Such a great song. I know there was friction between Dave and Mike, but I think Dave was the underrated member of the band. His guitar work on this song is beautiful. Listen between 2:13 - 2:38; just incredible. In any case The Alarm were great, and should have been huge!

They toured with U2 jun their early days so of course it would make sense. They are good friends.
Their first tours were with U2 I believe in 1981 so yes, they knew them very well.
