You're like the Monty Python Spanish Inquisition sketch. "The war is the most important thing. And campuses. Campuses and the war are the most important thing. And Laurier's gold. Gold, campuses, and the war are the most important things."
Sounds like murica to me
I wasn't expecting that.
@@chuachenghong7788 Wrong, there's no oil there, it can't be good ole 'Murica
@@justsomeguy5470 no guns or freedom either definitely not the good ol' USA

"Immortals. We put their name to the test."
God I love that sentence from sparta.
yeah i remember when vin diesel kicked those persian emissary and yell
THIS IS BRAZIL!
Oh man, I love Spiderman!
Potato you sound like a disappointed father who's son is failing classes xD
At this point, I got a feeling that some people will just troll you by sending a saving which they play it badly on purpose. 😂😅
If you've seen any of the "saving your disaster" videos for Total War, that's already happened with that guy. It's kind of amusing because he then 1) pointed out all the ways that it was an obvious troll, and 2) won anyway.
@@Kitchensink108 LoTW is truly a legend. The dude is insanely good at those games.
Definitely happens but this guy in specific is definitely just a bad player, dude didn't even turn yield icons on.
@Blake Morrison The same thing happened to me today lol. I was attacking a city state when out of no where Norway declared war on me. Luckily I was already producing units in my city to reinforce the ones sieging the city state so I managed to push them back all the way to their capital
Making it all the more impressive when he still turns it into a learning opportunity.
The worst thing about this game is the lack of yield icons
REE
@@PotatoMcWhiskey I never used them until you mentioned them. Now it’s so much more simple.
The AI when a warrior is blocking the capture of the city: *Ignores the warrior and ranged attacks the already zero-HP city
The AI when it is actually in a position to take the city: "You know what? I think I wanna melee-attack the warrior."
REAL
As if game designers wanted us to win and feel good about ourselves. Hmm...
@@kir2847 No, they're just really bad at programming.
poilboiler not really - good AI for a game this complex is quite difficult and expensive, and the company chose to put most of their investment in other areas. Personally I would prefer more investment in better AI and screw the graphics and sound; but they do seem to know what most people want (or at least will pay for) and naturally they build that.
@@poilboiler lol no... u do realize ALL AI are INTENTIONALLY dumbed down with limitations..
literally.. AI is designed to be beaten by players in the easiest way possible without tryna make it obvious....
the AI in all difficulty settings is the same.. just buffs are giving to them... so they are still under the same LIMITATIONS...
example.. take away all the buffs on diety right.. infact.. give the AI debuffs so they are at a disadvantage...
BUTT remove some of the limitations of what the AI is allowed to do...
YOU WILL LOSE to weak ai units with even ur strongest units even with the buffs..
u underestimate just how supeior even basic AI is to the human brain .. remember LIMITATION are INTENTIONAL placed...
though.. people can design bad AI.. butt even bad AI is put under limitations and if lifted to some extended.. even trash AI will probably beat u 100% of the time..
watch this video "is the AI in video games to stupid?"
ua-cam.com/video/ejdDjjJhiEk/v-deo.html
sad truth is.. u as a human are basically incapable of beating an AI .. thus games would never be beatable and no fun.. and cause we would die literally at the start of every game ever.. so they are drastically limited.. so yes.. WE CAN "FEEEEEEL" GOOD...
its like "bots" in fortnite.. pros mock and call them trash.. butt they dont realize epic games LITERALLY can remove some limitation/restrictions and pros will literally never win another fight to a bot..
tbh.. just cause i would love to see it.. think all games should have an OPEN AI type of mode.. 😂
like imagine a single account for OPEN AI or things like it.. and u end up sometimes in a lobby with it.. xD
These "save my crappy game" videos are some of the most riveting videos on the internet. Keep this series going!
I'm emotionally invested in this now and need a followup
1:12:52 "this thing passing killed us here"
10 seconds later Laurier offers *salt*
I'm crying here, psychic AI in Potato's games.
Crushing the woods for a campus, then buying a builder, and then moving Magnus into the city is the most Potato thing I've ever seen.
shut up, don't tell people about my mistake oke
Also for that moment he moved established Magnus out of the city and proceeded to chop wood there one turn after that. I'm glad that i'm not the only one who could have done that :D
There were a ton of tiny things I spotted, but I also know I couldn't have saved this game, so...
Anyways, this was a very educational video.
What was the most optimum play there?
@@thomaswilkes9831 There were a handful of movements which weren't optimal, and obviously the forgetting to change civics and tech at the start.
The most glaring is probably not spending faith at the end of the golden age to get more builders.
Should have called this video "This is bad... This is really really bad"
You should call this series "Potato's Tots". I love these pls do more!!
that was intense. i really like this series it somehow makes civ seem exciting, and I think there's a lot of learning that can be done from this
PotatoMcWhiskey when he sees crossbowmen: "I fear no immortal, but that thing... It scares me."
I was playing an Emperor game with my brother and a bunch of AI and ended up starting a war with the Cree (I was the Dutch) that went on for dozens of turns. I tried to peace out but halfway through the Inca got called in for an emergency and their army was twice the size of mine and the Cree combined. I was really scared that I was going to get wiped out by the technologically and numerically superior coalition. Honestly I'm still not sure if this game is salvageable because we just hit the industrial era and the Inca are somewhere in the Atomic.
At least my industrial squares are amazing.
you have more of a chance then you think. The ai is really bad at effectively using their army. as you can see in the video the ai will do dumb things like shoot a city with zero health or attack units when it can capture cities.
Well there's your problem! You're using industrial squares. Squares only have 4 sides.
I always put my industrial zones on hexes, because that way I can receive adjacency bonuses from 6 sides.
never underestimate the power of human wave attacks. use that industry.
luckily units don't drain city population.....
Bro if have walls, a few encampment and field cannons, you can protect against anythimg
@@MaddyBird666 i'll make sure to apply that information to my game from last year...
Swordsman be like: "I am the shield that guards the realms of man"
That war was pretty freaking intense man, impressive how you pulled it off
edit: looks like it continues for a long time lol
we've always been at war with Persia
@@PotatoMcWhiskey Yeah I just completed watching it now, I had thought you'd have completed the war at 50:00 or something like that, but apparently you never did :D
Dude the pet when he had to just leave units around the city to block units because it’s health was too low was super cool, never would’ve thought of that strat
@@parahaxeus1267 ah yes, the stalingrad strategy.....
@@parahaxeus1267 I've actually done that in civ 5 to block an AI from capturing a neutral city without declaring war. It's pretty silly that because of game mechanics you can besiege a city (aka surround it with troops) and because you aren't at war, the attacker's armies can't fight you or march their troops through the area.
"You settled off the fresh water; is that a thing that you do?"
Ight you have my respect General McWhiskey. That was a masterful defense
if my CO was named "McWhiskey" i wouldn't be sure whether to celebrate or book it....
My guess is that the initial save is from the turn that Persia took Brasilia, or maybe the turn after.
One more thing you could have done is purchasing builders before hitting renaissane. This way 700 faith is basically wasted.
All in all great game salvaging skills
"The Thousand Nations of the Persian Empire descend upon you! Our arrows will blot out the sun!"
Potato: "You stole my next line."
Man that was absolutely amazing !!!! I don't think I could ever win that war.
I know I'm awesome

@@cageybee7221 again how about playing as Poland 🇵🇱 being at war with literally everyone since 3500 bc until 2000 ad with no allies constant invasion and 2 cities until you were ahead in tech and got nukes and sacrificed all but your capital for a distraction whilst you nuke all the enemies to hell and somehow win a science victory just before you lose your capital to the swedes
@@PotatoMcWhiskey Tell me, do you bleed?
Absolute masterclass
Loving this series. You can beat deity with your eyes closed; I feel like these vids are the only time we see you actually challenged lmao.
Situations like this game I call The Churn. You don't really get to play the game because your decisions are so restricted to churning warfare.
Man you can just hear Potato trying his best to not call the guy a straight up maniac with his settling and save file turn
i think selling your iron off from the start mightve made this a bit easier. Also the AI being too stupid to focus the right things really is why i often say that even if seemingly hopeless, aslong as its warfare you can often rely on the AI being bad :P
imagine if you were crushing brazil in a war with several of your best archers versus one of their archers, and all of a sudden they start talking extremely fast, chopping down several forests and has 10 archers now
I like the analogy of "driving a freight train"'. it's a good analogy, but also I don't think many of us are train drivers

1:11:26 "completely ruining MY game"
this is a war that would make england and france blush.

“You have to play like your going to lose if you don’t win”
I want to see a follow up of what he did with it
Honestly, flashbacks to physics classes with this talk of velocity and momentum.
I really enjoyed this video. Seeing you genuinely use everything in your toolkit to work your way out of the hole was some riveting stuff.
I absolutely LOVE the series, can't wait for the next disaster (yes I like watching people suffer).
Just want to say how much I love this series. It's fascinating to watch you dig people out of the swamp. I play on the switch and I don't own a computer that can run civ6. I wish I could send you some of my game files, maybe in November I can. Keep it up man!
I love this series and wish there were more. They're like little puzzles that you're being challenged to solve. It might be interesting going forward to have them more curated for you as a challenge.
I’m liking this series. Keep it up! The long videos are such a treat.
40:08 you sound genuinely pissed. ;-)
A couple of times you mentioned using a ram or siege tower with knights, I thought they patched that out.
You're right, old habits die hard.
@@PotatoMcWhiskey I got a little excited that you might've found an exploit.
They need to nerf Cavalry. A curaisser army only needs Iron and no upkeep and it can take out an infantry army that needs oil for upkeep.
@@RuiRuichi Nah, heavy cav is there to kill units. Melee is there to take out walls in the early game and like potato said, to block for other units.

so impressed... it was a desperate situation and you turned it. Awesome
i love these, do more of them please!

I really wanted to start playing civ6 but the complexity of the game at that time looked like too much hassle to learn. After watching a couple of your vids prince difficulty is like a cakewalk to me now. Thanks, dude!
It's not really a hard game really
Yea ai is dumb
Playing germany against france in a true start location can win you any difficulty with no effort

Potato, the way you saved this utterly lost cause game leaves no doubt in my mind that you are a god amongst men.
Impressive. This is a really great tutorial for how to survive in a doomed game. I have to say not many players can pull this off, even for pros.

Potato was genuinely frustrated in this one and it made it much more entertaining 😂 thank you to the guy who sent him this save!
Grinding through that crazy war though 👀

You could get this save from turn 1 if you use the seed and configurations.
Awesome vid.
Bring these type of videos back please
"we're not outta the woods yet cause.."
i was ready for you to say "cause you didnt chop it" lol but you still said "cause we are not outta the woods yet is that simple" which was just as funny lol
One observation I've made is that you typically don't fortify your units before promoting or pillaging. I always fortify first, then promote, and it will still heal an additional 5HP above the 50% from the promotion. Plus they're fortified from incoming attacks too. The same works with pillaging. It's a must in my books. =)
You're right, I am aware of this, its just something I forget.
@@PotatoMcWhiskey You're a pro. Keep it up. Love the vids.
god this is soo fun. so many great tips
Hi potato, really nice to see your video and improve my playing. Wanna ask you how to could make the yield (food, science. production, etc.) from other cultures visible?
I am curious how many of these saves sent to you were genuinely unsaveable, I do love watching these so I can learn more though, please do continue this kind of stuff c:
a LOT
@@PotatoMcWhiskey oh my lol, I do commend you for at least trying, seriously I really do love these videos so please keep dong them, it's so much fun learning how to properly play
That Gordian defence was a real, wait for it, Gordian Knot, wouldn't you say? AHHHHHHHH!
At the end of the heroic era you had a bunch of faith that you could have used to buy some builders/units, but you were only in position to make that kind of optimization mistake by playing pretty damn well up to that point.
honestly these videos are a bit long for my taste, but they're like a freeway pile up - I just can't look away.
you're right. But take that as a hint that you don't need to play perfectly to win Deity every time.
@@PotatoMcWhiskey I might just need that on a t-shirt "potato hint: you don't need to play perfect to beat deity AI in civ 6"
Potato is the friendliest UA-camr in the world till it comes to war then its "The war is everything" time.
Like this type of content a lot
A funny little thing, Pasargadae is, in its translated iteration, is a commonly used metaphor in Brazilian literature as a perfect, utopic place that ultimately doesn't exist, with classic poems and literature using this "perfect city" in various ways. Which is a little bit interesting to note considering how the game was going.
I really enjoy these it seems like you enjoy it more because you haven't been beating the ai from the start of the game
"Play like you're going to lose, if you don't win."
This is actually a good idea.
Is there a playlist with all of those dissaster campaign I love them so much
These are great!
I can’t be the only one that would like to see Potato win this game.
1:32:40 You should have built it next to the capital and on the coast, so you could get a +3 harbor and the commercial hub might have been a +4 commercial hub, as commercial hubs receive a +2 adjacency from harbors.
Leaving yourself open for early invasion is the #1 fatal flaw I had to eliminate of mine personally. I always build Scout -> Extra Military Unit first thing and any close neighbor assume war and even start it myself.
Good save!
Impressive, most impressive.
8:05 "Velocity" is sufficient. Velocity is a vector, it has both magnitude and direction. This totally wasn't drilled into my brains by every physics teacher I ever had.
That or Despicable Me.
