Gotta say, I really appreciate that you always explain the basics when you do these videos instead of glossing over them. I know some creators start to find it a waste of breath to repeat instructions that come up in almost every build. But as someone not very good at soldering and working with small electronics, I really like getting all the information I need in a single video, instead of having to look up techniques in separate tutorials.
@@Aeduo if it's salvage I'm all for it. But I've seen too many people destroy working systems for some project, and then not have the skills to finish it. And then trying again.
It's neat. Does feel a bit of a "they were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should" since so much of the DS functionality is lost with the mod. :/
great to see the ds modding scene growing this way, I build these ds inside gameboy shells myself too and I have worked with andre a few times already and his work really helped streamlined this for beginners
I think I would have liked some shallower shoulder buttons. Having those long triggers makes it harder to stick into a pocket. Nothing a new 3d printed set can't fix!
This is what I've been waiting for. Retrohai is super creative but his methods aren't nearly as technical as they could be. Glad to see this is becoming more accessible.
The Chipquik is a really good tip, that stuff is magic, and I've never seen it used outside industry! As an aside, your soldering and rework skills are excellent, probably the best of any retro modding channel I've seen. I've been soldering for years and have my IPC7711 rework cert, so youtube can be a bit of a horror show sometimes, but I'm glad to see someone showing folks how to do things properly and safely! Soldering is really daunting for beginners, and things go way smoother when you teach them the correct techniques from the beginning. It's bad enough lifting pads on a board that you can replace, it's sometimes catastrophic on one of a kind retro gear.
So hyped that you built one of these for yourself! I built a DMG104 variant last year (has a GBA SP's top screen attached) and it is still my favorite project to date. I didn't use a kit, but all the parts are still easily found online. I'll have to use that ribbon in the future, cause soldering those cartridge connectors wire-for-wire is a MEGA pain in the tush. Mounting the ports and volume slider without a PCB is annoying, so the fact that it was all on one board is nice. Plus, the xbox style triggers are sick too, I bet they are way comfier than regular buttons on the back i used. Highly recommend the kit Tito got if you want to try this yourself, it feels super rewarding to build one and show it off!
Hey pixel man, do you know if these parts are still available online? The kit on ETSY is showing they only ship to Europe but I’ve always wanted to try this. It’s been my dream for a while to built the 104 style system but with the AV out 3.5mm jack. I already have that set up but getting the DMG form factor is the hard part… let me know if you know where to find them, thanks!
Tito, I love your channel on general, but this one? Nah. Take a DMG, make it so it can't play GB/C games? Basically build a GBA with way worse ergonomics? I'm still gonna watch the whole video, but this is kinda a dumb mod IMO. "Yeah, yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could that they didn't stop to think if they should."
If only you could also add a pocket knife for instant self defense on the go. You press a release button and boom a knife protects you from getting robbed
Such a juicy joyous journey we just went on! Love these sorts of builds, and seeing the well deserved shout out to Hai was quite respectable. He’s been making some of the most wild handhelds on the net, and it’s cool someone else has taken it a step further for us lazy folks!
This is a cool mod for those wanting to play GBA games using the original GB form factor. For my own Gameboy DMG I added a backlight and bivert mod. That way I'm retaining as much of the original as possible while making the screen much more usable.
you uploading this and austin uploading building the ultimate steam deck at like the exact same time is kind of funny in a cosmic sorta way. Not like they're that related but it's just curious
I love the video and the mod. I just don't like to call it DMG Game Boy, since it does not have the ability to read GB or GBC cartridges (although you could emulate those). Really cool video Nacho! Thanks a lot!
Heatset inserts are great, they make solder iron tips specifically for them I use them quite a bit with my prints, I found the soldering iron tip getting stuck in the heat inserts too often, the tips for the inserts don't have the same problem, cheap enough as well

Seems like a tragic waste of a good DS. A ton of difficult work all for a single screen, downgrading to mono sound, losing two buttons, and really ugly triggers out the back. In an era of excellent FPGA cores and emulators, you can get a better handheld in the DMG form factor without butchering an excellent console. Swing and a miss for me
Hard disagree. There are so many broken DS lites out there and instead of sending them to a landfill, this helps turn them into something fresh and new. What are you suggesting people do, hoard all the original DS lites in a warehouse to protect their purity? It's an outdated piece of tech and is unappealing except to modders and enthusiasts which is a very small demographic. To top it off, this mod is reversible so it's not "wasting" anything. If anything, it's recycling it.
23:42 as a huge fan of wii portables (so much that i made 3 last year) i find the trigger design for the g-boy very comfortable. i don’t think that he would want to piggyback on gman’s design and be called out on it that said, i’ve got a ds lite mod to do
I don't understand why they didn't just use a GBA chip instead of a DS chip. I mean, a DMG that doesn't even play GB/C games? In favor of playing DS games on a single screen with no ability to switch screens? Why even bother? Why go through a hardware mod that REDUCES functionality?
Dang I remember when this channel had 15K subs and was creating the most best, most under-rated videos on youtube. Now it has 320K subs and it's still creating the best videos. (Still a shame to see a DS Lite get harvested, though!)
I just don't understand why it couldn't play game boy and game boy color games as well If it was both of those plus advance plus the DS I would definitely do this myself otherwise meh lol The video itself is great and you're great I just mean as far as my own interest
Yes! there's a mod for that. It's usually used in gameboy macro builds but I've also seen creators use it in the DMG103 too. Alternatively, the very cursed DMG104 has a GBA SP screen on top of the gameboy shell, hinge and all
As someone who built a DMG104, a slightly different kit should be possible. Nintendre's kit already supports X and Y buttons, the hard part is shell modification for those buttons and the hinge!
This looks cool. Obviously I often say to your builds it's too complex for me but I love the idea! If you like to play top screen DS games with that system i.E. Mario Kart DS, I have actually seen someone using that mod with GameShark codes to swap screen output. Alternatively, maybe there is a way to route both displays onto that screen and make it switch via an additional button?
This one is just a bit silly. Surely no one was asking for a butchered half usable DS shoved into a DMG shell. Not to mention the minimalist and slightly pretentious facial hair logo plastered all over the back of the system. Looks fun to build but is a big no from me.
I appreciate the work that went into this but chopping a DS in half and putting it in a Gameboy shell feels like a waste, especially when it can't even play original GB/GBC games...
Too bad there isn't a hardware momentary switch to swap screen signals. Seems like the easiest route to get the screen swap but I'm sure there's more nuance to it being executed.
I hope he will add the top screen in the future this is what I'm hoping for it to be: it folds up above the bottom screen but when it folds down to the back of the DMG it can also turn so the screen will stay protected and when it is folded down it will seamlessly switch to the bottom screen and the top screen will be off and that way saving charge and maybe a button or a switch that can break the connection of resistor (I think it was a resistor sorry I forgot already) and then that way whole console can go into sleep mode and then obviously the hinges need to be incorporated into it yes 2 hinges but they will have to be on the opposite sides as it will be folding backwards instead of forwards (I wish I could be apart of these awesome projects and mods but I only have ideas I'm no good at any of the rest and because of that my dream will never come true)
That’s not a Game Boy anymore. That’s a Game Man! 💪🏻
You know it!

Ah, the Game Man. That is my father that you speak of :p

Sacrificing backwards gb/gbc compatibility and cannibalizing a ds makes this seem a tad silly
And I little sad.
Good if you want to salvage a broken DS though
hush your mouth... DMG is the best console and deserves this treatment.
I think the idea is that you use a DS with a missing/broken top screen and maybe a nonworking original gameboy, or an aftermarket shell.
@@Aeduo if it's salvage I'm all for it. But I've seen too many people destroy working systems for some project, and then not have the skills to finish it. And then trying again.

It’s a good use of a broken ds
But other than that yea
You must be new here because there's several of these "GBA Macro" style mods using a DS.
And also it can't play GB or GBC games, so it's objectively worse than a normal DMG in that regard lol
yeah im struggling to see the point of this lol @@BenWillock

@@AzureTheHero yeah... buy why not just play on a DS. only thing gained here is it sort of looks like a DMG

You might wanna change that thumbnail. I don't think a DS is capable of playing a Super Mario 64 romhack.
This looks so polished and professional, I would love to see a similar kit for the GBC-103
Which part of this is a DMG? Not exactly modifying anything. it's all new parts. Just made a DS look a bit like a DMG. This actually a DS mod.
Can’t wait to try this one! Loved the profile of the OG GB and this matches with it.
I want a 3DS XL that can play physical cartridges of Gameboy through
3DS games. That would be sick.
This takes the Gameboy Macro to a whole new level.
That level being at least several above the previous mod.
An improvement would be the stereo audio being routed through a left and right speaker.
