  • My new teachable course on realistic portraits
    painting-the-light.teachable....
In this video I do a study on the Italian Renaissance Painting of the North.
I try to explain the process as thoroughly as possible, and discuss several aspects of it. Painting with Oil is a little tricky for tempera painters but I strongly believe we should try the medium and see if we can learn something by using it.
I want to thank all of you who participate in this channel by asking questions, liking the video and subscribing. its really amazing.

Given your experience with egg tempera, I think you approach oil paint in a way similar to those early renaissance masters who transitioned from tempera to oil themselves. Thus the colors are sharper, clearer and more luminous than let's say, those in baroque paintings. I really like this!

The delicate touch perfected by painting on the tip of his soft sable brushes on icons must surely help him in this wet-on-wet oil portrait. I imagine it would be sooo easy to mix into the layer below and create mud if one didn't possess this controlled and very light touch. Another amazing instructional video with another beautiful result!

Amazing work the italian renaissance is the most beautiful period in art . I would suggest to you to do a painting in grisaille and than add the skin tones i dicoverd that frequently and it really helped me to get the values correct

ah i forgot, i love fayum portraits! This portrait by Moroni has some similarities with them, the vivacity of the gaze, the Mediterranean colors but above all the eyes. Hi!

as always your video was very interesting and useful. About cleaning the brushes in the end I leave them a bit in the fabric softener, the one used for laundry in the washing machine 🙂. They become very soft again. This portrait is very intense and I like that you can see the brushstrokes. I would like to ask you where to send my latest works so as to have your opinion. I also alternate oil with tempera, I love them both. Thank you very much for what you are teaching us. I follow you with real interest. I hope to soon

I'm a dumbass for thinking how accurately you're painting the reference pic. Penny only dropped at the end.
