Hello, it's possible to extend the diagram out to the side, if you add two smaller circles to the outside of the diagram at the same height as the Witch and link with lines to the 1st Actor, 1st Actress, Pantalone & the Doctor. The young lovers (2nd Actor & 2nd Actress) are usually the children of the 1st Actor, 1st Actress, Pantalone or the Doctor. Because of their youth they sit outside the social hierarchy. Apologies for that omission from the diagram. Thank-you for your comment.
I've been laughing and enjoying this video tremendously. I'm an actor and I would LOVE to do a workshop on this, especially with a woman as knowledgable and amazing as Didi Hopkins. What a beautiful, awesome thing! I love how physical Commedia is. I would LOVE to watch this sort of theatre.
well said. sometimes a short video like this can be much more informative and educational than a long documentary. there are way too many documentaries out there that either have nothing to teach you or contain misleading and manipulative information similar to what you see on ads
These video's have helped me so much! I am studying Commedia right now in school and have been struggling with the characters, but now feel much more comfortable with them! They all make much more sense now. When I was first explained it all, the characters were so much to take in. Thanks again! (I'm playing one of the young lovers!)
I am watching this video because I became really interested in Commedia dell'Arte after having watched the trailer of Genshin Impact that introduces its 12 Harbingers, which are based on these characters. I never knew about these before, and I am glad to know more! Thank you so much for putting this video together. Know that it is still appreciated 11 years later today.
Years ago I unexpectedly came upon a Commedia dell'Arte production in a small square in Venice. Once I was given the premise of the action by an English-speaking Venetian seated nearby, I laughed along with everyone else at the hilarious antics of the actors. How lucky can one be, eh!
HOW CAN THEY DO THIS WITH A STRAIGHT FACE?? I know training like this gives rise to great interpretations and characters but still watching it at work is so strange.. xD
Welcome to the arts, dear! We spend a lot of time making fools of ourselves so we can hopefully make something worth experiencing later. (plus it desensitizes us to making fools of ourselves unintentionally)
When the focus is on the artuculation of a character or role, the attention is so involved with the activity, the thought of silliness or of being concerned about how one appears to others has no room to exist...
Wow. Such an informative and helpful video with getting to grips with the characters of Commedia dell'arte. A lot of info on the internet is ill-explained and contradictive to other sources, but this is great and Didi Hopkins is an undoubtable reliable source of knowledge on Commedia.
Yes I wonder if it wasn't part of the esoteric understanding of the theatre at the time... The characters certainly work well with the planetary and other archetypal correspondences of the Sephirot
This is so interesting for me as a student of western Kabbalah - it seem to me that the diagram of the tree of life is used arbitrarily as a scheme to define the different energies/characters - interestingly enough - a scheme of 11 spheres is serving the characters - the diagram in its origin is 10 spheres where the 11th one is hidden. - in tantric numerology there are 11 archetypes which probably match betters - these 11 ‘faces’
Nothing I ever learned at school ever stuck with me as much as commedia did. Playing Brighella was the most I ever enjoyed acting. I have to find myself an improv group asap.
@@Sarah-ot6ls oh so you asked in real life? You went to this persons house and asked him to comment this exact thing on this exact UA-cam video? Seems unlikely...
"An exaggerated mirror of society" that's when it all made sense. This play seems very disturbing nonetheless, but perhaps that's because it reflects on us humans, and shows the foolishness of our actions.
Professor Twilley down at the Arlen Learning Annex was particularly impressed with my character Tartuffe the Spry Wonder Dog. My father was not amused by my performance, however. All he had to say was, "That boy ain't right."
The two lovers (2nd actor + actress) were mentioned in the video, but don't feature in the final diagram. Do the lines show who can interact with who? I find these aspects of the diagram confusing, but apart from that I find this video very interesting.
Hi! First, I must congratulate the team of young actors and their teachers!! Second, I have a question... is there really a difference between Magnifico and Pantalone? Sometimes I find that they are usually referred as the same character.
Enrique Nue Dear Sir, in Italian the word magnifico is equivalent to being magnificent in what you do. Normally it was the respectful way of calling a Notary Public who knew all the secrets of each family's possessions and contracts, therefore highly feared and respected. This attitude gave the magnifico a sense of grandeure and bombast. Now the Pantalone mask could be such a larger than life loud and magnificent character or indeed a decrepit old man who is still interested in sex but is myopic, forgetful and shuffles along with a squeeky voice and no dignity. In both cases he is a stingy and greedy merchant.
Manifico - seems to be about power but his power is only as strong as the demos who allow him to have it and Pantalone is about money and of course this creates his need
that diagram is the Tree of Life in Kabbalah, which is a map of occult energies and archetypes used in ceremonial magick. it's an interesting rabbit hole to research
been out of school for many years and just watching this for fun cuz I find it interesting. but I've alway been a nerd for this kind of thing, even in school.
Are the characters' positions on the diagram intended to correspond to the elements of the original 'Tree of Life' diagram? Or did the designer just like the shape and repurpose it?
National Theatre why did you use the Kabbala diagram for this? I d love to know why and if you are associating that with the Commedia or if not why it is not acknowledged that that is the Kabbala diagram
Here’s the summary for people having to do this for homework just so u can be lazy: Magnifico- like an eagle, looks down on everything, leader of the city, most powerful man Zanni- leading with nose, peasant, pigeon noises, extremely curious + enthusiastic Pantalone (Sanya)- old man, the merchant, mean, has a lot of needs The Doctor- old man, man of learning but understands nothing, hardly contains himself Brighella- cunning, brain character, master or servants, proud of uniform, welcomes guests Harlenquino- stupid, body character, intuitive and happy go lucky, thinks he’s gorgeous/kinda vain, doesn’t know the difference between right and wrong, lives in the moment, acrobatic and cheeky :)

Hi David
My school is starting a Commedia dell'Arte class, so this was extremely useful for really understanding what it's all about.
You are lucky your school is exposing you to this old form of theater!
Thanks National Theatre, great great help for studying Commedia! Didi Hopkins is a great educator, I hope to work one day with this lady.
I honestly love this so much. The comment section has got to take themselves less seriously.
I gotta ask who chose the " Tree of Life" to descibe a diagram of the archtypes in this form of theater....
right? very interesting, though.
