Scientists have discovered that the reason for this is, by the fashion the Dutch eat it, the freshly-chopped onions will be near the eyes. Having your head tilted back, the tears draw backward and end up in the oral cavity, both watering the mouth and already including some salt. The long-term effect is to make the Dutch anticipate the salty herring; in the short term it desensitizes the mouth so that the overly-salted herring tastes only a little more salty.
It has been known in Poland for centuries, not only as the basis of diets during periods of fasting, but also a tasty and healthy snack. Even before 1939, restaurants served it as an appetiser before lunch, usually with a shot of cold vodka.
That's interesting. It's also centuries old here in The Netherlands. Perhaps we had some interaction one way or the other. Gdansk had a considerable sized Dutch community with influence afaik (traders). One of my ancestors came from there. Trade was done all the way along the coast up to the Baltic Sea.
Everywhere along the north sea and baltic coast. Scandinavia, Baltics, Poland, Northern Germany. There's so much herring in the seas here. I bet it started because some of the fishers got hungry and just started eating raw fish by grabbing it from the tail and they were like, hey this is pretty good.

LMAO as a dutch being, I love herring. But I can imagine that I would be just as horrified with fried crickets and spiders or thick juicy worms that are very normal delicacies in other cultures.
It's delicious and healthy too, because of the high amounts of fatty acids (omega 3, 6 and 9) that (raw) that the herrings contain. A good, juicy and tender herring is, like an oister and caviar a real treat, but less expensive. I like it for breakfast, and then I'll have two of them. Yummie!

It seems to me quite a lot like the ‘sill’ that we eat here in Sweden and Finland - and which is absolutely delicious. I’m quite sure that I would like this Dutch delicacy. Even though the ‘sill’ up here is seasoned with different kinds of spices to make it more tasty, which it is. The basic idea however seems to be quite the same.
In June the herring harvest arrives with a festival, and that's the actual 'Hollandse Nieuwe' or Dutch New. It can be called that untill september. Those are the fresh ones and least cured. After that, it's just herring. This year, we had exceptional fatty herring, absolute delight.
so the reason Dutch Herring exists is because back in the day we didn't have good preservatives to keep fish fresh and good for long. in order to not make the fish go to waste they where put into barrels with chopped unions. the chopped unions partially preserve the fish because of its sourness and the unions its taste and smell are/where stronger then the rotting fish allowing for easy consumption even after months of being in a barrel. today the oil/union preserved fish is a national dish and treat of times past. for anyone wondering how it tastes its more oily and union then raw fish, its sour and thanks to the unions a bit sweet its a surprisingly refreshing dish that indeed goes well after or whilst a day of drinking the unions and sourness and oils help stave away an upset stomach and can help you not get nauseas.
