Christopher Marlowe, also known as Kit Marlowe (baptised 26 February 1564 - 30 May 1593), was an English playwright, poet and translator of the Elizabethan era.
Marlowe was the foremost Elizabethan tragedian of his day.
He greatly influenced William Shakespeare, who was born in the same year as Marlowe and who rose to become the pre-eminent Elizabethan playwright after Marlowe's mysterious early death.
Marlowe's plays are known for the use of blank verse and their overreaching protagonists.
A warrant was issued for Marlowe's arrest on 18 May 1593.
No reason was given for it, though it was thought to be connected to allegations of blasphemy-a manuscript believed to have been written by Marlowe was said to contain "vile heretical conceipts".
On 20 May, he was brought to the court to attend upon the Privy Council for questioning.
There is no record of their having met that day, however, and he was commanded to attend upon them each day thereafter until "licensed to the contrary".
Ten days later, he was stabbed to death by Ingram Frizer.
Whether or not the stabbing was connected to his arrest remains unknown.
LOVE JOSEPH FIENNES AND RUPERT EVERETT WITH ALL MY HEART AND ALWAYS WILL
Christopher "Kit" Marlowe played by Rupert Everett
I just realized the movie completely ignores the fact that Shakespeare based Romeo and Juliet on the "Story of Two Noble Lovers" by Luigi da Porto.... here they make it seem like he had to think out the story, and come up with the names - while da Porto already had all of that in place....
The whole movie has pretty much nothing to do with the actual history of Shakespeare's life or his writing, tbh. The two main plots are him writing the plot of Romeo & Juliet (which he didn't, as you point out) and his romance with Lady Viola, a character and relationship completely invented for the movie. That's not to say people can't enjoy this movie, you just have to view it as the total fiction it is.
Shakespeare used many sources for his stories. The primary source for Romeo and Juliet is considered by Shakespearean scholars to be Arthur Brooke. Brooke was an Englishman.
@@Luanna801 He did create the plot.
@@harveyepstein6265 Brooke did not create the story. It's well-known and long since been established that Luigi da Porto's novella "Novella novamente ritrovata" is the specific origin of Romeo and Juliet's story.

Shakespeare's primary source for Romeo and Juliet was a poem by Arthur Brooke called The Tragicall Historye of Romeus and Iuliet, written in 1562. So no, Marlowe didn't ad lib the idea.
only it was Luigi da Porto first. An Italian. But no, there was certainly no Romeo and Ethel, and no Marlowe involved.
@@helenandhercoffee No, it was Arthur Brooke.
@@harveyepstein6265 No, it really was Luigi da Porto. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luigi_Da_Porto
This is an interesting fact! Also, I think Marlowe was definitely involved as inspiration for Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet". Read Marlowe's "Hero and Leander" and you'll hear how Shakespeare echoed the young, first-time lovers (treated both with sympathy and slight mockery by M. and S. respectively over how intense the characters feel first love), separated by the sea of which "in view and opposite two cities stood", who are destroyed by the gods/fate/destiny. I read the poem and absolutely loved all the parallels! Like S. read it and was inspired to create his own version.
Maravilhoso
was prince charming voice actor Christopher Marlowe?
Hello from the distant future!
Yes. Yes it was. Rupert Everett. Long a very beautiful man, with a very sexy voice... also a gifted actor, author, and ultimately director. Look him up 🙂
Christopher Marlowe is the man many believe wrote the main body of Shakespeare's works.
This scene, although not historically accurate, was written in precisely to nake fun of this well-known fact. Many people have pretty defensible theories that CM wrote Shakepeare's plays. So I absolutely loved when the movie just inserted this in. Very well writte. Shakespeare trivia.
Shakespeare is not good enough to be Marlowe.
He looks to old to be Marlowe, but indeed Marlowe was usually drunk 🍸and would be the leading figure of English Renaissance Lit had he survived the tavern brawl.
