Picking the Best Net for Insect Collecting

- In this episode I discuss different types of nets that can be either purchased or made to collect insects. These nets can be used for sweeping or stalking insects. I discuss the different materials of handles and netting material. I also go into depth about the advantages and disadvantages of each type of net, then share my favorite type and what type I think you should get.

Not trying to advertise a product, but I purchased a collapsible aluminum net from amazon that was much better than the wood-handled net my professor provided my Entomology lab. The size is the best, when the ring is collapsed it fits in a small backpack. I carry it with me wherever I go and can quickly assemble it when I see a specimen. It's far lighter than the wooden handle net so I can sweep for a long time without fatigue. The material isn't mosquito netting, more like a tight nylon fish netting but the holes are small enough that only the smallest gnats can get out. Allows me to view the specimens in the net, and has held up surprisingly well even in thorny brush. Only downside is the net aperture is about the same size or slightly smaller than the wood handle net, making high-speed sweeps a skilled maneuver. I'm currently looking for a wide-rim butterfly net to go after Western Swallowtails and Odonata, and I think a wood handle would be necessary for the size. I haven't considered making my own but it seems feasible if I can't find the right product. Thanks again Insect Hunter.

I use both tipe. The muslin type is stronger so I use on bushes to catch arboricolar insect. I use then the mesh type to collect flying or delicate insect like butterfly, drangonfly...
Great points. Personally I like to have a variety. I probably use my mesh net the most because it's easy to see the insect and transfer it to the kill jar … especially for those that can bite or sting. 😀

Hey Jason, could you make a video showing the correct way to collect Lepidoptera with a net? This may be really simple, but I always do it wrong and rub off scales from the wings trying to kill it.

I’ve started collecting insects recently and all the nets I find online are extremely flimsy. Does anyone know a good of brand of sturdy and collapsible nets, I’ve already had a restcloud brand net and I broke it on the first day (partially my fault).
Hey, I pinned a stick insect a few days ago. Everything is good, except one thing. The stick insect now is brown instead of the beautiful green with red. What did I do wrong?
Some insects just change colors as they dry. It depends on what kind of colors the insect has and the chemicals in the exoskeleton. Some insects have chemicals or pigments in the exoskeleton that could change with sunlight or desiccation (drying out) and others have physical color properties, like microscopic holes which would not be as affected with desiccation. I don't think you did anything wrong. This happens to me with dragonflies a lot sadly. I don't know that there is a solution.

I don’t know about stick insects, but Odonata should be colour fixed by immersion in pure acetone. It preserve the colours really well. Sadly youtube don’t let me post a photo of some of mine to show the idea

Well that's Gay stick insects are Phasmatodea, not Odonata. I am not sure this would work or ruin the specimen. In the case of Odonata (dragon and damselflies), the correct procedure is to collect it with the net, put it in an envelope and let it for some hours standing (alive), so it can defecate and prevent greasing. Then you immerse the envelope with the alive specimen inside in pure acetone until it is dead (around a minute or so). Then open the envelope, reposition it and let it soak for a day. Take out, let it dry and store in a sealed clear envelope. (Odonata should not be pinned)

Lindsey Maul you can buy one online from bioquip, but I think building one yourself is much more affordable. I bought all the parts from WalMart.

I dont like using nets, they seem to make bugs scared or uncomfortable most of the time... I Got a cheap dollar store net, but I prefer to use flowers and attracting scents to catch bugs
Corbin Jose yeah for what I do a dollar store net would not last. Pheromones can be useful to attract them!
