I’ve never seen Dutch people doing this so far in the Netherlands, however, I’ve never felt this closer to Dutch culture as we have a similar recreational game in Korean like this. Best way to break the ice I guess 😂😂😂
when i was a small kid, sister had a birthday party where we did "spijkerpoepen" and "koekhappen" aswell, but i had eaten so much candy and thrash i had to throw up as i was doing it, all over one of her friend's dress, who was busy koekhappen right next to me :( as for the why: most of these games are a playful way to teach kids coordination and the such
You're telling me that we are the only country in the world that knows about 'koekhappen'? Well that's a bloody crime! Totally unacceptable. It's one of the funniest games you can possibly play. And one of the most delicious ones! 😋
My strategy was just being way taller than everyone so when they put down the string I always could get it because if I couldent how would the other kids can?
"Maybe this is to keep your kid occupied for a LOONG time" well yeah, if you have a birthday party with young kids, this definitely keeps them busy for a while, I can promise you that lol
Yes thats exactly what this is, we also have spijkerpoepen (a whire with a nail is hanging from your pants and you need to get it into a bottle while standing above it) and there is a game where you need to get eat candy from a tile of water with your mouth. Al those games bring me back to my youth, take it from a dutch guy.
Does a version of this not exist in lots of cultures? I've seen this played with lots of different kinds of baked goods and it also reminds me of bobbing for apples
My only question is: why should every game have a purpose other then fun! Imagine doing this among friends and have a laugh with them. The world is serious enough as it is 🤣
Haha, I like it, xx. I think "lomba makan kerupuk" here in Indonesia, every celebrating 17th of August, is from yours😉 I wish I can speak Dutch fluently✌️
In Indonesia, we use "kerupuk aci" (tapioca chips) instead of "ontbijtkoek". We call it "lomba makan kerupuk" (chips eating contest), and play it at "Agustusan" (independence day celebration fest, 17th August).
@Roosje Keizer I think the indo's got it from the dutch. Reason why, Suriname also has this game. And we were also colonized by the Netherlands just like Indonesia was. In Suriname we do this with a sweet roll or as they say in dutch een 'bol'. We noemen het ook wel bollen happen.
Hahaha I won a contest like this in Canada with BeaverTails - basically they are long fried donuts covered in sugar. Did you know that donuts are also DUTCH in origin? Yes! Oliebollen are the first donuts! Geweldig!
After reading the comments I see that this game is not only played in the Netherlands, but in all former colonies of the Netherlands. In Indonesia and in Suriname. In Suriname we call this 'bollen happen'. We use a sweet roll or 'bol' as they call it in dutch. I don't know about the Dutch Caribbean countries if they have this game.
In Indonesia we also play that game, usually in Indonesian Independence day 😂 or birthday game. But in time gingerbread gone, and getting replace by kerupuk maybe coz it easier to find than gingerbread in indo
As a Dutch person myself, there is no real why! It's just fun and you grow up with it. It's just the best game in the Dutch childhood!! I think I'm gonna play it anytime soon bc I realise how much fun it is 😂😂😂
Koekhappen is something I may have done once when I was about 9 or 10 years old and now I'm 19..😞 You put the first things in front of me and I wouldn't know what I should do, before I think about it a long time😂😂 Keep in mind that I'm 100% Dutch😂🤣 Oh, and the ONE time I did it, I didn't even do it with ontbijtkoek🙃😆 We did it with candy I think🤔 And we did it because we were bored at a child-party😆
Next one: fishing a piece of wrapped candy out of a bowl of water with your mouth (and a few towels nearby). First one to get it out of the water, may eat it. When it is a glass bowl, everyone can see it better and have some serious laughs. Some other Dutch traditions: blik lopen en jute zak springen. Koninginnedag was the most beautiful day of the year in my childhood! We all got dressed up by some theme (different for each class) and have a parade though the entire neighborhood for all to see. We played such games outside on the schoolyard and also inside. We drank orangeade. Too bad we only buy junk nowadays. That is fun as well, but not as much fun as the aforementioned. How about getting the whole group together for an experience like that and film it?
OMG .. In indonesia we used to play this kind of game both kids and adult. But we use cracker instead of bread. Thank you for sharing, now i know the origin of this game.
I haven't seen this game in decades. Now that I think of it. It's a bit like 'bobbing for apples', which I only know through English and American media. In stead of floating on water, the snack is now suspended.
You see this usually less and less, usually because young parents are too busy with work and forget about just having fun with their kids. Kids also get a phone or tabled pushed in their hands by their parents who then complain about their kids getting fat and not learning properly. So yeah, it's sad to see this and other fun things disappearing for the wrong reasons. This can be fun for anyone though, looking silly towards others is a form of fun as everyone gets the chance to participate in it. The fact that the cookie is so fragile adds to the fun as you know it will break at some point but never know when or where. It just adds to the fun.
It's mind-blowing to know. In Indonesia, we always play this game when celebration of independence. The rules are almost exactly same, but here, we try to eat 'kerupuk', not bread.
I'm Indonesian and I know this, you usually do this habit when there is a competition on Indonesia's Independence Day every August 17, but we use crackers instead of bread😂🤣
That's interesting. I wonder if the dutch took it from indonesia or the indonesians took it from the dutch. Seems too much of a coincience that our countries with a shared history developed it independently, but I could see it originating in either country, so curious to know which one invented it originally.
It was one of the best things at the childrensbirthdayparty (beside of the presents and company of your friends)... Maybe the cake eating and dipping someones face into the cream ;)
very good
as a dutch person, this actually reminds me how fun this childhood tradition is
might do this on my next birthday party
With apples still good, more difficult tho

they are called 'old dutch games'. Only happens on children birtday parties or children at school.
it's more of an old tradition. pretty sure I've only done things like koekhappen twice in my twenty years of dutch life
it's mostly for children on parties haha
What do you put on the strings in Korea?

"koekhappen" aswell,

Just read some of the comments. It's known in other cultures, but with different foodstuffs. And maybe some variation on rules.
@@tenetennba6529 I know. I had this comment finished before I read the other comments.

It's just a fun game for festivities. You usually play it on someone's birthday or wedding day as a pass time.
My only question is: why should every game have a purpose other then fun!
Imagine doing this among friends and have a laugh with them. The world is serious enough as it is 🤣
i really like the way you are teaching. The vocabular and especially the games and proverbs are more dutch than most dutch people are these days.

No, the Netherlands colonized Indonesia, they probably influenced the culture and 'added' that to it.
