- The band ZZ Top is marking 50 years together, with a new remastered collection of their greatest hits, "Goin' 50." Jim Axlerod talks with guitarist Billy Gibbons, bassist Dusty Hill, and drummer Frank Beard (the one without a beard) who are still working hard to make their pedal-to-the-metal, bluesy country rock seem so easy.

"There is no other drummer". I like them even more now.
So do I Filip
I've been a fan for 40 years and after hearing that from Billy, I like them even more.
When I was learning to play drums I was all over the place and I wanted the KISS drumriser that raised up and shot fire and I wanted to spin around in a drum cage like Tommy Lee and my dad would say....”Be more like Frank Beard” I didnt get it as a kid.....he’s gone and I get it now and I wish he could have seen that I finally got it lol
Really impressed with the loyalty!
There’s one guy

There's cool and then there's ZZ Top. R.I.P Dusty Hill 😥
This band are so well respected down here in New Zealand. I remember seeing them in 86 with 67,000 other people in a stadium down here......May sound average by US standards but in a country of only 4.5 mill back then , That is a some following.
@@432htz3 ZZ Top actually could not sell 67k seats here in the US. Pretty big following in NZ
@@stanleymasterson1135 Yeah big following back then especially after the Eliminator album came out. They played at a speedway stadium at Western Springs in Auckland. I just went and Googled it and apparently the number was actually close to 80 k and it was in 87 not 86. { My memory isnt like it used to be =) } It was the only gig in NZ so people would have come from throughout the country to see them so that might be a the reason why they got so many. The concert was so loud that they were banned from playing there ever again because of the amount of noise complaints from nearby suburbs...Legendary .
@@stanleymasterson1135 I don't know about that saw them at the Capital Center on the Recycler tour not what it held but it was packed and that by far was the best concert I have ever seen RIP Dusty Hill
I like that statement🤣
So many memories associated with ZZ Top's music. Dusty, you will be missed, but live on forever.
That is great that they were all committed to each other which really helped with their longevity.... RIP Dusty
That little old band from Texas. Congrats on 50! Amazing
50th like for 50 years of ZZ Top!!
Zz. Still. Number one with me
See y'all in Phoenix....can hardly wait!!
Yippeedodaryippiddyday!! Oh yeah!
I was 17 in 1975 first time I saw them. Now in 2020 I've had the same beard I marvelled at back then going on 5 yrs. People even call me zz top these days because of it and I just laugh and say yeah uh huh that's right y'all.
A journalist asked Billy Gibbons in a recent interview if he could explain the longevity of his band ZZ Top.
His response, "Never learn the fourth chord."
good one

RIP Dusty. Your art will be remembered forever.

My first concert!!! Rest in Peace Dusty, we'll miss the magic. 💔😢

WORD from the Tex-Mex Community
ZZ Top is so underated. 50 years and they still rock!! Huge part of my childhood🤘
Underrated? They're one of the greatest of all time....
The sound that comes out of just three guys is incredible.
If you listen to the actual notes they are playing they suck. That back rhythm is recorded. I was shocked. Look at listen to it carefully.
"There is no other drummer" - my heart melt.
That kind of loyalty is rare.
zz top without frank beard is like rush without neil peart.not gonna happen.
Talk about loyalty. I must say, in today's world, they trough you under the bus, for a few dollars more. Just awesome all around.
@@kennethsmith8968 Or Led Zeppelin without Bonzo.
@@isaidwtfover That is true. However I think Bonzo's son Jason does a good job behind the sticks.
I saw Alice Cooper in 1973. The opening band was zz top. I had never heard of them. I walked out a huge fan. And still am!
Same here. was that in Montreal?
@@donhurst8459 no, it was capital centre in largo md. 12-19-73

RIP dusty, been a fan since early teens HUGE loss in the music world, lots of love to his family friends and band mates, love from new zealand
RIP Dusty Hill, rough boy forever
There is no other band I’ve seen more live than ZZ Top . Congratulations on 50 years that’s incredible .
I remember seeing them on the Recycler tour they had a lot of stuff happening on that stage you thought about it for days
@David Signor I remember that. Frank’s drum riser was the tail end of a flat bed trailer. And the claw constantly picking up various part from the junkyard… and of course, the “laborers” picking up junk during “Legs”. Quite a sight.
@@Mark-sj3xb yes I would have liked to see that 2 or 3 more times alot to comprehend at 1 show
"There is no other drummer" now that mindset is why they are still going strong.
Now, just one month after this post, would they even think about finding another bass player? Maybe - if they have some long time friends who play and who would be suitable to step in.
@@GomerfromIsaan and Dusty had the good sense too tap his replacement before he said adios amigos!!!! So fitting too see the tour continue and a new album with Dustys lyrics coming up also a fitting tribute with the hat on the mic stand remembering him during their tour!!! FANDANGO GUYS!!!! As Billy always says HAVE MERCY!!!!! ZZ TOP keeps rolling on!!!! RIP DUSTY HILL🤩🤩🤩🤩
@@barbarawells6845 That's good to know. Maybe they saw it coming.
Frank was my little league baseball coach, has a ranch outside the neighborhood I grew up, he is a fantastic guy and was as generous as could be. They say when they need to calibrate a metronome, they use a Frank Beard to do so.
" I had a new car when we started, it's a vintage car now"..... ZZTOP is a great band with a great sense of humor, gotta love them!
My girlfriend and i went to two concerts of zz top in 79 and 84. We got married in 83. I ve been married to her for 45 years. We listen to them everyday. Our 4 sons were raised with zz top playing. Keep on truckin Dusty. Its been great. Frank, Billy, thank you

Saw the Eliminator Tour and I'm seeing them this September. I can't imagine a life without ZZTOP.
I saw that Tour!
Awesome
Just saw then last Sunday night in Charlotte! Great show!
I may be mistaken, but I think ZZ Top holds the distinction of being the longest lived band with all original members. No replacements.
U2 has 42 yrs. with all original members.
They can never be replaced....
But didn't Billy Gibbons have his hip replaced ? Therefore the band is NOT totally the original members.
dusty hill had his hip replaced , he also shot himself in the foot with a derringer accidently @@johnny5805

Thanks Dusty for rocking until the end! You were the man! Thanks for all the years of hard work and rock and roll. You were for certain a master of your craft. You are missed so much! May you rest in peace because you’ve earned it!
I've loved this band for decades!!! It all started for me when I completely wore out three 8 - tracks & 2 cassettes of Fandango ; you can believe it folks, this is the working man's rock band for all seasons!!! Happy 50th, Billy, Dusty & Frank , you're fans love you and are looking forward to more great music from you. Thanks bunches !!!
I'm not American, and I generally don't like American music, but I adore these guys.
I think it is the simplicity that makes their music drive.
It's basic twelve bar blues, and that's the heart of modern pop/rock, and these dudes have boiled it down to its pure essence.
I expect to hear them rocking 50 years from now.
Best wishes from England.
We still have great talent here in America , Blackberry Smoke, Whiskey Myers and Rival Sons to only name a few and with that being said England’s 🏴 very own, The Temperance Movement is all so one of my favorite bands!
Are you sure you're not American? Dude
@@tearitloosetearitloose4670 Oh, quite sure, thanks.

Frank is one of the greatest...a great drummer really makes a band.

The 'metronome' of drumming ... An amazing drummer!
@@SlightReturn666 When I was taking drum lessons from a 70-year old back about 25 years ago, I was thrilled to hear some of the licks on Deguello that I had just learned about! "HEY! Frank used that!"
At 67 I grew up going to a lot of concerts like everyone else of my generation. But being from the Houston area, this was OUR band! Glad to share them with the rest of the world ! R.I.P. Dusty you will be missed!
I just saw them perform in Atlanta on 10/13/19 with Cheap Trick for their 50th Anniversary Tour! We rocked hard all night and I went home feeling musically high!!!!
I saw ZZ in '75, still the cowboy hat period. Small venue. My ears are still ringing.
Wow nice
I know what you mean I saw them back at that time the loudest show I ever saw.
I saw them just a few years ago for my birthday and loved it!! They never sounded better!
That's awesome :)
50 yrs doesn't surprise me. I ❤ Billy and ... ZZ TOP , music, guitars & style!!! 😎
Smoked many bong hits listening to them three Texans in my home town of Dallas Texas in the early 70's and still love them , have mercy cause I just got paid today and Jesus is just leaving Chicago and he's headed for New Orleans and I have been waiting for that damn bus all day .
Wow they're loyalty to each other is amazing.
They were legends when I was in high school. I am retired now, it does not seem real how much time as passed but I can only be sad for a while, so much music to remember and like a lot of young people, so much crazy times that went along with the music that pops back in your memory when you hear an old song.
R.I.P. Dusty.
For those of you who are new to ZZ Top, check out their first five albums - blues rock at it's best. I love ZZ Top!
Yea, those are still my favorites, tho I like everything they've done. RIP Dusty, thanks for the music.
I’ve liked every era of ZZ Top. 70s boogie blues, 80s techno rock… shows their talent and versatility
I am 62 but when I listen to ZZ Top I am 20 again. Makes my wife nervous.
Reporting from Manchester England. Billy is a hero in these parts. We know he has tone and taste, but his style makes us smile. Have mercy Miss Percy 🌴
Your screen name almost sounds like "Fandango" ...is this on purpose? Haha
I remember first hearing them on the Eliminator album many years ago. There was so much more to these guys than just that. Saw them play once, shut your eyes and it was just like listening to the record. They were a great team, RIP Dusty.
Great piece! If you think about it. . . Jimi Hendrix once said that both Billy Gibbons and Terry Kath ( Chcago ) were amazing players. And both bands have lasted longer than 50 years.
But Terry Kath has been dead for a while now.
Yeah, what Hendrix supposedly said about Kath has become something of a rock urban legend. Some say he said it, others say he didn't. Still, I grew up to the very first CTA album and all their great follow on albums. Heck, even their Christmas album is pretty dang good. They still tour as much if not more than any other band. They're in my favorite top 3 bands. I really loved them in their TK and Peter Cetera incarnation. Still I've seen them twice in concert. Well worth the scalped price tickets. Terrible though that TK would fall victim to Darwinism just when he was going to go out on his own. Who knows how truly great he could've been.
That is just amazing
@@1RungAtATime True. But the band seems more focused on that period musically, nowadays. They just completed a live project performing the entire " Chicago 2 " album. So, it's nice the band is honoring Terry in that manner.
Hendrix used to tell a lotta white guitar players that they were the greatest. Black folks call this “eating cheese.” Billy is hardly a great guitarist in any technical sense.
These guys are way better than what is out there now. Congrats of being together for 50 years.
Always loved ZZ Top from day 1. Glad their still going strong!
"so Frank is in Re-Hab, what are you going to do?"
"I'm going fishing." Now that is loyalty right there!
This made me smile and tear up at the same time! Truly great musicians, friends and in general, just good guys having one heck of a great life! 🕶️🕶️🕶️
