    In this Video I attempt a study on the flemish portraiture, using oil as my medium after many years. I explain the nature of oil and discuss the reasons that can make artists love it.
    I hope this video can inspire you to experiment in painting with oil without stress or fear of it, and I aspire to make more videos in the future about it.

      @@PaintingtheLight I am the one that is thankful. You teached me how to paint Romaios iconography, at a moment I was looking for workshops around Europe. And with Cretan tradition that I did not knew, that it is the only one I like. It is all I need.

    Challenge accepted. After I finish this last watercolor, I will use oil exclusively for the next month. I wonder what will happen after a month? It can’t be any harder than watercolors, but we shall see. If I can come up with something a quarter as good as your work I will consider it a success. Thank you for showing us your experiments. Your results are amazing.

    I did some research, and I found the painter of the original! It’s Hans Memling, and the painting is called the Portrait of Tommaso Portinari, c.1470.
    Also, thank you so much for posting this video, it really inspires me to pick up the brush and paint!

    Thank you for sharing your talent with us. It is such a pleasure to see you work. I notice when you are doing the underpainting on the face the paint was running down the face. Was that very dilute oil paint? How do you dilute it?

    Antonis, I love the “eclectic” ethos of the work you share, so I want to share this quote even if it maybe doesn’t refer particularly to this painting. It’s from Thomas Merton:
    If I can unite in myself the thought and devotion of Eastern and Western Christendom, the Greek and the Latin Fathers, the Russian and the Spanish mystics, I can prepare in myself the reunion of divided Christians.
    From that secret and unspoken Unity inside myself can eventually come a visible and manifest unity of all Christians.
    If we want to bring together that which is divided, we cannot do so by imposing one division on top of another. If we do this, the union is not Christian but political and doomed to further conflict. We must contain all the divided worlds in ourselves and transcend them in Christ.
    Thomas Merton, in “Conjectures of a Guilty Bystander.”

    Antonis - How do you prepare your panel for Oil Paint? I prepared a panel using your video - but the surface is too absorbent for Oil Paint. Do you Prime your panel before you paint with Oil?
    Thanks!

    Hi, I have a question. It is said that some painters (like Titian or Van Eyck) executed their painting in two steps: they made a grisaille in egg tempera (or some other form of tempera) and then glazed the final colors with oil, on top of the monochrome tempera painting. Do you think it is possible to do both the grisaille and glazes in egg tempera alone? I did a monochrome study in egg tempera and than tried to glaze it with colors, also in egg tempera, but the colors of the two layers mix (pure red glaze over white highlight becomes pink). Maybe I did not use the correct brush technique? Should I lay the glaze in tiny strokes? Other ideas? I've seen a documentary with Paul Cadmus, an excellent contemporary egg tempera painter where he explains that he builds the volumes in monochrome black and white, then he adds color. So there must be a way.

    • @PaintingtheLight
      @PaintingtheLight  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you so much for this question.... I believe (although I have never paintid in that method) that after doing some careful glazing, you must retouch a little the painting to correct the areas that need to be corrected like the pink highlights in your case. I don't know if there is some other way..... :)

    This is nice, but can you make a separate channel for secular painting than iconography?

    • @PaintingtheLight
      @PaintingtheLight  3 роки тому +8

      That's a great idea but at this point it's impossible.... Besides, this channel explores good painting no matter if it is secular or religious.
