Well, as long as the mainboard is good, it's an ok price. Not great, but ok. The case and the screen can be replaced, the screen can even be upgraded to a backlit screen relatively cheaply.
I actually built a Gameboy like that on purpose 20 years ago. It was a lot more work than you can see in your video. I heated all the buttons and the screen until they fit and never used a grinding tool. I also made metal templates to shape the plastic with heat. I also made attachments for the soldering iron to shape each plastic part. For the hot air gun, I bent a nozzle to direct the hot air at a certain angle. Each part was treated individually and I made a lot of parts that ended up in the bin before I got a good result, but it was worth the money. I spent a lot of money on this project over three weeks. Making a burnt device is an art with a lot of patience and skill. You can take a fired piece and polish it up with a sander, or you can really work on it and make it a masterpiece. Well... You have chosen the first option, but there´s hope. You can do it! I believe in you. Really!
The second I saw the shell I was like that actually looks pretty cool I would leave it like that. My other thought was if this was a house fire this thing will have been drenched in water and the corrosion showed that to be the case. A lot of people don't realise the water often does about as much damage as the fire
The screen protector is a tough one. It seems like you need to make a clear template so that you can see/trace the screen position, and cut the protector with a Dremel. Then, finely sand and polish the protector edges for a better finish. You could also hit that inside area around the screen/case with some matte black lacquer to cover up the melting offset.
🎉😮 WOW, well done! I would just use a little black paint on the yellow showing around the screen if it bothers you that much. Good luck and you are lookin' good. 👍❤️😉
Exactly my thoughts on the paint. The other option would be to overlap your template over the top of the screen instead of the back and try to "center?" it over the screen, trying to cover all of the yellow with the protector. Going old school .. if you can find carbon paper!!!?!
I literally left this exact Gameboy color model outside on a camping trip with my family over 20 years ago. I remember bawling my eyes out to my parents that I lost it camping and got a new Gameboy Advanced that same year for Christmas, but I would imagine if anyone found that old Gameboy that it would look something like this. Hahaha I could only imagine if this was the exact one I had as a child.
You could try using a lighter or heat gun on the areas around the buttons to soften the edges after you file them away.. it'll give it that softer look like the rest of it has.
Reminded me of my gameboy color that I used when I was 14-15, and Im 35 now. I found it, put new batteries and pokemon silver in and it turned on immediately and works perfectly 😂 They don't make tech to last these days
They did a number on this! Gameboys are pretty tough. I would've been tempted to say screw it, and 3D Print a whole new front shell for it. There's probably even a pre-made template avalable.
Excellent first go at geting it usable! I woiuld suggest warming the shell up to push some parts of it back into place. That might help with the screen protector positioning. :)
Such a cool save! Was there a reason you didn't use a heat gun or something to try to flatten out some of the plastic? No idea if it would work, but may be worth a try.
Hi Steve, can you add to your Amazon store where you get the enameled wire you use to repair broken traces. I looked and I couldn't find it. Keep up the great work.
Might take a heatgun or hotsand to the replacement battery door before replacing, then make sure to keep a towel or pad pressed onto the cover while it cools. (If you just heat and replace it without pressure it may deform with all the stress against the clip vis even conformation.
I think this one had an aftermarket shell on... at the very beginning i can see a warranty seal on one of the screws wich were never used by nintendo back in the day, but i've seen them commonly from refurbished consoles from china with reproduction shells
Hi Steve, I love your videos, where do you buy your spare parts from? I can never seem to find things like original Gameboy replacement screens that aren't IPS
Likely salvaged from a house fire, before it caught fire itself. If it was on a table that's how it would melt, all the radiant heat from above before the fire engulfed the area it was in.
I personally think a glass screen would work easier, painters tape in a straight line, glass cutter and then bend, plastic for me is kind of a nightmare to shape and cut
Try to use some heat to straight some parts and use heat or fire to melt a little the screen protector for a realistic look. Do the same little burn for hols ❤of buttons .
Reminds me of my advanced I threw to close to the bonfire 😂 yup that guy also did the same 😢 but legit wish you just got a new top case as this is just to far gone 😅
I'm at 9:00 and I am screaming at the screen, "Use a heatgun to soften the top part and then put the screen protector in while it is soft so that it molds around it."
You could use a soldering iron to remodel the window for the screen protector, also heat it with a heating gun to rebend it to be mor flat before, excelent job besides that
That looks incredible, I would buy something like that just for the uniqueness. Great work as always.
Glad you see it! Sometimes we just go straight for making something like new again without appreciating the story it tells as it is.
I am surprised you paid $44 for this tbh. It’s always fun to see you repair these though
Well, as long as the mainboard is good, it's an ok price. Not great, but ok. The case and the screen can be replaced, the screen can even be upgraded to a backlit screen relatively cheaply.
@@MyRegardsToTheDodo Main board was in shite condition though
Someone tried to catch them all, and flew too close to the sun
😂😂
That Pokémon Trainer got burnt by a Charizard.

Lol!
@@baoboumusic yes! That’s basically my motto lol.
This is such a chaotic video. Only you would want to keep the melted shell lol
@@TheShadowBrigade no me too 😅
Honestly I was thinking the same. It looks horrible, and no, it is not a matter of "taste". Lol!
Huge fan of this channel.
you made one person happy
seller who got $44 for this device. That person had a really lovely day for sure 😂

Just need two slices of bread for an inedible grilled cheese... can't wait to see what happens.
You would almost think someone did some sort of durability test and put a torch to it. Poor thing
I wish I knew the story behind this.
@@Tronicsfix I'm willing to bet it was the survivor of a house fire
@@IanThatMetalBassistyeah that is house fire damage. It was laying face up on a table or desk.
This is the best restoration I've seen for ages. I'd love this Gameboy!

Yes! In my housefire PS5 videos I've seen a number of comments questioning why there is liquid damage.
I started learning to repair stuff thanks to you and your videos and just managed to fix a PS2! Thanks for teaching me your videos are the best
Love to hear it!
Oh god, I'm trying to eat my breakfast and that opening shot almost made me chuck my protein shake.
Lol, sorry about that.

@@Tronicsfix It's such a cool thing, totally worth the time. Amazing that you were able to make it work at all.
You need a DK oldies warranty sticker for it. 😂
Hahaha!
Certified tested, A+ condition
Lol! Funniest comment so far!
The fact that it still turned on is a testament of its time. Nintendium at its best.

Wish the melted buttons were usable but good job on this restore
It's amazing that it still worked! Great repurpose!
.... meanwhile, my new iPhone stopped working just from charging it...😂

Really cool repair! Looking forward to seeing your repair assessment on the Switch 2
Can't wait for that!
I think these new joycons and connectors are gonna break like crazy
It’s like that gameboy that survived a war or something they kept in the Nintendo store in New York forever lol
Damn that gameboy looked like it survived the Fukushima nuclear reactor disaster.
Ha, ha, it's pretty melted!
The most gangsta grilled cheese Gameboy on the planet! 👌🏼🔥😋🤣🤣
Cool that you tried to reuse the shell but if it was me I would have just fixed it up and put it in a new shell.
Absolutely insane, loved every minute of it.
Thank you! So glad you enjoyed.

27:25 Maybe putting in an IPS screen would make it look better, since you have to carve away the space under the screen protector.
I think painting the yellow peeking through the screen saver black would do the trick. Cool video!
Oh man.. someone is crazy enough like a passionate guy like you are, only buy one of this kind of console.
Lol
@Tronicsfix love you bro..lots of love from us all in India
Dude this is absurd. What an awesome skill.

Keep up the great work.
good job as usual, for yellow edges behind the screen protector, you could paint it in black
Poor gameboy
Yeah, it's been through some stuff
You should fix the case a little using a heat gun, the area of the speaker and the frame. Nice Job. 👍
Maybe some black vinyl under the screen protector to coverup/hide the yellow? This was a fun project.
Fantastic video as always. The perfect amount of entertainment. 👌
If this was mine i would just salvage the chips from the board and put them on a donor or 3d printed board then go to work with the case
You can mask it off and use black silicone where it didn’t fill it out completely and it will look better.
I was expecting you to replace the whole housing or at least the front, but good job.
Might take a heatgun or hotsand to the replacement battery door before replacing, then make sure to keep a towel or pad pressed onto the cover while it cools. (If you just heat and replace it without pressure it may deform with all the stress against the clip vis even conformation.

That front shell doesn't look original at all. The IR cover is also incorrect, I believe. Great job trying to fix it, though!
I had the exact gamebot when I was a kid, I want to buy one just to have it again.
I would this paint the yellow that's showing through the screen area black.
Try heatgun on plastic for better smooth surface and maybe in the speaker zone you can take up the plastic and look some much kind
$44 is an outrageous price for a melted gameboy. That just sucks.
It looks like a Flintstones GameBoy.
Love ur videos. ❤❤ Just want to buy products from ifixit. But they don't deliver here in india.
At this point, we might as well replace everything, even if it's annoying to see the state of this machine.
Reminds me of that Japanese repair technique, Kintsugi.
I wanna know the full story behind this
Me too!
Why not use a heat gun to reshape the screen?? And can you clean your work space as you work??
what did seller do try to cook it
Likely salvaged from a house fire, before it caught fire itself.
If it was on a table that's how it would melt, all the radiant heat from above before the fire engulfed the area it was in.
I'm surprised those batteries hadn't leaked, they appear to be from 2004?
I personally think a glass screen would work easier, painters tape in a straight line, glass cutter and then bend, plastic for me is kind of a nightmare to shape and cut
A sharpie can take care of the yellow around the display
Pokémon fire edition
Lol, that's a great name for it!
Pokemon: Charizard edition Gameboy 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Should have used a Dremel tool!
Try to use some heat to straight some parts and use heat or fire to melt a little the screen protector for a realistic look.

Awesome look 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩👍👍👍👍
Ten minutes in and he still did not get out the heat gun. It would be the first thing i would do.
The kind of Gameboy the kids in the creepypastas always find on yard sales, probably haunted.
Maybe you could use a magic marker to color the yellow plastc peeking around the screen Black?
Reminds me of my advanced I threw to close to the bonfire 😂 yup that guy also did the same 😢 but legit wish you just got a new top case as this is just to far gone 😅
Hardest button to button....
Lol
Could dremel the screen protector surface down flat
you could have tried hot air to reshape it instead of sanding it
It's the Charizard combat edition
I'm at 9:00 and I am screaming at the screen, "Use a heatgun to soften the top part and then put the screen protector in while it is soft so that it molds around it."
Just paint that inside area black, problem solved.
I did think about that. Probably shoulda done it.
I would have been tempted to put it in the oven and push the holes back into shape rather than grind.
You should have used you're hot air and manipulated the case itself
Ssssssmokin' good! 🔥
Cool if it was a red Pokémon version like charizard melted it
Hey bro... fire gameboy.
What necromancy is this?!
Jesus Christ... Why did You do that? 😭
Its interesting u want to keep the melted shell 😂, pretty sure it wont be comfortable playing on it
Looks like new👍
Melted cheese!

Gulf war Gameboys cousin
Pokemon cheeses
You got ripped off payed way too much for it

All i can think is you wanted a challenge. works great, but a new case should be on the shopping list.
Where you sell the repaired itens?
Use 3Dprint make a new one
Why would u buy this junk for 40 dollars , I think anything more than free is overpriced lol
I think it just looks a mess
But enjoyed the vid as usual
Why not replace the entire shell
I was all expecting him to do that, or at least the front housing.
