this car is brilliantly set up for heel & toe.and at first I was adamant that in no way could a GTV V6 keep up (as mine doesn't seem that fast). However, having looked at the 0-60 figures, which are a second quicker than a 3L v6, it does match the video. The porsche pulls away in the straights but is matched (if not surpassed) at the corners, which makes sense because the GTV has very tricky rear suspensions and excellent handling characteristics. Not bad for a car which is probably a tenth of the price of a 993! And that GTV sounds nuts!
I agree Chris. I needed more space and went for a 159 Sportswagon, but couldn't´t part with the TS.... I cannot imagine ever doing so. When-ever I drive it, I think "what a nice experience." When I park it, I look back and smile. When I walk down the rows of parked cars, most of them are absolutely boring. Approaching the TS, I am again happy to think "that´s mine..." The only other car I see that either in the mirror or approaching opposite that I consistently think, "Now THAT looks great," is a Brera.
The GTV is 2001 Jeremy Clarkson´s number 29 out of 100 cars. Not too bad. The acceleration is 6.6 sec compared to the Audi 1.8T Quaddro, a much newer car at 6.5, while the top end on the Alfa i slightly better. Remember it is designed in 1987 and survived almost unchanged until 2004. Says something....
james derry Well on that note, I just putchased another one lol. I now have a 98 GTV TS in silver, and a 2002 GTV TS in black. (and a 147 TS). The Silver 98 is up for sale now. Addicted much? lol
Chris Winter to 4pots it seems. You need to live life in the v6 lane. Whole different game. Sell em all for a gta or a 3.2L gtv if ya wanna keep that model. Gta....... I'd say 147 selespeed, though that's me. My mechanic loves the 156 and races one. Though I saw his car get beat by a 3.2 GT. Endstate, v6 buddy. You won't regret it!
No. Don't wait. Get one now. Rising in value. Beautiful to look at and drive. I've had a gtv 3.0 lusso for over 12 years. I love it. Best car I've had. Get a good one and you will not regret it.
Driving a Porsche is not easy, the alfa is more forgiving and is probably a better choice for non race car driver like me. Whith pro drivers the porsche would have been faster. Seeing this, i really miss my 3,0, its time to get one off these lovely cars again! An exotic for a price within reach for many people!
Hey man, I have the opportunity to buy an Alfa GTV 3.0 V6 turbo in mint condition for only 4.000€ with only 60.000km. Is that a good buy for a everyday ride or does it have reliability problems? And maybe that engine is a bit too thirsty for my wallet. I really don't know.
Very nice driving and Heel and toe, but you seem too slow changing gears! Are you being soft on the gearchange becauseof the gearbox being too sensitive? Cheers!
Yeah it frigging doesn't. I wrecked mine (series 2 3 litre red v6 gtv) - put better tires on the front than rear and it snap OVERSTEERED. Managed to do a 180 and park it in a space between trees but tapped one tree and it was a write off. Snap over steer is much more of a problem in the GTV than under steer, and it can be a tricky beast to catch snap over steer in! Upgraded to a maserati gransport which is much more predictable in over steer, but miss the GTV nonetheless!
Alfa great sound, but porsche is way better.. But 996 is old check gt3. And then see the difference. I want to say porsche is porsche. And i like alfa very much.
You are aware that that particular Porsche doesn't have a suspension under it right? (I don't even understand what they were thinking of with single triangle arms in the back going almost into the 2000s on these price and power levels). The only thing it can the take advantage of is with the engine being in the back it can make better use of its (as well as the brakes') power. But as soon as it comes to lateral movement instead of longitudinal, the "Serpent" becomes true to its name.
The 916 GTV6 is a lovely looking car with a great engine however, it is badly compromised by not only being front wheel drive but also based on the Fiat Group FWD Tipo floor pan and no amount of suspension mods or misty eyed Alfisti bullshit are ever going to make it a thoroughbred in any sense of the word. And yes, I've owned a 'Cup' and just bought a £350 '97 GTV V6 in need of a clutch. A great car for a cheap old shitter...but NOT a sports car.
+bugattieb110ss Really aching after one of these after an SW20 Mr2 and a BMW E46 320i. Kinda worried about the front wheel drive but everything I've read says it would be a great fun car if you can handle the potential problems. What's your take on it?
+Ian Edmonds Don't but a 2.0 version, you will be very disappointed - especially after the MR2 (which I presume wasn't a turbo?). The V6's are sexy with a soulful engine but are ludicrously expensive to maintain and are NOT a drivers car. I'd suggest you avoid Alfas altogether, especially if you don't do your own maintenance. I wish I had! Might I suggest a Mk1 MX5 with a few suspension mods? They're cheap to buy, RWD, LSD, classic insurance...and bloody reliable, what's not to like? Alternatively, If your budget stretches to it, an Integra type R. Best FWD car I ever owned - by a long way.
The V6 is a great engine, but in the GTV it really is a bit more than the chassis handles, while the TS is almost in a perfect balance. The GTV is presently not getting expensive, although it is starting to get old enough(!) But regarding reliability, I have the GTV from 2001, that I have owned for 7 years. I have never had any issues except for an alarm that would go off after the gf drove it. I replaced the tyres, the brake discs and just recently the original exhaust finally needed it. That is excellent service IMO and I just dont know if I am lucky, or if the reputation is unwarranted. I also have a 159 Sportswagon and it is now 2 years ownership. Changed the tyres and everything works perfectly. So more luck, I guess.....
Good point, well made. But please don't forget that that what ever engine you choose, it's fitted to a dreadful Fiat Tipo chassis...My ex GF had a modified Fiat coupe turbo 16v with the same chassis and it was awful. Buy a mk1 MX5 while they're still cheap...
bugattieb110ss ... that fiat Tipo platform that you consider substandard was good enough for the Alfa 155 to dominate European and British touring car championships in the late nineties. Sounds like your not Alfisti enough to know that.
No, was only first impression with start of video (porche pilot not in max load) : because after that point GTV cant pass porche and over all, his pneus scream on any turn (not porche for ex) then, this gtv is Not light like a Lotus Elise.. 😅

kroert beiejf gtv's are peasant cheap. Pathetically cheap. 3.2L gtv's, that's a different story.
@@Paul_Zernick the 3.2 looks like it was hit by a german designer, pig ugly.
Until recently, no one looked at these cars, but now they are rising a lot of money.
The Busso sound is mind blowing!
When you hear that roar of the beast, you know it’s Busso!
💪😎
Fantastic driving. The Porsche clearly has more power and handling but your driving line is so much better. Bloody brilliant!
the sound of this GTV is beautiful!
I had a 993 and currently own a Alfa Romeo GTV Cup (#60) so thanks for posting this vid!
Just WOW. Out of words... Thank you for this great video James (and Alex !)
But wait..... why isn't the understeering like everyone says? :D Love my TS and am resisting the temptation to upgrade to a V6 soon.

Great video. I thought you were past him earlier. My TS is faster than the 911T I was in the other day, more comfortable and handles better........

The Alfa is old as well dont forget. Apples with apples here I think.
i think you are pretty stupid
porsche is only a sports car, same class as alfa and yes actually a lot of 911's are 6.5 to 60 gtv? 6.5 to 60,
dont chat bollocks
The porsche driver is either not trying very hard or a poor driver, no attempt to hit an apex, just cruising round.
Alex must be an Amateur driver... hes not even trying.. and that FWD Alpha will never catch a porsche...
