In 2-3yrs, they will say repaint your black doors and walls a crisp white.😄 That's why you should not overdo trends of any kind in your home, just a touch here and there with an overall classic authentic to you look.
I’ve had black doors throughout my house for 15 years. Never go out of style. Makes standard new construction/builder grade doors look so sophisticated.
@@usamnmusclenut I’m thinking about going a dark grey and I agree. It makes the hardware pop and gets away from white which, let’s be honest shows every fingerprint and is not that practical.
Yep, you need those upper cabinets for storage of seasonal items like Christmas cookie cutters and for specialty cooking items you don’t use every day, like a fondue pot.
What is on-trend in your home is anything that you love and that makes you happy. If you don't have the budget to redecorate every time you get bored, go with things that are easier to change out. If you're worried about your guests judging you... do you really need their negativity? At this house, if it's hard to clean, forget it! When I had tile flooring installed in a high dog traffic area, I purposely selected grout that is basically the color of grime. Best decision ever.
I don't think you get Valentina's, and other decorator video's, they are not telling you to get rid of this or that, they are not telling you to redecorate the way they say when you get bored of what ever, they are educating you on ideas in decorating when your ready to make a change, and can afford to change something when you want so you don't make mistakes, or just give you new ideas. You are absolutly correct in people judging you on your homes style, you don't need that negativity, and they are not your friends anyway if they do, unless your home is filthy, or your a hoarder then the person needs intervention, but that is not the topic here, it's about decorating ideas. SOOO since you don't want judged don't judge.
I love redecorating! Now I’m not saying I can afford it! But for the first time in over 20 yrs my husband has finally painted the inside of our house and we our getting new hardwood floors! My normal idea of of updating is selling what I don’t want, then going and buying what I do want to redo my home! I have money to spend on what I want and as long as I saved ahead of time, I can buy that new rug, new bedding ext. but rarely can I afford new furniture!! I haven’t figured out how to get around that, yet!😊
Yessss it’s easy for designers to discuss new trends/ then a year later discuss what’s “out”. What’s not easy is viewers being able to actually make the change. Creators need to realize that too
Same here. Only time I will look at what is trending os of I ever decide to sell my house and i'm looking to make the place look more neutral, rather the colourful, art filled, memory filled cosy place I currently have.
I think that subway tile has a cyclical appeal and will ALWAYS be a classic. When we have gone through every design trend imaginable, subway tile will still remain. Now, I do not think that I want to see it in a multi-million dollar home per se, but I do think it has timeless appeal in the average home and will not go out of style as the mosaics have...
Exactly. Subway tile has been used for decades and decades and will always be a classic choice. (If anything, it's the grout color that dates it) Mosaic glass tile was used in like 2001-2009 and is a bad trend lol.
I think a big issue with these trends is they don't usually translate well outside of their intended environment. So, farmhouse only really works if you live on a farm, and industrial doesn't make sense much beyond a warehouse that's been converted for loft living. I always think the *type* of property is the best starting point for building your design ideas, which won't always be the same as the things you love. I live in a Victorian building in a 'hipster' area and the overall style I've gone for here would look very out of place in a modern apartment.
SO true! The style and setting of the home dictates the style of the inside , or at least it should. My home is traditional in style, once I redid the master bed and bath in a modern style. It felt SO off. I thought it was just me and that would get better and I would get used to it, but no,it never felt right. I finally submitted and redid one more time back to an updated traditional style and viola , it felt right again. I realized that the style just did not go with the rest of the homes overall structure and style.
@@tamb7587 Yes, exactly. And I'm sure the modern style you had gone for was nice enough, just simply not suitable in that setting. In a different building it could have looked great. I''m actually trying to update my apartment now, and it's surprisingly difficult to find anything that really works beyond what I have already. It's as if that style is optimal, and any divergence from that is never going to look and feel quite as good.
Hi Valentina I agree with all of the trends that you say are outdated for sure! Sadly, one day all black will be on that list. Trends are trends and when they are hot they're hot and when they are not they're not. I think staying away from trends is usually the best choice.
I think people need to do what they love and not worry about the current 'Trends,' we live in a society who seems to NEVER be satisfied, always looking for the next new thing..yadda yadda yadda. No wonder North America is such an unfulfilled culture. Learn to love what you have, be grateful for it and if you want to change up a bit, then think about refinishing and buying things to cover things like cushion covers etc. Stay within your budget, love what you have and stop looking at what other people have and be thankful for what you have and your own unique 'you'!
Kinda agree, but on the other hand decorating once and staying in a time capsule house for decades like our mothers, is not fun either. A fresh coat of paint is necessary after some years anyways, why its bad to have fun and make your home more current each time you do it? We only live once and decorating and updating your house is fun :)
I absolutely love butcher block counter tops. Ikea actually had a display with butcher block counter tops on top of black cupboards. It looked phenomenal. Butcher Block counter tops can go with a lot of different color cabinet colors.
@@wisteria808 That is an absolutely gorgeous combination. We were trying to order cabinets during Covid and things got a little crazy sometimes. We ended up having to order some white and some grey cabinets and paint them ourselves. Not ideal. I originally went with blue because I thought I was just buying navy blue cabinets for the lower set and white for the uppers. Things took off with blue from there. Seeing sage cabinets since then I probably would have done that too. I love them. Hope your sister is happy. If not I have some blue ones at a discount.
I just moved into a house with lots of gray walls. At first I thought, yay! So on trend. But after about a week I realized it was really depressing. It just feels industrial. Like living in a house of cinderblocks. So I’m painting.
Sounds like you need to lighten it up with decor and furniture that you love! I would love gray walls, especially a soft "dove" gray. But I decorate with a lot of white pieces, so that is probably why I am fond of the idea.
I did the gray-on-gray (walls/furniture) thing four years ago and it turned into a snorefest! I'm so happy that my floors are a medium wood tone so I didn't have to change those. I switched out the gray furniture for black, warm white and camel pieces because I didn't want to repaint 3000 ft² lol. The gray walls disappeared! It's so warm now!
Yes, I would say because it seems so basic and so many people love it and have it, that it seems trendy, but to me it’s a classic. It’s like saying trench coats are out. And yes, so many other UA-cam designers say the opposite and that it’s timeless.
@@fancycat A true interior designer? She is a true interior designer. She probably should say everyone has subway time, if you want to be unique choose a different style.
@@christinemason1981 she is not a certified interior designer. She has said it herself. She does not have a degree. It is simply something she enjoys doing.
My design philosophy is to avoid trends. A home should be designed around its bones and architectural details. A period home, for instance, shouldn't be stripped of its features because a trend dictates minimalism. Nor should a mid-century home be 'themed' to look like a farmhouse. I spend a lot of time on Zillow, and I am always disappointed to see an 1800s exterior with a mid-1990s interior. I'm not suggesting homes should be frozen in time, but design choices should enhance the home's character, not distract from it. I think subway tile is a classic look that will never be out of style in the right home.
My parents had a house with tile countertops in the kitchen, and I actually loved the look! We didn’t stress about the grout being pristine, so maybe that’s why cleaning it wasn’t stressful. We just used a soapy sponge to scrub it and it looked fine, but I understand if one doesn’t want the grout to get stained in different spots or something. But I loved the look, the kitchen felt like it was from another place, and none of my friends had a kitchen like ours; it felt unique. 😊
Modern farmhouse is actually rising in the trends where I live. I am now first time home owner, and have done I lot of this style. I grew up watching Chip and Joanna Gaines with my mom. So now I think I get to fulfill that style I love, because my mom's house was never that. And how much gray is too much gray. Lol. Slightly offended, but I try to add the wood farmhouse warmth and accents of teal blue like with pillows. Love.
I agree with everything you said except white subway tile. I love it, I have always loved it and I see it around for years to come. A tiled countertop is the actual worst! I’ve only know a couple of unfortunate people who have had that in my entire life, I wouldn’t consider it a trend.
totally agree, there is no way that subway tile is "dead" as it is timeless, neutral and transcendent. It may not be "on trend" right now, but that is completely different, and definitely not indicative of being "out." Almost any interior designer's opinion aligns.
@@ndgrandma1818 I don't believe she has ever mentioned having any training as a designer so I'm assuming her recommendations are based on her personal taste.
I remember when white subway tile hit all the design magazines in the late 90s, and I've never seen it go away. It's clearly a classic and here to stay
I grew up with tiled countertops from the 1920-1940s (3 homes). They were the BEST countertops I ever had. Didn't have to worry about staining, hot pans etc. They all had white grout which we never sealed and which never stained. A little cleanser and a wet rag and they were good as new. The problem is the crappy grout we have now. It is NOT the grout of the old days. I hate that tile countertops are hated on because the quality of materials have gone down.
My husband is a contractor and built our home single handed. Almost all our floors are tile. I have been so disgusted with the grout. We didn't get super cheap stuff but the colors (that I spent so long g picking out) lost their color and the white discolored/stained even in our little used bathroom. This Old House, Fine Homebuilding have addressed this. Before we lay any more tile I'll have my husband make a test board so we can see if it passes the kids/great dane test.
My favorite countertop of all time was custom glazed molded Mexican tile. I walked into a high end tile shop and there was a pallet of the most beautiful green tile I’ve ever seen. I asked how much? I was told they were taking it to the dump. A designer had ordered a specific color. It didn’t match what she had ordered. I told them I wanted it. They charged me the delivery fee so they didn’t have to pay to dump it. I used it on my countertops, kitchen floor, entry floor, master bath floor and HUGE shower. I used cement colored grout. It was GORGEOUS!!! I regret to this day selling that house. I LOVED it. It was indestructible and so very easy to clean. I’ve even tried to buy the house back. The current owners love it as much as I did. I paid $148,000 for the house before I renovated it. It’s now worth about $650,000. That’s a regret I will carry to my grave. There’s not another house like it ANYWHERE! I had a close friend who was a decorator. She said it was a once in a lifetime thing. Those glorious green countertops still haunt my dreams. Strange thing is that I saw where glazed terracotta tile is the latest thing. I did it in 1994.
I love my tile countertops as well. They are stone tile-you can put anything on it, and it never burns. Plus super simple to clean! I have received so many compliments on them, because they are “different”.😊
Farm house won't ever die it's part of the American History and some form or another it will always be in Actually Now The Designers are calling it Nomadic Styling...or Modern Farmhouse...but like History it'll last longer then many modern Styles like black window sills , doors ,etc and stark white... But then again it's still going to be loved in the cities...Growing up on the East Coast modern farmhouse, coastal, etc will always be nomadic as it will always float my boat...the old mixed with the new Esthetic ...
@@sandieedward993 The original name used to be Country or Ameicana so yeah, it is that old. I think classic farmhouse is nice and in the right house can be very cozy but not that faux Hobby Lobby suburban farmhouse they have in the city.
I love it when people aren’t staying with the trends! Do your own thing. Decorate with things that you love. As for me… I guess my style is “eclectic” because I don’t follow a theme or a trend. My home feels “collected”. I buy whatever I think will go well with my house. Ohhh and also I’m not going for a “high end” vibe in my home. Is that what this world is coming to?? I don’t want to fake being rich. Lol
I've never liked open shelving. It collects dust and is a hazard if you live where earthquakes happen. Glad that nasty trend is going. Totally agree with you on the tile countertops. My parents had that in their house. After my parents were gone, it was horrible to clean and dated the kitchen horribly.
I'm seeing green a LOT! Green walls, green couches, green cabinets... and I love it because my favorite color is green. But I will not fall into the trap because I think its a trend that will be outdated fast.
I used the white subway tile in upstairs shower. It is in my opinion something that will always be in. Modern farm house i guess that is what I am. More on the outside not so much on the inside. Honestly it in my opinion is an individual choice. On the other hand i really try to stay away from expensive decor. If i buy something somewhat trendy i don’t pay a lot for it. Because i know myself i will change things out eventually.
I have an off-white Artisan subway tile thats a bit longer and has a more irregular look to it and i have them straight stacked with no grout lines and i love it!
Your whole style today - wow! Thanks for your content! One thing... when you are talking about something going out of style and how more artisanal stuff is "in" and then showing pictures... it's not always clear whether what you are showing is what is "out" or what is "in"... can be confusing...
Hi Valentina! I love your videos! I'm a Realtor in Wyoming, and we are still seeing a lot of modern farmhouse, white subway tile, and gray everything... but I agree with you that it's going away; however, that seems to be going away in other markets, just not ours. I feel like our market here seems to always be about 10 years behind the trends, but then again we still ride horses to work so it's not surprising that we're so far behind the times🤷♀️... Lol! Just kidding😉! Thank you for all of your content on both channels! Love it!!
*Yes to Warm and Matte Finishes* . I never embraced the "gray" trend, it's too cold and depressing for me. Mixed metal finishes, yes. Contrast can be be subtlety, an achieve a higher impact.
Open shelves collect dust and look messy in most homes because owners end up putting mismatched dishes and items on them. I think closed off upper cabinets are still desirable and very practical for most homes. I never got on the Gray rails in decor because I am old enough to remember it from the 80's and I just couldn't go back there. I have SW White Duck on my walls. I love this color for my NE facing home. It brightens it up and is a very workable color. Warm colors are my jam and I am SO happy this trend is coming back.
We put larger format white subway tile in our second bathroom over 13 years ago. We did an almost zero grout line. The tile looks almost new still today. I love it as much as I did when we put it in. I just change the rugs, curtain, pictures as I feel like it. I will always chose classic blank canvas over loud, tiny patterns.
We built our house 12 years ago, and at the time, I chose the dark walnut cabinets and floors that were all the rage at the time, along with busy brown, tan and cream granite. A year later we added glass tile backsplash in cream, clear and tan. Immediately, I hated it, as it was too busy looking, but I let a decorator lady pick it out and talk me in to it. Fast forward to almost two years ago… every designer was telling us we should put white subway tile in, because it’s classic and will never go out of style! We used a longer subway tile with a little “wave” in it, as it looks a bit more modern. We replaced the granite with a very pale creamy gray. Now, the last thing I want to hear is how my choices are “ out”! Too bad, because that cost an arm and a leg to do! WHO can afford to go with the latest trends when it comes to tile and countertops? 😩 My newest choices are not loud, busy or obnoxious. It looks really nice, and it’s going to be staying for many more years. 🤷♀️
I think your choices are good for many years to come. It really is about location. I’m in the Midwest and designers don’t dial into new trends here quickly. We owned a lighting showroom, I was the Lead designer and purchaser at the Dallas Market. Gold became a hot finish and our clients didn’t go for it until 6 or 7 years in. Now it’s popular. Subway tile is popular in new construction and yes Gray still is as well. In my new build I went with creams, taupes & browns. I chose a longer waved white subway tile with white grout. It’s a clean, calm look for the kitchen. If I lived on the coast then maybe I would have chosen differently.🤷♀️
@@LULC0759 I’m getting ready to sell my condo and I have tile in my kitchen that is shades of tan, brown, glass and metal. I had it installed when I moved in 13 years ago. My sister and BIL said if I want top $ I should “get rid of the brown tiles”. And put in what? Grey? I’m doing a few upgrades , but those tiles are staying. (At least until the new owner changes them).
@@mrnt1257 In most cases, you’re going to spend more fixing it than you will get out of fixing it. You have the cost of materials, the cost of labor, the time to do the fix, and then the downward price pressure caused by rising interest rates. Unless the local market is dead, or your condition is awful (so you really must change things because the buyer sees too many red flags), the person coming out on selling for “top dollar” is going to be the real estate agent, not you.
So a lot of my walls are " greige". Sometimes they look grey, sometimes they look taupe. I like the color because it seems to change depending on time of day and what's around it. I also like that it gives a slight contrast to the white trim around my doors.
You are so lovely and so is your home❤ the problem is that trends come and go and = $$$$$. Like many have said in the comments, trends are essentially consumerism on steroids. Same with fashion. I can’t be, and refuse to be, around any of it. I have a newer home with a minimalist-traditional-meets-modern-feel. We all love it and so do our guests. That’s it - we’ll just hang on to our dollars, including anything that’s considered “dead.”
I think the farmhouse style is an ever evolving style. It stays but changes slightly with time. I personally love the minimalistic shades of white and ivory farmhouse/boho style. Still love open shelves but not in the kitchen.
This is my first time watching one of your videos, so hello! 👋🏻 I've loved subway tile since I was a little girl. However, when it came time to redo my kitchen I skipped it because it was everywhere. I went with soapstone countertops and a light-grey, glass, arabesque tile backsplash. Looks gorgeous and unique! About tile countertops: I had them for twenty years in my old, 1950s house. They were great! They didn't stain or crack and were heat-safe. The grout lines were very narrow and easy to clean. I think the grout today is more textured, so it's harder to maintain.
I’m a cabinet girl. 🙋🏾♀️ Could never with open shelving. Don’t need another ledge to dust, especially in the kitchen. And there is something worse than tile countertops…carpet in bathrooms! Will finally be getting rid of that monstrosity in my house. 🥳
I think the house should fit the area/location. When we lived in the mountains, our house was more of a warm, cozy cabin though it was a large house. Our house in the city was a 1928 Tudor, but decorated in a modern dtyle. Now we live in an agriculture area known for its wineries. So, we live in a "modern farmhouse". Styles change so often that it's impossible to always fit....live in what YOU like. BTE, love your upbeat attitude! 👍
I love your videos, the advice you give and your personality. I have used your wisdom to advise my sister in her current house update. I told her to not do anything permanent with bold patterns or color because like you and everyone, we fall in love with a pattern or color only to want something different or fresh later and you don't want to have to tear something expensive out. I lean towards texture rather than pattern in general. Her design is rustic modern and I'm loving helping her, can't help it really ❤️
I agree totally on the grey on grey. I remember the last time it came in. I just moved in to an apartment that is painted grey. It’s about to change! On the whole I prefer an eclectic selection of things that make me feel happy. I’m near the sea so I’m going for light and bright - white, natural fibers with touches of navy and blush
I still like the industrial trend too, I have touches of it in my house, quite a few pieces with black metal. I really like it, and I love how it looks mixed with warmer cosy pieces
I refinish furniture and so I look at trends and colors a lot. Pinterest’s most searched trend for fall 2022 is still farmhouse. I am still liking the trend, but without the “Bakery” and “fresh eggs” sign. I think those are appropriate if you bake or have actual chickens in your yard. I do think farmhouse is still a trend because it feels cozy in so many ways, but there is a need to tone it down.
Being a true country person ( farm , horses , dogs , cats & an occasional visiting raccoon in the barn ! ) the whole " country / farmhouse trend " , past to present , has always struck me as funny ! True country is not contrived or cutesy - homes are welcoming w/ hot coffee & a piece of pie , a place where you are comfortable in jeans & boots & throws on the furniture for the dogs . We don't have time to dust open shelving & dozens of accessories - there's too much work that must be done & when we do have " spare time " ( ha ! ) it's w/ family & friends . Homes have well-worn , well-loved furniture , true antiques that hold meaning & pictures ( not " art " ) of special people & events . No signs are needed as reminders as country people live their philosophies & beliefs . 🐎🐕🐈⬛ 🦝 💟
Subway tile - not trendy, but timeless. In my area we are still doing upper cabinets for the most part. Only the largest of kitchens can do without that storage. I had 1948 original blue & white hex tile countertops. Loved them. No problem cleaning.
I never liked the farmhouse look unless you actually live in a farmhouse and then I love it! Here’s a tip: don’t try to make your home something it’s not and then your style choices will never be out of style.
Just wanted to say...really like your hair pulled back, with the earrings. Looks really good. I agree with about the style comments. Been feeling things are going back to a more refined look.
Here in the Midwest, I still see a lot of homes for sale that are flips and the gray and white stark style abounds. I’m with Valentina: it looks too cold to me. I have soft gray walls and white cabinets and I decided to have a custom wood range hood built and added bamboo shades to every window and the warmth of those small changes completely changed the look of my home.
I did subway in my kids and guest bathroom. No regrets and saved a lot money. Now my own bathroom we splurged!!! I do agree on the grey. I hate it so much
I still have the old school RH leather Kensington sofas and chairs and love them. Have added golden oak antiques as well as black decor items. Yes, it’s very masculine and ‘clubby’ but I love them.
I totally agree with the tile countertops, first house we bought back in 1988 has the little tile countertops, omg I hated those things soooo much! I was with your that point! Never will I ever have that in my house ever again!!
Hello from Scandinavia here 😊 I can confirm that nobody's doing high gloss laminate here. 😄But what most of us use a lot of, and love, is wood. Mostly oak and with a bit of white stain, not yellow toned wood but more neutral toned. Also I feel like here (I'm in Norway) we're a bit finished with white walls, and using more colors than ever. Not bright colors, but calm colors. It's interesting to see how trends are different around the world, I don't think that farm house style that Americans have been very into has been much of a thing here.
I live in Italy and I can confirm that farmhouse and (strangely)Tuscan style are not a thing here. That's why I want to do a shiplap accent wall in my house. It's unique and refreshing.
I'm renovating my daughter's house in Oxford and only a few white (nonstandrad white) walls - strangely I'm going for a few non bright pink and aubergine hues and of course, a dark cosy kitchen with lots of windows! And lots of energy saving changes such as air source heat pump, PV panels, extra insulation and underfloor heating... all in house built in 1865!
Hello from France too where I am a full time interior designer and home-stager - furniture redesigner - style is so subjective but the Japndi style is so dominant at the moment and neutrals ...but people here love picking and choosing from all styles to complete their own unique signature
I think that the colours that we choose are dictated by the light where we live. So hot sunny countries tend to have brighter interiors with lots of colour saturation and colours where it’s cooler and there are long winters tend to favour lighter colours with less saturation
My biggest take away is that RH is Restoration Hardware! When did that happen?? LOL Atlanta is full of people who buy trends. So good on you for speaking to those people. I haven’t seen an IKEA since I left the West Coast. We are all craving what’s new but we also want to embrace cozy; it’s a difficult balance. You modernists struggle more with overbuying current trends and we traditionalists struggle more with embracing change. I appreciate your fairly balanced approach. Tiled countertops? Still great on vacation in Mexico and in Italy. There’s a time and place for most everything.
I don’t follow trends. I prefer style. There’s a huge difference. I have always leaned towards warm natural decor. I don’t like trends at all. Everything you are listing can be repurposed or up cycled into style. Don’t just slap paint on it. Sand it down to its natural color and go from there. I love the look of Early American Oak. It’s not too light nor dark. You can use it with any style of furniture and wall paint (no wallpaper for me!!). I painted my kitchen-living room walls Dusty Pink because my they connect but different textures. Every year the same color comes out with a different name. It’s the perfect neutral and my husband doesn’t mind it. He actually likes female touches around the house but I will not allow any stuffed animals hanging on my walls.
Been renovating for almost 2 yrs, one tiny step at a time. I had builder grade painted puke-green walls in my kitchen for 20 yrs. After we finished educating our kids, our focus went to renovating as opposed to maintaining. I chose glass white subway tile with black grout for the backsplash. It’s the first thing everyone notices. It shines, and in my opinion looks high end. My tile guy tried his best to talk me into white or gray grout and was not happy to have to cut all that glass. I was against white or gray grout, as it made the white standout, and it’s easier to maintain. Maybe it’s the glass, but I wouldn’t change it, ever. I also paired it with high-end white appliances (another no-no apparently), professionally installed wallpaper, a white farmhouse sink, new faucets, new jewelry (pulls), and new lighting. We’re still saving for quartz counter tops and re-staining our cabinets in walnut. Our cabinets are 2000’s honey oak, but custom. So we’re not painting or removing, as they’ve been maintained. So, I think the glass for subway tile with a darker grout, is not as “dated” or “dead.” White painted cabinets will make the kitchen too white. I like the contrast of wooden finish cabinets against the white tile backsplash and hopefully white quartz counter tops. My 2 cents. . .
Subway tile will always be timeless lol. It’s HOW you incorporate into a room that makes it timeless. The dark grout is what makes it look modern farmhouse.
When I bought my house last year the previous owners redid everything in gray on gray to make it more marketable. Seriously, I hated it so much that I removed as much of it as possible. There are still a few small gray things left like the bathroom vanity but, it was worth the $ and effort to change out the larger items (flooring, walls).
Great video on what’s in, what’s out. Definitely agree with the tile countertops!! Lived through the 1990’s with a whole house full of tile countertops…..NEVER again!
I am so with you on the tile countertops! I have lived with them for 20 years! Feel sorry for me. 😭 I love my gray walls because vibrant colors pop on them. I think colors look best against grays, like flowers on overcast days.
Eclectic here. I go for warm. Modernizing the look of Antiques with art/ accessories. Mid century, traditional. I enjoy redoing pieces. Minimalist and tidy. Different but cohesive. Warm and cozy.
I think Modern Farmhouse is the best!! I think Valentina just has her own style and I’d never decorate my home like hers. That being said, she’s funny and entertaining.
I live in a hundred year old Tudor. We’re renovating our bathroom (which is subway tiled feet high all around the room) and was installed in the 1950’s. I’ve never been a fan of subway tile….sooo looking forward to the change!
I have upper cabinets and some have glass in the doors for my beautiful glassware and stemware. To me the in things are drawers. I'd never go back to lower cabinets without drawers. My subway tile is glass with a beautiful wave pattern. The color of it reflects the color of the undercabinet lights. Something timeless...hopefully.
I loved this video Valentina ! I also agreed with all your opinions too .. I think trends exist because people do get bored and they want new and fresh ideas every few years . As a designer , I work with colour , texture and pattern all day so when I go home , I just want calm and lack of pattern or stimulation, so that's what dictates my home . I find it soothing after dealing with the constant choices I have to make each day for clients...I should add that I work in the Middle East , so it's a lot of OTT design !! Thanks again for a great video
I love subway tile in a herringbone pattern or stacked. The long ones or 3D. I really don’t think they’re going anywhere. Been around a long time and I have 3 different shades of Gray all over my house and love it. So I guess it’s more to each it’s own. Just depends on what floats your boat lol. Anyway I love your channel and enjoy your ideas and recommendations😊
Thank you for not just saying this is dead and leaving us wondering what to do about it, you gave a lot of great ideas without having to break the budget.
Back in the day before solid surface countertops, I think tile was considered an upgrade from Formica or laminate. But it was much harder to keep clean.
I grew up with tile counters and my mom still has tile in her next two. I like it. It’s popular in Spanish style houses here in the west. They are pretty easy, I love being able to set hot pots and pans directly on the counter, they wipe up easily and the grout is pretty easy to clean too. I would never have marble- it’s absolutely beautiful but stains and scratches too easily for a hard working kitchen.
Exactly! A cozy, homey, welcoming and lived in home is always better than a staged, cold, museum looking home! I mean black walls? Ugh that would make me feel so depressed. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I guess lol.
I am new to your channel and am just LOVING your UA-cam videos. Your energetic and excitement are fantastic! I especially enjoy when you are talking with one of your family members and you reminisce about traditions that you remember from your childhood. Thank you for your positive energy- so refreshing.
I like the look of individuality, not the look of following a “trend”because everyone else is doing so.
White subway tile is my bff and I’ll never stop.
In 2-3yrs, they will say repaint your black doors and walls a crisp white.😄 That's why you should not overdo trends of any kind in your home, just a touch here and there with an overall classic authentic to you look.
Truth!
I do not trend to like the black trim or walls! Call it charcoal or whatever name you want... not a fan!.
I’ve had black doors throughout my house for 15 years. Never go out of style. Makes standard new construction/builder grade doors look so sophisticated.
THIS 👏🏼
@@usamnmusclenut I’m thinking about going a dark grey and I agree. It makes the hardware pop and gets away from white which, let’s be honest shows every fingerprint and is not that practical.
If you have a small kitchen , storage will always trump style . Keeping the upper cabinets!
I also hate the dust factor on plates and bowls on open kitchen shelving or too many decorative objects in that space in particular.
@@sja1014 Me too! And it really bothers me to think if a fly or spider gets in, they can square dance all over your clean exposed dishware.
Upper kitchen cabinets for life!
@@annemurphy9339 😅😅😅😅😅😅
Yep, you need those upper cabinets for storage of seasonal items like Christmas cookie cutters and for specialty cooking items you don’t use every day, like a fondue pot.
What is on-trend in your home is anything that you love and that makes you happy. If you don't have the budget to redecorate every time you get bored, go with things that are easier to change out. If you're worried about your guests judging you... do you really need their negativity?
At this house, if it's hard to clean, forget it! When I had tile flooring installed in a high dog traffic area, I purposely selected grout that is basically the color of grime. Best decision ever.
@Gloria Alex , maintenance is an under-appreciated aspect of design. I'm not *high Maintenance* and I don't want my home to be either.

Creators need to realize that too
I have never followed trends. I decorate with what I love. Every piece of art and decorative piece I have has a story behind. I love that
Same here. Only time I will look at what is trending os of I ever decide to sell my house and i'm looking to make the place look more neutral, rather the colourful, art filled, memory filled cosy place I currently have.
Agree ! That's the difference between a house & a HOME ! 💟
I think that subway tile has a cyclical appeal and will ALWAYS be a classic. When we have gone through every design trend imaginable, subway tile will still remain. Now, I do not think that I want to see it in a multi-million dollar home per se, but I do think it has timeless appeal in the average home and will not go out of style as the mosaics have...
agree!
Exactly. Subway tile has been used for decades and decades and will always be a classic choice. (If anything, it's the grout color that dates it) Mosaic glass tile was used in like 2001-2009 and is a bad trend lol.
P@@striketochill
I LOVE White subway tile. Sorry its still in for me... probably will be forever. So clean.
100% I live on a legit farmhouse from the 1800s and it works in its own way.
Hi Valentina
I agree with all of the trends that you say are outdated for sure! Sadly, one day all black will be on that list. Trends are trends and when they are hot they're hot and when they are not they're not. I think staying away from trends is usually the best choice.
Way Toooo much black is definitely a trend! I’ll be happy when it’s over. A little black is always necessary however. To each his own.
Agreed
@@Ann1234 I agree - the room behind her is depressing. If I had to give up beauty/welcoming for chic, it’s the chic I would do without.
White subway tile is timeless.
I’m so happy I don’t care what designers say!
My son just did my countertops with butcher's block, and I love it. The color is rich and soft and goes with everything so well. Easy to clean.
I absolutely love butcher block counter tops. Ikea actually had a display with butcher block counter tops on top of black cupboards. It looked phenomenal. Butcher Block counter tops can go with a lot of different color cabinet colors.
My sister just did butcher block with sage green cabinets. So inviting! Love butcher block.
I did the same and ended up painting all my rooms Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace and love it!
I never liked gray walls. Always reminded me of a cloudy day.
Sounds like you need to lighten it up with decor and furniture that you love! I would love gray walls, especially a soft "dove" gray. But I decorate with a lot of white pieces, so that is probably why I am fond of the idea.
Grey is the absolute worst color to live in! Hated it since day one!
@@Sylvelourie I have a lot of white furniture too. Doesn't help much.
Great Idea! Good job!
Great way to recover -- sounds lovely!
Classics never die.
I’ve heard from many designers say that subway tile is timeless. Especially the white subway tiles. 🤷🏻♀️
Yes, I would say because it seems so basic and so many people love it and have it, that it seems trendy, but to me it’s a classic. It’s like saying trench coats are out. And yes, so many other UA-cam designers say the opposite and that it’s timeless.
I have white subway tiles and love them. Timeless.
Yes, a true interior designer will tell you subway tile is classic and timeless. It has stood the test of time for almost 100 years.
I think subway tile is timeless and classic. Maybe the dark grout is dated.
Agreed. Timeless and will never go out of style.
I’m in a rental home with tile counters. I never stress over the grout. My whole house has tile floor. I can’t even think about grout 😂
Subway tile will never be out of style, it is classic, but she doesn't seem to like anything classic.
I agree! I put in white subway tile a few years ago because every designer was telling us that it will never go out of style, that it’s a classic!
I positively love my Italian beige lacquer cabinet with glass doors in my piano room. It's modern and gorgeous. I just buy what I like.
That sounds beautiful!

@@vaderladyl thank you it really is!
I grew up with white tile countertops, too. They were great. I never thought about the grout, but you’re right, it was different, and easy to clean.
My sister in law loves her tile countertop. I dislike it but it’s not my house!!
Modern farmhouse did not really lack warmth or cozy, it lacked sophistication.
Farm house won't ever die it's part of the American History and some form or another it will always be in
Actually Now The Designers are calling it Nomadic Styling...or Modern Farmhouse...but like History it'll last longer then many modern Styles like black window sills , doors ,etc and stark white... But then again it's still going to be loved in the cities...Growing up on the East Coast modern farmhouse, coastal, etc will always be nomadic as it will always float my boat...the old mixed with the new Esthetic ...
Definitely not Farmhouse! Being raised in NY it was unheard of! Always enjoy you Valentina 💕

White subway tile will definitely come back because it’s so practical. And it’s so perfect for setting off decor.
Subway tile is a classic. It will never go out of style.

I love my subway tile. It's in my laundry room and it looks so nice! It's not dead.
Wallpaper is back baby in a big way! From Boston!❤
I will never ever ever like "trends," including black walls. But whatever floats your boat.
Leather chesterfield sofas are timeless
We put larger format white subway tile in our second bathroom over 13 years ago. We did an almost zero grout line. The tile looks almost new still today. I love it as much as I did when we put it in. I just change the rugs, curtain, pictures as I feel like it. I will always chose classic blank canvas over loud, tiny patterns.
V, you look absolutely beautiful with your hair pulled back! So pretty!
Yes I agree
I have white subway tile that I still love, I refuse to think they look bad!
Subway tile is classic, not trendy, and definitely not dead!
100 percent. Subway tile will still be standing when the black wall trend is over.
I've loved subway tile since I was a little girl.
Welcome to the channel!
“People don’t want jam jars, they want a beautiful vase,” Yes! Thank you!😊
I love your videos, the advice you give and your personality.
I actually still love subway tile. I think it's classic in all shapes.
Because it is! Timeless and will never go out of style.
I’m from New York and I say this all the time - I ride the actual subway and it’s the last thing I want to be reminded of in my home! Lol
Hell yeah! I’m with you in that one!
Got gf g 🔝 nofciuu u
I agree. And I think is leaning into modern farmhouse
I love farmhouse, but Inthink it should actually be in a farm house, on a farm, not in the city!!
Agree! I think that with a lot of trends. Loft looks are great in the city and country is great in the country. Both can be chic!
AMEN!
I love your hair pulled back, it looks beautiful on you 🤩
Just wanted to say...really like your hair pulled back, with the earrings.
I hate it so much
I always have light grey walls with very white trim. Love it
Are black walls and doors on this list?
Lol
I do like the larger tile. I was getting ready to say what’s the alternative. Lol I wanted to do open shelves to help me stop the hoarderization.
I still have the old school RH leather Kensington sofas and chairs and love them. Have added golden oak antiques as well as black decor items. Yes, it’s very masculine and ‘clubby’ but I love them.
Love the classics !
I totally agree with the tile countertops, first house we bought back in 1988 has the little tile countertops, omg I hated those things soooo much! I was with your that point! Never will I ever have that in my house ever again!!

Regarding tile countertops 💯‼️I’m with you Valentina!! The *worst* to clean.
I live in a small city in Canada and I haven’t seen any farmhouse style here. I have light wooden countertops and blue in my kitchen
LOL
Atlanta is full of people who buy trends.
You’re so right about the tile countertops! Complete nightmare 😖
I'm so glad I don't follow trends 🤦🏻♀️😅
I love my Coventry Gray walls- they go with absolutely everything. Warmed up with throws in creams and beiges
I just painted my bathroom a high gloss extremely dark gray (ceiling too) with gray and white tiles and gray cabinets .. absolutely stunning room.
Great video on what’s in, what’s out. Definitely agree with the tile countertops!! Lived through the 1990’s with a whole house full of tile countertops…..NEVER again!
I am so with you on the tile countertops! I have lived with them for 20 years! Feel sorry for me. 😭
I love my gray walls because vibrant colors pop on them. I think colors look best against grays, like flowers on overcast days.
I believe flash in the pan comes from panning for gold. A little tiny nugget amongst a bunch of junk lol
I just feel like that map needs to be replaced..that style has seen its day..
I love the contrast you create in you home- honestly amazing gonna incorporate that into my new flat thanks you are great designer
I'm obsessed with the zellige, no grout stack look. That's what's up in my book. Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous.
Good advice there Valentina....we're about to move into a new build in the UK....it's given me things to think about! 👍
Dont follow trends...follow your own style and you will never get tired of it.
Industrial look I still love... so I’m improvising and blending
I don’t think modern farmhouse or white subway tiles are going away anytime soon…but hear! hear! to the tiled countertops!
Thank you for not just saying this is dead and leaving us wondering what to do about it, you gave a lot of great ideas without having to break the budget.
Modern farmhouse to me will always be a nice style to me. I live in the mid west, Tan was early 2000s black and white looks way better.
Love my subway tile. Wont go out of style unlike colored, trendy, busy tiles I would rip out in 5 years
Back in the day before solid surface countertops, I think tile was considered an upgrade from Formica or laminate. But it was much harder to keep clean.
Back in the 70's I would have taken tile counters as opposed to the cheap formica. Formica was the equivalent of wall to wall carpeting in my opinion.
Also for me I want my home to reflect what is important to me and my family. I prefer a home feeling versus a museum.
Exactly! A cozy, homey, welcoming and lived in home is always better than a staged, cold, museum looking home! I mean black walls? Ugh that would make me feel so depressed. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I guess lol.
Then why do you watch this channel?
@@yorkielover1027 Curiosity, to hear this lady's point of view or making fun of her, who knows? She can still watch and leave that comment.
I am new to your channel and am just LOVING your UA-cam videos. Your energetic and excitement are fantastic! I especially enjoy when you are talking with one of your family members and you reminisce about traditions that you remember from your childhood. Thank you for your positive energy- so refreshing.
