Did he serve in the military? It might be so ingrained into him because of that, and also part of his online personality's gimmick. Like his brand is "standing upright with one hand holding the tray while eating with the other", and I'm glad it's working for him!
I'd definitely like to see more of these little recipe experiments, especially if it's stuff that soldiers would actually do. Military cuisine like that is super cool, when everything is miserable around them people still find a way to at least spice up their meals and have some fun. There's just something so beautifully human about that...ignoring all the death and stuff.
Well, sorry to say but this is DEFINITELY not stuff soldiers would do, i served in the IDF, no one ever has cooking pans, let alone burners when they're given these 'MRE's, there's pretty much never field kitchens either outside of actual war and big conflicts (which is not usually the case) heck, you're lucky if you get to wash your hands every time you eat these. Not to mention you'd probably not always will be given the time. The one thing people actually really do is the toilet paper grilling trick. Its really sad to hear Steve not say how sad these are like in his last review of our 'MRE'S, especially for hot weather when you're already drinking and sweating so much. Also the fact you already where sick of tuna back at base. Also how pathetic the mention of 'MRE's are pricy to make' when its the cheapest supermarket cans you can get in a supermarket, ducktaped into a cardboard box, and that's being said to soldiers that are ALL FORCED to serve 3 years, getting one third of MINIMAL wage if they're in combat roles, and a SIXTH of minimal wage in support and administrative. The contractors tho (those who stay past 3 years) get paid well. You are fed like cannon fodder, you are supplied like cannon fodder, you're treated like cannon fodder, you're paid like cannon fodder, you ARE cannon fodder, you have no choice about it, you're not even really allowed to really shoot in self defence and if you do, you'll definitely go to jail in 60-80% of the cases, and its all overall really depressing. lucky they at least don't often USE living soldiers for much and there weren't any actual wars for long, usually just aviation and tanks...
Similarly, people do some very bizarre but ingenious things with foods bought in prison commissary. I was party to the communal "gumbo" many a night in county and was wowed by the things a talented jailhouse chef can do with Ramen, summer sausage, cheetos etc and no heating methods aside from the hot water out of a sink.
@@HornyIndianMan Yeah it's crazy how well human ingenuity works in almost any situation, even with people who don't have any professional cooking experience.
You know, I started watching Steve's videos out of curiosity 4 years ago maybe sooner. Now every time a new video of his pops up I make it a thing and watch it on the big screen! It's always a pleasure to see what he reviews next! Alright, Nice! Let's put this on the TV!
These are used today by all combat units in the military during training and are most commonly served with simple white bread. Tier 1 units have American styled MRES for missions that are out of state. The absolute best sandwich was the tuna with beans and sauce on top with the peanuts for crunch and saltiness as especially towards the bottom of the can they are extremely salty. If no bread empty 1 can of tuna into half a can of corn with peanuts, next best thing. Also olives on the side are 10/10 and next time like the others said, fold 2 squares of tp and cover the can, let it burn for 20 min maybe more until it puts itself out.
@@HBC101TVStudios Production ceased because of very low demand, basically only the IDF were purchasing it and the producer was selling it at loss rates. After a price increase, the IDF stopped procuring it entirely. Essentially, combat rations are rarely required and rarely used due to the availability of field kitchens (which would usually drop a hot meal from fresh ingredients to where troops are stationed), and was more perishable compared to the rest of the ingredients. As an IAF reservist I've only eaten a combat ration once (in 3 years of service and 9 years of reserve service) in the shooting range during basic training (and only because it was off base, where we had a mess hall) and for us it was a nice change of pace compared to the same monotone food served in mess (especially what was endearingly called "choke cake"). During active combat there would also be donations from civilians of food and amenities to be delivered to the troops and often deployed in gathering areas for troops cycling out of combat.
Thank you Steve. I look forward to your UA-cam uploads more than anyone else's. I don't know why, but they keep me leveled and sane. The true Bob Ross of mre's. Please don't hesitate to continue.
@@RiotKurhein the levels of poisoning that everyday people are exposed to are shocking. Needless to say mre's are inherently healthier because the ingredient and nutrition facts are more accurate.
"True Bob Ross of MREs" is an excellent description of Steve. Kind of bummed me out after I watched and liked all of his videos, that I don't have any more to go through. He is one of my top 3 UA-camrs, my moment of Zen.
I like how Steve basically made prison food for lunch. Crushed up crackers, packed tuna, peanut "butter", some other random stuff - if he had just put it in a plastic bag with a little boiling water instead of pan-frying it would just be a spread instead of fishcakes. Good ingenuity there.
I left the IDF back in 2015. Glad to see our MREs kept the tradition of not changing since the fucking 60s. Also for the tuna burning - you need to take a couple sheets of TP and just lay them on the open can, so that the sheet is soaked in oil but the edges are still dry. You then light the edges and let the entire TP burn until the fire dies. If done correctly all the surface area should burn so when you take off the TP the entire top is almost fried to a golden brown color. I ate so much of that crap over 3 years I didn't touch canned tuna for a couple of years after.
Seeing Steve upload a new video always puts a smile on my face. Even if it’s just a box of canned goods, with a little imagination and know how, you got yourself a meal on the tray. Truly a spiritual successor to Bob Ross.
Everytime I get depressed or really annoyed with people, I watch Steve's videos and it makes me feel better. It's like magic you can't watch this and not smile. Thanks Steve!
Steve I'm really happy you tried out this MRE! i've been waiting for this video for years. as mentioned by others, the 'smoked tuna' comes out better with placing the toilet paper square on top, lets it cook better and turn into a "chicken" like taste, after about 15 minutes. Was always wishing the IDF would change the MRE into something fancier, because I remember we hated eating tuna in the field for 7 days in a row! Another cool trick was to put 3 smoked tunas close together, an open corn stacked on top; gave out an amazing cooked corn. had to work with what you had i guess ^^
The best way to remove the pit of olives if you are going to eventually cut/chop them up is to smash them under a sautee pan with a towel on top. It exposes the pits and makes them easy to remove and is so much faster than cutting them 1x1.
I make fish cakes all the time and love them. Love the genuine look of joy on your face for your first one. Thanks for posting these. My whole family likes watching them together. "Alright let's get this out onto a tray."
When he was preparing to eat breakfast I heard "halibut" every time he said halva. At first I was like, 2 types of fish? Alrighty then. But then he started calling it lightly sweetened. @@caseydarrah they are, but on passover the ashkenazi jews avoid eating flour AND legumes (which include the chickpeas and beans). Lmao
On the side it says: "מכיל פריטים לאוכלי קטניות" "Contains items for people who eat "kitniyot" Kitniyot are a category of foods which Sephardic tradition permits on Passover, whilst the Ashkenazi tradition prohibits. It's a disclaimer for Ashkenazim. Thanks for the epic videos Steve!
That tuna is like an edible version of an esbit stove. I could definitely cook on that.😂😂. And it’s more space and weight efficient than an esbit stove cause you can eat it when you are done cooking with it. Honestly surprised that it was never marketed to other militaries.
really enjoyed this ep, quite unlike your regular ones (I absolutely love all your work, mate) it was just that this one was so outside the box. your fishcakes looked awesome, well done!
Those improvised fishcakes looked pretty good. I wonder if the sweet bits could be fashioned into a candy bar of sorts; slim (ish) rectangles of matza, a layer of halva, coated on top and sides with the chocolate paste, finally sprinkled with peanut crumb on the outside. Might even be able to double-decker the matza+halva, depending on ergonomics.

I totally agree. It's so much better packed in oil than water! There's just more flavor
Isn't Smoked Tuna the SS code name K Harris?
A can of bumblebee and a pint of water to start the day is one of my favorite kickstarts :)
Sometimes a cup of coffee if I'm feeling extra sexy
Pierrot Rico? Or Puerto Rico?
After 7 years dude is still standing upright with one hand holding the tray while eating with the other.
If something works don't fix it, right? 😅
Did he serve in the military? It might be so ingrained into him because of that, and also part of his online personality's gimmick. Like his brand is "standing upright with one hand holding the tray while eating with the other", and I'm glad it's working for him!
@Lex Bright Raven Ah, a Marine in Okinawa, probably.
Steve, I gotta say you did great with those fish cakes. The whole improv cooking segment was so cool (and also adorable).
He was so proud 😍
I knew when the salmon was lit on fire, we were in for a treat. The pan fried fish cakes were next level. MRE cooking show, inspired.

Salmon???
Tuna
Tuna, yes.
You are right my dude!!
What happened to the Kosher Spam (Loof) though?
One of the few UA-camrs I get genuinely excited to see.
Thank you Steve. I look forward to your UA-cam uploads more than anyone else's. I don't know why, but they keep me leveled and sane. The true Bob Ross of mre's. Please don't hesitate to continue.
That’s a great analogy lmao 😂
At this point we have to worry if he's sampled every available mre there is.
Steve1989 has little reason to upload more videos because he is already a millionaire, I have read.
I like how Steve basically made prison food for lunch. Crushed up crackers, packed tuna, peanut "butter", some other random stuff - if he had just put it in a plastic bag with a little boiling water instead of pan-frying it would just be a spread instead of fishcakes. Good ingenuity there.
Only Steve can make the most hardcore camping food look more appetizing than a 3-star meal. Love these vids!
They changed circa 2010-2011 with meat loaves (luf) being replaced with tune.
I never even bothered with the smoked tuna, I couldn’t stand oily sand all over everything
Did you enjoy being a war criminal in service to the Zionist occupation or have you grown a conscience since?
Steve did that in an earlier video. Check back in his list.

Seeing Steve upload a new video always puts a smile on my face. Even if it’s just a box of canned goods, with a little imagination and know how, you got yourself a meal on the tray. Truly a spiritual successor to Bob Ross.

Released on the first night of passover. Steve knows what he's doing.
It's good to see the P38 opener is still in service 80 years after it was invented.
the TUNA LAMP XD
I am convinced that Steve has become the first ever MRE connoisseur
The MRE Fish Cake was a real treat to watch. Steve is the man!
Everytime I get depressed or really annoyed with people, I watch Steve's videos and it makes me feel better. It's like magic you can't watch this and not smile. Thanks Steve!
Yes! Always a good day when Steve posts, needed this!
You start using the tuna as a fuel source, like cooking with an oil lamp?
@@SusCalvin Yea, exactly!
So I was like... okay, maybe like teriyaki sauce on salmon? Then he started to talk about adding it to the chocolate and I got straight up Concerned. I had to to pause the video and come down to read the comments before I continued.
😁
Exactly the same thought process here. Thank you for enlightening me, now I know of halva.

The IDF seems to have given the term 'Self-heating ration' a whole new meaning.
What I really enjoy is the depth of knowledge that Steve has about these rations!!! It's obvious he does a good deal of research!!
Steve, your channel is endlessly fascinating, from smoking 80 year old cigarettes to smoking Israeli flaming tuna.
Great video! Steve should write a cook book it could be called "Cooking with MRE's" Recipes to take your rations to the next level.
Kind of like Chopped where he has to transform all the ingredients of the MRE and make a full meal?
rule number one in life. Steve takes time out of his day to grace us with a review , we as mere mortals must watch it as soon as we see the posting.

A toast to Steve! One of the bravest men I've ever seen!
His gastronomic bravery and his encyclopedic knowledge of military history are legendary. I'm warmed, enlightened, and educated by his videos.
Steve, in the food containers of life, may you always find the "good hiss".
Keep making content, brother... I'll be here watching.
Really cool to see you taking the advice and trying the weird concoctions. They looked fun and might even taste okay.
Let's get this review out onto UA-cam... Nice!

I want Steve to cook every meal i eat for the rest of my life. Watching him cook/fry everything is one of the most silliest and entertaining things ever.
Lol Steve goes out to dinner yea I'll have the 1953 Chinese mre lmao
UA-cam needs to give you a plaque for historical accuracy, Love how he does his research on everything
I've watched Steve's MRE videos for years now and there still really good to watch.
Steve is honestly just a pure soul.
He sure is lol I Google a address he had up and was a martial arts studio in Florida. I can totally see him being into martial arts very quiet pure soul guy but don't want fuck wit him
I know a fellow from Canada who was a "lone soldier" with the IDF. He said that the amount of canned tuna in their field rations was insane. Frosted spread: "fread"
Well, 0.) Israel has a coast, and 1.) Most (non-shell)fish are kosher and can be eaten with meat products or dairy products.

Just in time for Passover! Thanks for another great video Steve.
Oh god this brings me back. A week on these makes you love the food back at the base.
My favorite parts were the beans and chickpeas (they are not found in the passover kosher boxes).
The chocolate was basically shoe polish but after a day its your best friend 😍😍
Why wouldn't the beans and chickpeas be in the passover boxes? They're kosher, aren't they?
@@caseydarrah they are, but on passover the ashkenazi jews avoid eating flour AND legumes (which include the chickpeas and beans).
The box says its for "legume eaters" but i guess they avoid as many legumes as possible so ashkenazi people would eat it too.
Also- the contents of the box change all the time so it might just be luck.

The Boer War era ration find was damn good!
Its always a good day when Steve drops new videos! Can you imagine the smell inside the tank with all 4 people eating canned tuna lol
How about the next day?
The next day is worst
I was thinking the same thing
At least if they're captured the enemy won't try using the tank
Ever since the PLA ration scare, I’ve worried when Steve doesn’t post once a month. Glad to see you doing good! Love your videos
Can you elaborate on said PLA ration scare? Google ain’t providing answers.
Great times yet again. Being a veteran, I love to take nostalgic trips back in time with you. Your descriptions of items do bring the flavors to life in my mind. Good to see you back. See ya again soon. Bon Appétit.
Steve's voice in this swirling world is like a lullaby.
Only problem is that I get hungry while watching.
We did the same napkin tuna candle thing, however we just put the napkin flat on top of tuna, it gave more smoky flavor and warmed it during winter.
Steve, what is your workout regimen? Because as I've watched you over the years, you've become absolutely SHREDDED
If hieroglyphics were on a MRE Steve would translate.
The fish cakes had me dying! What a good show of effort to make something interesting out of canned foods. Thank you!
fish cakes plus flaming tuna!
I always watch these when I’m starving and everything looks so good
Does anyone else lean towards your computer or phone screen when Steve opens a can to "better" hear if there is a hiss, maybe even tilt your head a little bit to the side...lol, Love the videos!
No sponsors, no ads... Steve is a real one!
Steve: I always practice fire safety in home, especially during filming sessions for my MRE evaluations
Also Steve: Hey guys look what I can do with the oil in this tuna can!
Now it's a Passover ration *and* a Hanukkah ration!
I used to set fire to crisps on a old broken sk8board as a kid screw fire safety.
One could heat the water for one's coffee or tea on this smoked tuna can!
Definitely a more chaotic scene than any other of his reviews. I can just imagine the reaction of the average person who has no idea what is going on here seeing Steve eat essentially the Israeli ration version of Nutella on a cracker as a can of tuna has been turned into a fireball in the corner of his tray. Lmao
On the side it says:
"מכיל פריטים לאוכלי קטניות"
"Contains items for people who eat "kitniyot"
Kitniyot are a category of foods which Sephardic tradition permits on Passover, whilst the Ashkenazi tradition prohibits.
It's a disclaimer for Ashkenazim.
Thanks for the epic videos Steve!
This was an amazing video! Wasn't expecting an episode of cooking with Steve, was an awesome surprise. Thank you!!
That tuna is like an edible version of an esbit stove. I could definitely cook on that.😂😂. And it’s more space and weight efficient than an esbit stove cause you can eat it when you are done cooking with it. Honestly surprised that it was never marketed to other militaries.
The way steve improvise a bland ration into something entertaining is impressive

When did this become a cooking channel?!? Great content Steve, love this everytime. Nice
