When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? (stylized in all caps) is the debut studio album by American singer and songwriter Billie Eilish. It was released on March 29, 2019, by Darkroom and Interscope Records in the US and Polydor Records in the UK. Eilish, aged 17 at the time of release, largely wrote the album with her brother Finneas O'Connell, who produced it at his small bedroom studio in Highland Park, Los Angeles. A Target exclusive green glow in the dark vinyl was released as well.
If there’s such a thing as someone truly being “born to do something” …Billie and finneas were 10000% born to make music. And it’s such a blessing that they had the privilege and support from their parents to make their dreams come true unlike so many people who have the chops but just never get the chance

“listen before i go, i love you, goodbye” what an insanely brilliant way to close the album
I love how much you include Finneas when discussing Billie's music because he's such an integral part of it all, and he is severely underrated and not recognised nearly enough
This album is such a time stamp in history. I will always remember it.

Billie wrote and composed that song by herself at only 15-16 💔💔 she also wrote only by herself an unreleased song “6.18.18” about her friend death (xxx tentacion ) … im still crying when I hear that song … Billie is magic .. her intimate but so expressive delivery .. my god .. chills every time

"I love you" is one of the most powerful Billie's songs, and it is definitely my fav song of all her discography. Every time I listen to it, gives me shivers and feels like the first time I listened to it. The best song of this album
I agree , it's pure emotional
hands down
Its honestly wild that so many people seem to think Finneas is holding Billie back as an artist, if anything his production style is one of the most interesting parts of her sound.
Its so minimal and never competes too much with her voice, he seems really in tune with her progression and how she's maturing musically, I love what they did with her second album in particular.
Great to see you both liked it, one of the best pop albums of the 2010s imo.
yeah his production is amazing. I produce music and I wish I had half the talent this guy has for producing.
to be fair his production has become quite stale since her second album, I think that that's when people began saying this.
See my problem is I don't really see Billie growing musically from Happier Than Ever if she continues to work with Finneas. I want to see them both go off and pursue other projects with different collaborators. Plus Finneas' is a great producer but his style has become quite stale in recent years. Plus his solo album kinda blows so that might have something to do with the fact that people want to see the two of separated.
@@theboulderboulded5776exactly this is what i think
@@theboulderboulded5776 I mean it might be stale in that HTE wasn't as experimental as their first album, but the production was so smooth, it felt so good in my ear. However, I don't really like whatever mic they were using or how her voice sounded sometimes (not her voice itself, just the way it comes through the mic), but I'm guessing it's because they have to turn the volume up a little because she sings so delicately sometimes. But other than that, I think it sounded so good and mature. I do think bringing in someone occasionally to work in collaboration with Finneas on production could bring back some more experimentation that the first album had, but I think his production style is too intertwined with her sound and identity for her to completely separate from him.
You guys HAVE to do "Happier Than Ever" now!!! The progression is INSANE and levels up everything you love about this album to new extents

@@ryansutton8056 It's art, not sports, so enough of your "ooooh, this one is better than that one" bitchin'. If you like WWAFAWDWG better, then good for you. It's all subjective. Lots of people, myself included, prefer HTE because it's more complex and we're not shallow little spunk trumpets still humming bad guy in the shower like we're stuck in 2019 and wishing Billie could be 17 years old forever.😉
such an insane debut album. my love for her is eternal.

also FINNEAS IS A F*CKING GENIUS. A TRUE MASTERMIND.
About "My Strange Addiction": "The Office" is really her strange addiction. She watched all episodes
like 10 times and said this gives her peace when she'e on tour. :)
Same. Lol
She said that she created this song based on some short musical pieces in the episode and wanted the song to sound like it was part of the episode.
Just a reminder… she won 5 Grammys for this album
Yet when she sent a demo of this album to a famous producer, he returned it back saying there is not a single hit song on it. That fool!
All 4 major ones - only woman who ever did this. Plus Finneas got one for production.

Honestly one of the best pop albums of the decade in my opinion. It's so unique in its themes and sounds, the production is tasteful, weird and catchy and it's a concept that is so well executed. The album is dark, sad, quirky, funny or just straight up terrifying at some parts. It's truly a body a work and the fact that this is billie's DEBUT album is so impressive
I get your sentiment completely and agree, I'd also consider Billie to be more alternative; Olivia Rodrigo may come to dominate the POP charts over Billie, but that is not Billie's lane, and I truly believe much of Billie's music will endure over time - seeing Billie sing Peggy Lee's Fever [July 27, 2022 at the Hollywood Bowl, SoCalLiveitLive channel - she also sings "Is That All There Is?" with Debby Harry of Blondie fame] or "Sally's Song" from the Nightmare Before Christmas [Nov. 1, 2021, VENOM channel youtube] - Billie is a phenomenon in my view.
@breadonbuddder5827just because she has a few songs that blur pop lines doesn't mean she isn't a pop artist
@breadonbuddder5827 "alternative" as a genre on it's own is not a genre and nobody will ever convince me otherwise. When people say "alternative", what does that mean? There's "alternative" pop, "alternative" rock, "alternative" r&b, "alternative" metal, it seems more like a catch all-term used for something that dabbles in a more eclectic range of soundscapes than the absolute most run-of-the-mill examples of the genre.
@breadonbuddder5827 It's alternative pop if we want to be more precise, which is still pop
She swept all 4 major Grammies with this album as the first and only woman ever. So it became extremely popular,
it's def. not "pop" in the sense of plastic pop of some other "artists".
this was the first record I fully listened all the way through and it changed everything for me
sameeee you just feel the lyrics in so many songs
me too!
oh my god same
My favorite thing about "All the Good Girls Go to Hell" is that she says "I cannot do this SNOWFLAKE" because she was crocheting a snowflake while singing and she forgot how to do it, so in the middle of a take, she said that lol. Also, she's a really huge Office fan. Theres a video of Riann Wilson giving her Office trivia questions somewhere on UA-cam lol.
In another song, a fire truck siren could be heard. They leave all environmental sounds in as is.
omg had no idea!!!
@@vp4744 given, "listen before I go" implies suicide and I think that the sirens might've been added at the end (as she has died, metaphorically) but idk I might be wrong
@@annamirosh2085 I was referring to "Your power", not "listen before I go".
@@vp4744 ohhhhh okok
One of my favorite albums of all time. The production from Finneas, the songwriting, the singing, it's all near immaculate. It is such a fresh pop sound especially at the time it came out and I'm glad it got the praise it did both critically and commercially. This brother and sister duo are something special
Well said
I started REALLY listening to this album after the craze cooled down a bit, and that's when I was floored by it. I can only see it aging well. and I got to see her live last year, their live performance takes the songs to another level.
I liked it fine at the time but in hindsight this album is insanely underrated. For how popular she was in 2019 it's honestly surprising how quickly people seemingly moved on from this album.
it’s not underrated at all lol. the album is and has basically always been favorably reviewed/highly-favored among critics. Even fantano said that he thought this album caught his attention more than her sophomore record. I do understand what you mean but people always go nuts at her concerts when she plays these songs & the songs from her EP
@@logan-pe4rmI think what he means is that for as big as this album was, it’s crazy how nobody ever really talks about it and it doesn’t really hold that “classic” status it maybe should. Perhaps, with some time. It’s only 4 years old after all
@@logan-pe4rmalso side note: her second album was oddly overlooked at the time and didn’t get a lot of attention. My reason is that Olivia Rodrigo had just broke out at the time and kinda replaced Billie as the new “it girl” for that time
It received 6 grammys

God, I watched this without remembering how much "When The Party's Over" makes me cry. Oh my god that song.
Saw Billie at Osheaga music festival this year with my girlfriend and honestly… I was a huge fan before and now I’m an even bigger fan. Her albums are just banger after banger and she’s an amazing performer.
Funny how your dad talked about how crazy it would be to be their parents and listen to a master piece made by them and in her doc there's a scene that shows both of them in Billie's room writing I love you very causally and then they both sing it to her parents like its nothing and we can see the how extraordinary all this is. Is so amazing. I cant believe it you both haven't seen her doc cause you'll love it it show so much about the making of this album. just one of the most amazing things you'll see. There's one catch tho you'll both be hardcore fans after that (:
“all the good girls go to hell” is such a banger. My favorite Billie song tbh.
The bassline makes me want to get up and dance. Like, that was a Tame Impala-level Bassline
and the music video goes insanely hard too
One of my favorite pop albums of the last decade. Billie kills it on this one, and the production is just wild.
This is one of few albums that I consider perfect. Like the same level of perfect as R.A.M., Phineas' mixing is so professional and clean for a bedroom album.

It’s so crazy you guys enjoyed “I love you” and “listen before you go” those were my top 2 as well.
your dad probably recognises “when we all fall asleep where do we go” because the melody is similar to the melody of ‘people are strange” by the doors (my own father pointed this out to me whilst listening to it in the car)
I saw her live for the first time last February. I’m an older dude and I’m a billie superfan. I waited in the freezing cold for 18 hours to be front row. I was not disappointed. I was barricade and Billie was only feet away from me multiple times. She is a great performer. Keep in mind there’s only 3 people on stage. Finneas doing the keyboards, guitar and all that. And her drummer Andrew Marshall. And then there’s Billie..being a master of the ceremony.
I’m going to see her AGAIN in 10 days at music midtown in ATL.
as someone who's favorite billie song is i love you, this made me so happy. Super underrated mesmerizing heartbreaking lullaby-esque song
need to see him react to her debut ep “don’t smile at me” given how young both her and finneas were when they made it and how incredible it is
28:00 i cried. i’ve listened to this song many, many times (trust me), and the song makes me cry often, but what got me this time was the simplicity of: a father and son respecting and recognising young female talent and strong lyrics
So many of her songs really show the Julie London influence. Just such a powerful but controlled voice with minimalist backing.
i’m in love with you moonriverinc7896
Billie did mention Julie London along with Peggy Lee and Frank Sinatra as influencers from that era.
My strange addiction is about the office, Billie is actually a huge fan of the show and has watched it alot of times. She actually did an interview with Rainn Wilson( Dwight) where he quizzed her about the show
Love how much your pops love the album, I had a long drive around October of 2019 and decided to give her music a chance, and boy I’m glad I did!! I listened to the whole album that drive and immediately fell in love with her music, ilomilo is my personal favorite, you guys gotta do Happier than ever it’s basically their KID A album, its experimental and PERFECT haha :)

This album definitely gave me more confidence that I could be an independent artist. Still working on it.
She deserved every Grammy she got for this album
Fun fact:
The beat drops of the chorus in bad guy are actually inspired by the traffic signal voice of Melbourne, Australia.
Edit : You referred to it on 8:55
Finneas and Billy performed I LOVE YOU on Saturday Night Live. It was incredible. It's a fan favourite performance on tour too because they are on a bed, suspended above the stage and a giant full moon rises behind them. Magical. Definitely worth watching. She wrote this song for Tentation XXX, a musician she befriended and fell in love with who was shot and murdered on the street. Billy often cried when she performed it in the years closer to when he was killed.
Loved this! I would definitely love to see you guys do Happier Than Ever soon!
Billie added some noises she recorded when she was at the dentist to make some of the noises in “you should see me in a crown” that your dad said gave him chills! she said she thought the noise was perfectly creepy for the track

This is such a masterpiece! Some insight: yes Finneas sings backing vocals on when the party is over. He just recently started to sing them at the shows as well, he did not use to. If you check out their show in Paris Rock en Seine you'll hear it. My strange addiction she incorparated these samples as she just looooves the office so much, there is a video of Rainn Wilson quizzing her on the Office. She was also on the office ladies podcast. For seeing even more how they recorded the album and some thoughts behind it i would recommend watchibg her documentary the world's a little blurry. It s so cool to see how they wrote and recorded this album in Finneas little bedroom, just sitting on a bed.
More than this. The backing song is based on the Michael Scarn Dance. If they didn't directly sample it, she recreated the song note for note
Ive seen Billie live twice and she literally can get everyone to jump to any song of hers, that's how good her performance is.
Damn this is such a great record. I remember the first time I heard it. I was walking a friend's dog and choosing what to listen to. there was a lot of new hype about Billie Eilish at the time so I thought I'd listen to her album to see what the fuss was about, I didn't expect to enjoy it. It floored me on first listen. She's one of my favourite artists of all time now

I love your commentary on this album. I like your format of your views/commentary after every song, and I was happy to see you both not just listening but also enjoying the songs. Billie and Finneas make such a wonderful team and they truly compliment each other musically. Plus, I love the close relationship they have.
I did hear them say in an interview that the knife (or sword) sound was derived from one day when they heard their Dad sharpening a knife in the kitchen and they thought it sounded so cool, (Which, it does!) so they wanted to use that sound in one of their songs. They're so exceptionally good at choosing sounds, words, etc, and knowing exactly where to put them. I'm amazed by them.

OMGGGGG MY FAVORITE ARTIST, ALBUM, PRODUCER AND REACTORS… here lies me
a little background on ilomilo, in case you may be unaware:
ilomilo is a cute little puzzle game from 2011, that billie had grown up playing.
it follows the story of ilo and milo, lovers constantly separated, and can’t seem to get in touch as much as they want to, or something like that (it’s been a little bit) the premise is to navigate through the levels to reunite ilo and milo temporarily, until eventually forever when you finish the game. throughout the stages in the different zones, you find pieces and put together letters the two sent to each other, that are very sad, which is what i think was the main idea for the song.
it’s a very cute and simple story, that i’ve always loved, having also grown up playing it myself.
the production on her song is very similar to the sound of the game’s ost, which is one of the best and most lighthearted yet emotional soundtracks for a game i’ve ever heard.
(also, in spotify, the little looped video that is in the background for the song has ilo and milo floating around in it)
to be honest i haven’t listened to this album since i was an edgy teenager. listening to it again vicariously through this video, i feel a whole lot less embarrassed of that fact
I've been waiting so long for a billie album and this video was incredible! I didn't expect them to be so passionate about it and it was really great seing that !
