I was fortunate enough to see VH live in concert 3 times. The ‘Diver Down,’ ‘1984’ and ‘For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge’ tours. This particular vid comes from the 1984 tour in which, to my recollection, the guys did not dangle from guide wires, however, they did wear those very same stage clothes. Van Halen was so much a part of my teenage years and were pretty much THE sound track of the 80’s generation of kids. So glad you guys discovered VH and are enjoying the excitement we 80’s kids experienced with VH. Enjoying your reaction vids guys! Keep rockin! 🤘
I have also seen them 3 times (It wasn't enough, was it?!)....Diver Down (My first truly attended concert), 5150 and the Monsters Of Rock tour when it was at the LA Colosseum (What a day THAT was!).....but I think I may be a little earlier in the generation than you, in that I think of VH as the band that broke out onto the scene in the late '70s and blew everybody's minds.....and I always resist using the reference "80s" with them, although most of their music was released in that decade...because, to me, that takes on a certain connotation that I don't think applies to them...I'm not saying that's what you are implying, BTW. That being said, I too have many memories from the eighties, from my late teens to well into my twenties.....living it up, partying, and even enjoying much of those "eighties hair bands", as well as the other music that permeated that decade......and maybe getting a little growth along the way.....certainly life experience, haha!
I was like 12 years old and was at this concert at the Providence Civic Center in Providence, RI -- and they shot some of the footage there - swinging from the cable. Tremendous. My introduction to live rock music. They were out of this world entertaining, and the place went nuts for hours. Everyone smoking cigarettes and weed, everyone drinking. That was a different time. People did what they wanted at shows back them. I was a kid looking around in disbelief. 🤣
Not many people know this song is about a car! lol The "jet" sounds on the slow part came courtesy of the blow drier David attacked Eddie with during that part. It's actually funny. 😊❤️🤘🤘
Original lead singer David Lee Roth, featured here, was/is a black belt in martial arts (I forget which ones), so when you see him doing jump splits off the drum riser, kicks, drop-to-the-floor splits and flourishing a sword or microphone stand, that comes from that training! I'm pretty sure the "swinging on a cable" thing was just for the video. You're right....although they have gone a little darker, from time to time (particularly with the "Fair warning album), Van Halen is mostly about fun.....and could be referred to as "California party rock".......but, to me, their music is best described simply as "Van Halen"....they are unique.
All the stage scenes were filmed inside the Spectrum in Philadelphia. I was at this concert in 1984, they filmed the stuff on wires in the afternoon not at the show. If you notice it’s empty inside the Spectrum during the wire shots.
Remember, Van Halen was the opening act for Journey and Black Sabbath and blew away the audience so they were coming early to see them before they hit the top.
I saw their first concert with Sammy Hagar , Monsters of Rock in 87, although i prefer Diamond Dave. But Michael Anthony was only one swinging during his solo that starts with him chugging Jack Daniels. Probably iced tea or he'd have been dead .
I think the mountain climbing cables/cords are just for the video since I saw Van Halen in 1982, 1984, (1991?) and 1998 and never saw them use them in concert. I was a teenager in the 80's. Van Halen was the best at a time when rockstars were almost gods. When Van Halen debuted on the national stage in 1978, Eddie's guitar playing was almost like it was from another galaxy since it was so innovative and awesome.
