    In this video I show off a technique using a black light over night to collect moths. This technique works best in the mountains or woods where many moths species dwell. This one I put out near Palisades reservoir on the border between Wyoming and Idaho in the United States. I left this light out multiple nights and found some awesome moth species that I wanted to share with you.

    You know you can use iNaturalist or LepSnap to get IDs? From screenshots I got...
    2:35 The Brother
    2:53 probably Saddled Prominent
    3:00 Zigzag Kitten
    4:00 Elegant Prominent
    10:35 Ornate Tiger
    That spiky winged one might be a lappet moth

    I don't know how you can resist catching and pinning most of these little guys. I love the beautiful colors and patterns so much, but I have yet to learn how to collect and preserve them indefinitely apart from pictures. I guess that's why I'm here!

    amazing variety! i love the little white feet on the ones with the little "eyes" :) you probably get this question a lot, but which camera do you use? it looks awesome for low-light macro photography!
    btw - on the moth with the hidden "eyes" that has 2 things sticking out of its abdomen, i believe those are for finding/attracting mates! you've got a little casanova on your hands!

    Wine ropes can also attract moths. I made a wine rope before and I saw a big moth in it

    That’s cool, I feel like the moth might be a spirit animal of mine. There’s something mysterious and magical about them. I love the fuzzy legs ❤ I hope to hatch some ❤

    I finally got around to posting this comment ... mainly to say thanks for the honour of being the first photo on your 'Wall of Fame'. Green Tiger Beetles are pretty exotic looking creatures in my part of the world and it was my first day looking for them so you can imagine how excited I was ... beginners luck I guess!

      Not yet. Maybe one day. I have a hard enough time making videos and putting in that time. A 5 minute video can sometimes take me 30 hours including planning, filming editing and travel.

    Would you ever be able to make a videos, if you haven’t already, on proturans (best soil sample?), megalopterans, plecopterans, or even phasmotodea (I cannot find any!). These are just my personal favorites :)

      @InsectHunter  3 роки тому +1

      Yeah I don't have a ton of experience with most of those groups, but if I run into some in large amounts or a situation that is interesting enough to share then I may make a video on it at some point.

    I live in north Alabama and I spent roughly two hours on Google trying to find the name of a beautiful moth that I've seen several times around the house , it's solid white , but it has a black dagger design down the center of it's back , where the wings come together, the hilt of the dagger sits on the head . Never did find out what it's named lol . Can y'all tell me ?

      Out of storage from a colleague, but you can buy them on amazon for about 20 bucks. I haven't tried with LEDs, but should still work although they generate less heat so they may not be as effective as an old fashioned light bulb.

      @InsectHunter  3 роки тому +1

      No I haven't yet. Moths are such a challenge to identify unless they are really unique. Otherwise you have to be a moth expert and study the veins of the wings which is too much of a time commitment for me.

  • @sabersibertiger1520
    @sabersibertiger1520 3 роки тому +1

    Correct me if I'm wrong: I've tried to do research on the moth species you have here.
    First, the one you had in your hand that revealed the beautiful eyes on its underwing may be a Beautiful Yellow Underwing: butterfly-conservation.org/moths/lime-hawk-moth
    On the beautiful white moth with the large black spots, after much searching, I didn't find anything. It is possible, though not likely, that you have discovered a new species. Please let me know if you find out what it is, I would be very interested.
