What camera do you think has the best design?
ALL MY LINKS: linktr.ee/mattgranger
For me, the best design is about how it feels when I hold it and use it. I've put a vertical grip on every 'second-tier' Nikon full frame digital camera [D700 --> Z8], but when I compared holding the Z9 and the Z8+grip, the Z9 felt so much better in both horizontal and vertical orientation, so I put down the extra $1100 and switched It is more comfortable than any of the others with the grip, and for me it feels better than the F5, D3, or D4 when I've had a chance to hold them. I expect it to be my main camera for the rest of the decade.
Leica q3. clean look.
Not bashing on Leica or any other luxury brand, but why do they get a free pass with terrible ergonomics and missing features while other more pedestrian brands get dinged over very trivial and subjective aspects of their design and features?
As a Pro I use Leica and Hasselblad and not Fuji or anything else - as for ergonomics - there are few cameras that fell comfortable - I use those brands becuase they have one button that does everything - ie take the picture - remember Japanese Hi-Fi systems from the 80's? Same thing - I drive a Kef LS60 instead for the same reason
Hasselblad 500 series with the Leica M6 a very very close second.
For the money I would buy the Z 400mm f/2.8 and maybe a backup Z8...
me too
Leica M10-p is so pretty. Sooooooo pretty!
I just bought a mint condition Nikon D700. It’s the most beautiful camera I didn’t know about. I had a Nikon D3 but wanted something smaller. I love the smaller feeling of the D700 but still has that tank feel. Of course the images are still amazing on this 12 mp camera. I wear glasses, the finder is more viewable than that of the D3. Which really helps in the experience of using the camera.
Nice! The D700 is arguably one of the top 2 most cherished DSLRs Nikon ever made!
That’s one good looking camera. For me Hassellad X2D 100C is a great looking camera and maybe mamiya rb67
Oh yeah. X2D is certainly the most beautiful, and functional and reasonably priced option on the market imo.
The box was lovely
Not my sort of camera, but someof the cars were ! nice vid Matt.
My all-time favourite camera to shoot with, and look at, is my YashicaMat LM TLR. I always say that it's every bit as good as the Rolleiflex it was fashioned upon, though I've never actually shot a Rolleiflex - not the 2.8, anyhow.
I would buy a digital TLR at the drop of a hat, provided it had all the same functionality, ergonomics, and quirks - e.g. the EVF would have to display images mirrored instead of all normal-like. TLRs are the best.
Original Leica Q. Have one for four years now. Love to use it. Love to look at it. For me its a design masterclass
Here are four of the most beautiful cameras (form and function) that I have seen. I actually owned the two titanium cameras and the graphite camera.
Leica Hammertone MP
Leica M6 titanium
Nikon F2 titanium
Fuji X-Pro2 graphite
The important question is….did you give that other camera, at the end, a new home?
I am still considering it :) That one was not for sale, but they have offered to get me another one :)
For me, Hasselblads are the most beautiful cameras.
As an overall brand, if we exclude the Luna and Stella, I’d totally agree 👍🏼
Between the shoot and the camera, pure fantasy. ;o) My two faves for form and function are my M9 and X2D.
Have you been to the Leica corporate store in NYC? I was there last week.... it's beautiful!!
Do you mean the boutique in soho that I showed in video?
Leica was smart to go to this limited edition market. Sometimes I wish we would do at least one feat like this at Phase. As this year is our 30th anniversary, maybe it would make sense. Anyway, for me the Phase One XF camera body is the one. I love how it sits in my hand, and its heft, and the functionality of that body. Design-wise I like its bold brutalist shape.
I also like the elegance of wooden view cameras. The Chamonix Alpinist is on top of the list in my opinion.
Great video
Lovely car, lovely camera. I want them both. ❤
I'm gonna go with "yes"😄 The regular one ain't bad either!
I see Leica, I flee. No one I’ve ever known in my life had one.
hasselblad 500cm silver / silver 80mm
Most beautiful camera ever is the Plaubel Makina 670, or Contax G2 in black. I'm quite fond of my Leica M6 TTL 0.85 as well.
The 65 year old M3 - Leica’s first M camera - that I recently purchased looks great and works as new. Question with digital cameras will be how electronics will hold up over time. Won’t affect their looks but functionality may be a question.
Electronic rot will get it sooner or later, no iffs or buts.
I enjoy my Leica M-D Typ 262 every time I hold it in my hands. No screen so almost no buttons - so unusual compared to modern cameras. The M11 is still tempting though…
brooo, your watch collection 😮
Nice Oak M8!
Cheers - matches the cam :)
I love it
While this is beyond my means, or more to the point, what I choose to spend on cameras, I can see that it is a very beautiful camera as you state. I did not really need to add that qualifier about what I would spend as the decision to buy something like this is entirely personal. It is none of my business. All this being said, while the camera may have appreciated in price, there is still a cost. One element of that cost of course is inflation. That the camera is roughly the same price now as it was at launch does not take into account inflation. As well, and this cost is not often talked about, there is a lost opportunity cost. The value of the money that would have paid for this camera when the camera was first issued, if invested with some success, would likely be higher and would take into account inflation as well as allow for some profit.
Thanks for posting this video.
Great points. As a trained economist, I agree 👍🏼
@@mattgranger I am slowly working my way through some courses I bought from you and I am looking forward to the Business of Photography. Clearly, you bring a lot to the table in any of the topics you talk about in your vids. I appreciate it.
@@vinyalonde Thank you mate! I always value feedback and testimonials. Please shoot me an email if you care to share some feedback.
I would use a wrist strap rather than the longer sling
This will prevent the inevitable rubbing on the sides
I prefer function over form
Hasselblad, Leica, and Fuji 100 series are best looking. What are the main differences between Leica Q3 and 10 or - Leica M11-P?
There’s many differences, the main one being the Q3 has an EVF, a fixed lens, and autofocus, the M10 and M11 have OVFs, interchangeable lenses, and are manual focus only. Beyond that you’ll have to read about the specs and features in a more fitting place.
Hey Matt. For me, art's purpose IS to be looked at. A camera's purpose is to make photos. Possibly of art. If a camera were art there'd be no point making it usable as a camera. Like you, I'm for using it for its intended purpose. My thoughts turn to events I go to at nearby Goodwood where, typically, old - and often very valuable - cars race each other. These, too, are beautiful machines worthy of admiration and collection. But, despite the huge value at risk, owners choose to hammer them around the track at full chat, occasionally getting a little expensively friendly with a dirt bank, hay bale or tyre wall. Quite right, too. They are, 1st and 4most, racing cars.
It is fun to imagine if I had won the 1.3 billion dollar Powerball lottery last week what I would need. I don't think that Leica would be on the list. A Nikon S style rangefinder (all of them) would definitely be in my collection.
Olympus OM 1 and Fuji x pro 3
As much a work of art as a camera. Matt you're looking quite stylish with the Leica rangefinder and gorgeous timepiece.
Olympus EM1.3 is the pinnacle of the camera design. It is a shame they lost their name.
It’s the Nikon 35Ti for me. Still looks incredibly handsome even in 2024.
Agree. I like the 28ti even more 👍🏼
Great video and breakdown on the Zagato Leica. Between this and the Hermes Leica M9-P as well as the Hammertone MP. Probably my top 3 favourite Leicas.
LSK Camera also have the Hermes kit in stock
In the spirit of the car analogy. If I would have all the money I could wish for, I would pay someone to take the body of a Werra 1, equip it with a M-Mount and Auto-focus and auto-exposure capabilities.
It would be embarrassing for me to walk out of front door with something looking like that (in spite being able to purchase it).
Rolleiflex SL66. Contax G2
“I have enough money to last me the rest of my life, unless I buy something.” If it makes you feel good and you can afford it why not 😂
😂😂fair point. For me - and I guess true of everyone, no matter your financial means - there’s still a trade off and prioritization… and $25,000 is a lot of money (for me) to convert to aluminum, & put on a shelf. Maybe one day :)
I think regular Leica cameras are already already at ‘work of art’ prices for what you get. With that one they’ve doubled down!
I can’t imagine any leica digital camera holding its value over time very well. Being digital, it’s like a computer and it becomes obsolete tech over time. This camera isn’t about the tech so much so maybe I’m wrong?
I think if they had made a special edition Leica M6 film camera that might have been a better idea. 😋
That's a work of art, you're absolutely right in saying that.
So, if people can buy expensive art like paintings for really crazy money - this camera actually makes sense in that regard.
I take the Lumix LX100 and paint it white.
In a world now where wealth distribution is so stacked toward the wealthy few, and the large majority of families ( here in Australia), can now barely afford their mortgages or to put food on the table for their kids, this camera is an affront to the decent majority. I'll be sticking with my two wonderful Z6ii's (I even feel guilty owning those), ha ha!
I hear what you mean - but you may be overstating it to say 'the large majority' of Australian families can barely afford to feed their kids...
@@mattgranger Hi Matt - I know you've lived outside of Auss for a few yrs (I know you have family here), and perhaps you are not aware of the rental and housing crisis. Perhaps I did exaggerate somewhat but in WA where I live, houses have gone up 21% in one year and rental availability is 0.7%. There are so many people hurting and a trip into the city on evenings is terrible to see all the homeless in parks and doorways (it never used to be like that). I wasn't poking a big stick at Leica, I'm just as guilty with my freehold house, lovely comfortable lifestyle and a new camera and toys whenever I want it.
the most beautiful cameras m9 and m10-p in black
Hasselblad X2D 100C
At first I thought you had bought it. 🙂
No hot shoe = incomplete.
Fair point. I wonder how many Leica M users ever mount a flash?? 🤔
For my own taste,I prefer EPSON RD-1
Certainly a cool old camera.
I think a Rolleiflex 2.8 is the prettiest camera of all time
I love the look of the lens. But for me personally it has a feminine look I don’t like with the camera.
Zorki 4, is that you? lol
I pick Olympus PEN F ... more fun, less ego, vintage? yes, modern ? Of course, afordable for someone like me. But end of the day ... the man behind the gun ... that more importen
Leica - Still taking the piss in 2024 !!
It is a lovely camera. But at that price, I'd spend all my time worrying about damaging it. It does remind me of what science fiction movies used to imagine futuristic cameras would look like, All metallic and compact. I guess they weren't far off. Go back to 1960 and tell people the tiny card in your hand can store thousands of images. They'd think you were crazy. Or a genius. Good luck with the lottery. 😀
"Barely any frames taken"
Sell that AP and get the Leica 👍🏻👍🏻😂
Nahhh
@@mattgranger😂😂😂 yeah I wouldn’t either. Lovely watch that mate. I’ve noticed your watches before. Think you may of had a Subby at one point? Remember you having some nice ones anyway. Good on you! 👍🏻
Stunning, if it was a film camera edition it would be tempting. The digital rot makes it less desirable as an investment.
no
That camera strap pretty much ruins the whole thing! Ugh.
😆 less than dropping it would
Omg so damn poisoning video.
Id not carry it, too feminine.
Looks good not great
The one that makes the best pictures is the best camera, this isnt a camera, its a trinket for people with more money than sense.
The video isn't titled 'the Best camera'...
Delete your post son you've had a mare.
@@mattgranger beauty is in purpose, not from.
If they have enough money, why insult them about not having sense?
Which camera makes the best pictures?
To me it looks like a very predictable, even ugly design. In no way a product of thorouwly explored original creativity
Predictable in what way?
@@mattgranger In the way that exclusive car desigbers would dress up a camera. The video is nice Matt
