I had the idea that maybe this could improve my DonnyFL moderator.
I used a microfiber towel in my test. Watch the video if you want to see the results!

Quieting the rifle using a moderator involves giving the compressed air somewhere to go other than out the barrel, at least immediately. Packing materials tightly inside the moderator gives the air nowhere to go. It essentially makes the internal diameter of the moderator that much smaller. Use a very porous, relatively lightly-packed material will give the air someplace to expand and lose some of its energy.

Thanks. I just purchased a Sumo and l'm comparing all the Sumo UA-cam videos. On your video, I appreciate you trying different types of "Sound Dampening Materials". Using comic piano music while "struggling" to install the material into the Sumo---shows you have a sense of humor!
The video result I don't think it's valid, I later realized that shooting without a pellet is not the best way to test, the effect of the pellet pushing the air produces way less noise. Thanks for the comment
What I have found with the Ronin is you need more air space and less dense material such as the brillow pad with the open fiber. On my Ronin after use of over 2,000 rounds, the felt material was pushed to the front leaving an open area of about 1 1/4 inch due to the air incial blast and the original felt was also compressed into the screen. Per Donny FL the felt was probably plugged with lead dust. What I tried before the repair kit arrived was, the first 1 1/4 inch was left open with no brillow pad, then covered the remaining with the brillow pad. This helped a lot with noise reduction. The area with no brillow pad allowed an open chamber that stripped the initial air blast allowing a slower release of air.
So now an extender was ordered which is an open chamber about 6 inches long. This will strip the initial air blast and allow a slower rate of ari release. I believe this will help with noise.
Very thorough testing Erlis. I haven't had the pleasure to own a Donny FL yet. I don't have neighbors to worry about to start with. But, I have a Neil Clague on my Cricket, and an Allen Zasadny moderator on my Logun that work great. Had a Huggett at one time that was really quiet.
The rifle is super quiet with the Donny, I do have neighbors but I think they don't mind
I know this is a old video , so this might be obsolete, but knowing how a suppressor works , and then finding way to damper the sound will work , by having so much materials covering the wire mesh sort of creat this barrel and the air traveling through it is not directed outward , but straight through , the fibers of the materials does cling onto some air and sound , but most of it is going straight through .
This is a good project to come back too 😉
Get some of the bandage tape that sticks to itself and put a layer down across the micofiber cloth to hold it.
Without a pellet in the chamber this test is moot, but thanks for the video!
When using thick foam, use blue painters tape on both ends.🤓

Let me tell you what I have done: I have fitted a 500 mm beer can to the front of a .22lr............the noise was considerably abated. Next: filling the can with sound deadening material resulted in next to no further improvement. However, wrapping the outside of the now, emptied beer can with a thin layer of soft high grip rubber mat did result in a further large reduction in sound........to the point where the .22lr became quieter than my .177 Gamo CFX underlever. Summing up: The moderator does have to have a large internal volume.......the bigger the better........within practical limits, of course. Do not try and stuff with sound deadening material..........that takes away too much volume which the blast wave needs to expand into. The wall of the moderator can also be paper thin ........ as light as a soda bottle or an empty energy drink can..........that is still fine........it will ping like hell but you easily kill that ping with a thin layer of that soft grip rubber mat placed on the outside...............maybe I shouldn't have told you all of this..............Do the following test for yourself: Take a 9mm side arm and tape a 2 lt empty soda bottle to the front of it......as good as, or better, than the most expensive, professionally made, moderator!
Really appreciated all this info, I'll definitely try that. I did 2 moderators one affected the POI but the other is my go to with the Nova Liberty, I used PVC pipes, but your suggestions are priceless, will see if applying this I can quiet down even more the Sumo moderator. Thanks!!!

Love your quest for a more quiet PCP. I too hunt Iguana's in my backyard.
Have tried everything as you have. I have made very time consuming moderators only to come back to the installed mod @ 81dbs. I do not consider that "backyard friendly".
Hopefully we will hit on something that is about 65dbs. I will continue my quest...hope you do too!
Ever since I learned there's foam in some of Donny's models, I've been wondering if it deteriorates over time... An interesting test, friend. Sorry it didn't give the results you expected...
The foam in mine I added. If the material inside goes bad, it's super easy to change.... welll, super easy depending on the material you go... do not use a towel if you don't want to spend few more mins :)

DonnyFL are outstanding. I know other good brands also work but I personally went with Donny because the variety og products he offers, I don't know any other brand with that many options, also Donny makes the adapter for most of the rifles out there
Now we know why Ernest didn't include a sound test. I believe you were testing to close to the wall where the sound waves were reflecting back

What is needed is more air space in the tube, stuffing it with more material will not help. Try removing the felt and replace with the sanding brillo pads. These are much more open fabric where more air can enter and then be slowly released. When you pack the tube thighter dense material it reduces the moderator to capture the air blast.

Just curious. If the foam was 1/2 thickness of what you used may be quieter. Seems like when it’s packed tight more air escapes out the end instead of being absorbed into the material Excellent video. Thanks.

It Has more to do with the size of the silencer being matched to the volume of air being discharged from the gun each shot. I have a 25cal Benjamin Marauder with a modified valve cranked up shooting 36gr slugs at 65-70ft lbs and was doing 117DB with the factory shroud. After modifying my shroud and using a 2in by 8in silencer with similar internals I built myself with dense scotch bright wrapping my internals my gun is now only 72db. That’s dam quiet compared to the 117db my gun was doing before. I tried 3 different size silencers starting with a 1in by 6in and ended up with a 2in by 8in going up in size each time and the material I used inside each size silencer made little difference as long as air could still pass thru the material but each time I went up in the size of the silencer I was dumping around 15db with a similar design as the Donny FL. CAN SIZE matched to your guns air volume each shot is the key to quiet. Also when using a silencer the gun will be quieter when firing a projectile, it forces the air into the area of the silencer as the pellet or slug is being pushed out the end of the silencer.
Hi James! Thanks for sharing this. I don't know if you noticed but I was playing a bit with DIY moderators and I did one that really works well with the Liberty, another not so much, not because the sound but because it affects the accuracy on the gun, I don't know why is that, maybe the pellets are clipping.
I'll keep in mind all your recommendations, I was just afraid to make something too long but you recommend makes total sense to me. Thanks once more!
OriOn The Iguana Hunter I had the same issue with the smallest one I tried but saw no signs of clipping but it must have been. My gun started shooting 8in to the right at 50yds, didn’t have that problem with the 2 bigger silencers only the smallest one. Since it didn’t quiet my gun down enough I didn’t really try to figure it out more than just a quick look for lead streaks on the internals. On the last one I built that worked the best I have 3 rows with five 1/16in holes drilled into the outside of the suppressor.
Have you tried the shot accuracy between wrap and unwrap interior tube?
I added the original insert back and it works perfect. No need to mess with it!

The more fabric you put into the Sumo towards the end of the video, the more compressed it became and thus reduced it's ability to absorb the noise. Kind of like fully flattening a sponge and expecting it to absorb water. Try doing the test outside too because that room is too small and amplifies the noise.....
You are right 100%, this video is not a good test!
Get a Donny FL Ronin. My 90 foot pound Airforce Condor SS .25 is reduced to a whisper with this one on the end.

What I've noticed - from my own personal experiences:
If I fire my rifles with nothing on them, they're the loudest.
When fired with a moderator installed - just air / no pellet, they're close to the same..
When fired with a moderator installed - actually shooting a pellet, they're quieter!
I have two of Donny's mods now.. I've been using the RONIN, and loved it.
It drastically quieted down the snap and echo from 3 guns [shooting inside]
I recently received the EMPEROR V3, and I'm testing that one out currently..
Hopefully, we'll both be able to get back outside.. Sooner rather than later!

Thanks for the comment Sam! I agree with you also, when I shoot a pellet, the moderator makes things way better, unfortunately I couldn't shoot inside the house. Also Bob pointed something out, and is that I should have point the mic to the muzzle to get better readings, I might have huge variations due to inconsistency on the reading, I was just relying on the mic capturing the sound on the room, and that might not have been the better way.
Who knows if in the future I repeat this test, maybe if I own a different moderator. I was replying to Alejandro and telling him that I think another very interesting test is to record the sound difference of different versions, a Tatsu vs a Sumo vs Ronin vs Emperor, that will be a nice test, IMO.
I don't think if I'm so patient, at the end I decided to use the original insert because I couldn't handle another round for the memory foam :D

What you [and Bob] mentioned also makes a lot of sense. Think acoustics.. there was a wall right in front of the barrel and mic..
The sound was probably bounding off from the wall a bit too - since there is no way for the waves to escape..
Positioning is probably the key for sure, but, I'm clueless as I haven't played with a decibel reader in forever..
Ah yes.. a model-to-model comparison would be a really cool idea too. I'm sure people would also really enjoy tests like those.

@@razasheikh9738 They are pretty much the same on accuracy, power and reliability. At that level I think is matter of taste. I was considering the R5M myself a lot. The R5M has the cocking mechanism on the front while the Taipan still have it on the back and this for some people is a deal breaker. But for me the cocking system on the Taipan is way better than the R5M, in the Taipan you don't have to worry about double feeding a pellet, if you decock the rifle with the pellet on the chamber you can just cock again and shoot without thinking just do it and shoot, with the R5M you need to move a lever and being more mindful of if the pellet is inside or not.
R5M are built as a tank, don't know if you have seen a video were Ed runs over 4 times with a truck and the gun shoot after that, if reliability is a concern nothing can beat that, I'm pretty sure if you do that to a Taipan is going to go to waste.
R5M is a bit more expensive, reason why originally I bought a Taipan, but brother in general you can't go wrong with either gun. If you're deciding between the two, rest assured that no matter which one you pick it's going to be a winner.

Hi Glenn, thanks for watching. Maybe, but also, "all options" is a bold statement, I think Donny offers something that works, and really good, but I'm still searching because maybe the best material is out there. So far, the best one I've tried is scotch brite works really good. I used it on my DIY suppressor video. I also think the mesh he used to prevent pellet clipping might be too thin and can prevent the absorption to some degree. I need to test with that too, I'm always experimenting as you can see :)

Oh yes, I did a couple of DIY suppressors videos and that's what I used, check them out.
the entire field of sound suppression is difficult, and confusing. i tested several donnyfl mods and had a net reduction of about 10-12 decibels. however, the perceived sound loudness was about half. much has to do with pitch of sound which seems to affect it's penetrating power downrange. also a high pitch can be more irritating , and therefore more noticeable, to people downrange. the whole idea about sound suppression-to not be noticed so easily.
Hi, you are absolutely right. I think I messed up with this video, because on top of everything I did it indoor. I think in the future I should compare the Taipan with and without the suppressor outdoor and at different distances, also I should do multiple shots not a single one.

@@OriOnTheIguanaHunter your effect was compromised with the wood floor so close. i had improved testing results within a room that was carpeted, and the bigger the room, the better because the walls also echo. a big carpeted basement works best indoors, but outdoors will be better. good luck. P.S. -i just tried a 6" huggett and a donnfl shogun on my taipan 25 cal- they sound equal. good luck

It works really well, but it makes the gun a bit long, I have the Sumo moderator, maybe with a Tanto won't be that long. I recommend it!

Hi I have just been doing a similar thing and I have had the best results with a wrap of scotchbrite one layer and several wraps of j cloth on top trying not to crush the scotchbrite to much . it is very quiet

@James Holmes over here in the UK we call them J cloth or Jay cloth they are blue and white just a general cleaning cloth use as menu wraps as you can but don't crush the scotchbrite.

Hi .. im from Vietnam.. ur 2 videos very interesting.. i did the same thing with the PVC Tube outter diameter 37mm inner diameter 35mm .. the sound less so much ... i think the problem is the metal thing between the suppressor and the foam.. u can try remove that use only the foam.. the gas will go to the foam faster and dont tape the foam so tight .. try it please 😁😁😁

Maybe, but the DonnyFL makes the rifle super quiet, I was just trying to measure the difference in sound using different materials. I’m more than happy with the performance of the Sumo suppressor.

@@alejandroortiz7154 You are right, the caliber makes a huge difference. The Taipan Veteran in .22 is super quiet but the .25 puts a bit bark to it. and your Taipan with your Ronin should be quieter than mine with the Sumo. You know? That will be great test. Comparing on the same rifle the different versions available. Because when I bought I didn't know what to order. But it's really hard to own many different versions of suppressors. But that test will be awesome to do!
OriOn The Iguana Hunter my brother has the sumo in his FX streamline and he lent it to me to compare with my Roni and they both sounded the same, in his streamline fx he makes it quieter

Hi, Good test with unfortunate bad result :( First time I'm looking at a silencer test and wondering how little the silencer silences :() Maybe you need another brand silencer but maybe it is best if you are looking for a big effect to make you a silencer if you have one.

After doing this test, a couple of people have pointed out some problems with it. The test was done inside and the reading were not taken consistently. I think the mic was getting a lot of resonance from the walls. Also when you dry fire the sound is not the same that when you fire an actual pellet.
I'm planning to take readings outside and placing the mic at the same distance all the time. I can tell you that the suppressor makes the rifle super quiet!
The angle of the mic and the gun as well as the distance are inconsistant enough to explain all the differences in measurements.
Put everything on a fixed bipod and tripod and try again. May be google how to do proper sound measurements. This way you Db readings mean virtually nothing.

Great Test Guy! I wil say however, without a pellet or slug passing thru the ldc, there is no back pressure. It is the back pressure that forces the air/sound waves into the sound deadening material. With it firing a projectile, the test is not going to tell you much at all.
Always test in the same conditions as you expect your equipment to perform and be used in.
