I never heard of this movie before. I'm impressed by how charismatic the shadow is, even in the unpolished, unvoiced, out-of-context shots we can see here. That's just how good the animation is. I already like him. Too bad we never got to know him.
I haven't heard his voice but if you show this to me in a week I'll immediately recognize him as Stan the Shadow. I only know the names of Peabody and Sherman because of the title.
They canned this to produce "Peabody and Sherman"... let that sink in for a minute. They had one of the most insanely original concepts for a movie that is universally relatable to everyone's childhood (we all played with our shadows at one point) since Toy Story, and they canned it to produce... a Peabody and Sherman movie, two characters that no modern child even know exists and, even for adults, hasn't been watched as part of the mainstream since 1962... If that isn't a prime example of a corporate leadership failing to fundamentally understand their audience because of their age gap, I don't know what is.
@@reiseclark4908 I'd beg to differ, kids always see their shadows and get pretty creative playing with them, but time travel is not that big of an idea with kids
First thing that comes to mind is how adorable the shadow & protagonist looks! I love how there are only small differences between the two but you can notice how different the personality's are through the animation.
I worked on this movie as an inbetweener on the rough 2D animation. I even animated some of the CG cat because I was trying to learn CG. I was extremely sad when we were let go because I enjoyed working on it so much and loved the crew.

I literally ignored the “CANCELLED” part of the title and was like: “ooo this looks like a really good movie I should watch it after the video” ..... 🙂
The thing is, it's easier to make reboots, since most of the plot and writing is mostly already made, therefore faster to make, THEREFORE, even more movies. They value quantity over quality, and in the movie world, that's not a very bright idea.
Not really the market has a constant grow grow grow idea so it needs to be able to make money and while sad reboots do well because already established franchises make bank compared to new ides or projects
@Thell Wow, that’s crazy, then! Thanks for letting me know! I hope that whoever is trying to revive it is able to complete it all and get some news out about it. I’m fairly certain that it will get a lot of love, especially considering the fact that so many people were upset about its original cancelation.
I wouldn't be surprised if DreamWorks eventually caught wind of this movie's popularity and decided to revisit this movie. If that's the case, then let's hope they don't change the plot.
@@Duct_Tape_Dame a canned project often doesn't go on to see the light of day ever again. Its just the way it is. Even with most of the project finished, they'd have to restart it. After 2016, the 3D engine was improved that DreamWorks uses, meaning pre-2016 movies such as Megamind, Trolls, etc now have to be imported into the newer version and adjusted. Its not that easy of a task.
I’ve never been so upset about a movie cancellation in my entire life, this is such an amazing concept and I know I would’ve rewatched the movie multiple times
I honestly don't understand why this was cancelled, I mean, they came up with this idea around the 2010s? That was amazing! The story could've been great, and the animation as well! Sadly we never got to see it, hope Dreamworks puts it back on track, even though it might not be. The idea was pretty creative, and the animation was astonishing.
Reason os simple. It was a riskier movie. Who knows how popular a more art oriented (shadow in 3d word) movie is going to be, compaired to something simple like a child with its dog adventure movie for children.
The future of Dreamworks could've been saved if they decided to go with a more risky movie like this instead of having to bend to the will of an adaptation. Like, a direct challenge to Pixar in terms of creativity monopoly? It would've completely changed the animation world. I wish I'd won the coin toss and lived in that universe.
DreamWorks doesn't care about quality anymore. Now they only care about quantity by hamfisting garbage that only children now and these days like, such as cheap pop and rap music along with low brow jokes.
What's with big companies always cancelling the best ideas, this is honestly one of the coolest ideas I've seen for a movie it's such a shame that we'll probly never see it
Not just cancelling them. Cancelling them in favor of the worse of the two options since they think it will be the "easy money", and end up failing because of it. And then using that as an excuse to cancel the better of the two ideas since "if the easy money idea that I understood failed, this one I personally didn't care for too much doesn't stand a chance."

When some of these head corporates says "This will not be successfull enough" you can bet your house they know shit and the project that they will prioritize will flop. Every single time.

you started explaining this movie and I loved it. then you said Tom Hiddleston would have voiced the villain and I sobbed. the love of my life in an animated movie that is exciting and stunning? reality is too cruel
It's really disappointing every time I hear of a project like a movie being cancelled because the studio was also producing another movie. Like, why did one have to die for the other to be made? Why were they even working on two films if they were going to scrap one of them, never to see the light of day? Why can they not finish one and go back to the other? "Hey guys! I spent a shitload of money of the Peabody and Sherman movie rights! Why? Because REMAKES! That's why. BTW the project your team has been working on and very excited about is going in the trash so we can fling this flaming turd on the big screen."
I think companies do this so they have options. If Dreamworks had put all their eggs into one basket, say, invested all their animation budget into Me and My Shadow, and something went wrong, or the movie didn't perform as well as they would like, or the market shifts in such a way so this project doesn't look too profitable anymore, they would be stuck. Remember, initially, Me and My Shadow was only pushed back, not canceled entirely. But when PB&S started having delays, Dreamworks went with the project they sunk the most time and money into at that point. Was choosing to make PB&S first the right choice? Perhaps not, but once they sunk more money into it they couldn't exactly scrap it completely and decide to start something over. Not without losing a shitton of money
The difference is, the team still existed and they just put it on the back burner while they did other projects, so they were in a position they could bring it back. This movies team doesn't even exist anymore.
Maybe we should petition them to bring this back into the works (if they'd even listen). This is so awesome and creative! I'd go to see this in theaters for sure and buy the blu-ray release.
at the very least it can be an indie project if theres any dreamworks peeps still wanting to make it a reality, if not, us lil screenwriters can take it into our own hands or just make something inspired by it. we dont have to JUST rely on hoping dreamworks will someday make it

Orders came to him through a monitor on his desk telling him what buttons to push, how long to push them, and in what order. This is what Employee #427 did every day of every month of every year, and although others may have considered it soul rending,”
As an animation major, this movie's cancellation will never *not* be heartbreaking. The shadow has some of the greatest movement in animation I've ever seen, it truly inspires me to make something even half as good some day. At the very least I'm glad so much content from the project is out there for people to see.
This made me think of "Shadow pupeteer", a videogame where the right part of the controller controls your character, and the left one controls your shadow. The gravity of the character is in 3d, but your shadow has lightsources as gravity points. You have to find and fight the shadow pupeteer, an evil guy who steals shadows and control them to attack you and your shadow. It's a simple and short, but really effective game.

Maybe not, all we can do here is just cry and pray
I’ve never loved a movie so much that doesn’t even exist, it baffles me why this was never made. I’ll just have to spend the rest of my life hoping it might still be picked up one day...
This genuinely sounds like a fun movie. I’m sad this movie never got to see the light of day, but hopefully it stands as an inspiration for other studios or people to look up to. And hey, maybe in a decade or so It’ll get a spiritual successor. Or something.
The Princess and the Frog (2009) was Disney's last hand drawn animated *theatrical* release. Their last hand drawn animated film was Winnie the Pooh in 2011.
The animation of this looks gorgeous. The way they went so inventive with the animation of the shadow was just brilliant. Not bound by realism, but more old fashioned? Like things appearing out of nowhere the whole stretch and over exaggerated movements, something we rarely see nowdays. It’s a real tragedy they cancelled this when it had so extremely much potential. I honestly wish they would pick this up again eventually.
So much lost potential, I genuinely hope this movie is picked up again. The itself concept is amazing and I'd love to see the dynamic between shy and awkward Stanley/Daniel with his energetic and hyper counterpart!
@@tuopsy Sometimes they have no choice or say in the matter. Things can go wrong and all that. DreamWorks has a number of animation teams working for them to produce episodes for a dozen TV shows a year and 2-3 movies. Theres bound to be some ideas that just don't happen for one reason or another. Trolls was released in 2016, but originally it wasn't a Trolls film, it started out in the early 2000s as a The Nome Trilogy movie. Then when Trollz fell through in the mid-2006 they started to take interest before approaching Dam Things to get the licensing in 2006. by 2009 they had more solid talks and in 2010 they flat out bought the licensing. So now DreamWorks owns the "Trolls" brand in everywhere but its homeland where Dam Things still owns that right. It took until 2013 then to pick the direction for the film entirely. But its a pretty much example of how things go through, the Pop Eye thing can be anything from a last minute disagreement to a loss of the licensing, to the owners of said licensing not being happy with the direction, or even another project needed attention at the time and resources were redirected to that, etc. ITs not always the executives to blame as a dozen things can go wrong, especially for a project thats a licensing. For this film, the main thing I think was mostly behind it is that DreamWorks "Experimental" era ended.Right now, they have one "new" filma year, and this years film is "The Bad Guys". But the 2000s was when that era had occurred and a lot of what DreamWorks has learnt over time came out of that era. So DreamWorks isn't doing experiments anymore, their focused on things that earn them money, etc. Another propblem is they were bought by universal studios and from 2016 the company has a lot of rehashes, but Unviersal were also in talks long before that so... That could have been a problem for the company. Sure enough if you read the DWs wiki, in 2017 they said the project was in haitus due to management reshuffling that had occurred about then (and most likely IS related to Unversal taking over as thats when a lot of changes occurred in the company). There are dozens of projects either way in the drawers as things that DreamWorks never did, each animator has 3 or 4 projects they wanted to do but failed to do anything with because the climate was wrong in the industry or they had other things to do, etc.
When Stan finally escaped the dang Narrator's Office, gets back blending into reality society, *just to find himself yet another problem...projecting from himself*
From the thumbnail, I believed this would be more of an "inside out" vibe of a movie about Anxiety and how it affects the main character's life in the form of his shadow
I don’t see enough people talking about how PHENOMENAL the animation on the shadow is. Like holy shit is that incredible. I couldn’t animate with that much emotion or liveliness in my wildest dreams

Owl City on a song for this film a tad strange? Consider all the stuff he's done for Disney since Wreck It Ralph (He's apparently also done stuff for parades and such in disneyland) and movies like the owl guardians thing. Also given his love for instrumental music and film scoring even back then, it probably would have been really cool.
If Dreamworks had released this film, it could have been a real gamechanger for them - the whole 2D/3D mix with the shadows concept is just genius and might have even been their own Spiderverse moment. And if I were Katzenberg I'd be very excited by the prospect of doing a 2D/3D mix BEFORE Disney or Pixar and beating them to the punch.
That Bambi sequel was part of Disneys “direct to video” string of sequels, prequels, and midquels from the 90s to the early 2000s of their popular films. That Winnie the pooh movie from 2011, after Disney shut down the direct to video stuff, and was also a theatrical release.
I was an Art Director on this film and worked on it for about 1.5 years. We had some amazing tech and amazing designs. Raymond Zibach and Scott Wills were Production Designers and had such textural, emotional designs. The 2D projections onto 3D geometry was super smooth. My department did all the CG production and we had some fabulous looking characters and sets. It was a lot of the Kung Fu Panda 2 crew (who when this was canceled went on to KFP3). The real problems were always always story, they couldn't get it nailed down. After churning through 3 directors (Allesandro came on after his strong KFP2 stint) Jeffrey lost faith in it and they decided to cut bait. It wasn't because of Peabody and Sherman, just general financing and a need to stop the bleeding in what came to be seen as a problematic production. It was sad but this happens in the industry. We had a great crew, especially the talent in animation as noted.
Genuinely thank you for making this video and spreading the word about this project. I found out it existed at the beginning of quarantine last year and was so obsessed for a while that I storyboarded my own fan scene lmao. Here’s hoping that this video generates enough die hard fans of this concept for Dreamworks to listen.
I doubt it, if you read up on the film, the people behind the project have moved on and the film is in basically permenent limbo. ITs not cancelled, but its stuck in hold for the foreseeable future. And honestly I've been alive long enough to know once a project gets like this, it may never get daylight at all.
Actually, about this time Universal was in talk about taking over the company and they had to do safer projects while this was going on. In addition, the area the company was expanding in all of a sudden was TV. They had a deal to produce 6000+ hours worth of content that came into effect with Netflix from I think it was 2013 or 2014 onwards. The problem was that when a movie flops, it CAN have a implication on a company, and often staff have to be reshuffled. One complaint people have with Cars they pin Pixar over is that it sells on marketing alone and as a movie its not so hot. But. Cars 2 was so successful in the marketing department, that basically... IT paid for the next 2-4 movies. It was a delicate time when DreamWorks couldn't have afforded any risks in other works and this was the consquences of a film being a failure. IT can impact staff, finical expenses, and other projects. ITs not the products are being punished, its that the company basically made a overall profit of about $30 million when it needed the project to make a comfortable $100 million. Sure P+S got $275.7 milion in profit but it cost $145 to make and likely $100 million to promote. And $30 can be lost easily in other expenses along the way. If you example last year, Trolls World Tour made overall a $250 million profit and Croods 2 made $150 million. Trolls had the benefit of merchandise too, so it had more then just the movie profit to eat up. But that combined $400 million made between the two films means DreamWorks is now in a comfortable position to look to continue to expand for the next few years. ITs also coming on top of a highly successful year with Hulu and Peacock programs launched and their all earning the company a sweet profit. This means DreamWorks is now looking into new things, including adult animation. So you can give Trolls and Croods a pass, they did what they had to do to get the company to survive a year that was not in many companies favour due to the pandemic n 2020. To quote a old note from Disney; "I didn't make movies to make money, I made money to make movies". Without money, there are no movies and this is why a flop is bad for any company. Some animation studios live on a fine line that means they have to get X amount of money back to the clock ticks against them and their screwed. Some by 1 failure and others take several.
@@spencerpetunia8268 Can’t really tell you my opinion since I never watched it, but I never said it was bad, I was just saying it did poor in the box office. Or maybe you meant that and I’m a dum-dum, lol

Honestly one of the most disappointing parts of this movie's cancellation for me is that it seems like Adam Young (Owl City) may have been doing the movie's entire score, or at least a large portion of it. As a big fan of both Owl City and his other instrumental projects (Port Blue, Color Therapy, Adam Young Scores) it's crazy to think there may be an entire album's worth of music from him we may never get to hear. That's assuming the tracks were ever produced of course. Would love it if he got another chance to score a film, I think he'd do a great job at it.

The thing is, it's easier to make reboots, since most of the plot and writing is mostly already made, therefore faster to make, THEREFORE, even more movies.
They value quantity over quality, and in the movie world, that's not a very bright idea.

Was choosing to make PB&S first the right choice? you would think that executives would have the insight to know what would be a successful movie and what would be a flop. and yet…. 🤦♀️

But no, they had to go with goddamn sherman and peabody. Because god forbid the entertainment industry take chances with something original
Why does everyone forget about Winnie the Pooh's 2011 film? That was the last 2D animated movie Disney put out.
Wait that wasn’t a fever dream
i really miss the 2d animated movies. they were golden
I prefer 2d animation over 3d, a lot of hand drawn Disney films look beautifully splendid!
They also made a second bambi movie in the mid 2000s, probably before the winnie the pooh movie though
“Oh hey, Peabody and Sherman isn’t doing so well. Let’s punish the other movies in progress instead of the people who came up with the bad one!”
To quote a old note from Disney;
"I didn't make movies to make money, I made money to make movies".
Without money, there are no movies and this is why a flop is bad for any company. Some animation studios live on a fine line that means they have to get X amount of money back to the clock ticks against them and their screwed. Some by 1 failure and others take several.
P&S is actually a decent movie.
@@spencerpetunia8268 Can’t really tell you my opinion since I never watched it, but I never said it was bad, I was just saying it did poor in the box office. Or maybe you meant that and I’m a dum-dum, lol
@@SneakTheOcto poorly recieved movies aren't always bad, its people often go to another movie on at the time.
Example is E.T. versus The Dark Crystal. E.T. won and Dark Crystal took nearly 40 years to have new content added for it as a result. The reason for its current success on Netflix was due to the fact Dark Crystal had that nearly 40 years worth of cult following to build up a fanbase for. But back in the day, it was a badly recieved movie and it wasn't well recieved.
@@AngelEmfrbl Movies can be made without money... it is a shame we are wired to think that no one cares to do things for free or could without paying a dime. We forgot a world exists without money to the point where we might as well eat money to survive.
If Dreamworks allows Pixar to do it, this is something that would work amazingly.
*Edit* Thxs for the amount of support on this comment. I didn't expect it to have many accept my idea.
Considering that Sony bought Vivo from DreamWorks during the restructuring, Sony should have bought this as well.
The protagonist's love interest would have a big A.
Imagine if laika made this movie, i would love that
ok mario
If Dreamworks allows Pixar to do it, every character would be a thick mom.
If this movie ever becomes a thing we need Danny Elfman on the score. And Neil Cicierega.
That honestly would've been a hit film. WAAAAY better than "Peabody and Sherman" was.
I haven't seen Peabody and Sherman in years, all I remember is that crappy TV show spinoff, but this would have been amazing. Really sad they canceled it.
@@skye9471 It definitley would have been better. Even though I don't remember much from pbas me and my shadow would have been much more enjoyable
@@skye9471 Mhm!
You have no idea if it would or not
literally how can you say it's better when you didn't even see it. P&S was such a fun, entertaining adaptation. y'all pissing me off with ur nonsense fr
I liked Peabody but I definitely would rather have had this really cool concept it's pretty sad.. it would be cool if they had a poll or something for us to vote Wich movie we wanted.
Would love it if he got another chance to score a film, I think he'd do a great job at it.
honestly, i mean just taking a look at his own orchestral scores, the soundtrack for this movie would have been incredible. ugh, it would have been so cool :(
Yeah it’s sad
I wonder if someone leaked it at all
same
The sad thing is, if they had chosen this over Peabody and Sherman they probably would have made A LOT of money. Like, its one of the most _actually interesting_ movies concepts I've seen.
Dude imagine there’s also an unreleased hit Owl City song about shadows
I would l o v e that, Adam Young was my whole childhood
he actually was supposed to do the whole soundtrack for the film
@@TheSteelerNation2 w h a t.
Honestly i wonder if Silouette was going to be a track from this. I haven't looked into the time it was made but it sounds like a possibility? :D or at least maybe he was inspired?
Oh. I get the "Stanley"/"Stan" reference. A game called Okage: Shadow King. Pretty interesting idea about shadows.
I thought it was a reference to the Flat Stanley series
It could have given okage the attention it deserves, it's an amazing game honestly
I heard the first mutters about this movie specifically BECAUSE of people comparing it to Okage-- it was really interesting. I don't think there's any conscious connection here from the developers of the concept, but I'm a huge fan of Okage.
@@hilma8073 I hadn’t heard of either but Okage sounds cool. A king of shadows, how cool is that?
I honestly don’t know if this cancelled movie looks all that great, because the main character is pretty boring looking. I know that’s the point, but still. With a really cool concept such as shadows, it might be more fun to have a younger protagonist who’s adventurous and gets right into the action.
Like Spider-Man into the spiderverse. Or something.
If true, I'm on board. I feel like I am the only person who has played Okage: Shadow King. The gameplay was bog-standard, but the humor, art, and music were something else
This would've been such a hit !! Wish they pulled through with this looks like a real upgrade from what pixar/Disney have been doing with animation. Ahead of the current trends from the recent yrs
If we think about it we have:
A awesome sounding dynamic duo
A very interesting sounding villain
A plot that makes so much sense(based on what I’ve heard)
So much potential for toys
So much potential for books
And yet they’d rather have A movie about a boss baby and a movie about a talking dog and the weird kid?!?
This had potential to be as good as How to train your Dragon. HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON!!
I look at the character design and four words came up
"Hey all, Scott here!"
LMAO
OMG WAIT HE DOES LOOK LIKE SCOTT
two words: human wheatley
Am I the only one that sees Neil Cicirega?
@@introverteddragon1770 WAIT NOW I ALSO SEE HIM WTF
In this movie, They had to send stan to the shadow realm...
NOOOO
I'm honestly sad that Peabody and Sherman took over what shadow could have been, I forget that Peabody and Sherman exists and the shadow looks so much better
I actually remember teasers and stuff for this movie and ultimately forgot about it simply because it got cancelled and disappeared. I was actually excited for this movie as a kid.
Do you know if we can still find those teasers today?
@@cjhope7688 honestly I’ve no idea. Your best bet would be to scour google under its original name. I originally saw the teasers on tv, so idk where they’d be at now
