As a Canadian, it’s Soccer, but as someone who was mesmerized with the video, I don’t care.
Interesting point. I wonder what that means for other sports, whether they could be treated in a similar way. For example a super simplified sailing game might be really fun, just using a single piece of wood to catch the wind for example.
I even called it, that when I saw the thumbnail in the discord, that it was gonna be a Rocket League video! But that’s great 😃
At first I was thinking that for more advanced futbol/football/soccer players, controlling the ball may become almost second nature. As in they would not have to focus too much on actually dribbling and manipulating the ball due to lots of experience and learned comfort with it. With that in mind, I felt that an actual football video game, like FIFA or PES, could capture more of the strategy, teamwork, and tactics.
However, controlling the ball likely does need more focus at times when doing some skill moves or trying to control a moving or midair ball. The ball can bounce off the pitch and the connection made to the foot can be a bit off, driving the ball off course. Similarly, the positioning of a car in Rocket League, which represents the foot, with respect to the ball is essential in maneuvering the ball, with the large football used resulting in an appropriate amount of surface area for the cars.
So, I agree that traditional football video games gloss over the physics and coordination needed to control the ball, instead the ball is basically glued to the feet of the dribbler depending on the animation and action. Rocket League does have a greater focus on this aspect of the sport, but does away with other things like fouls or Earth-like gravity.

This video is a wonderful and in depth discussion of the topic. I've been trying to tell my friends this idea since Rocket League was released. I agree with what was said in the video and in other comments about how Rocket League focuses on how awkward it can be to precisely manipulate your vehicle or foot to control the ball, and how other soccer, or football, games focus more on the high level strategy, team play and positioning.
However Rocket League still requires teamplay and positioning, especially in high level play. With fewer players on the field, there are no designated roles for each player, but play style and strengths still develop per person. Each players positioning, abilities, and decisions have much more impact on the game. The smaller team sizes and contained arena are similar to games like Futsal or indoor soccer, and present new opportunities for intelligent play and unique teamwork ideas.
In the video it's said that in real life there are no boost pads, but there is a different analogy that can made here. Choosing to back off and gather boost is similar to choosing to walk or stand instead of running. It's a way of managing your energy levels and fatigue so that you can make plays later, and is important in real world soccer as well as Rocket League's soccar.
Though I don't think any video game will perfectly recreate what it feels like to play soccer, I think that Rocket League is still the most accurate because it gives players the most control over the ball and forces players to work together.

Nobody is going to ask “what do you mean by__” when you say soccer. It’s completely unambiguous. Football could describe any number of games or balls so it’s not a good term for anything.
And let’s be real here. The real reason britons et al are so opposed to using the word soccer, is nationalism. They don’t care which term is better for ease of communication, they just don’t want to sound American.

I'm american but "soccer" is a stupid name why america always the odd one out we don't use the metric system we call a sport where you use your feet soccer. And a game where you mainly use your hands foot ball. But it is all down to history and how sports evolve at least that's my opinion
