Lyrics:
Hello, darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence
In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence
And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
And no one dare
Disturb the sound of silence
"Fools," said I, ""You do not know
Silence, like a cancer, grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you""
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said
"The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls
And whispered in the sound
Of silence"

I am 82 years old and a fan of the S&G version, but I am totally overwhelmed by Disturbed's cover. It is fascinating, mesmerizing, and I simply can't get enough of experiencing the emotion.
This is what great music is all about. World class.
Dennis ❤️
@@wish21100 ?
thats because youve seen so many things in your life and it brings back memories
And great music is also about, and always has been, musicians taking inspiration from one another and building on each other's creativity.
I am middle aged and love the original but I couldn't agree more - this version makes me want to laugh and cry at the same time
Disturbed, When this came out I was homeless, on drugs, and then jail. I now have a house, job, and husband. This song and “Clover Cage - In the Moment” are the two songs that helped get rid of my depression. I just want to send love to everyone and I want everyone to know things will get better. We are in this together..I love you 💕
My family just used this for my Father's funeral. He loved this version so much, even at 84. So powerful.
Sorry for your loss
Siento mucho su pérdida 😢😢
May he rest in peace.
I’m sure he would have been overwhelmed
Had this played at my daughter's funeral two years this May she loved this version of it she was just 52 years of age went to bed didn't wake up from her sleep .😢💔
his voice is so powerful
... and live!

My dad used to play the original when i was little. He's 82 now and when i go back home he's playing Disturbed cover on full blast! He loves it.
I think it may be full blast because his hearing is lacking
Nothing wrong with his faculties! Just loves it. My mum says "The sound of silence is deafening" what a quote ha ha.
Gold you sound like the old man. if it's too loud you are too old.
Love it Bryan !
Your dad is awesome and this song is awesome!
My 91 yr old father was just humming this. Guess I’m on repeat for the next few hours. Thanks dad
My Dad passed away a few weeks ago. He raised me on oldschool rock, a big fan of the 60s and 70s. This cover always resonated with him, and he played it all the time. He loved it so much more than the original that we played it at his service. I don't have words for how I feel right now, but to Disturbed I would just like to say thank you for this cover. It ended up being so important to my family...
May your father Rest in Peace! best wishes for you and your whole family!
Not a huge fan of disturbed. Like a few of their songs, but most of them felt generic over the years, but holy crap this blew me away. Glad to see that he gave the song the respect it deserves, while still making it his own.

I have listen to the others that have made their version
of this song and there is no one that can match the way you can sing it. thank you for the remake I think it is great

+Mathew Haight This one is a cover, maybe that's why It doesn't sound generic to you?
my mom loved this version. She had to hear it everyday. she was battling Parkinsons and Dementia. She had gotten very weak and bed ridden, but we still played this for her at least once a day until the day she passed . It was playing during her final breath. I miss you mom!!

I'm a little old lady and this is my favorite version of Sound of Silence.
I love this version too
I’m 64 and have never heard of Disturbed but loved this song from the 60’s…
This man really understood the message and WOW!
His rendition gets to the place deep within my soul….
It’s a connection that transcends time…
Sometimes I believe it’s a universal truth that is shared by all who have been there….even tho the experience may differ….the place it takes each person is the same…..
I love this ❤
Hello Nancy, how are you doing today, hope you’re fine and safe from the COVID-19 virus??
I don't understand why everyone makes a big deal on where they came from. who cares where you heard it. it's all about loving a truly great remake of a beautiful song and disturbed deserves all the respect and recognition.

This song transports me into the heart and mind of those on the fringe of society, forgotten but still with us, seen but never noticed, hurting but never comforted. It's truly humbling.
Beautifully said Brother 🙏
It's a "sad" thing to say; but, it's so true. Thank you, for saying what couldn't find the words to say myself. Gotta love you Bro...!!!
What are you going to do about that ?
And do you care enough to do ?
Maybe those who dont " fit" into society clubs are meant for a HIGHER purpose and they are alone because they understand society for what it TRULY is.❤

A splendid, timeless song! How many here to listen to it in 2024?

And me. The best.
This song is better...serious...
Ditto
From Wikipedia: "Garfunkel once summed up the song's meaning as "the inability of people to communicate with each other, not particularly internationally but especially emotionally, so what you see around you are people unable to love each other.""---That sounds a lot like where we are right now.
.
Maybe. But just because one person isn't connected to their feelings doesn't = we ALL have his impediment. Garfunkel was an odd guy at times, like all of us. I'm a realist. I think that sociopaths have taken over by promising the lie of immortality (religion) which they neither understand nor care about. There are still principled people out there who aren't sociopaths--- they're codependents- lol.
I laugh, but I'm serious. Codependents are those trying to understand why the sociopath is pushing a blade through their heart. "They must have a good reason to do this", and, "what happens to me doesn't matter as long as I please this random sociopath". Or, something....The issue is that sociopaths don't react better if you're kind to them. In fact, it might be worse. Liars believe everyone is lying. Thieves believe everyone is going to steal from them.
If you're kind to them, they will immediately go on high-alert! "No one is nice unless they want something or are lying"!
Better to just take control. At their core, they're weak, angry, emotionless, and have terrible self esteem which leads to liking to torture others in whatever way they can. Not the sort you want in charge of other people, wouldn't you say??

Two months ago I happened upon Disturbed doing The Sound of Silence.I'm 60 years old and had never before heard of Disturbed, but after hearing David's most awesome rendition, I fell in love with that soul-grabbing voice and am now a devoted fan of everything he does. Thanks David for bringing up some ghosts from my far past and making them even better. You have captured my imagination again.
David K. I am a 55 year old 'Metal Grandma' who has been a Disturbed fan for many years! Then this song came out & I am also 'in love' with David's powerful & SOULFUL voice! Today I see a new video from the same album/CD called Open Your Eyes & the comments are so very misguided! It's also a great tune to wake up with! Strap on the headphones & enjoy friend. Shalom.
I don't know why, but your comment gave me the feels ❤️
I'm 15 years old, I have loved any form of Rock for most of my life. I despise the sound of Rap and Hip-Hop, But this song is probably my new #1 song. The original following very closely.
My dad is 58 and while hard rock isn't out there for him he doesn't really listen to the new stuff. more old school. ozzy, Aerosmith ect. he bought the cd JUST for this song lol. he had us all in his radio room just so he show us the video and listen to the song on his speakers lol said my phone did it no justice lol
He has an amazing voice for sure. Everyone has their own interpretation of the lyrics, I'm on board with David Draiman as far as this darker vocalization. The Simon and Garfunkel beat should be with some lyrics about how two young lovers reunite. The harmony and bounce of it would at least match the lyrics better. All personal opinion though. To each their own.
This man's range is incredible. Played at my cousin's funeral yesterday and brought tears to everyone. So touching.
My husband passed away in janu.
He had the most beautiful voice.
Today i lit a candle and played this song for him.
I played this song to my grandad when it first came out a couple of weeks before he died and he cried. Ive never saw him cry before, my nana said it was the first time since after the WW2. Died at the age of 102, love you grandad.
Edit: I was contemplating if i should even write this as the aim of this comment wasn't likes (clearly), however i feel the need to say thankyou everyone who had liked this comment- like seriously nearly 300, wow. But more importantly thankyou everyone who left kind comments wishing me well and keeping my spirits up. Youre all amazing and i hope you have a great day/night dependi g on where you are in the world.

This is the most beautiful rendition of this song I've ever heard. SO much more intensity and feeling than the 'gentle' original..
paul greenwood being honest I prefer the original.
It's just a matter of taste. The message itself, instead of original or a cover, is beautifull. And there it's end at the songwriter. Songs like this...is just a tribute in my eyes.

I don't disagree with you, but the original was also awesome. There are a LOT of covers floating around and I find this one I would put on my playlist, whilst most others I would not bother with.

IAM 75 yrs old love this song over the years this gentleman can really do the song justed what a voice can't stop hearing him singing it totally awesome 💯👍
I am listening and I just came back from seeing my older sister who is dying. This is the song she wants played at her funeral. It just breaks my heart whenever I hear.
Garfunkel once said the song is about "the inability of people to communicate with each other, not particularly intentionally but especially emotionally, so what you see around you are people unable to love each other." This is such a profound rendition of this song. Listened to it over and over again and feeling the pain right now in my daily life. God speed to those who feel alone and unable to talk to others.
In a world that's increasing divided, and specifically isolated by the pandemic, the message about people unable to connect to each other and understand each others minds is especially true.
You've said it all!
So true. God, may You show us the need to love each other closely, and appreciate community!
In this day and age of technology, I see the masses gathering and saying, but not listening.
Posting replies is now the norm of "communication", disturbingly so, as the song implies...
"We" (all of mankind online) are loosing touch with what is actual communication, aka give and take, listening and reciprocation of the verbal, the total digestion of and integration of the information from the individual.
If we do not return to a form of personalized and intimate interactions, then we might as well not bother with such things as "individual rights".
Why bother speaking out if no one is willing to listen, why bother with speaking up if no one is going to reply.
I am referring to the "online communication" specifically, as the simplistic approach of it is actually quite damning and very much NOT truly communicating... like watching a movie and declaring a feeling of connection to the characters. True as it may be, still only a placebo to the real thing. An illusion of, but not to replace... just as a written sentence carries not the intricacies of nuance in spoken, all online is but a farce to what is really happening.
Virus or not, this isolation predates, and is far more prevalent than just a few years worth.
Artists have seen it coming for a long time, the signs ignored all the same...
...if anyone has read this far, I give you my hope, I give you my praise, and I have faith that you will take from this how truly precious another's time truly is.
Don't cry, I will handle that part.
Smile and let them know how you feel about their times with you!
What a voice! Thank you for the info on the song.

This version of Simon and Garfunkel's song echoes the times in which we now find ourselves... Dark, disturbing and full of rage.

If it's okay with you, I'd love to be friends.
Which is why Disturbed's version is so perfect. Unbelievable!
If you like THIS version...go find the one from Conan O'Brian's talk show. If at all possible, play it through a really good sound system...one that'll rattle your bones a little. I simply can not get past that first lift without sobbing uncontrollably. Very few pieces of music can do that to me. I'm not going to do it tonight, because I've had a long day and, truthfully, it's a bit exhausting to listen to and watch. But, damn, when I need an emotional cleanse...David Draiman, on that night, sick as a dog with a high fever, (as the legend goes) threw a performance that belongs upon Mount Olympus...but it was given to us mere mortals!

Gilmer Monk Its really shit. The voice doesn't fit and there is way too much sound going on.
this is trash
I'm 62 years old. I had become a Disturbed fan with Down with the Sickness and Paul Simon had been my main man since I was 10. I was so effing ecstatic when you covered this fantastic Simon and Garfunkel song!
Agreed. 100%
Same here. My dad always played Simon and Garfunkel and collected Paul Simon's work there after. Always my fav then in my teens I discover Disturbed and just fell in love with their sound then they do this song..Fell over the moon with this one. I love love love this song💖💖💖💖
I read that Paul Simon was really pleased with this cover. It's amazing!
Grace KELLY
This man’s voice is just dynamic
Essa música The Sound Of Silence é uma obra prima um clássico do Disturbed
He sings so angrily but yet so beautifully
Never thought I would see him do something like this. Even though I don't usually like songs like this. I find this so addictive. The lyrics are just awesome.
You can literally feel the pain he sings with.
+Nathan Watson Sports definitively a beautiful cover of the original Simon and Garfunkel song.
You're prettyyyyy
You know it brotha
he doesn't just know the lyrics , he understands them.
+IamZeus1100 He captures the strength of the message doesn't he. You can practically see the entire world standing listlessly with no inner motivation as slaves to the age and modernism silently allowing themselves to be led on after hearing this rendition. Of course, not everyone hears the same interpretation to this song. But that's what makes it a work of art though doesn't it?
+IamZeus1100 I work in customer service at a corner store and after watching people throwing their weeks pay at a system built to steal their livelihood, I have to say this music really speaks to me. Don't ever support the lottery guys. It's the most depressingly broken thing in society and the amount of people it snares is sickening. There is a good reason why the poor people spend the most on it.
I closed my eyes while listening to the song. wow, that's so powerful, isn't it?
+Jeremy Curpen yes yes it is
yes man yes
It is so rare that a cover magnifies the original and even in this extremely rare case, surpasses it!
Thank you Disturbed, thank so much for this prowess.
Disturbed.. totally under rated.. I don't normally like covers, but this, OMG.. best cover ever.. well done you..
This song is due to be played at my mums funeral, as she loved the Simon and garfunkel version, I played this for her, 3 days later she passed, she fell in love instantly with this version, so a fitting send off, rest well mum, 1967-2022 x
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Lost my mom a couple of years ago, sorry for your loss!
😭🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Hey man hope you’re doing okay , I know how dark it feels , I know the pain you feel but please know everything will be okay. I was 12 when I lost my mom and I still battle that pain everyday , you lose more than a mother , you lose apart of yourself so just know if I made it through so will you :)
Fuck man, i hope you're doing well. My mom was born 1968 and passed away on christmas, I never got to play her this song. Stay strong brother.
David has a demon's and an angel's voice at the same time
So very true as well as rare
Underrated singer. Sad that some of these artists with beautiful voices will never be heard.
Probably because demons were once angels
...as we all do...🖤
Stolen comment from deeper in this comment section. Bitchass
Last song I heard with my father. Crippled and silent, i was alone with him for the last time that night. RIP
Less than 10 million views to go to break 1 billion, lets speed it up guys!!
His range in the growl notes is unreal. Chills every time.
Totally agree! His voice is amazing and this is my favorite version this song.
His voice is why I love this song even more.
@@spiritwolf3103 it's so beautiful and powerful
Only chills what the heck
What do you mean just chill or what she was like one close one step closer to your grave or what
It's 2023 and it's still a masterpiece! It never goes out of style. Years later and it's still one of the best songs ever written.
It was originally released in 1964 by Simon and Garfunkel, they were absolute masters of their time.
Je confirme.Cette chanson est magnifique et la voix est parfaite👍👏👏
I've always listen to this when I was 9 I'm 13
Same still listening this 2023
@@ivyivee1042 I heard it when I was 21 .....now I'm 80 . This version, with the great voice , emotion and video brings an awesome dimension to Pauls song . Bravo !
Soon 1 billion, let's continue sharing this masterclass 🙏🏿
It’s 3:31 pm April 25th 2024 and I’m listening to this song in my hotel room in Sweden.
👋
❤
Paul Simon who wrote this song (and who wrote all the songs-lyrics and music for Simon & Garfunkel) apparently saw Disturbed performing this song on a late night show and contacted the band saying he was very impressed by their "powerful " performance of this song.
I remember he told disturbed once that "this was his song now, not mine"
@JamesRichmond yeah and David was crying it got emotional
I think that most artists don't get upset, when they see another band doing one of their old songs. If anything, it should be flattering to know that your message is still relevant, even if the actual way it is sung, gets updated to a more modern beat and rhythm. In most cases, it is easily recognizable as derived from the original, with many of the basic patterns of notes and melodies being maintained, if slightly altered in tempo and range. This song is a perfect example of that and it goes to show, that another artists vision of the song, can even improve it, from the point of view of the younger generation and sometimes, even the original generation of listeners. However, there will always be those who prefer the original. I like both versions, but Disturbed's version is better, in my opinion. I think the power of the voice behind the message is what Paul recognized. The message was given strength.
Trent Reznor from NIN said the same thing to Johnny Cash about the song "Hurt." At first Reznor was a little put out because of how personal the song was to him but after he heard Cash sing it and saw his video for it he told him this is no longer my song it's yours.
Nowadays , nobody can just cover a song in a late night show without asking the copyright question .
This story seems a bit constructed ...
I decide this song to the love of my life, Helen Williams, who lost her life to covid beginning of December, god bless you xxxx
So sorry for your loss brother god bless you .
Rest in peace Helen she’s looking down on you brother
sorry for your loss man, may she rest in peace
Covid dont exist. They fabricated a massive plandemic in 2019 of October called event 201. 4 months later on the us news they claim someone died, learn about pshycological military warfare. Your all being played... the mask wearing is a Iniation into the new system.
So sorry to hear bro. Hope things get better, god bless man🙏🏻
There's only one kind of person who could write this kind of song. And only a certain kind of person can perform it. The angst is real. Masterful!
Hello Miriam, how are you doing today, hope you’re fine and safe from the COVID-19 virus??
I wanted to add a comment on what this means to me but I don’t have the words to truly convey the power of this music.
Wish I could thank you enough for the pleasure u guys gave my husband in his last moments of life he insisted that he listened to u as he took his last breath so from the bottom of my heart thank you guys x

Goosebumps on 25 April 2024 officially.
once a wise man said:
"when you're happy you enjoy the melody but, when you're broken you understand the lyrics".
Is that the truth... Totally agree 💯👍💜😁😇
Who said that? That’s very profound
That's brilliant and so true.
True that
So deep and so true
Love how the classic old songs keep returning.
The old songs never left. They are there, forever, for you to listen to. What a stupid statement.
technically they ain't this generation barely know they exist
I believe he's referring to how they return to popularity despite all the new stuff that's constantly being released. Not a stupid comment.
***** some real old songs are starting to come back into circulation but as i said this generation think they know music when they don't like what they think is "ROCK" isn't actually ROCK theres a YT channel called the combat veteran he does a video skit exactly like it where his friend gets into his car and puts on "ROCK" look it up.
I agree this generation lacks an appreciation of good music, but genres evolve over time; there are many sub-genres of rock that you may not like but that doesn't mean they're not rock. They might not be a classic rock and roll band, but they still fall under the category of rock because they belong to a sub-genre of it. Unless of course you're talking about genres that are completely separate from rock, in which case I'd agree.
I can't get enough of this song, so pure and beautiful, powerful, aggressive in just the exact right way.
as a kid i did not realized how deep is this song
Man, I had no idea that Howie Mandel was the lead singer of Disturbed. What a talented fellow.
lmao same
What
***** you're a dumbass
I was thinking Kevin Pollak but Howie is more accurate... and funnier.
props
