Editor in the late 90's. A 333Mhz G3 mini-tower, with a Zip drive. I absolutely loved this machine, and thought it was the dogs b*****cks!… Running Mac OS 9.2.2, Quark Xpress, 3.1 Photoshop, and Illustrator. I had it set up pretty much how you have done it, sounds and all. When the company upgraded me to a G4 Cube, they allowed me to keep my old G3 mini-tower. I still have it today!… Nostalgia or what!… 💗
It's a "personality" card not an AV card Ken! Haha. I sold my insanely upgraded Beige G3 with a Radeon 8500 and an accelerated G3. Absolutely regret it. One of my favorite Macs.
I recently bought a beige g3 333mhz for nostalgia, replaced the PSU and fans and installed a SSD. It's whisper quiet now and runs 8.1 like a champ. Love it!

This brings me back to around late 90's / early 2000s as a nerd who repaired and installed Apple Computers for one of the largest school districts in the USA. We had a lot of Beige G3 Towers and Desktop G3 with the Multi 720 monitors. We eventually got the tray loading iG3 Macs and the Summer 2000 slot loading iMacs. By 2004... the eMacs moved in! And don't forget the White G3 iBooks we had on wireless carts! Your videos are fantastic and bring me back to 1998-2002.... Well done!
I closed my game of FreeCell to watch this.
nice
I'm glad you started putting your face in videos, it adds to them a lot.
@@ay_kay_en is it late where you are?
Wow, maxed-out RAM. But not maxed-out VRAM, it looks like. And no modem, either.
Fun fact: the G3 was the Mac to remove the AAUI connector: only 10base-T.
The computer can run up to 9.2.2, but I would *not* recommend you run Mac OS X on it: It's barely supported, and the RCA jacks and floppy won't work. There is a floppy driver out there, but I had issues with it.
Internet Explorer 5.1 would work better than Communicator.
Yes, I had a G3 tower, but it was awhile ago. Back when the computer was "Usable."
Placed a 333MHZ and upgraded the video card to Radeon Mac Edition PCI 32MB and 100mb nic. Installed 10.4 and worked fine with Xpostfacto
This was my favorite Mac I ever owned, just because there was so much that could be done with it. Mine started life with a 266 MHz G3, Rev A logic board, 384 MB RAM, SCSI zip 100, 6GB hard drive, dead SCSI CD drive, and the sound-only personality card. When I was done with it, I had upgraded the processor to a G3 500 out of a Blue and White (which worked, amazingly enough), the Rev C motherboard, the A/V personality card, SuperDrive DVD-R, Zip 250, 2x120 hard drives, a Sonnet USB2/FW400/ATA133 card, a Radeon 9000 video card, a RTL8139 ethernet card for 100mbps networking, and I upgraded the PSU to a 450 watt PC unit (there’s a jumper on the logic board that allows for PC PSUs). I had Mac OS 9.2 for the video player and OS X 10.3.9 for everything else.
The caveat with getting the absolute most out of that processor upgrade was changing the bus speed and processor multiplier (which is a block of jumpers on the logic board). The Blue and White and the Yikes machines also had a similar set of jumpers; AGP G4s migrated this to the processor cards.
Also, I believe the SCSI was worthless for OS X on this computer (at least the Zip drive didn’t function in 10.3.9 for me). XPostFacto could also be used to run 10.4 on this machine, but I never tested this out.
16:57 Thinks its Quicktime version 3 or 4, Then says Quicktime 5 even though the about screen says Quicktime 6
So better with your big head on camera ! x)
Joking, great video as always.
I used my G3mt literally TO PIECES!!!!
LOVE love LOVE
still running.....
Cool! I hear people complain about that case style's appearance, but I always liked the traditional Macintosh cases. Love that monitor, too!
I love these old machines. Remind me of when i was so poor and couldn't afford it. Now i will buy everything.
Enjoyed the video :) Always wanted one of these beige G3 towers.
Mac OS 8.6 is my all-time favorite! Just enough modern features, but still felt personal. 9 put too much emphasis on getting out of OS X's way.
I'd love one, it's a unique beast. Already have a 17" Powerbook g4 and a Mac G5 Dual (air cooled), rare beasts. Both in full working order.
Many of those old connectors have ton of unused pins. For instance, the with the VGA connector the entire middle row (and one other pin) are all connected to ground, and the PS/2 port only 4 of the 6 pins are used.
I had a beige PowerMac G3/333 once. I scrapped it but saved the hard drive and the SCSI card (but not the SCSI cable, unfortunately). I regret scrapping it now.
I assume the monitor uses VGA. Then you can get away with 6 wires (Red, Green, Blue, horizontal sync, vertical sync and ground)
1:00 that very small overhang of the computer over the desk makes me very, very nervous
My 1st computer operating system I ever used was Mac OS 8.6 it was so good it was so good that I went to Mac OS 9 and downgrading because it was so unstable compared to Mac OS 8.6 back when Mac OS 9 was brand-new and buggy are your wallpapers open for the general public to use?
If you're wondering, most CRT mac monitors do have those pins missing because they don't do anything.
Ah. Figured. Thanks.

Interesting. I have the first LCD (flat panel) Apple display and the only one with the DB-15 connector. Its connector has those pins.
You like to see a guy having fun with a computer. I have a G3 kind of flat desktop that was left behind by a company that departed who knows when in this office bldg. There was another Apple computer that was REALLY heavy, also. This is a Brick. No, Boat Anchor! I got special permission to take it home. It doesn't work, but it looks cool. Some day I'll have someone check it out.
I still have a few G3 beige computers with Apple 17' & 20 " monitors. The video capture was a bit lame the same as my 8600. Nice to see some is still interested in vintage mac computing.
How about installing a video capture card ?
Any idea on how to get the personality card that captures audio/video to work, while another video card is in one of the PCI slots???
I had this computer back then!
I rescued one of these from the trash dump for a buddy of mine. He loved it just because of all the AV ports on the back. Unfortunately, it eventually went dead and I'm not sure what he did with it. But he had fun. :)
(1:01)
You missed the 'Jobs' at the Steve
😂
yay the machine works, im as happy as the happy mac~
Hey, I've still got one of these beasts tucked away. Used to run my business from it. Gotta fire it up again one day, same day I fire up my Quadra 840AV.
The first desktop Mac that I owned was a PowerMac 8500. It also had the AV ports. I didn’t have a monitor for it, so I used my TV instead. The resolution was pretty low but, hey, it worked. I even hooked up the VCR via an S-video cable to the Mac and watched films that way. Because, ya know, technology.
And then I got a badass (albeit used) 21″ Radius professional CRT display (with BNC connectors and other bells and whistles). Boy, did it produce a _beautiful_ picture! But that’s another story.
Oh, man. Good memories with my G3 tower. Mine was almost identical to that. As an aspiring video editor at the time, I spent another $300 on the video daughter card. I had to find a third-party seller with one, which took a lot more effort than I expected. I eventually got a Aurora Fuse video capture card and a 9.1GB 10,000 RPM Seagate Cheetah hard drive. I paid almost $1000 for the drive. Oh, the good ol' days. All the cool stuff I made with that machine.
I love your videos thanks for taking your time to this ◉‿◉
Mmm. Nice dusty exhaust vent. I LOVE those!
Ah the memories. Had this same computer which I used when I started getting into desktop video. Adobe Premier 5.1 and After Effects 4. I eventually upgraded it from a G3-333 to a G4-500 CPU. However, I used a Princeton monitor which had an adapter with dip-switches to match it up to the Mac's display output. Eventually upgraded the whole thing to a G4-800 Dual Processor and Apple Cinema Display both of which I still have. After that: i7 iMac 27 inch and Final Cut Pro and now M1.
Oh Classic OS ..so cool..so nice..... always liked it!
I had the Powermac 9600 Mach 5 ( which apple pulled and turned into PPC Servers just as I bought it when the G3 was released ), upgraded ppc processor, maxed out memory, 2 hdd, dual Video ( 720, and a MASSIVE 3D RENDERING DUAL SLOT ENGINE ) Ran both OS9 and OSX. Ran Raydream and Renderman 3D
With those yellow jacks you should be able to use them with an RCA cable on an HDVI tv with changing the settings on the tv.
I run my Apple ][ GS & my Apple ][E on my 48 inch Sony Bravia HD & my Apple ][C on my late Mother's very strange 21 inch Westinghouse TV monitor.
Man, that case is definitely a looker. I would definitely would have taken a few of those over the two G3 AIOs I got. One of my G3AIO has a wings personality card in it, I used it to record some PS2 footage and hooked the output up to the TV so I could record while playing on the TV. And like you the audio was out of sync.
Ayy! I missed the notif but im here now!
Would love to see you review the Power Macintosh 6100/7100/8100, WGS 6150/8150, and/or Mac Clones.
I have one of the power Macintosh 6800(it might be different) but we call it my first born. The bong on it was the first one I heard as a kid and thats when I fell in love with Apple
This was my first own Mac :-)
My high school videography class had 2 of these with like 80 gigs worth of hard drives and 384 megs of RAM each. All rendering had to be done on nights or weekends. Some larger projects had to wait until long breaks. Teacher would go in every few days to make sure FinalCut hadn’t crashed. I think they were like $15,000 each
I really need one of these.
Yes you do
This was the professional version to the educational G3 All-in-One models. Had planned to add one to my collection but it is hard to find the required USB PCI card and Firewire 400 PCI card with the needed software drivers. In addition, these models do not support the apple TV/FM radio card. So, I selected the 5500 All-in-One with its built-in 15 inch Sony CRT, added from my older 5400 All-in-One a G3 upgrade card, the apple video card, and the apple TV/FM radio card running OS 9.2.
6:00 I keep replying this part because I love that sound to death
So my 8600/300 has 6 expansion slots in the back instead of 3. Where there different variations?
6:02 that is my most favorite startup sound off of any mac
Too bad that was only on really old macs :(
Its also on the new ones
Same, but the newer ones sound diff
And you can’t change it easily since it’s read-only-memory on the motherboard.
pin 3 is composite sync, not used on that type of monitor (it uses the other hsync and vsync on pins 12 and 15), pin 8 is never connected on any mac DB15 monitor connector,, the IIgs used the same physical connector, but a slightly different pinout that had 12V DC on pin 8, so they may have completely removed the pin to prevent any issues if the monitor was connected to a IIgs
I looked up the Pin-out for the DB15 Mac Video, Pin 3 is Composite Sync and Pin 8 is Not-Connected. I guess for normal use, only H and V sync are used and Comp Sync is probably for something else like RGB?
the pinout i looked at labeled pin 3 as negative sync
So many memories! I think this might be a bit late but I remember using a program called KidPix on an LC2 back when I was in primary school, would be good to see that again haha
Hell yeah! KidPix. I used it in an episode, but I don’t remember which one, off the top of my head. If you search it on my channel, I’m sure you’ll find it. : )
Ah! It’s on the Macintosh IIci episode.
I'll have to dig it out, if ClarisWorks is on there then it may be nostalgia overload!! Love the videos, keep them coming 🙂
Thank you : )
Loving the new "you on camera" type of video
Thank you. I want to do more of it.
The Beige G3 is the nadir of Apple. I had one at work and it died. A kind-of scammy local company switched out the motherboard, and we had it for awhile until the G4 machines arrived. My memory of Apple's AV cards were that they didn't attempt to filter the chroma signal from the luminance in NTSC. What you captured had severe interference in the form of a checkerboard pattern on the edges of things in the image. A call to Apple's support in the 1990s revealed that yeah, they didn't have any NTSC Comb filtering.
Just put got home from school and the first video that pops up
Games 19 same
I used to have one back in the days when it was new and all the hot shit. Those memories ...
👍👍👍 Qué recuerdos, momentos entrañables, los famosos G3, sonidos maravillosos, escritorios inolvidables... Alucinante... Alucinante... Qué tiempos 😌😌😌😌😌.
I believe the missing pins were N/C or Not Connected/Open, so it shouldn't be an issue
Ignore this comment, I was looking at the Serial version of the connector, not the one Apple uses as a video connector
This brings back a Lot of memories.
I had this computer to play games on when I was a wee lad.
I need to find another one of these.
Wait, no sorry, the one I had was a full blown tower.
Close enough
How was it different? This was the biggest tower Apple sold at the time.
@@ComputerClan Yeah the Beige G3s were mini tower, I had it mixed up with the slightly taller 9500. My bad
Can you make a video installing Debian or Freebsd onto that system. Both are compatible with new Gen PowerPC processors. As a graphic environment I'd go with xfce or something other lightweight. I think the best idea is to use a very lightweight windows manager.
That sounds fun! I might do that.
@@ComputerClan Nice, I would start with Debian and XFCE it's much easier than FreeBSD with much more software support. The nice thing with Linux or BSD is the up to date software incl. Browser.
@@ComputerClan Remember: the Beige G3 is an Old World ROM machine. The last one, with boot icons being in color. You might have to install a boot-loader onto a CD, or use bootx for Linux (not the Apple version, the open source version).
My tower PowerPC G3 had missing pins in the VGA cable too.
I suppose that this monitor doesn't need the composite sync or the NC pins, then. Neato!
oh neat, the floppy cover is broken on mine too
Never had a G3 beige tower. I do however have 2 G3 blue and white towers. They have the radeon PCI cards in them.
The G3 Beige did have a built-in ATI graphics card, either an ATI 3d Rage II+DVD or an ATI 3D Rage Pro, depending on motherboard revision. The GPU has 2 MiB built-in, but can be expanded up to 6. The GPU didn't have 3D drivers for Mac OS X, though.
man it’s midnight I should go to bed.
**krazy ken has uploaded**
Screw sleep and school! The Computer Clan is more important!
Same
The pins that are missing doesn’t look like they are broken. They were missing from the factory.
Also, I have a VGA cable that is missing a pin and works without any issue.
I'm pretty sure the missing pins were for the monitors that had automatic color profiling. This is some kind of cheaper Apple monitor I've never seen before. Instead of having to use a colorometer with certain monitor models you could just press a button and it would auto-correct your color profile with color sync and Apple RGB accuracy.
9:10 "And then we'll go to the Control Panel, and go to *Appearánceé*" I just died there 🤣
Also, you managed to make me laugh with these facial expressions again! Haha!! *nice dust exhaust fan*
I really like it now that we get to see your face more often, it completes the show in a way.
Do you have the powermac g3 all in one
Not yet.
5:08 OMG, I'm sorry, I laughed my ass off and kept watching. You do an amazing Christopher Walken impression without even trying. lo
Haha. Yeah! I wasn't even trying. x_x
Crystal Caliburn, 8 Ball Deluxe, and Looney Labyrinth were awesome classic OS 9 pinball games.
I want that computer.
I’m pretty sure it’s normal for pins to be missing

You should install dual-boot Mac OS X on this... still fun with Mac OS 8.6 or 9.
@Marshall Fairbrother I dont see why not. Create two partitions and install OS X 10.x on the 2nd partition.
I have a PowerMac 8500/150 and i'm getting choppy framerates playing my NES through the video app. Hmm

In 18:53 I saw a microsoft logo on the sample movie
Was a great stable Mac. Overclocked the cpu from 300 to 333mhz

Anyway, I have a question. Do you remember this Macintosh Quadra Ad: ua-cam.com/video/sFNrSlECcqI/v-deo.html Please, could you help me find the soundtrack from it? It is beautiful and I doubt I will ever find it because I think it was made especially for this Quadra commercial.
Try installing os x
14:05 Actually, there's no such thing as Office 2001 for Windows. That must have been either Office 2000 (published 1999), or Office XP (released 2001), also known as Office 2002 mainly because of the individual applications being named Word 2002, Excel 2002... But I also mix up things like those if I don't stop and try to recall correctly. That was quite a while ago.
Right, I meant 2000.
what id do for a computer like that..
I mean, it’s surely just VGA, which definitely doesn’t need 15 pins, so makes sense that the pins be missing.
Subbed as soon as I heard “bon appa-tit”.
So I'm not the only one who used to degauss a CRT just for fun :)
0:40 is it just me or am I the only person that head bangs to the intro 😅
The missing pins on the monitor cable ARE normal. In fact, it caused this funny tech support anecdote:
Customer: "THIS MONITOR DOESN'T WORK."
Tech Support: "What seems to be the problem?"
Customer: "THIS MONITOR IS MISSING A PIN!!"
This guy had a 14 inch monitor. As with most, the monitor cable's plug was missing a few unnecessary pins. I explained that this was normal and, in fact, a good thing.
Customer: "I PAID FOR A MONITOR WITH ALL THE PINS. I WANT THEM ALL!"
A Beige G3 Mini Tower is cool.
