On this day in 2013, Dreamworks' Me and My Shadow was slated to release. To celebrate the occassion, here's a brand new supercut of every clip we have of the film, from test animations to fully finished and rendered clips.
To get you all up to speed:
Me And My Shadow is a cancelled DreamWorks animated film that was slated to release in 2012, and then 2014, before ultimately being cancelled. The film starred Josh Gad as Daniel Grubb, the world's most boring man and Bill Hader as his shadow, who would try to spice up his life and also try to confront a shadow villain who has the power to start a shadow revolution. The film would have been groundbreaking in it's use of both computer generated 3D animation, as well as traditional 2D animation for the shadow characters.
Development for the film started slowly around 2010, with a rough draft script being written and concepts being created. After a rewrite and a change in directors, the film gradually picked up and was scheduled to be released in 2012. After Jeffrey Katzenberg (CEO of DreamWorks) was shown a work in progress cut of the film, he reportedly fell asleep. He noted that the film "wasn't the $200 million movie we needed [sic].". Afterwards, the film was pushed back to 2014 to make way for DreamWorks' other current film, Mr. Peabody and Sherman. When Mr. Peabody and Sherman was delayed again to the 2014 released window originally designated for Me And My Shadow, the choice was made to cancel Me And My Shadow once and for all, as DreamWorks assumed that Mr. Peabody and Sherman would have done better financially. An attempt to pick the project back up was in the works, with Edgar Wright signing on to retool the film into his own vision (notably, the film's title was changed to Shadows), but plans fell through after Comcast bought universal, causing a company restructuring and ultimately sealing Me And My Shadow's fate as a cancelled movie.
Demand for the movie is high, as some clips and concept art for the film has leaked online. It is currently unknown if any new progress has been made with the film, but it's safe to assume that the project is dead.

Let me clear some things up since this video is gaining more and more traction:
-The first clip is NOT the opening sequence for the film. It was a test animation made using assets from the clips that the animators already had to illustrate what the shadow world could look like.
-The clip at 9:04 was found to be fanmade after I published this video. It was a student project made when Me and My Shadow was first announced and is NOT official.

After the success of The Bad Guys and Puss in Boots 2 (And the recent Ruby Gillman looks awesome), maybe we could see Dreamworks reviving this project someday. It would be a box-office hit for sure.

Great! If Dreamworks doesn't make this, some other animation company should. Or at least collaborate with one. This would fit as a psychological story. A tale between two brothers. This concept and story shouldn't have been scrapped. As it would be an interesting blend between two animations. Thanks to anyone who reads this.

Well, after seeing the update in animation, seeing Me and My Shadow with the new graphics could be possible. However, it would depend on Dreamwork's current priorities. Either way, it is left in limbo. As well as other ideas in life. Do hope one of these days it gets made by Dreamworks. Thanks to anyone who reads this.

this movie looks like it'd be a total visual masterpiece with that shadow world and the combination of 2d/3d animation. such a shame it got cancelled.
I think that that last animatic might be some kind of storyboard for a sequence where shadow Dan imagines what he wishes his life was like. We see him multiple times talking about how he wants his and Daniel’s life to be more exciting and adventurous, so I think this was a sequence where he imagines what that would be like, a more exciting environment. He DOES seem extremely happy throughout this sequence, so that’s my theory.

@@SQUIDWORD15 Yeah, it seems like it was made very early into development, his design isn’t the final version. So that makes sense. Plus him imagining a totally different guy instead of Daniel might’ve made him a bit less likeable if he just wanted to get rid of him. In the more finalized clips he wants the best for himself AND Daniel. So I suppose the cut is warranted
Watching these clips makes me miss 2D animation so badly.

It baffles me how this movie already has over 12 minutes worth of footage (and possibly more considering that old animation tests are still being recovered) and DreamWorks just canceled it! We get uninspired crap like Boss Baby, but genuinely creative and fun ideas like this are pushed to the side and eventually discarded. Do better DreamWorks!
Edit: on a side note, I like how you edited some of these clips in "order", that just shows how we could already get a good idea of how the plot would go from a handful of test animations alone lol
While I do think this is a very creative and fun film, I can understand why DreamWorks canceled it. If you put it in perspective of their target audience (children), would that audience choose a simple story about a boring guy and his shadow, or a film about a time traveling dog and his human son? Don't get me wrong, I would have loved to see the film come out, but it would have been a failure (even more so than Mr. Peabody.)

Well I've had to postpone it because the community is currently in the process of finding new clips and we don't fully know the order that they would go in the story

Very bad idea to have cancelled this, looks like a lot of work and passion went into it. DreamWorks needs to revive this project especially if they want to keep up with their latest resurgence in popularity.
I do believe this film could be a success, especially when puss managed to return from the dead solely by its quality.
Yes not a fair comparison, puss is a well known character from the shrek franchise, but i maintain that word of mouth is a great thing.
It's always a shame when a movie with great potential gets cancelled, and this one is no different. That said, it's still amazing seeing these clips and the animation process, and how the overall film could've worked. Just the idea of blending CGI and hand-drawn animation together like this is fascinating! Even if we'll never see this movie come to life, hopefully we'll still get another film that will tackle this technique in a really creative way.

That unknown intro at 9:04 is just wonderful! It emulates vintage cartoons And live action films at the same time! Also the finished footage with the lamp is stunning!!

I’m becoming obsessed with a movie that was never even made
I'm trying to go off of what we've seen to come up with what the story was at the time of its cancellation and the 3 seperate acts of the movie even with 12 minutes of animation found, so heres what I think is accurate. Sorry if my idea is sloppy LOL
Act 1: Daniel is introduced as a boring ass guy working at a boring ass job. His shadow is consistently distracted and has a want to try to change him but doesn't know how. Daniel goes about his day while his shadow narrates how boring his life is as a shadow. Soon Daniel come acrosses Heidi at the same apartment complex as his, and tries to talk to her. They soon develop a bit of a friendship despite Daniel's anxiety and struggling ability to hold a conversation. Soon afterwards, Shadow Dan in the shadow world finds out he has been granted the ability to control Daniel using force such as moving his limbs.
Act 2: At the apartment, Shadow Dan with his powers starts messing with Daniel and controlling him to the point of a breakdown for Daniel who has no idea what's going on. Heidi calls him though and asks if he wants to go get tea which he agrees. Daniel is very nervous now knowing what's going to unfold tomorrow, so he goes to sleep in fear. Soon, Daniel wakes up with a bit of confidence, but Shadow Dan with his new found powers ruin it, and the tea date ends up being a complete disaster due to Dan's actions. Heidi though is very fascinated with Daniel and has new found interest in him as a person. In the midst of Heidi and Daniel's relationship, the evil shadow villain starts making his presence in the shadow world, bullying most of the civilians in the shadow world, causing Dan to have to explain to Daniel what's going on, but Daniel doesn't care.
Now, I can't think of much for Act 3 due to most of the animation tests taking place in the 1st and 2nd act, but I can picture the epic climax of the Shadow world and how Daniel has to give up his control to Shadow Dan temporarily to stop the rebellion, and how Daniel during the fight has to grab Shadow Dan's hand and bring himself into the Shadow World. During Act 3, Daniel and Heidi begin dating after having a successful 2nd date after Daniel and Dan make a compromise to help each other out by Dan not annoying Daniel during his date and Daniel helping Dan with his Shadow World conflict.
After the epic battle ends and the villain is defeated, the movie ends with Daniel and Heidi building a house together and get married and soon Shadow Dan discovering Shadow Heidi, and falling in love. A happy ending for both.

Actually the cancelation of both movies were good business moves, if me and my shadow came out, dreamworks could have very well gone bankrupt. Same for larrikins.
@@SQUIDWORD15 Larrikins was cancelled after Universal bought DreamWorks and was used as a tax write-off against the expense of the studio. It wasn't necessarily because they were afraid of going "bankrupt".

I absolutely ADORE how expressive the Shadow is in comparison to Daniel! Obviously because the Shadow is a 2-D, mono-colored, and quite literally flat, the animators have to make him dynamic to make up for these limitations. But they all still did an AMAZING job, truly went above and beyond to make this character super fun to watch! Such a shame about this movie, I think it could have been incredible (and it still very much has the opportunity to be!)!

It's a shame this movie got cancelled but I really hope this can be a streaming service movie like for netflix or peacock as I love DreamWorks tried to get back into 2D while still doing 3D. I hope this movie comes back after the hopeful success of this new movie

What a cool concept for a film. Can't believe just because one big exec didn't like it's first draft showing that doomed it to unlife like that. Makes me wonder how many projects with this kind of potential get the same or similar treatments and we NEVER hear or know about them.

Unfortunately, this movie would not be profitable if picked back up. Edgar Wright's shadow movie was recently put back into production, but the two are pretty much unrelated.
@@SQUIDWORD15 wait, what? how so? i just saw the 2022 interview/Q&A where he mentioned an animated project called "shadows" and said that he "wasn't directing it anymore, but has done a lot of work on it recently", so i assumed he was talking about this movie? if i search for "edgar wright shadows" only this film comes up. how are they unrelated? do you have a source for this other project? not doubting you, just genuinely curious.
@@nagatwodog9171 There 3 different versions of this film, Mark Dindal's Shadows (2009-2012), Alessandro Carloni's Me and My Shadow (2012-2015), and Edgar Wright's Shadows (2016-Now). Edgar Wright partnered with DreamWorks in 2016 to direct a "new take on a previously developed concept about shadows". Edgar Wright wrote a few scripts but the project never fully got off the ground. Come a few years later, the film goes back into production and that's where we're at now. Most of this is all on the Lost Media Wiki if you want more info. Thanks for asking!

Man, I keep coming back to watching this over and over, admiring the work put into it, in some vain attempt to imagine this being a complete movie one day despite the cancellation. I understand why it was cancelled, but it's still saddening to see. This looked like it would have been a fun little film with groundbreaking animation techniques. Perhaps if it was made at a different time under better circumstances or perhaps under a different studio we would have been able to see it. Maybe with crowdfunding?

god this would've been such a great movie, I love the contrast with 2D and 3D combined we need more movies like that and this one would've just won with flying colors. I just found about about Me and My Shadow an hour ago and I'm already head over heels with this idea! It looks so amazing! The shadow is so fluid and moves with such an enthusiastic expression. GOD what I wouldn't give to see this whole thing in its final state. The story they've crafted seems a little rudimentary though, so here's MY pitch...
Daniel Grub is a withdrawn nobody who spends his days going to work and reading books. He dreams of an exciting life full of meeting new people and places far away, but his anxiety flares up every time he even looks at the door of his apartment. And then, there's Heidi, the girl next door who seems to be everything he isn't. But Daniel, knowing himself better than anyone, swallows his desires and finds contentment in the mundane. Until, one day... his shadow starts to move on its own.
At first, Daniel thinks he's hallucinating. The shadow moves an inch one way when he's sitting still, maybe it seems to get darker on its own, but he's never really sure. It must be the stress from work. Then, when Daniel finally decides to try and ask out Heidi, the shadow takes control. He smiles, clutches his hand along with Daniel's and the two finally have a moment to talk.
Shadan (Shadow Dan) expresses his desire for a life of adventure and romance. He wants to go out and experience the world and all its pleasures! Shadan explains that, in the shadow world, shadows can only experience life when their caster is in the light. Only when the caster's shadow appears in the real world, are they able to feel the warmth of the sun, taste food, touch the hand of someone they love. After explaining all this Shadan does his best to encourage Dan to start living his life regardless of his anxiety. Dan refuses, of course, because anxiety can't just go away. There's no "off" switch.
Shadan gives an ultimatum. Either Dan MUST learn to live his life to the fullest, or Shadan will take over his body so he's able to experience life. The rest of the movie is a story about two very different people trying to share the same space (or body in this case), the relentlessness of anxiety and the importance of bodily autonomy.

I think it’s role in the film is probably to be a daydream sequence for the shadow because he has always wanted the person he’s attached to to live a more exciting life.

I'm not sure what you mean by releasing the same year as CWACOM as the first and second movies came out in '09 and '12 respectively while MaMS was slated to come out in '13 to '14
