"Hello darkness my old friend, I've come to talk with you again" i was clean off meth for 9 months, but decided to relapse, and was driving to the "plug's" house. I listened to this song on the way there, and somehow, those words alone made me decide to turn around and go home. Ive remained sober, going on 6 years of sobriety now.
Congratulations. Very proud of you. I have a nephew who is an addict. He was high or drunk for 10+ years, starting at 14-15 years old. He's been in a treatment program for 2 years now and is FINALLY clean and sober. He has been through hell. I'm sure you have too. Keep up the sobriety, my friend. God has big plans for you.
I'm not sure if you guys read these, but just in case, I'm 71 years old, I was about 13 or 14 when Paul Simon wrote this song and it's always been a favorite. When I heard Ya'll "Disturbed" do this cover, I actually had goose bumps from head to toe. by the time it got to the end ,I had tears in my eyes. You "Disturbed" have brought a great deal of justice to this great hit, and will carry it's legacy for many, many years. Out of the millions of views of this video, I'm sure at least 1000 are mine. The words to the song, mean as much or more now than when written, so many years ago. Even though I'm not a Metal fan, I will always cherish your version. To say this old man is obsessed with this cover, would be a gross understatement, Carry on, and God Bless ya, and THANK YOU, from a Fan, In Tennessee.
@StjDUK, it's like Paul Simon was saying "man this song was written and waiting for you to sing it. I see that this version has one-billion, (1 billion) views...WOW!!!

I am 61 years old, and for as long as I can remember, I have loved Simon & Garfunkel’s The Sound of Silence. The message within the song is so piercing, so profound-but Art Garfunkel’s ethereal voice softened its edges, veiling the darkness of the lyrics with its fragile beauty. And then came Disturbed’s version, with David Draiman’s raw, soul-shattering voice. It strips away that veil, laying bare the despair, the urgency, the haunting truth of the words. It is as if the song awakens from a dream, no longer soothing, but demanding to be felt. Every time I hear it, tears overwhelm me. I cry like a child-uncontrollably, from a place deep within my soul. There is no other song like it, no other melody that carries such weight, such anguish, such reckoning. What have we done? What have we become? The song doesn’t merely ask-it accuses, it mourns, it weeps for us all. This song will echo through the halls of my funeral one day. Of that, I am certain. It is not just a song; it is a monument, a mirror to the darkness we have created. And yet, even in its despair, it is achingly beautiful-a requiem for the silence we all failed to hear.
Perfectly stated. As I just watched the news about the nominated, grossly unqualified, defense secretary. Then listen to this song. I worry for the young people who aren't aware of just how off track we as a nation we have gone. This song sums it all up. I remember when I first heard this version. It was played as images of the aftermath of 9/11 were shown. Now it warns of our destruction from wirhin!
I constantly struggle with my mental health and this song reminds me that so many suffer in silence. Remember, you are not alone, we all walk beside you.
Hello so sad to read that , don't know you, but here.s my advice from my heart, whenever you start struggling on it, THINK STRONGLY that u don't need that f......problem, think strongly that the only cure , medicine and solution is YOU , do not use pills , use your internal and mental power, think strongly that everything is fine, WHEN I SAY STRONGLY I REALLY MEAN IT, believe me , with faith in God ( if you are a believer ) or FAITH IN YOU ! you can turn a difficult moment into a wining moment , NO MATTER WHAT OR WHERE, YOU ARE THE SOLUTION FOR YOURSELF, do something different or fun in that moment, don't let that something that does not exist , can go over you, your positive mental power is stronger than bullshit created for your weak side of brain, So if u are a winner, no more mental weakness will come . BELIEVE ME , BUT MOST IMPORTANT , BELIEVE IN YOU ! easy.... a big hug !
I’m a pastor and I was driving in my truck listening to the sounds of silence and was overwhelmed by the Holy Spirit and broke into worship ! I had to pull my truck off of the road to be safe and continued to worship until the song ended. I did not know they were a heavy metal band because it was on a top 40 style radio station. I called my senior leader in our denomination and testified of what the Holy Spirit did while I worshipped. He agreed it is a very powerful song. I believe David is authentic in his heart and is a bridge from the gratifications of the flesh to the freedom of the Spirit. I think David has caught a revelation of the word of God that many Christians have missed. The heart of God for the hidden, the forgotten, the lost and the broken ! Can we all pray that God touches David with a Damascus Rd experience for the coming outpouring of God that will sweep this generation into God’s kingdom with a revival of which we have never seen before Jesus returns. Pray ! I hope some day I have the privilege of speaking with him or meeting David !
Oh my word... you are just getting all emotional due to the music.. the words describe hell more than anything... no redemption anyway in the song, and the Holy spirit points to Chris, and there was no pointing to Chris that i'm aware of???
The following verse... And in the naked light, I saw Ten thousand people, maybe more People talking without speaking People hearing without listening People writing songs that voices never shared And no one dared Disturb the sound of silence The verse makes me think of today with people doing nothing but their heads down texting on their phones, "talking without speaking, hearing without listening". Then with all the violence in public places, this could be the future... "People writing songs that voices never shared, And no one dared" I have been around awhile, grew up in the 60s, and watched what has become. It is very sad. This song, to me, explains what we have become (and becoming) as a people. A great song that hits the heart. Thanks Paul and David.
The soog can also represent the build of inner fire to the injustices, the abuse, and silent struggle with a system that does not value love and compassion. No one dare break the silence less the strength, the resolve should break. There is always the darkest hour before the dawn. Makind is moving through the darkest hour as we discover the truth of corruption in all it's levels, but in doing so we are bringing it to the light and in the end we will break free to a new dawn.
That's it. It's the cold heartless and lost souls who need compassion the most desperately need. We're all bleeding red. We need to come together and unite as humans 😢😢

Experienced. That is the only word to describe hearing this song. You don’t “listen” to it. You don’t dance to it. You EXPERIENCE it. S&G gave us the poetry, David Draiman gave us the warning.

I lost my elderly mum just over 4 months ago. I used to play music to her regularly of which she loved this song by Disturbed. She was 92 yrs old and had vascular dementia. Makes me cry when I hear this song but I know she is around in love and spirit.
If she was 92 years old I can tell you right the fuck now, she did not like the that group of players. Simon and Garfunkel was who played this song. Not that shit crap remake of garbage
so very sorry for your loss. I lost my mum 2 years ago and it's as fresh today as it has ever been. Think of the happiness your mum felt in those moments you shared, let that joy into your heart and feel the happiness she must have experienced. You gave her that.
David may never really know how beautiful and powerful his voice is. This version brought meaning to the song, I lost my sister to cancer, may God bless those who have fought, lost and won the victory of this dreaded disease.
The Sound of Silence Hello darkness, my old friend I've come to talk with you again Because a vision softly creeping Left its seeds while I was sleeping And the vision that was planted in my brain Still remains Within the sound of silence In restless dreams, I walked alone Narrow streets of cobblestone 'Neath the halo of a street lamp I turned my collar to the cold and damp When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light That split the night And touched the sound of silence And in the naked light, I saw Ten thousand people, maybe more People talking without speaking People hearing without listening People writing songs that voices never shared And no one dared Disturb the sound of silence "Fools" said I, "You do not know Silence like a cancer grows Hear my words that I might teach you Take my arms that I might reach you" But my words, like silent raindrops fell And echoed in the wells of silence And the people bowed and prayed To the neon god they made And the sign flashed out its warning In the words that it was forming Then the sign said, "The words on the prophets are written on the subway walls In tenement halls" And whispered in the sound of silence

This version of Simon and Garfunkel's song echoes the times in which we now find ourselves... Dark, disturbing and full of rage. I love David's voice, absolutely flawless.
I'll respect your privacy, Pardon me for writing in your comment am impressed by your personality. I admire your kind demeanour. I mean It's quite impressive the way you expressed yourself, and I can tell you are an easygoing person someone worth spending time with. sorry if this sounds weird, but I can tell you're a very positive person. If it's okay with you, I'd love to be friends.
If you like THIS version...go find the one from Conan O'Brian's talk show. If at all possible, play it through a really good sound system...one that'll rattle your bones a little. I simply can not get past that first lift without sobbing uncontrollably. Very few pieces of music can do that to me. I'm not going to do it tonight, because I've had a long day and, truthfully, it's a bit exhausting to listen to and watch. But, damn, when I need an emotional cleanse...David Draiman, on that night, sick as a dog with a high fever, (as the legend goes) threw a performance that belongs upon Mount Olympus...but it was given to us mere mortals!

And my dad was drafted when he was 35 years old and had a heart attack during the blitzgred in London that partly disabled him. I wish you more peace over the years take care brother thank you
His voice is so incredibly soft and powerful at the same time. I remember when I first heard this version on the morning radio. It was a couple of months after my father's sudden death. My dad had been a Simon and Garfunkel fan. I listened to this cover and had to pull to the side of the road as I was bawling my eyes out. It was cathartic. Thank you for helping me grieve with this song.
Sorry for your lose! Live every day like dad is behind you, and make him proud because of you. I can't even imagine to lose someone from my close family, but I am fightting with my own... because I don't have time for them and I know I will regret once.

I’ll be honest. When I first heard that Disturbed made a cover of this song, I was highly sceptical. I love Disturbed, but hearing that they were doing a song by Simon and Garfunkel left me thinking that they were going to end up butchering the original. But then I went in and listened to this song and, let me just say, I was blown away. I’ve now heard this song more times than I can count and everytime I hear it, it’s just as amazing as when I first heard it. I will always love Disturbed, regardless of what other people say.
Couldn't agree more! I usually hate covers, along with movie remakes. This is the exception! There is so much power and depth, so much more than the original. I'm old, remember the lyrics to most S&G songs lol. Hate to admit that I prefer this but I do! Listen to it 2 or 3 times daily lol. Amazing voice and the video is wonderfully dark, just perfect
When this came out I was broken, lost, unhealthy and in and out of jail. Now I have a house, a husband, and a good job. This song and "Clover Cage - Stand Up For My Country" are the two songs that helped with my depression. I just want everyone to know things do get better. We are in this together. I love you 💕

Wow, this is astonishly powerful. I've been a hardcore Paul Simon fan my entire life and know next to nothing about Disbturbed, and this is easily the best cover I've ever heard of any of his songs. Definitely in the top five of covers, period. Like others have said, it gave me goosebumps and left me with tears in my eyes.
I'm 55 years old and grew up with the song by simon and garfunkel. 95% of the cover versions are garbage, but this version is outstanding. Much better than the original. The powerful voice and the facial expressions touch me to no end. I can't stop listening to this song at full volume.

Paul Simon who wrote this song (and who wrote all the songs-lyrics and music for Simon & Garfunkel) apparently saw Disturbed performing this song on a late night show and contacted the band saying he was very impressed by their "powerful " performance of this song.
I think that most artists don't get upset, when they see another band doing one of their old songs. If anything, it should be flattering to know that your message is still relevant, even if the actual way it is sung, gets updated to a more modern beat and rhythm. In most cases, it is easily recognizable as derived from the original, with many of the basic patterns of notes and melodies being maintained, if slightly altered in tempo and range. This song is a perfect example of that and it goes to show, that another artists vision of the song, can even improve it, from the point of view of the younger generation and sometimes, even the original generation of listeners. However, there will always be those who prefer the original. I like both versions, but Disturbed's version is better, in my opinion. I think the power of the voice behind the message is what Paul recognized. The message was given strength.
Trent Reznor from NIN said the same thing to Johnny Cash about the song "Hurt." At first Reznor was a little put out because of how personal the song was to him but after he heard Cash sing it and saw his video for it he told him this is no longer my song it's yours.
This is a line that with a change in words means a lot to a depressed person like myself, life, is not measured in the number of breaths you take, but the number of moments that take your breath away-benjerman Franklin
Oh shit...I got a whole new meaning out of this cover. His intensity and deepness brought more of a frustrated and angry feel for the state of humanity. I just love how the lyrics are so applicable decades after this song was first written - I have a feeling it will be applicable for years to come.
Liz Xu. I couldn't agree more. Paul Simon rolling into New York at the youbg age of what. 21. When he witnessed and took in, and then wrote of his experiences. Yes more anger and frustration in the state of humanity decades later, sad in itself. When I first heard of this remake I didn't think I would care for it. I was wrong and can't quite listening to it again. Perfect tribute to a genius's work of art.
There will be a time when we'll not sing any songs but still be as frustrated about the state of humanity as you were while listening to this song. That time is near. I only hope that I don't make it to that time ever.
When the original song came out in 1964 I was in the Atlantic on a US Navy Submarine (USS Sailfish SS 572) and could never have imagined that 61 years later I would be listening to this wonderful cover by a guy that wasn’t even born until 1973. WOW. I’m really impressed. What’s more, I’m impressed to still be alive to hear it. LOL

, Hi from Kerala, India. I turn 70 in March 25. I too loved this song and would listen to this and the other Simon & Garfunkel songs over and over. But the Sound of Silence of Disturbed disturbed me and made me look within to my own areas of darkness and depression. I am not considered depressed by general world standards. I do not want to become non living, but many a time I feel sad and lonely even with my caring and loving family all around me. Until I came across Disturbed, I looked down upon the tattooed garishly made up persons I saw on Social media, and the addicts of San Francisco. There are very few like that here in Kerala. Now this song made me understand the struggle each goes through. Not unlike everyone else’s except for the degree, the support etc. I salute Disturbed and it’s lead singer who turned the song into a revelation and an emotional experience. Thank you I see it and listen over and over and sing along in my own weak voice.

@@DavidDraimanMichael Hey David! I grew up in and around the music business. My Dad was a BMI writer, producer and artist in the 1950's. I saw the good, bad and the ugly of the music business during that time and met many legendary artists, many at my dads recording studio. I spent almost as much time on "Recording Row" 16th Avenue in Nashville as I did my own street in dusty West Texas. The only reason I share this is hopefully to add some credence to my admiration of your gift and artistry. . .I have seen and experienced much. I have never been a fan of Metal, but your rendition of Paul's Sound of Silence is transcendent. I have seen artists become "trapped" in a Chandra that fueled their success and for various reasons never explore other musical expressions. I hope you will explore more releases along the line of Rock Anthems. All the Best- D
fourirons213 that just proves that even these heavy metal guys that yell through 90% of their song are much more talented than the bubble gum pop crap and hip hop and r&b where 100% of their music is auto tune. This is coming from a guy who grew up listening and still listens to country.
It's fun to see how many of them can actually sing. The dude from Slipknot can sign his fucking ass off too. Check out Stone Sour.... his other band. It's sorta like this on some tracks.

As a child of the 60's I am very familiar with the original. Paul Simon was foremost a poet. This version brings the force of the words to life. This is not what I'd call a cover. It's the raw interpretation of the poetry! So moving, so forceful, so "disturbing"in these times of division and deception! God help us all!
I'm not a young man. I don't usually listen to this kind of band. But i must say that this is the most moving rendition of this song I've ever heard. And my favorite of all time.

I haven't listened to metal much for a long time but my brother passed this along to me and it blows me away. I think I've replayed it at least a dozen times in the last two days. I always loved the original Simon & Garfunkel version and I never thought anyone could do it better, but man oh man. I get misty-eyed every time I hear it. And judging from the comments I'm not the only one. Words cannot begin to describe how awesome this rendition is, and I am now a Disturbed fan.
+Scott Bieser I love reading the responses from those who grew up with the S&G version or those who loved the original and are impressed with the cover as well. I had heard the original a few times but never really "listened" to the lyrics. This one made me listen, the vocals so powerful with the lyrics. I feel like it reinvents the song for the current time. I can imagine that's how people felt hearing the original the first time. That it fit that time. I have listened to this over and over and so many times. Gives me chills!
+Janice B I think that's a good point. This is a powerful song in any time when it's performed according to the musical tastes of the time. I still love the S&G version because that is my time, but this version is probably the best rendition of it I've ever heard and I hope it speaks to today's generations the way it did 40 years ago.

This song has helped me push through PTSD and depression and had made me carry on. My parents have tried to understand but it is hard for them…the power in this song…it’s beautiful to me and whenever I listen to it, for once everything settles away and I’m just one with the music. He has such a power in his voice that is rarely heard today
First time i've seen the video, what a powerful epic song, think its going to go on my list of all time favourites. Glad this has helped you and hope you are all good, Depression is still a stigma and only understood if you have had it yourself...

This is probably one of the best songs they've ever done thank you Paul Simon for writing this. I listened to this song constantly when I was in the hospital fighting cancer
I get chills every time I listen to it. This cover surpasses the original sung by Simon and Garfunkel. The intensity, the weight of the words break down my barriers. This song, performed this way, uplifts me. It moves me deeply.

***** some real old songs are starting to come back into circulation but as i said this generation think they know music when they don't like what they think is "ROCK" isn't actually ROCK theres a YT channel called the combat veteran he does a video skit exactly like it where his friend gets into his car and puts on "ROCK" look it up.
I agree this generation lacks an appreciation of good music, but genres evolve over time; there are many sub-genres of rock that you may not like but that doesn't mean they're not rock. They might not be a classic rock and roll band, but they still fall under the category of rock because they belong to a sub-genre of it. Unless of course you're talking about genres that are completely separate from rock, in which case I'd agree.
Wow, I just read an article on the BBC about Disturbed and their cover of this beautiful song. I went straight to You Tube and have not stopped repeating it since. This is a brilliant version, with the greatest respect being paid to the original. Good on you for this, I'm 57 and British enjoying the vinyl revive like I was a teen all over again. But this 'The Sound of Silence' by Disturbed is amazing and SPECIAL.

I'm always skeptical when it comes to S&G covers. I tend to regard them as ... almost sacred, not to be messed with... but, this cover - I love it. You totally GET the song. The feeling, the emotion, the meaning, everything. This is truly a magnificent interpretation.
I couldn't disagree more, but repsect you opinion. For me, I think replacing the very REAL and subtle meditation on REAL death, wth the performative (almost pantomime) faux-edgy and faux-dark metal cosplay aesthetics, and straining to seem all doomy.... is absolutely not getting it at all. At all. It's like if Michael Bay directed a remake of 'Apocalypse Now' . I'm sure the intent is heartfelt, but it cheapens the song with overcooked gurning and melodrama.

@@outdoorswitho5 it most definitely is not. Much like Johnny Cash singing Hurt, sometimes a new performance transforms a song into something better. This is one of those songs.

Sherman McClesky You really need to learn what it takes to be a "Rock" or "metal" This rendition has no focus on drums guitar and at best a good voice that borders on screaming like a petulant child,
Metal is defined by who ever listens to it. Metallica is seen as metal by most but is seen as rock by "post core black metal alternative" types. Honestly I see it as if its heavier than Ozzy then it's metal.
Here because my stepdad that died. He treated me better than my actual dad. He was there for me when i was done and everything. This song played at my moms funeral and i remember looking at my mom and just see her burst into tears. This song hits hard
@@fatiguee1s See Genesis, chapter 3 in the Old Testament. It doesn't end there though. The New Testament is all about God's offer of eternal life through his Son, Jesus Christ. Read it, accept it and live! Sorry, no silence here.
Forgetting Iron Maiden? Honestly though David is a fantastic baritone singer that doesn't get nearly enough credit for his voice, early on he made some comments that rubbed people the wrong way and until relatively recently a significant amount of the metalhead community wrongfully wrote him off as a cheesy prick. Fantastic singer and especially these days a really cool guy who isn't afraid to admit his mistakes, mad respect for David.

I don't understand why everyone makes a big deal on where they came from. who cares where you heard it. it's all about loving a truly great remake of a beautiful song and disturbed deserves all the respect and recognition.
This was always one of my all time favourite songs... but this is now my no. 1! Simon & Garfunkel's wonderful mournful song combined with this guy's gritty, angry vocals and arrangement...WOW!!! Few songs stay relevant nearly 55 years on but the song is even more so in these times of bleak urban decay, social media isolation, and a world where extremes of obscene wealth and abject poverty exist side by side. If S& G's original was a sorrow song for their world, this is a scream of rage for ours!!!
+Kent Mains He sure can. Wonder what would happen if you put him side by side next to chester benington (link park lead singer). It would a holy shit moment :)
I didn't expect a music video for this song. I wasn't sure how it could be done without losing the beauty and impact from just the lyrics and music. That's what I get for doubting Disturbed. They always find a way to make it work.
+Mathmachine ROFL!!! I was first introduced to their music when I was at a dangerous point in my life. Since then, I've not only known just how far they can go with it, but I've seen Disturbed in a light that I couldn't possibly explain to some.
+Mathmachine I didn't doubt David's voice, but it still blew me away. His voice makes me prefer this over the original. He has one of the most diverse and unique voices iv'e ever heard.

Hello
Nice math right there!
Hello! 🙌🏼🥳🙏🏻
Hi
Now THAT was worth reading! Absolutely, you are a writer! That was beautiful. I do not have the words to describe what you just described. Brilliant!
I'm in tears. Your comment is SOLID GOLD.😭💝
Beautiful words ❤
Me too born in 63

BELIEVE ME , BUT MOST IMPORTANT , BELIEVE IN YOU ! easy.... a big hug !
We will always walk n talk with you. Life happens in so many different ways. I know. Just keep being and asking. We'll be there. Cuz we know
I’m a pastor and I was driving in my truck listening to the sounds of silence and was overwhelmed by the Holy Spirit and broke into worship !
Fuck god
Indeed pastor, we are in the end times. Many are sleeping, ESPECIALLY THE CHURCH. evil is everywhere and most think it's normal.
@SA-Napalm why put your negativity here? Leave the man alone. Sorry you're so miserable. Keep it to yourself, troll.

The following verse...
And in the naked light, I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never shared
And no one dared
Disturb the sound of silence
The verse makes me think of today with people doing nothing but their heads down texting on their phones, "talking without speaking, hearing without listening".
I am from Hungary, but I feel the same.

The Sound of Silence
Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence
In restless dreams, I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence
And in the naked light, I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never shared
And no one dared
Disturb the sound of silence
"Fools" said I, "You do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you"
But my words, like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
Then the sign said, "The words on the prophets are written on the subway walls In tenement halls"
And whispered in the sound of silence

This version of Simon and Garfunkel's song echoes the times in which we now find ourselves... Dark, disturbing and full of rage.
I love David's voice, absolutely flawless.
I'll respect your privacy, Pardon me for writing in your comment am impressed by your personality. I admire your kind demeanour. I mean It's quite impressive the way you expressed yourself, and I can tell you are an easygoing person someone worth spending time with. sorry if this sounds weird, but I can tell you're a very positive person. If it's okay with you, I'd love to be friends.
Which is why Disturbed's version is so perfect. Unbelievable!

I listened to this cover and had to pull to the side of the road as I was bawling my eyes out. It was cathartic. Thank you for helping me grieve with this song.
Wow! The fact that there is something
God: Would you like to sing like an angel or a demon?

When I was a teenager back in the 70's I recall my dad saying that in 20 years the young people would laugh at my music just like I laughed at his. Now 50 years later I see kids listening to Led Zepplin and wearing Pink Floyd t-shirts and singing "Sound of Silence" I gotta say, Dad (RIP) you know I love you but they don't laugh at our music, they just remake it.

You're absolutely right. I love it.

Sad to say but I actually like this version better than the original and I'm not one for remakes.
It's an awesome take on the original. In fact it's better.

Hello, darkness, my old friend.
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping,
Left its seeds while I was sleeping.
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence.
In restless dreams I walked alone.
Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp.
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence.
And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more.
People talking without speaking.
People hearing without listening.
People writing songs that voices never share.
And no one dare
Disturb the sound of silence.
"Fools," said I, "You do not know:
Silence, like a cancer, grows.
Hear my words that I might teach you.
Take my arms that I might reach you,"
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence.
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made.
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming.
And the sign said,
"The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls.
And whispered in the sound of silence."
Yes.. Simon Garfunkel sure could write songs...
Nice👌

Wow, this is astonishly powerful. I've been a hardcore Paul Simon fan my entire life and know next to nothing about Disbturbed, and this is easily the best cover I've ever heard of any of his songs. Definitely in the top five of covers, period. Like others have said, it gave me goosebumps and left me with tears in my eyes.

Paul Simon who wrote this song (and who wrote all the songs-lyrics and music for Simon & Garfunkel) apparently saw Disturbed performing this song on a late night show and contacted the band saying he was very impressed by their "powerful " performance of this song.
I remember he told disturbed once that "this was his song now, not mine"
@JamesRichmond yeah and David was crying it got emotional
Nowadays , nobody can just cover a song in a late night show without asking the copyright question .
This story seems a bit constructed ...
“The music is not in the notes,
but in the silence between.”
― Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. I think his quote goes perfectly with this song.
That is an incredibly deep quote from an incredibly talented man
i agree with you he was A pure genius!!
This is a line that with a change in words means a lot to a depressed person like myself, life, is not measured in the number of breaths you take, but the number of moments that take your breath away-benjerman Franklin
well said
I bet Mozart hates Jazz.
Oh shit...I got a whole new meaning out of this cover. His intensity and deepness brought more of a frustrated and angry feel for the state of humanity. I just love how the lyrics are so applicable decades after this song was first written - I have a feeling it will be applicable for years to come.
Liz Xu actually the fact that it will still be relevant decades later is what makes it so haunting.
Liz Xu agreed
There will be a time when we'll not sing any songs but still be as frustrated about the state of humanity as you were while listening to this song. That time is near. I only hope that I don't make it to that time ever.
Liz Xu to be fair it kinda pisses me off that this song is still relevant half a century later

Thank you

I love the calmer voices of these heavy metal guys. Idk what it is but it just sounds sooooo good.
fourirons213 that just proves that even these heavy metal guys that yell through 90% of their song are much more talented than the bubble gum pop crap and hip hop and r&b where 100% of their music is auto tune.
This is coming from a guy who grew up listening and still listens to country.
biker932012 Never thought of it that way. There are a few bands out today that are truly talented but they're very hard to find.
It's fun to see how many of them can actually sing. The dude from Slipknot can sign his fucking ass off too. Check out Stone Sour.... his other band. It's sorta like this on some tracks.

An an anthem of sorts!

First time i've seen the video, what a powerful epic song, think its going to go on my list of all time favourites. Glad this has helped you and hope you are all good, Depression is still a stigma and only understood if you have had it yourself...
Makes me cry, also builds me up to face another day. I really hope you're doing better 🙏🙏🙏❤❤❤

This song hits different in 2020 when u get really really depressed
Your right about that
Either way it’s the same
Hits a bit harder huh
yeah, and it helps because I pretend I'm a deep voiced man screaming to this. It's actually quite therapeutic. I'm a girl.
I hear ya there maybe hits harder
I don’t know this singer so I imagined like a death metal sound but man, this is amazing

They are (usually) a heavy metal band
Nu metal or alternative metal. David Draiman has some serious range with his voice

it's like it was written specifically for me. I recently lost my dad, and the pain is still so raw. Thank you for sharing this song... it really touched my heart😢

I'm a huge fan of Simon & Garfunkel and love their version. But THIS!!! Never gets old!! David Draiman's voice is SO intense!
So much power. How can he even breathe singing like that? I can't.
@@GuySmithSmoke I would end up having to stagger breathe just to keep some of his phrases going that are in the higher range while the lower notes get harder for me to fully project out especially on his lowest notes making me feel like I have to sing those notes up an octave to keep them in my comfort zone
Four years later and this still makes me shiver.
Singing along with it gives me goosebumps
This will never get old. Goosebumps every time I hear it.
Ditto!!! Its so deep...get to your soul...need more of this 'real soul' expression...LOVE IT

Its a cover of a old song
Love how the classic old songs keep returning.
The old songs never left. They are there, forever, for you to listen to. What a stupid statement.
technically they ain't this generation barely know they exist
I believe he's referring to how they return to popularity despite all the new stuff that's constantly being released. Not a stupid comment.

Near to 5 million physical viewers so its analogically 200 times per person in 8 years so 2800 days. So 2 views per month?
haha yeah...
I'm always skeptical when it comes to S&G covers. I tend to regard them as ... almost sacred, not to be messed with... but, this cover - I love it. You totally GET the song. The feeling, the emotion, the meaning, everything. This is truly a magnificent interpretation.
the Bangles did a hell of a cover of hazy shade of winter in the 80s
This song was my intro to Simon and Garfunkel way back in their '60s....it meant so much to me then but this is a transformation...POWERFUL!!!!
Agree
I couldn't disagree more, but repsect you opinion. For me, I think replacing the very REAL and subtle meditation on REAL death, wth the performative (almost pantomime) faux-edgy and faux-dark metal cosplay aesthetics, and straining to seem all doomy.... is absolutely not getting it at all. At all. It's like if Michael Bay directed a remake of 'Apocalypse Now' . I'm sure the intent is heartfelt, but it cheapens the song with overcooked gurning and melodrama.

It's rock songs like this, that kills the myth that rock stars only scream, but they don't really sing. Very well done.
*metal
Sherman McClesky
You really need to learn what it takes to be a "Rock" or "metal"
This rendition has no focus on drums guitar and at best a good voice that borders on screaming like a petulant child,
L.S. Pig Sorry not metal NO guitar solo. just screaming.
john smith metal doesn’t necessarily need a guitar solo and it’s not necessarily screaming either. It’s just aggressive sounding music

Why is there something called death :(
So sorry

@@fatiguee1s See Genesis, chapter 3 in the Old Testament. It doesn't end there though. The New Testament is all about God's offer of eternal life through his Son, Jesus Christ. Read it, accept it and live! Sorry, no silence here.
Wow, mixed opera-like singing and a metal vocalist's voice combined...so it really is possible 😮
Most properly trained metal singers can actually.
Nice infos. Thanks guys ❤

David Draiman has such a wonderful voice. Big fan of Disturbed and I love this song.
Ich liebe dieses Lied und die Stimme auch. Einfach nur genial...✌️
Speaks to my heart thx

Um brasileiro aqui amo essa música
Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains... within the sound of silence
In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night... and touched the sound of silence
And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never shared
And no one dared... disturb the sound of silence
"Fools" said I, "you do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you"
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon God they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls"... and whispered in the sound of silence
