DIY Insect Sweep Net for Less Money

- Want to get an insect sweeping net, but don't want to pay a bunch of money for a high quality one. Why not build your own? In this episode Jason Thomas builds a new insect sweep net for just around $10. We discuss the materials used and the methods to make one. Everyone should be able to collect insects without paying too much money. Good sweep nets with shipping cost around $30-40. I knew we could do it for less. Special Thanks to my mother in-law for her awesome seamstress skills.

Thank you for sharing this. I went to Walmart and bought that exact fishing net and used your measurements to make a muslin "net" for it. One thing I changed was keeping the seams on the outside of the net and covering them with bias cut binding made from the extra muslin. In retrospect I could have used French Seams instead. By keeping the seams on the outside it should make seeing/collecting insects from the inside a little easier as they won't have seams to hide in/under.
This is such a great tutorial! I wanted to make a sweeping net but didn't know what to use for the support ring. Thank you!
Formicade Thanks Formicidae I appreciate your feedback. You can do a metal ring but it was taking me forever to find one and too expensive. Just use a prebuilt net for fishing or something and then make your own canvas. It is just easier in my mind. Why buy the norm when you can do it for easier. I am all about saving money!
Thank you very much as soon as I have time I will try to make it!
Noortje Looijenga please let me know how it goes for you!
Insect Hunter I will do so but I am in my exam year so it could take a while
Great tutorial! I need to share this with my undergrad class next year.
At least in my area there are always a lot of used landing nets for sale on Facebook marketplace.
Awesome video! You're definitely my favourite channel on entomology because you're very spontaneous, entertaining and educative. I'm happy to see your family be so collaborative with you.
Giulio Galli Thanks! It’s messages and comments like this that make me want to keep going with the channel even when my life and job are quite busy! It means a lot to hear that from fans!
Good job! Props to your mom
CSC Unit ha ha it was my mother in law, but thanks! Yeah I was very grateful for her help!
Thanks for the video , this was the one I've been waiting for ., although in my case I'll have to do my own stitching .
Raymond Kilminster yeah hopefully I explained it well enough to understand, but if you need help check with local schools because there are often home economics people or Extension programs through the government that can teach you. I would just ask around and you will find somebody that can help you if you need.
Duuuuuude, awesome! would be cool if in the next video u could teach how to build cheap and easy Berlesse! those have been a pain for a low budget guy like me for ever!
Skirmitch I will look into it.
Oc they are easy to make when you know, that's why I want a video showing me how to so I could know XD
Skirmitch I will look into this. Seeing it is much easier than just reading or hearing about it.
I bet you could use an old tennis bat as a frame
Nice! It is worth to make one!
Definitely!
Great video dude!
Hey, Great video, any chance you could provide some info on what grade of muslin you used

Your net looks like our big net to catch a lot of insects
Yes it is a big net and works well for me still.
Mine still works too. I caught treehoppers, a lot of flys, I think what’s is called a black fly and that’s all
Cool,And i do dig a nerd lol
Thanks for watching.
Cool,Your creepy's are way better than england's,I just watched about 20.I may have have a problem haha
Duty James sorry to ask, but what do you mean by creepys? Insects?
We call insects creepy crawleys in the uk.
Duty James the truth is insects can be found just about everywhere and are so diverse. For example I have lived in an area for almost 20 years and still finding new insects and such. Plus the area I live in is a frozen wasteland half of the year. So keep your eyes peeled and you will find all sorts of neat treasures! Good luck with your English insect hunting!
I want to be you
