Ken takes a trip down memory lane as he installs Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard on a PowerBook G4. His plan is to setup a Final Cut Express editing system on the notebook, and see how it handles 1080p video.

I think they kept that design before they redesigned the MacBooks Pros (and that odd, rare MacBook model) in 2008.

This laptop has a really nice keyboard, I know many people don't agree but I always liked it.
I have a late-2003 15" PowerBook G4. It was a very nice computer for its day (note of course that the sunset of its day was some time in 2009). I wasn't doing video editing, just pretty standard business nerd stuff. While it's had MacOS 10.5 Leopard on it for over a decade it ran much better with 10.3 Panther plus Panther (and 10.4 Tiger) could handle the Classic Environment even though the machine couldn't boot into MacOS 9. I don't really use the PowerBook G4 anymore, every now and then I'll boot it up when I need to run around and plug into a bunch of different routers to configure them via some direct ethernet connection, that's about it. But I have considered putting in an SSD, getting a new battery, and most importantly a replacement PRAM battery - the one inside has been dead for years and a dead PRAM battery causes a lot of annoyances. But about the only thing I'd do with it is that rare router setup run and - O YEAH - old games! Hehe, yeah, I miss those old games. Not worth it, right?
As i remember (i was very little when my G4 was young) Powerbook G4 always has that yellowish color on its screen, but when the computer is new you barely notice it, but after some years you notice it more clearly.
where i used to live there was a local apple reseller, they had a few retro apples and practically all of the G4 machines had really yellow screens compared to others. it could just be a default settings thing though, the colour temperature is adjustable in displays preferences to this day.

Edit: 16:36 I was really urging you to open Disk Utility. Chances are you could've mounted the drive from there.

I love the last Gen of PowerBooks. Apple did a grand job on the design! Though I would like to put forth a challenge Ken... if your ever able to get ahold of another (non liquid cooled) PowerMac G5... you should try and do a final cut installation sensation on one of those!

I know why the mac partition from your macbook won't show up on Leopard in target disk mode. Your macbook is using CoreStorage which was introduced in Lion and made default in Yosemite. In other words, your macbook is using a method of handling partitions that Leopard never knew of.

I got a 17" PowerBook G4 from my grandma for free, she even had it wiped and put Leopard on it. I used it for a few years to update my music on my iPod touch second gen, which I also got for free! I take what I can get...
EDIT: She also gave me a PowerBook G3 which came with System 8 on it and it appears to have came from a university because it had links to things like Photoshop. I love it but the DVD drive doesn't mount discs so I can't use old software I used with my iMac, yes the original iMac!

I still remember unboxing my new-to-me PowerBook G4 in 2010 and installing Leopard and all of my programs
you could try to fight the yellowing screen by either not using a color-profile (which mostly results in a blue-ish touch - that could makes yours more white), or take a lot of time to create your own color profile which I did on my MacBook1,1 LCD (while it was built into a MacBook3,1 but that is another story).
Pretty sure you're right about that handling a DV camera. I think 65scribe doesn't own a computer or camera made any later than 2004.
On the G4 cpu you can mount well in SD, even in real time but in HD it is difficult even on a dual processor G5.
Then it takes fast discs if you don't want to lose frames.
But it always depends on the codec that is used .....

That sounds perfect. And is it really still in alpha? I remember using it back in 09.
Computer Clan well it recently got traction again . It is on version 0.4.2 and soon 0.4.3 (0.4 was released on January 2016). A wifi manager and possibly the updater might be made for beta (0.5).
The support for it is growing steadily. With support for linux ext2/3/4 , reiserfs and partial ntfs being there.
man after i wanted to do things imovie couldn't i "picked up" a version of FCE4, so this is memories too

i'm curious why you got the MBP involved, and didn't just plug the FW dongle into the TB port on the external drive? does that not work? (of course maybe this is like in the video where you formatted the old imac)
oh fuck i've completely forgotten about that unrendered screen... that was one of the big things that made me go "isn't this meant to be an upgrade to imovie??"
i didn't have an external hard drive back in the day, so my project files all got deleted after i put them on youtube... and now all of those are gone too >.> it's such a shame, i did a lot of greenscreen and splitscreen stuff in FCE4

No, I honestly don’t remember. What exactly are you referring to? I’ve used Final Cut Express, and it was way more capable than iMovie HD. And 6 was nerfed because 7 took over. I don’t think it had anything to do with Final Cut, yeah?

Only the last most powerful G5's could just handle 1080p video, Intel core was a massive power improvement. Yellow is ccfl aging.
1080p is doable on a PowerBook if you are using Apple Intermediate Codec for your editing codec and not any variant of ProRes. 4k is even possible at 24p using this method though your playback will only be about 12fps.
