Oh, man. The way she delivers those lines at 1:49 always makes me reflect. Deep resolve, profound pride, a bit of regret, and an unrelenting burden are all there at once! Brilliant. For a brief moment, it makes me imagine that I could understand the depths of Queen Elizabeth I's challenges. Stellar acting. One of my favorites moments in film.
"you seem an eager boy" nice reference to John Webster, the next generation play writer with a lot of death and dying in his works, such as the Duchess of Malfi.
0:53 - It is a testament to what an epic actress Judi Dench is the magnificent elegance with which she made her appearance. Every head bowed and every knee bent when they realized the Queen herself was there. She looked every square inch the dignified grace and authority of Elizabeth herself and commanded the poise and presence of that legendary English monarch masterfully. Say what you will. Judi Dench WAS Queen Elizabeth I in this performance. Brilliantly done!
Mr. Tilney: (Pointing at Viola) That woman, is a woman!(Ralph playing the part of the Nurse takes offense to protect Viola) Ned: (Quickly picking up on it) What?! A woman?! (Gestures to Ralph) You mean that goat?! That was the funniest part of the movie for me.
The quote “ A woman in a Men’s profession “ refers to the historical fact that Henry VIII murdered and divorced so many of his wives because they did not provided him with a male heir. He never wanted his daughter, Elizabeth, to become queen. Henri VIII thought that only a strong King would keep his kingdom together. Little he knew that Elizabeth would become the greatest English monarch.
Indeed, Belmont79!! What a supreme irony that Anne Boleyn would give birth to such a powerful monarch! Personally I think Henry Vlll was a failure as a King, a despot. Queen Elizabeth was such a better monarch.
@@bobby70077 Edward, from most contemporary accounts and the historical record, had everything it takes to be a great monarch.. He was studious, engaged in political theory from a young age, and he was pious, but not to a fault.. He was a kind and generous person, and had a loving relationship with his family, especially his much older sisters.. No guarantees, of course, but it would be interesting if history changed and he lived to sit on the throne..
some have complained that Judi Dench should not have gotten the Best Supporting Oscar that year because she was in the film for under 10 minutes (I think). I say that her delivery of those two lines deserved the award. She conveyed the entire history of Elizabeth's life and reign up to that point in those few words. Amazing.
I am now reasonably sure Judi Dench's version of Elizabeth I and Maggie Smith's Dowager Countess must be distantly related through time. Its the only way to explain such epic levels of bad-assery.
Leland Wood A lot of people talk about how beautiful Cate Blanchett was as Elizabeth I (and she certainly was and nonetheless made a great performance). But at the same time, Judi Dench as Elizabeth I in general was a bit more accurate than Blanchett's portrayal.
1:50 always stuck with me. At that moment, Queen Elizabeth wasn’t her title, she was a fellow woman standing in solidarity with another woman; a shared struggle. I would imagine Judi Dench herself knows about that too.
You can see her eyes change ever so slightly when wanting "Kent" to bow, not curtsy. Warning with the flash of her eyes not to waste the moment she is giving her.
Jim Carter, who played the Nurse in the play, is in real life married to Imelda Staunton, who in the movie was Viola's nurse. And between them they have had so many wonderful roles in other shows.
I love that shout that Judy Dench does screaming Mr. Tidty and everyone looks up and its the Queen Elizabeth. Shakespeare In Love was brilliant I have this on DVD. The whole cast was amazing in this**** Bringing up 12th Night Romeo And Juliet .
Judy Dench is drenched in glory and greatness in this scene, majestic as this scene is and amazingly wonderful and hauntingly accurate as her performance in this scene was, as she NAILED IT PERFECTLY, BEAUTIFULLY AND SEAMLESSLY. The real Queen Elizabeth would have been deeply honored, and flattered. Great job!
I thought Geoffrey Rush and Tom Wilkinson owned the movie, as did Colin Firth, Imelda Staunton, Rupert Everett, Ben Affleck... Hell, it was a great ensemble!
Judy Dench was in roughly 8 minutes in this movie. And she OWNED the entire movie within those 8 minutes. She played the mother of all bitches (and kindred spirits) in it :)
Length of time on screen is not what makes a role significant, it's the power of the performance. And she OWNED this movie, despite being on-screen for less than 10 mins. Yes she should've won an Oscar for Mrs. Brown and Iris as well, but her Oscar for this role was definitely deserved. And I also find it hilarious that you know her inner feelings and know that she was upset at winning an Oscar--dude, just be quiet LOL
Judi Dench did such a good job in this movie she won the Academy Award for Best Actress which she did an excellent job of the role of Elizabeth in this movie. Love her performance.
Elizabeth I, introduced what we now know as ‘free speech’. Her reasoning was how do you know what people really think if they aren’t allowed to speak freely. It led to many great writings, plays, literature, and the concept of what we call today news and media.
Glad you agree. Yah Dench is realy upset beacause she dident want this to be the movie she would be rememberd for, she wanted to win in a movie where she was important and significant(and in it for more then 6 minutes)
Crazy when you think about how Queen Elizabeth reigned during Shakespeare’s lifetime and she only passed away a few weeks ago. Really puts the sheer length of her reign into perspective
Wow! I didn’t know that. I haven’t seen “ Shakespeare “ - was Gwenyth really that good in this? I have to see this because to beat Cate Blanchett it had to be a great effort.
In hindsight, we all know why Gwyneth won the Oscar. With all due respect to her performance here, which is very decent by any standard, her win at the Oscars was almost certainly politically engineered. Cate Blanchett is one of the most prolific and talented actresses of all time, and certainly the best of her generation. If she had won, which she should have in terms of artistic quality, the same character, Queen Elizabeth I, would have been portrayed in two Oscar-winning performances in the same year, which would have been quite remarkable (Marlon Brando and Robert De Niro won Oscars for their portrayal of Vito Corleone in two different editions). But, as Cate once famously said to Charlie Rose, this defeat and frustration propelled her to keep going and seek to improve herself, since success and complacency only cause stagnation, but in her case her persistence in trying to avenge herself of this unmerited defeat led to her subsequent magnificent performances (of which there have been many indeed) which made her into the phenomenal actress that she is today. If necessity is the father of success, failure must be its mother.
She has deserved 3 oscars in her life, but this was not one of them! Every other nominee that year deserved it more then her. If you watch her award video you can tell she is realy upset, and shocked that she won.
As a "fan" of English history, I love this movie. It paints a beautiful and accurate portrait of late Tudor England. And I love Judi Dench as Queen Elizabeth....but I can't exactly see Elizabeth as sympathetic...not after all the Catholics she had hanged and beheaded.

"What?A woman?You mean that goat?"
the dude in the lady costume felt insulted
The way she slightly squints her eyes at 1:33 when Viola doesn’t bow properly. Masterful.
