  • As you saw in our last video we had some tire issues on our last trip which made us look a little more in depth at loading and hauling a truck camper onto certain truck models specifically the RAM 3500 vs. the Ford F450. We know that a truck change would be over the top but so is the cost of wheels/ tires these days. Tell us what you think! What would you do?

I always told my wife that when we needed new tires, we needed to trade the truck in for a new one with new tires. She’s caught on, so now I just keep buying tires. You have a great truck, buy tires and wheels.

I think I would get the F450. I like the wide spaced front wheel track for sharper turning, and the beefier suspension, axles etc that make it more capable. They are both rated as 14000gvwr for more favorable insurance, registration(non commercial), but like you said the Ram only has a higher payload because it has lighter weight components/curb weight. I would choose the truck with heavier running gear and less (on paper) legal payload.

Long time 450 owner.... 19.5 inch wheels typically put you at commercial tire dealers, many shops can't deal with them. Could be a factor for you. IMO you have a great setup with current Ram, I would not decrease payload. As previously mentioned, let your exhaust brake do your heavy lifting. Good luck with your decisions.

I’ve had all three and liked them all. Currently, loving 2020 f450. Don’t underestimate the value of the wide rake front end on the 450 - simply a game changer on the manoeuvrability side of things and separates it from all trucks including the 350 in my opinion providing payload isn’t an issue!

Hope to see you out on the road sometime, I’m in colorado also. I went with the F450 vs the F350 to haul my Arctic Fox 1140. These arctic fox campers are very well build but heavy! Deciding factor was just looking at components side to side on both trucks and the F450 is way more stout. Bigger brakes, axle capacity, beefier frame and of course the wide track front axle that makes it look just absolutely mean. Suspension all I added were Torklift upper stable loads & a set of timbrens. Handles perfect over anywhere I’ve ever taken it.

I have the same 2018 3500 same color. Put on the Torque Lift fast guns for tiedowns airbags with the remote I can adjust from upfront while driving took the stock tires off at about 18,000 and put Goodyear KO twos still quiet after 10,000 miles plenty of traction. That’s what a lot of the overland People use on their jeeps. Also put a Helwig stabilizer bar $400 makes a big difference going into the corners Add the 975 model. Finally sold it. It became a pain in the rear trying to get it on straight, taking off the tailgate. It was fine once it was on.

I bought a 2022 Ram, 3500 limited, I over paid because of chip shortage. I was looking at the 450 but the payload is simply not as close as it seems. I also have a lance truck camper 2005, (981) which is about 4500 everything in it. HOWEVER, it's not impossible to go up to nearly 2 and half ton (5000 pounds). . I can't compare the two and I hope I didn't buy the wrong truck. My 2006 Ford F 350 Diesel is currently for sale, for 27 thousand, with 22 thousand miles. Sharpest dually I ever seen. Fixing to upgrade the camper it's also for sale for 19 hundred.

    Hi Todd-
Great video. We speak the same language.
I went through this same process when considering a new Lance truck camper.
The F350 dually has the higher payload capacity but the F450 has the big brakes and wheels and wide track front end with that awesome turning radius.
In the end, we went with a F250 Platinum and a Lance travel trailer. It just made sense for our needs. Our Lance 1985 is on order and due any week now. (Same trailer as your friends the McCormicks from TWD).
Having said all this….if I ever upgrade to a larger trailer or 5th wheel.
I would absolutely get the F450.
Yes for the brakes and turning radius.
But let’s be honest, it is THE most sexy and badass truck available.

To start off with I am a little disappointed that your partner in crime wasn’t with you in your video. You all do such a great job on your videos working together. Also I hope you haven’t forgot about the muffler addition on the generator. Did it make it any quieter?
Now to the trucks. In my opinion you should hang on to what you have. It looks awesome under that 975. The Cummins engine I think is the best one out there. The Ultimate truck in my opinion would be a Cummins diesel engine hooked up to an Allison transmission. I am a Ford man and own two, a 1985 F250 6.9 diesel and a 2004 F350 6.0 diesel. I love my old Ford because the engine is easy to work on. The other doesn’t have the payload capacity for my 1172, so I am having to get another truck that will handle it. I am around 2,000 lbs overweight. I have been doing extensive research on what to get for my overweight problem and am going with a Chevy 5500HD for these reasons.
Ford and Dodge and probably Chevy pickups if you have to do any major engine work, you have to pull the cabs of the chassis.
All of the pickups most everyone is having to do some modifications to the suspension system to carry the truck campers and they are also having to worry about being close to the payload capacity.
With a pickup bed you loose extra storage that you can achieve having your camper on a flatbed.
The 4x4 drive transfer is gear driven instead of chain.

    • @RunawayRoses
      @RunawayRoses  3 роки тому

Hi John Harley, Wow 2,000 lbs overweight is a lot but a Chevy 5500HD would definitely do the job. I have looked at the Ram 4500 & 5500's but I have a height restriction with having a 12' tall garage door. The ones I measured would be too tall by the time I add a flatbed and camper from what I can tell. Would love to have one though and the extra storage would be great. Thanks for watching ~ Todd

Truck Campers may be the perfect use case for medium duty trucks like the Chevrolet 4500-6500 series. It has high load capacity and some trailer capability as well. It does use a derated Duramax as it is designed for commercial use so it will last forever. They can order it set up for what you want to do with it, i.e. weight of your camper on the truck along with the tow bar and the max weight trailer you'd want to tow. Not sure what bed and tow bar options you might have with it though. Hope you are able to get better tires, bulging is a sign of poor tire but also over loaded tire. Glad you discovered that problem before it became more dangerous.

Howdy! We have a 2019 Ram dually with Super Springs and a 2021 Lance 1172. The truck does great. However, I’m a little Leary of our stock Nexen tires after seeing the trouble you’ve had with yours. I’ve been researching which tires to upgrade with too. It’s just like the great truck debate, one guy says this and the other guy says that. When I was considering trucks I talked to several mechanics and asked them which diesel dually truck they would buy and they all said either a Dodge Ram or a Chevy/ GMC Duramax. They said Ford still has some problems with their engines so I went with Ram because the Chevy wouldn’t fit in our garage 😀. I suggest talking to some of your local mechanic shops and see what they have to say. For whatever it’s worth, I’d just upgrade your tires and not spend anymore than that. Best of luck to ya. I’m looking forward to seeing what y’all end up doing, especially which tires you get.

Front axle weights 4800 lbs. Rear runs a little less than 8000 lbs. We run Michelin 245/70/19.5 on custom steel wheels all rated for 5000 per wheel. Caution, spare won't fit under the truck with sway bars and custom 20,000 lb hitch.
With 75,000 miles on the 19.5s with fully loaded camper plus hauling a 2500 lb utility trailer, very pleased with handling and tire life. Only negative with 19.5s is unloaded with the
minimum 75 psi per Michelin, it rides really ruff unloaded. Loaded it is great.

I’m a Ford guy and I change trucks every 4 years. Your right about the Jake brakes, they sucks compared to Ram Cummins but for quality of engine, I would say that power stroke is a way better motor, very good on fuel, quieter, and way more powerful. Dodge is a great truck but ´ think that Cummins is a little behind time. And as for the 450’s. Their mostly for pulling instead of hauling. There heavier built cuts them down weight capacity. I would recommend a 350 for a truck camper set up.

I have a f350 and lance 1181. I'd go with a F-550 If I was looking at new trucks. I think the 450 would haul your lance better than the 3500 but you would probably be over or very close to the 14k lbs with the 450. It's sort of a bummer that all 550s are de-tuned but if you're overweight and get in an accident your insurance may not cover it.

Having owned all 3 dully’s there is good and better for each. Here is my observation hauling a 38 foot DRV. 14,000 to16,500 pounds with a Gen X gooseneck. The F450’s steering is unreal..much better then the Ram 3500 or the Chevy 3500. The Ram and Chevy both have a better interior….more useful and more appealing. The engine brake on the Ram is a boat anchor…..it will slow your ass down period. F450 is ok and with the bigger front brakes does the job. I can’t comment on the Chevy….never had to use it. The Ram is louder, then the Chevy and the Ford seemed to be quieter. Power…..the F450 (2021) pulled better, again in my opinion. General over all quality goes to Ford. All had minor issues and some cheap parts but less (that broke) on the Ford, then Chevy, then Ram. If someone gave me a choice between the Power Stroke, Cummins or Duramax and said go drive 400,000 miles I would take the Cummins. I am a fan of the Allison Trans on the Chevy over the Ford 10 speed or the Ram. Looks…..Ford hands down. These are just my opinions, they are all good trucks….and beasts! Buy what you like but do yourself a favor and at least drive all 3.

Owned a 2017 Ram Mega cab limited with alt ride height loved that truck. It towed a 43’ fifth wheel with a 15k dry weight. I regretfully sold that truck in 2021 and just purchased a 2022 f450 limited. What I miss about the Ram is the exhaust brake, air bags and cummins engine. That combination is just too hard to beat coupled with the seats which extremely comfortable. Now what I disliked about the ram is the mirrors, limited capacity fuel tank, seat vibration, and the rough shifting of the Aisin tranny. The tranny would downshift sometimes and it felt as if I was hit from behind by another vehicle.
The f450 has all the creature comforts known man! The only thing I dislike about the f450 is the anemic exhaust brake and the loud mechanical radiator fan. The 10 speed tranny shifting is smooth as butter. All in all, can’t go wrong with either truck.

Hey Todd. From my years of being a fleet manager and also managing auto repair shops, Ford is not something i would ever recommend to anyone for anything. I have never seen anyone have a really great experience with Fords so called "better idea". For the application you have there, i would recommend looking at the Chevy Duramax. I have a really good friend that owns a repair facility that i used to manage for him. He owns a 2017 Silverado Duramax dually and pulls a huge 3 axle fifth wheel toy hauler. He used to be die hard Ford all the way. With the Allison trans and the Duramax engine, it is dollar for dollar the best pulling and economical and toughest truck out there for what you are doing. I pray you leave that Ford on the lot. Also, Michelin tires are the absolute best tire out there for light truck and heavy truck as well. Big $$ yes, but tires are not a place to try and save money on. Be blessed my friend. Ron and Cindy in Va. PS- stay stock on the wheel application as well, save yourself the money and put it into the Michelin tires.

The Toyo AT3's are really hard to find these days. I ended up buying the Coopers in a 255/80-17. They are awesome so far. I've been driving Dodge trucks since 1987. The only problem I have had was with my '01 Cummins truck that had the Brazilian #53 block in it. It cracked like the 100,000 other blocks did. Cummins was sued over this issue and should have probably sued the foundry that decided to make these blocks with thinner walls to "save weight". Anyway I have driven the other two diesel powered trucks as a freelance writer for automotive magazines and by far the Cummins is the superior engine. There aren't many people swapping out a Cummins to put in a Power Stroke or Duramax, but there are actual companies out there that build swap kits to swap the Cummins into a Ford... My next truck will be a Ram 4500 with a pickup bed on it.

@@RunawayRoses Good day Todd. I'm doing very well, just got done doing a cross country trip. You might also want to think about a carbon fiber air tank instead of a pump. Most 12 volt pumps are pretty slow and the carbon fiber tanks hold like 4500 psi! One small/medium tank can fill all your tires like now, no waiting for compressor. On a Ford, if you order your 350 with camper package you get upgrade rear springs and if you order it with snow plow prep you upgraded front springs. What you get is the 450 spring package on the 350. The 450 has a much heavier rear diff which reduces payload.

The wide track front on the 450 is a game changer. Also, the 350 dually and 450 have the same rear suspension. They derated the 450’s payload to keep it in a certain class after the heavier axle and other heavier duty components (gvwr limit). So, legally you can haul less, in actuality you can haul the same as a 350/3500, maybe even slightly more. I’d just go with the f450 and see if they can move the truck to the next class up and give you the gvwr full rating that the components can handle.

Hey Rabbi, I can't think of anything specifically as a Lance issue. I would just say to check the roof really well for leaks or damage. Also bring a flashlight and open all the cabinets and look in the corners for signs of any water damage. Do the same checking the floor and look from underneath if you can. Check the tires and their age. The week and year they were made should be stamped on the tires. If your not sure just consider you may want to replace them right away to be safe. Try all the systems to make sure they work. Check the age of the batteries. Check the exterior walls to make sure there is no delamination. If it has slides check their seals, run them in and out make sure it sits flush to the wall when it's in for travel. Take your time and don't be in a rush. I hope that helps. I had 19.5 tires on my Ram 3500 SRW....never again, too stiff. Plus the suspension really isn't designed to handle the added wheel mass. The Ford needs the bigger brakes to handle those heavy tires. You will have to visit only truck tire shops, no one else handles 19.5s. Very limited tire selection available also. I would look at Toyo M-55 tires if you want a 17" commercial tire.
Also, not that you will haul fast with the Lance, but 245/70R19.5 commercial tires are rated at 85 mph, any larger size tires and they go down to 75 mph.
