Never changes format, never changes style, never changes rating system, never changes music, simple, happy, jovial Steve and his MREs. Thanks for staying the course for so many years man
I can tell you one thing as an ex-soldier, when you are somewhere on a distant battlefield away from home, if you have a good all-day MRE can raise your morale very much and that is exactly what every country just forgets, this Ukrainian is very good, definitely something I could eat (although I wish the soldiers dont have to use it in war but in peace)
The only time of the day i look forward to during out field is meal time. Everything tastes great after a day in the field. Back in office, MRE taste like crap.
I've seen what the Russians are eating. It's no wonder Ukrainian morale is so much higher, aside from all the other factors. An army marches on its stomach.
@@ImTheKingOfHyrule It's terrible. They're like dogs. Some lost their MRE ration (that's trash anyway)and goes loot shop and smack hens to steal. This is how Putin's military are now.
If anyone's wondering why there's so much grain in the MRE, Ukraine has a major agricultural sector and one of the biggest exporters of grain in the region.
I am from Ukraine and I can tell you a little about the history of the creation of the diet. The soldiers were asked: what do you want to be there? They answered the food as our mothers cook at home, so that we feel the warmth of home and know what we are fighting for. And this is not just a beautiful story, but the truth. This is the task that was set. Prepare food that feels like homemade. You need to understand something about Ukrainians. We don't like restaurants and cafes. 95% of the food we eat is prepared at home. And we all eat together as a family.
That is a lovely story; I can’t wait to find some recipes to try and replicate the kasha and the soups in this MRE. Since the pandemic started we’ve been making all our meals at home, and it’s been wonderful.
@@ALT-vz3jn bro) just buy some buckweat and beef tushonka in some Yammy market(i dont know where u from but in Canada its like food store with estern euro food) so and put it to the microwave together. That is it.
A tip from a Ukrainian: you're supposed to drop the rye crackers into the pea soup, it's actually how it's usually eaten here- with croutons Edit: also, honey can be eaten on its own, but it's better to add it in the tea, not only does it tastes good, but also it's used as one of the home remedies for a cold
Steve, the low viscosity honey makes perfect sense. You are using it at a comfortable room temperature where you are. In a cold Ukrainian winter, that honey will thicken considerably and be more like other honey you have evaluated in other MREs. If it were ultra-thick at your room temperature, it will be almost impossible to extract from the little envelope when it is -20 deg all day and night.
@@penyuk1851 Russian winters are different, in the Western part of Russia, for example in Moscow, it is a very mild winter, in winter you can walk in summer shoes. But Winter in Siberia is a completely different matter. And what is shown here as winter causes only a grin.
@@penyuk1851 Was going to say our winters here in NY are far more brutal than those in Ukraine, I was showing my buddy from Ukraine pictures of my car covered with over a foot of snow and he was like "Is that after the whole winter?" No man that was overnight. Lake effect Snow is a hell of a drug.
Russian and Ukrainian are Latin-based languages- it’s just that the written alphabet is different. If you learn the Cyrillic letters, you’re able to sound out written Russian/Ukrainian. Once you do that, many basic and technical words share sounds or bases with English or Romance languages. You won’t be super functional for speaking, but will be able to recognize basic labels and signs like coffee, toilet, stop, restaurant, police, etc. Of course, we can’t visit now, but I would definitely recommend learning the alphabet on the flight over if I were to travel to a country that speaks Russian or Ukrainian.

One thing to note is that when UA troops were training in Oklahoma, they actually asked for more "soups" on the menu. I think this sort of stew/goulash/soup like most of the menu in this ration is actually a unique insight into Ukranian cuisine and food culture. World culture learned through a combat ration!
Here in eastern europe, the main meal during the day is the lunch - which usually contains of two course meal - soup and main dish. So even kids in school, or factory cafeteria or "lunch meals" in restaurants etc... have soup with every lunch, it is just normal to have soup with lunch every day.
I'm Polish and our cuisine is not that far off from Ukrainian. This ration looks like actual homemade food I ate as a kid, except for the herbatniki / dry biscuits. Add some pierogi / varenyky, barszcz / borscht, and you're set.
Here in the US you can find pierogies deep fried or sautéed in butter and served as alternative to fries or onion rings where I grew up in eastern Pennsylvania
@@rem145 then it's only in the east then because here in the west it's a main course that is boiled. And only boiled. I've never seen a deep fried pierogi not even at a county fair.
I like how I started watching Steve to see him eat archaic and disgusting food from upwards of 70 years ago, but now I find myself absolutely delighted when he demonstrates a well made, high quality modern ration
The old stuff is always fascinating to see and is the main reason I subscribed as well, but seeing the variety and different levels of quality in more modern rations from around the world is absolutely fascinating Plus if I see a good one I can probably find one to try~ Not so much with the old MREs lol
There's something so oddly relaxing and enjoyable about this channel and Steve himself. I've heard people compare him to Bob Ross and I think it makes perfect sense
I have always respected the Polish people and I know your hands are as tied as ours but at least from what I have seen your country has been outstanding in providing every ounce of support you possibly can which is more than most countries can say. you should be proud.
I wish I had even a fraction of the passion that this man has for MREs for anything in my life. His charisma and enthusiasm is so dynamic that he can make millions of people interested in watching something that should be boring. This is amazing.

It's obvious the Ukrainian military cares about the well being of its soldiers. When we were out on maneuvers I always came back several kilos lighter. Honestly Australian rations back in the day were absolute rubbish. You'd get more nutrition chewing bark.
That is a BEAUTIFUL ration! No Disgusting 'chicken ala king' B.S.. Food and as Steve said, no sugar-crash in 2 hours. I remember having to have your own salt, pepper, hot sauce and coffee to make an MRE edible, not good, just edible. I know of a Sgt at Ft Campbell that used to carry a propane torch in his pack to heat things in his canteen cup(that was back in the 80s before the FRH). I think a pack of jalapeno cheese would be great but this thing is fine the way it is. I could see keeping the Chocolate and a pack of those crackers in your pocket for a snack but with the portion size and it being real food (not sugar calories), you probably don't need a snack between meals. I am so glad that those folks have a good meal. They really need it right now. Great Video! Ya'll Take Care and be safe (And keep the Ukrainian people in your prayers), John
From what I have been able to gather from those in Ukraine these rations are only really used during rapid assaults or when in the froward most positions. With most of the Ukrainian armed forces getting either pre-prepared meals from field kitchens or being issued basic ingredients ( canned goods, doctors sausage, oil, bread, etc.) to cook while in the field
Doctors sausage, they developed it in the USSR as a nutritional, easily digested meat sausage ( containing milk too I think) for people recovering from illness. It wound up becoming very popular.
Also, pork tushonka can be saved for separate meals that can be cooked say with simple pasta once an opportunity arises. A huge morale boost, tested that myself while in the bomb shelter.
"..tested this myself while in a bomb shelter" Now, I understand and appreciate your desire to accurately test these things, but that's a bit extreme! Take care dude, hope you're in a safe spot now.
When the world needed him the most he returns… and with an MRE that is most likely being used in battle right now. Steve is either a marketing genius (who understands that millions of people are searching the word ‘Ukraine’) or he is so dedicated to his art he waited until the world was in disarray he came back. Either way I was glad to get the notification!
Nah Steve obviously doesn’t do this to milk money. It’s easy to see he’s a quality of quantity creator. Personally, I think he did this as his own little way of showing support for Ukraine.
I am very glad that you liked our ration, I have been subscribed to your channel for a very long time, and I always dreamed that you would review our ration. I also want to express my gratitude to all Americans for their support, we are very grateful to you and love you! Glory to Ukraine and God bless America!
I feel like the 4th heating pack wasn't because a specific meal needed it but to allow the soldier to break up their meals into four hot meals if they wanted. And while the tea either needs hot water or multiple hours (cold steeping) the instant coffee could easily be stirred into cold water and immediately consumed. And if you're going to go to the trouble of leaving a cup out overnight with your teabags, it's nice that your able to make two teabags worth.
@@nicolescats2 Also gives you an extra one for chucking in your sleeping bag when its cold, something that is apparently common practice for a lot of soldiers to the point where people would regularly eat some meals cold so they could use the heating pack to stay warm at night. Putting in extra's means troops are eating their meals hot and keeping warm at night.
@@nicolescats2 I bet there's tons of good uses for an extra heating pack. I don't think they cost or weigh much. So it's a case of 'why not?'. I bet that one extra pack per box is worth its weight in gold in a Ukrainian trench. It gets very cold out there in the fall, winter and early spring. Heat up some water for some coffee or tea. Heat up a water bottle to put in your sleeping bag or something small to put inside your socks or gloves during a watch. Especially at night when you probably don't want to be lighting any fires. The utilities are endless. I bet they added it after feedback from the guys and girls at the front. It's good to see stuff like that happening. To me it's an indication of a functioning system. Communication and evaluations are happening.
I love that, while you're being yourself, you are simultaneously teaching viewers additional tips and tricks (such as rehydrating the moist towelette to be used for hygiene/eatingware), and you're also helping the people who will potentially come to rely on these rations to be receptive and optimistic of them by offering praise of the many aspects and flavors of the ration. Lot of respect for that.
Man, there is a LOT of that beef and buckwheat porridge! You're gonna start the day off with a warm full belly for sure on that one. Nice to have you back, Steve!
That would be ideal for a morning person, I'd like to save the porridge for around 9, and start at 6 with only a coffee, the apple butter and some crackers. But that's for hiking.
@Jason Newman I'll say! Steve; hope everything is well with you. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you both. PS Steve, in Germany and Poland, chocolate-covered biscuits are popular. I'd try cracker + chocolate + apricot + coffee in the mouth at the same time.
I know he's gotten sick a couple times from a couple of different MREs, I just hope one finally hasn't gotten the better of him. I'm ready to hear "let's get this out on a tray. Nice!" And "Nice hiss" again. Steve is a UA-cam treasure.
At 15:25 the way he talks about the gusset on the retort pouch feels like a coded message for Ukraine. "It can stand up on its own... And that makes all the difference"
Ukrainian here. After 2014 there was a lot of changes to our MREs. It wasn't that good before. Also we leverage a lot of our local suppliers. We produce a lot of grains/meat so we use a lot of grain meat. Instead of putting fancy stuff, we just use common sense here: meat & grains. As with other countries, we do have mountain, summer, winter types too. But I don't think they are severely different in style.
I feel like you should have a large industry for exporting these MREs you have the infrastructure to produce them specially after the war when local demand will be much lower it will be useful to have and a market to export.
@@dashtesla That's a good point. Cheap, well made, nutritious MREs that are coming out of the nation with the biggest military success in the last 50+ years would probably sell very well.
I feel like this is kinda symbolic of post-2014 Ukraine. Its own distinctive foods and culture, backed up by really well thought through state-of-the-art technology and techniques picked up from NATO countries that have been investing in this sort of thing for decades.

Steve is a great example of a wonderful human being. Simple as that. He's often likened to the late, very great Bob Ross. And those who say that are damn right.
I'm very impressed that there wasn't much sugar for the whole day. There were essentially no desserts, no pre-sweetened beverages and only 1 candy for the day. The food looked wholesome and full of fiber.
Sugar isn't bad. Especially in MRE's. It's easily packed in small portions and contains high amount of energy which is needed, especially in combat situations, but the menu on this indeed looked well thought out.
He mentioned Spanish MRE. I checked the list of rations it has to offer, since I'm from there, and you get a bunch of hearty stews, a can of seafood for each meal and the sweets were only crackers and jams
@@ItsMeTrist It's generally better to get that sugar from complex grains for more sustained energy. Pure sugar leads to a crash generally and minimal additional nutrition. The rich kasha in this ration would keep a person going for a while just on its own, much longer than some of the processed sweet stuff in the US ration.
I really appreciate that he eats the whole ration, I have seen others try a little and then go to the review, much likely the rest is throw away. So, yeah I deeply appreciate that. Nice vid :)
Ukrainian MRE's are all about ordinary home-made food, but of extra quality and extra fat. You should try the reinforced menu #1 with borsch and beef stew. You'll get blown off!

The DPNP-P's are awesome. BUT the problem with all of our MRE's is that the quality and taste varies between contractors who supply them. Some of them are as close to homecooked meals as it gets (you got the right one there). Others - not so much. In any case, they are waaaaaay better than the ones we used to get back in 2015, with all those tin cans. The canned "barley with pork" one was especially atrocious - even the dogs we used to have on our FOP preferred to fast rather than munch on those. But the DPNP-P's - damn! I've cracked open one that was expired 6 months to see what I could salvage for the dog - and guess what? - the food was still good! The jam, the hardtack and the bread were all goners, but all the other stuff held up pretty well. A couple of comments on our "cossack MRE's" as follows: - you can heat those retort packages bu throwing them into a campfire. We used to do just that when we got a chance - to save water. - some of the MRE's have transparent plastic spoons. Those are sturdier than the white ones and don't deform so easily when dumped in hot water. - the jam packets are great snacks to have in your cargo pocket. Also, we used to mix them with water to get "brombas" - a sort of vitamin beverage to enjoy when it's hot. Also, you can almost make a cake or cobbler with those and some "Kozak" hardtack. - speaking of which, the "Kozak" hardtack you got is a rare treat. We used to save them for later snackies - with jam, honey or on its own. With the chicken menu you got, we used to scoop the nore gravy with the hardtack or soak it in it. it's surprisingly good. - the dry bread ("sukhari") are great with any soup or dumped in sweet coffee. - a lot of the guys loved adding pepper to the pea soup, myself included. - any "tushonkas" were saved for later. The catck is that it goes with anything. We used to throw some ramen in the retort, add hot water and boom! Instant morale boost with some added calories. - the honey proved to be a great antiseptic for wounds. Some deep recon experience from a combat medic there. Thanks for your content man. Always an honest opinion. Long-time fan. Слава Україні!)
I find it so sweet how you say you save the snacks and that some are a rare treat. Makes you feel connected to the soldier, seeing their human side. It delightful that it is food of all things that does it.
Regarding honey as an antiseptic for wounds: Sometimes the ancient methods work. Honey has been used in this way for over four and a half thousand years.
This seems like one of the largest, heartiest, and most flexible rations I've seen on Steve's channel. I'm seriously impressed. You get like... 5 retort pouches that would easily be a main in another mre. Very cool stuff!

That's a heck of a ration. Probably twice what I'd eat in a day, but I reckon for a soldier in a cold climate engaged in strenuous activity all day the 4000 calories are much needed.
Very glad to see the Ukrainian soldiers are so well fed. That meal looked delicious, with more than enough calories and energy to fuel them for combat.
That's one of most popular reforms since 2014, the Soviet-style rations were worse than dog food... Unfortunately, military budget wasn't raised by current government until it's too late. Thankfully volunteers and donations also help (soldiers, engineers, medics, territorial defenses, refugees, internally displaces people, all need food).

Steve's comment "could probably thaw out a frozen one if it were solid" is actually why the Ukraine went with a FRH that could work a bit hotter but importantly could work longer. Rations carried in a soldier's pack can get quite cold and a FRH that can give you a hot meal in 0⁰ degree weather is a definite moral booster.

As a Czech Republic citizen, I must say that I have been more than impressed by this review of Ukrainian MRE especially when it comes to quality of ingredients. You know, most of the meals you showed to us we Europeans eat in one way or another on a weekly if not daily basis. Be it breakfast, lunch or dinner, most of the meals you presented looked just great and considering the difficulties of combat situations this is almost like "eating in a restaurant". And as many before myself have suggested, you're still looking at the very basics of our cuisine so you're more than welcome to add local herbs, mushrooms, fruit and whatnots. I mean, there is wild nettle growing pretty much anywhere in these lands and if you added it to the "cooking" period, you would have easily obtained some high-protein greens, because nettle needs some cooking time to be really palatable. But it is nevertheless awesome source of protein and micronutrients. Thank you for this, I've been personally salivating heavily through this video and I am just gonna cook myself some goulash! Slava Ukraini!
Having the apricots in that breakfast ration reminds me of my grandparents from the USSR who did the same thing. They'd have me eat apricots and prunes before breakfast with them, and a glass of kefir

This is the first time I actually see Steve polish entirely the whole lunch & dinner. In most cases he just eats a few spoonful and leaves the rest on the plate. Greetings from Lviv/Ukraine. First time ever checked that channel. Ain`t no way my army has that top-notch army pack of food. Wow, I am shocked. Seems to me, we made humongous progress. Glory to Ukraine.
You did. The amazing progress Ukrainian forces have made in a mere eight years, with aid and training from NATO forces and most importantly the sheer determination and focus of your people to defend their home, is going in the history books. Former US general Hertling has lauded your country as having one of the best, most professional armed forces in Europe now. Seriously. Frankly, in my opinion, Ukrainians (all of you) have proven to be FAR more patriotic and courageous than the loudest, gun-toting, freedom-loving American. This resistance against such overwhelming forces is legendary.
@@ptrekboxbreaks5198 That they haven't yet is a bad sign, that Ukraine doesn't have enough control of the air to hit them (it's actually not as long as we thought, but a lot of logistical packages spread apart; still they're absolutely fucking it up and all bunched together). Hopefully the 70-something fighters we're sending will get there fast enough to do something about it.
Sign me up for Ukrainian rations all day every day, over any other country. This looks amazing for off-the-shelf. Low sugar/candy content, highly nutritious and fatty meal with starches. Hi Steve! One thing that stoodout to me with this ration is how easily you could ration the ration to 4-5 days if your not running around all day and need the calories. There's just about enough for a biscuits and hot drink breakfast and a hearty lunch/dinner each day. Such a great video!
They make cold weather rations much bigger to compensate for increased calorie burn They don’t make this things heavier or more expensive for fun, if it’s in there and it says 24 hours, eat the goddamn thing within 24 hours.
2 days, maybe. The mains need heating up so you'd have to spare a heater or get an alternate heat source - the fatty mains taste terrible when cold, except salty tushonka. (unless you got a vodka ration or something) I always find it funny when Steve calls a triple pressure boiled stew low processed... Nah, it's many MRE containing food substitutes.

Funny that the world wasn't falling apart when the US invaded that long long list of countries but as soon as they tell you to care about something it is, weird stuff!
Honestly? compared to most of the other rations Steve has reviewed these definitely do feel far more wholesome. And this is not just a beautiful story, but the truth. This is the task that was set. Prepare food that feels like homemade.

Where did you see the frosts in ukraine, they have a very mild winter.
Ukraine has surprisingly mild winters.
Ukrainian winter is somewhere between German and Russian in how cold it gets. Think New York with more snow.

😂😂😂
"what's your super power?"
It's like the Monkey's Paw - he wished to be fluent in all languages and was granted the ability but only when reading MREs

From what I have been able to gather from those in Ukraine these rations are only really used during rapid assaults or when in the froward most positions. TikTok and reddit have offered plenty of videos of the field cooks at work, and man the fresh stuff looks utterly delicious.

A couple of comments on our "cossack MRE's" as follows:
- you can heat those retort packages bu throwing them into a campfire.

And of course, good food gives them good morale. Which, is very much so needed in combat just as much as food!
That's one of most popular reforms since 2014, the Soviet-style rations were worse than dog food... Unfortunately, military budget wasn't raised by current government until it's too late.
And Ukraine gets cold.

Hi Steve! One thing that stoodout to me with this ration is how easily you could ration the ration to 4-5 days if your not running around all day and need the calories. There's just about enough for a biscuits and hot drink breakfast and a hearty lunch/dinner each day. Such a great video!

They make cold weather rations much bigger to compensate for increased calorie burn
They don’t make this things heavier or more expensive for fun, if it’s in there and it says 24 hours, eat the goddamn thing within 24 hours.
2 days, maybe. The mains need heating up so you'd have to spare a heater or get an alternate heat source - the fatty mains taste terrible when cold, except salty tushonka.
