I think they still do! Some of the frames have their teeth showing
I think it works here. With the teeth they seem hostile. Without them, they seem harmless. Though if you watch the large plants pop out of their pipes, you'll see their teeth for a few frames.
The Piranha Plants also bare their teeth when they make the "Ee" sound, just like we do! Nintendo went all out with making the lip sync work on these guys!
I've heard of hills being alive to the sound of music, but who knew this game would take it literally?
From a design standpoint, I appreciate how this introduces you to the idea of Wonder segments. There's nothing fundamentally different about the gameplay, you're just dodging piranha plants like usual, but the violent shift in context it makes it crystal clear that things are gonna get WEIRD when you set them off.
They really hit us with that in the 2nd level of the game 😊

There's a reason they had us play the first and third levels of the game in the demo - they wanted to save this masterwork for the full experience!

Honestly this moment was a little TOO good and idk if the game ever reached this hilarity again.
This game and stage transport me back to my childhood day when I received my first game ever from my parents, SNES Mario world. The marching music, the cute and smiling Prince Florian, and Princess Daisy and Peach's face.... I could not stop smiling and laughing like a child. It gave me the feeling of a brief dream, as if I had become a child again.
