Here I am again, I fell asleep and the algorithm took me here again. I woke up to potato talking about India because the algorithm somehow secretly loves this stream.
I really don't understand why people keep talking about bringing back unit stacking. I think the "stack of doom" wars was much less interesting. Just, two huge stacks slamming into each other endlessly untill one stack is gone. It's much more interesting now, where you have to take into terrain into account. Choke points, longer flanking route with part of the army, how to protect ranged units while keeping them within range, cycling wounded units vs. sacrificing them to save time etc.

I was doing a one city challenge with Ethiopia, and during the apocalypse at the end, I random captured a city to liberate it so I could protect my trade routes, and I got a domination victory on that same turn and I was so confused, so then I checked and all the AI original capitals had been destroyed by meteors
3:06:30 "What would be really cool is if you could build units like LEGO." That's Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, the chronological sequel to Civilization. I LOVE that game, and it lets you build units like lego. You choose the chassis, the weapon, the armor, the special abilities.... it's REALLY COOL and I wish there was another Civ-esque game that did that. I only see it in space strategy games like Stellaris or Galactic Civilization, but nothing that's actually on a planet.
There was this a bit unknown (modern era) RTS game that you can build your units like that. You could choose any type of track, wheels and chassis then top for your tanks and all mechanical units. It was great really old thou maybe more than 15 years. I liked the idea back then !
Hey man I just wanted to say this video seemed like the perfect blend of gameplay and chat. Watching you play and make decisions is what's so entertaining but having chat for comic relief is great too. Great great content! Thank you.
Thank you for these. I recently quit drinking AAAAND lost my job, so finding fun things to do on a Friday night have been…. Interesting. I appreciate the long lets play
Hi Potato, about an hour into the stream your voice-over is about a minute late compared to what's happening on the stream, i.e. you're commenting on things that happened earlier. Still entertaining, though!
Doing my own A-Z challenge now, and watching this playlist for some tips. Religious Settlements turn 39 - I don't think I'll be able to copy that strategy. :P You pretty much have to find a relic or get an envoy at a religious city state to get that pantheon now in deity.
What did you think about the Godess of Festivals pantheon this game? There's a lot of plantations around and more culture would have really sped up your game.
can you make these challenge series with their alternated style gameplay? like catherine is best at culture victory, but she is good in domination. That will be really extraodinary and interesting to watch
Dear Mr Potato McWhiskey, working my way through your back catalogue while enjoying Civ in Lockdown 2.0, just wanted to say how much I'm enjoying your worldly discussions while playing. I always find it ironic how the people who complain about the dreadful and invidious liberal agenda are so often the ones who call those same liberals 'snowflake' on Twitter and so on. Anyway very enjoyable content. MML.
Not sure why chat was struggling with understanding why potatoes would be good on pizza, Pizza is just carbs and fat, two things potatoes go good with.
I suspect Potato never played Civ 3. Hence the disconnect when Civ players kinda complain about the AI. See once upon a time the combat AI in this game was ruthless to the point that players started calling BS. AI Spearman killing tanks was a "meme" before "memes" were even invented. Once the AI targeted you with it's stacks of doom it was usually a fight to the death, and the AI had no compunction about pillaging every last tile in your city until you were dead. It was aggressive, ruthless and relentless. In fact if your original enemy made the slightest bit of headway in reducing your numbers, Civs you thought were friends had no problem breaking agreements and joining in on the fun of beating you to a pulp. So loud were the complaints that the very next iteration (Civ4) included the transparency of informing the player of the victory odds (a feature that persists to this day) eliminated stacks of doom all together, and (tried) to put a bit more logic behind the diplomatic AI. The combat AI in this game has grown completely soft, while the diplomatic AI has shown only a modest improvement over three iterations since.
2:52:00 That's the entire point of games though, right? To enjoy them. You're right in wanting to play games only if you enjoy them. Video games aren't for bringing about social justice, and if they do that, it's great, but they have to make good video games. There's no reason for you to have to change that way of thinking
When I play on deity most of the AI has double of the science per turn at turn 150. They got about 90-150 spt sometimes up to 250 spt if theres Korea or Australia playing. What the hell is wrong with my Game?
That's because Australia and Korea have insane bonuses to Science. Korea's Science district gets a +4 bonus so long as it's not adjacent to other districts, their mines give science when adjacent to their Science district. All her governors also give bonuses to science gains in their cities. Australia can just get +1 or +3 extra science per Campus depending on the appeal of it's tile. Combined with the large boost to all science gained, the extra cities at the start, the tech boosts to unlock the Campus early, as well as the production boost to complete it faster pretty much lets them snowball their science gain extremely hard. The way players can keep up is by carefully planning their cities to maximize district adjacency bonuses, while the AI just places districts at random. This normally cripples their cities enough for the players to manage to somewhat keep up, but for Australia it gets countered by the random boost because of appeal, and for Korea it backfires because most of her Science districts keep their full boost.
Potato: What conspiracy theories are we discussing today? (Throws out the meme at the time) Me: Any "fact" beginning with "Scientists all agree" or "scientific consensus" is always my favorite conspiracy discuss. Facts don't require consensus or agreement. They just are. Therefore those aren't facts. Btw, you're my favorite Civ channel. With your analytical approach I'd love to see some other games down the road.
