Can Smoothies Make You Fat?

  • Question from Chef AJ 's audience on youtube : Can Smoothies Make You Fat (compared to chewing)?
    One of the most disappointing things I have encountered in my efforts to teach optimal nutrition for disease reversal, is hearing plant-based doctors publicly expressing negative opinions about smoothies, weight loss, omega-3s etc. based off of their own untested and untrue theories, rather than saying the truth, “I don’t know anything about smoothies because I have never tested them”.
    None of us know everything, and I think the most respectful thing you can do for someone is to say” I don’t know” when you don’t, rather than make up your own hypothesis and teach it like it’s factual. This harms people!
    One example I heard today, is a doctor actually saying that the reason our program works is that omega-3s suppress the immune system like corticosteroids, and that the side effect is that it will make you more vulnerable to infections. CRINGE!!
    Our clients not only reverse their diseases and become healthy, they find they no longer get the usual colds and flus they used to get, because their immune systems works so well after being on the Goodbye Autoimmune Disease Protocol. That wouldn’t happen with a suppressed immune system.
    Alas, doctors are not trained in nutrition, and that lack of training shows itself with these ridiculous theories. I had to apply my experience as a genetic researcher and a medical doctor to truly understand the impact of nutrition on cellular function, cellular repair, and immune function and develop a protocol that optimizes all of these to create the incredible results we have in disease reversal and optimal health. And I never teach theories, only results.
    In this video I address another cringy and untrue theory -that green smoothies will spike blood sugar or cause weight gain.
    I definitely went off problematic idea here. Enjoy!

      Dr G changed Dr Michael Klappers mind about smoothies. Whole foods plant based high fiber nutritional dense diet cover's everything. Blended whole foods juice Is what I call it from my Vita Mix recipe book that comes with the blender

      Correct me if Im wrong; but Esselstyn's focus is on heart health and recovery, and by extension the maximising of the endothelium/Nitric Oxide process, which starts by the biome in our mouth while chewing. Esselstyn has, when asked about smoothies, pointed to Dr Goldners excellent results using smoothies in autoimmune illnesses, thru super nutrition.
      But basically its two preferences for two slightly different goals, and method for maximising the results. So its not a zero-sum game, where one is correct while the other is incorrect.

      @Howard Then Yes! Perfectly stated.
      I do "swish" the smoothie in my mouth before swallowing.....but I would imagine it doesn't have the same effect as chewing.

    I have been WFPB for about 5 years. Lost weight but got stuck at one weight for a few years. I never included smoothies or chia seeds in my diet due to this myth of ‘dont drink your calories’. Started this 10 days ago and have lost 7 lbs and feel great…

      I’m exactly the same, 4.5 years WFBP lost 20 and then stuck with about 15 more to go. Diving into the rapid recovery, as Dr G says it also works great for fat loss. On day two and it’s not as hard as it may sound doing fully raw. I love the chia in the smoothies and avocados and broccoli. Trying to ignore the “low fat/no fat” voices in my head. Thank you for sharing your recent success breaking your plateau!

      Me as well! Wfpb for 14 years. Still have 20 lbs to go with eating high carb. Oatmeal in morning, potatoes or beans with veggies for dinner. Ditched the oats and now included the smoothie with 1/2 cup flax seeds. Does anyone know the protocol or where i can find Dr.goldners weight loss plan? I see she eats quinoa, Avocados, but don't hear too much about grains or potatoes.

    Thank you Dr. Goldner for continuing to educate us. I have been WFPB SOS since the end of Nov. 2022. The weight was coming at first but then stalled out since the middle of January (down about 11 lbs).
    I happened across your video you did with Chef AJ "Is rapid weight loss safe" and started blending 1 1/2 pounds of the power greens with chia/flax for the last 6 days. Down 4 lbs so far and feeling more energy than ever!! You are truly a God send!

    I have been plant based and have been doing your smoothies for two years now. I received my complete blood work results, that came back perfect! My protein was smack dab in the middle range at 7.7. The normal range. Now tell me how that’s possible if I’m only eating plants and not animal lol

    I much prefer smoothies to eating raw veggies because I have had more dental work done as I get older and just LOVE drinking my veggies (otherwise I end up roasting or sauteeing them - and I'm trying to wean off using too much oil in cooking)...so yeah, the green smoothies REALLY taste delish and it satisfies my appetite for a long time...I can drink it over a long period of time..plus I know i'm getting my "hyper" nutrition...love what Dr. G validates!

    I saw an interview with Dr. Esselstyn and he referred to Dr. G as "Goldner". I lost a whole lot of respect for him at that point. He did make reference to the results she was getting, BUT still went on a rant about chewing your greens. Results are the obvious choice. Love smoothies!!!!

      You can still 'chew' when consuming smoothies. It helps your body to produce the enzymes needed for digestion.

      @@sophiem5921 yes, definitely you can chew the smoothie. But Dr. G. has also addressed that and said it doesn't make a difference. Looking mindfully at your food before you eat it, also starts the digestive process.

      I get it believe me I do. I think people get stuck - something they do helps people so they decide their way is the new law, but as scientists and doctors we need to be open to learn and evolve. I always think the best of people so I don't think they are lying but rather stubborn or even indoctrinated or blinded by belief rather than open to learning. Either way it does NOT help people who need to get healthy.

    My 👯‍♀️sister’s Meniere disease was complicated with so many symptoms like vertigo or dizziness, feeling of fullness in the ear or ringing, hearing loss, imbalance, motion sickness, nausea, or nystagmus and I had to gave her Dr Madida herbs from UA-cam recommendation and after she using the medicine, she was with me last month telling me that she is cured completely and don’t longer experience any of the symptoms anymore.

  • @danyale06

    This subject is like the debate between being vegan vs whole food plant based. We know that being wfpb is healthy even though one could be vegan by having a diet consisting entirely of beer, chips and Oreos. Wfpb is a vegan diet due to its principles but it’s not the only vegan diet.
    The same could be said for the average green smoothie vs one recommended by Dr, Goldner. In general, smoothies can have tons of calories and can be filled with not so healthy stuff. Then Dr Goldner’s smoothies are nutritious yet have a low calorie density.
    The concern for the average smoothie contributing to weight gain is a valid concern. The ability to consume and absorb higher amounts of calories already “pre chewed” can easily pack away the pounds. Stuffing one’s self with pounds of greens with a little fruit for taste is obviously not fattening and will rarely causes excessive weight gain.
    I feel that Dr. Goldner should have made that distinction because everything she talked about was very accurate when it came to her smoothies. The whole calorie density spiel we get is why smoothies aren’t often recommended. They demonstrate this by showing the difference between eating 20 whole apples, 20 apples turned into apple sauce and then 20 apples turned into apple juice. The way you attempted to discredit the argument against smoothies contributing to weight gain will confuse someone newly introduced to the wfpb way of eating. Many people became overweight by eating Freelee’s Raw Till 4 earlier iterations. Without understanding concepts like de novo lipogenesis and what actually causes weight gain and fat gain in humans will leave a newbie lost.

    • @BrookeGoldnerMD
      @BrookeGoldnerMD  Рік тому +4

      yes I do mention at the end that I am not talking about "fruit smoothies with maple syrup" but hyper-nourishing green smoothies. :-) The problem is others do NOT make that distinction but rather say SMOOTHIES cause weight gain, rather than certain types of blended foods can cause weight gain.

      I have been WFPB for 5 years and the last 2 years felt that I am not as energetic as the first 3 years. I put that down to not including enough veggies and particularly greens. What Dr Goldner recommends is the topping on the cake . In 10 days alone, following the protocol i lost weight which I couldnt on WFPB and have my energy back.
