Of all the people doing Camper videos, no one gets into the more technical details like you. Weights being really important. Your loaded center of gravity is behind the rear axle for both campers, with the Lance taking 600 lbs off the front end. The only way to find the real C of G is to weigh it before and after to find the weight shift. Perhaps they put the C of G sticker in the same place for the base stripped down model and don't account for models with options like rear decks, rear awnings etc.
I just saw the guy in Baja who broke his Ram truck in half due to overloading a big heavy truck camper… Hopefully you are doing your math correctly and that expensive fix is not in the cards…😂
Congratulations again, and again, and again!?!? This makes 6 truck campers for you all, I've had 5. Wooed by the call of the slide-out? Whoo boy, you sure run through 'em!
I've had 4 truck campers including 2 crank down Skampers and two hard sides. When I retired I decided to trade for a 5th wheel and now we are on our 3rd one. I would like to go back to a truck camper but once you give a woman counter space and closet space it's a not no but hell no situation. I will continue my plight to return to truck camping as they offer the easiest travel. Too many people try to haul truck campers on a truck that is grossly overloaded. This video is an eye opener for some of those people
We have a Lance 2021, 1172 on a 2022, Ram 5500. I don’t talk much about our rig on social media but I’m a fan of y’all and since you have basically the same rig now I thought this might help you. I eliminated the black drop- down plastic housing for the utilities ( sewer, water drains, outside shower, cable tv etc), and rearranged all of those things to fit flush with the bottom of the camper and beyond the back of the bed. (Except for the outside shower, I eliminated that too. We never used it anyway). That allowed the camper to be loaded further forward which really helped the COG and ride stability. I put the spare tire on top of a hitch extension using a bracket by Stable Camper. It fits perfectly underneath the rear portion of the camper when it’s loaded on the truck. We also purchased aluminum truck boxes from Stable Camper and I’ll mount them in a few weeks after they are painted. I had to relocate the electrical and water inlets to accommodate the driver side box. My electrical feed wire came through that plastic utility box so all I did was cut it and dropped it down through a 1/4” aluminum plate that I installed as the new floor along with the city water and black tank flush inlets. I also had to plug off outside propane connector on the passenger side for that box. (Never used that either). We also bought Stable Camper’s camper tie down offset brackets. We test loaded the camper with the truck boxes set in place and they fit like a glove. They’re expensive but they look great and provide a lot of extra storage. There’s more I could say but this comment is already too long, ha. Congratulations and good luck
Hi Tiko, It sounds like you have an awesome setup and like you've done some cool mods to your camper. I can understand why you did the modifications to make it fit further up on the flatbed. Mine is sitting back about 4-5 from where our Bigfoot sat in the bed. I may have to think about doing the same in the future but for now I'll see how it goes. I did buy one of the tire mounts from Stablecamper but decided not to use if for now since I mounted the spare up against the headache rack. Every setup sure seems difference so I'll just have to see how it goes for now and most likely will be making a few changes of my own. Thanks for the great ideas and thanks for watching! ~ Todd
@@RunawayRoses Awesome- thank you very much. Just starting to do the homework on possibly ordering an F550 Flatbed. All the data helps. Much apprecaited! Thank you again for all the helpful videos.
Did you ever make a video about loading the Lance 1172 on the new flat bed? You mentioned in previous video that you needed to make some modifactions switching to flabed vs regular truck bed?
Todd, what is the payload capacity of your 4500 and how much variance was there between it and your actual weight. We!re thinking about the same combo of truck and camper, so that would be valuable information for me. Thanks!
Hi Geof, The trucks gvwr is 16,500 lbs. We are pretty much at that or above depending on how we are loaded. I would recommend a 5500 or F550 with a 19,000 gvwr. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!
We also have a Lance 1172 and I concur with your calculations. We have an F350 Dually 4 door. We spent 4 months last Winter touring the East coast and we had no issues whatsoever with weight.
We have been watching you all since you started on UA-cam. My wife told me that she thought Carla missed the Lance 975. We also have a 2020 1172 we bought new right when Covid hit. Boy has the price gone up. We also were almost 2,000 lbs overweight with our 2004 F350 so I ordered a Chevy 5500HD. Still waiting on it,471 days so far. When it gets here I’ll be putting on a flatbed also. Thanks for all your videos. Very informative.
Hi John, That sounds like you’re gonna have a great set up with your 1172 and your new Chevy 5500. I hope you get your new truck soon. Thanks for watching and safe travels!
Todd & Carla You guys crack me up. I just wrote you about two months ago to ask you why you guys decided to get rid of your Lance 975, Thinking that I might be interested in a Lance? and that you might know something I didn't know about Lance Truck Campers? You told me the short answer was You just liked Big Foot campers better after having one previously. Now you have bought the 1172 Flagship of Lance. After all your experience, you know I must ask why? I'm not saying it is wrong or there is anything wrong with what you have decided to do. To each is own, you know! Opinions are like A** holes everyone has got one. It would be Great to go over the pluses and minus of both campers according to yours and Carla perspective and opinion. I'm not into who is right or wrong, just what you're experience was, for you guys. Thanks a bunch.
Hi Patriot, We do love Bigfoot campers but our 10.4 was a little small with us and the dog. We did really love our last Lance so decided to go big and get the biggest one there made. We’re loving it so far. It is very heavy but the space is great. Thanks again for watching!
Congratulations on the Lance! Love those mountain graphics. We always loved your first Lance that you had. Very good informative video! Thank You for sharing
I got 16mpg with my 2015 Chevy 3500 HD 4wd gas engine with 4.10 gears. Northwestern Pennsylvania to Bristol Connecticut, mountains and all. I paid $3.42 a gallon for flex fuel gasoline and I could not be happier! I haul a Eaglecap 1165 on the truck and averaged 9 mpg from Florida to Pennsylvania this last spring with 65 gallons of fresh water.
That's quite a combination, but have you weighed your rig on a scale? I know those Eagle Caps are nice and real heavy, especially if you're carrying full water capacity.
Lol, “Real women marry drummers!!!” Love it. I guess this means Todd is a heckuva drummer!!! Always fun and informative to watch your videos. Hope to see ya’ll at a fall rally!
Nice job, it was good to get some ballpark figures and stuff cuz the wife and I was thinking about doing the same thing and I recommend doing 4500 to her. Just hard to find a slip in the beds on this Coast. That dealer that you was close to when you done the scale there in Duncan South Carolina down there in Greer they're supposed to be getting them in to start selling.
We like your new rig! We have a 2021 Lance 1172 we are thoroughly enjoying. It’s on a 2020 Ford F-350 crew cab Power Stroke 4x4 dually. We have a loaded camper minus an awning (it was ordered without it and we bought it off the lot). We weighed 13,600 lbs. However, we typically pack pretty light and take only what we need. I assuming your truck bed adds a considerable amount of weight? It’s really nice though! I’d love to own an F-450 or Ram 4500 but in Texas they put them in some kind of a commercial rating and it raises the insurance coverage quite a bit. Our truck is getting it done and we’re happy with it. We hope y’all have fun with the new rig!
Hi Doug, It sounds like you have a very nice setup. We’re looking forward to all the space in the 1172 compared to the other campers we’ve had. Yes I did have to pay extra and actually got a whole separate policy just for my truck being a 4500. It was like the insurance companies did not understand why I wanted a 4500 truck for personal use. I could make a whole separate video about that and maybe I should. Thanks for watching!
We already sold the Bigfoot. We would have to partially lift the camper to get to the spare tire. We would have to lift the camper anyway to Jack the truck up to change the tire. Thanks for watching!
Hi Todd & Carla, we are big fans of your channel, we watch all the time. Really like your Waynesville t-shirt. Watching your comparison video of the two truck campers. Are you selling the Northern Lite camper, we are interested in buying. Thanks.
As always, awesome info! Great job explaining everything. While we own a bumper pull RV, we still learn so much from your posts. We are on our 3rd RV in 5 years. We are struggling to keep up with you! 😀. Thanks again!
Hi Todd and Carla, Interesting stuff. We looked at getting a Lance 1172 but settled on the Lance 960. Better for winter camping which works for us. 😎 Those cat scales are interesting but we do not have them here in Québec, Canada. Instead we go to the government scales on weekends when they are not being used. We can still park on the scale and read our weight. No charge which again works well for us. Our rig is at 5700 KG as of today with a full water load.GVRW is 6351 KG (14,000 Lbs) So we are good for weight. Looking forward to more truck camper reviews. Keep up the great work. Steve and Marilyn
Hi Steve and Marilyn, It sounds like you have a nice truck and camper setup. Yes the scales are interesting. It would probably be best if we just stay off of them. Lol. Safe travels and thanks for watching!
Trying to keep up with your truck campers. So you are getting rid of the Bigfoot and going to another Lance? Curious as to what motivates you to change campers so quickly. I love your detail and have followed your suggestions for things like, swing out happy jack brackets and the supports under the mattress.
Great to see another video! Congratulations on your new camper! You had the Big Foot all polished up and you did all those upgrades!!! Someone is going to enjoy it for sure. What is the GVWR and axle ratings on your beautiful 4500? My 1996 Ram Scotty 25 foot motor home wirh the venerabke 5.9 was overweight was an. Easy 1000 pounds over gvwr when fully loaded and all tanks full with passengers etc. I still got 14 to 15 in summer and 12 to 13 winter. Loved that rig.
@@doodles2814 Thx. Yup, I have a Ford F450 Chassis + Cab + Aluminum Flatbed with a GVWR of 16,000. With 60 gallons of diesel I CAT scaled my truck and it weighs in at 9,600. My camper weighs in at around 5,000 + 1000 in gear so that puts me right around the limit. I should have gotten a F550 with higher Payload like your RAM 5500 19,000 GVWR.
@@avecruxspesunica2552 I know, those weights can creep up on you. We have a 2004 Ram 3500 Laramie diesel crew cab dually, but it didn't have near the capability to haul what we wanted at a GVWR of 11,500. So we've been looking for a reasonably priced 5500 or F550 and found a 2015 Ram 5500 Laramie diesel dually crew cab with a CM skirted flatbed, the new and newer ones (IF you can find them) are way overpriced. Now it's time to start shopping for the truck camper, and I know whichever one we settle on, I won't have any weight issues to worry about and can take what I carry what I want, especially water because we more fond of off grid camping. So far it appears to be down to BigFoot, Northern Lite, and Arctic Fox.
@@doodles2814 IMHO... I have a fairly new Host Camper but I now believe that an Arctic Fox has better quality and is a true 4 season camper. (Though Host camper has better Solar-Battery options) If prices should ever drop I will consider a used F550 or a Ram 5500.
@@avecruxspesunica2552 I love the Host Campers, especially the big 3-slide one, but that's also what I don't like about them. Our number one requirement is to be able to access the camper while on the road and that's impossible with the Host since slides have to be out. We think having no slides for less worry and maintenance and good accessibility. Would consider one slide, as long as you can access the interior while slide is in. After the slide requirement, we will focus on the amount of water it can carry and tank sizes for off grid camping. There are some really nice rigs out there, Host being one of them, but we find we like one thing about one brand, another thing with another brand, so we will have to settle on the one that best suits our preferred camping needs.
Great purchase on your Lance 1172. We ordered a 2022 Lance 1172 last October and are still waiting for delivery up to Canada. The new models look so much different with lots of improvements. 4 season is now standard. Apparently our camper was being built in July and whenever it gets delivered. We just have to wait. We traded our 2008 Lance 992 in on the new one.
Hi Paul, Congrats on the new camper. I hope you get it soon. I’m sure you’ll love it, We love you so far. Their so roomy with lots of nice features. Safe travels!
Hi guys and Gals Great to see you both I am a huge fan I have to say I've done this and think its great just to pack what you need make sure you have everything and what ever else you don't then it stores in the back seat other than that its pretty much your own thing Best advice I was given is Better to have it and need it than to need it and not have it
I really enjoy your attention to details. I went through weighing my rig the same way. I’m still looking for a chassis/flatbed 4500-5500. Nothing came up yet that’s a great deal. Maybe next year. I really enjoy y’all’s channel
F350/ Ram 3500 has more payload than a F450/Ram4500. Both though have a GVWR of 14000 lbs. So you are overweight at 15,900 dead empty. You may have more payload since you have a chassis cab than a normal Ram 4500, but I don’t think that changes the GVWR for the model of truck. Congrats on your new camper.
I'm so happy that the Ram 4500 flatbed design is working that well for you. no more having to worry about being too heavy. how well does it work out to haul your small ATV trailer with it?
Great job on the video! Very useful information. I wonder how many rig (RV's) are running the roads and have never visited a cat scale. We weighted ours the other day, we have little room to spare, but it was very telling. Our truck Ram 3500 SRW handled it like a champ and we were getting a solid 13 mpg. I can see a Ram 4500 in the future and you have sold me on the flat bed. Keep on Trucking!
Hey Glenn, Good to hear from you. Yes the scales are very telling and a little scary after you find out how much the whole rig weighs. Our new camper is very heavy now I wish I had bought a 5500 but my 4500 handles it just fine. I do love having a flatbed for all the extra storage but it’s also great when you have to move some furniture or something large there’s plenty a room. Take care and safe travels!
I love you guys!!!! You have a great channel. I thought you loved the Big Foot are you selling it? Why did you go with the Lance when you already had one Safe travels

The 19.5 wheels and tires on the 4500 chassis make the difference is safety.
The gvwr on my truck is 16,500 lbs. We’re getting close that’s for sure. Thanks for watching!
I'm so happy that the Ram 4500 flatbed design is working that well for you. no more having to worry about being too heavy. how well does it work out to haul your small ATV trailer with it?
He's actually very close to being over weight. Depending on water and personal belongings he pushing it.
Can you carry 10k lbs?
Its not really the best idea to be carrying a 8ft truck camper on a 6 ft bed.
The bed length on that flatbed is 9’4”. Thanks for watching!
Is your Bigfoot for sale?
