In this video I paint with egg tempera a fresco by Michelangelo. I try to unlock his method and explain how I painted this beautiful head, step by step. I want to thank my patreon.com supporters as they really get me going. If you find this content helpful, please consider supporting this channel and become a patron!

Thank you so much,
Antonis
See where you have employed not a few techniques to nearly mimic the work of this unparalleled artist. After immersing my readings into the lives of the painter's, by way of Vasari, and realizing just how little is truly known of Michelangelo, there is a great deal missed by not a few more modern writer's than may be guessed. Your work is very studied, and techniques highly polished to get so near the original cartoons' of this man. Thank you.
The experments with technics of old masters are extraordinary, I appreciate your work, Antonis :)
Thank you so much!!
Your channel gets better and better, it's like you're reading my mind! Great tutorial! Keep them coming!
Thank you Leonida!!! You re great!
Really beautiful!! It's so wonderful to see the painting suddenly come to life when you start painting the lights. I remember how shocked everyone was when the Sistine chapel ceiling was cleaned - the colors were so stunning!! And all the details that were revealed were amazing too. A lovely exercise, thank you for sharing it with us!
Thank you soo much Katherine!!! Nice comment!
katherine noggle: Yes even few ''art experts'' all the time stated: that Michelangelo wasnt a colorful bright painter, and much more of a figurative expressive painter , using dull dark colors to lay the focus not on colors, but on the idea/the composition. Sure not every art expert said this - but a lot, if not even the most. Their assumption was maybe fed by Michelangelo itself, because Michelangelo himself once said : ''In my opinion a painting is the better the more it comes near to a sculpture, and vice versa a sculpture is the worser the more it comes near to the impression of a painting.''
So when the Sistine chapel was cleaned a lot of people were surprised how rich of colors Michelangelo really was. It gave his whole artwork a absolutely different expression, even if it was still not ''less Michelangelo''.
Thanks you so much for sharing. Wonderful work, please, continue...
THIS IS SO INCREDIBLY HELPFUL! i’m studying Michelangelo’s technique for my senior project and this is the best example i have found! thank you so much for making this video!❤
I love these videos, I do hope you do a video on how you physically manage and organize your pigments and palette for egg tempera. I can mix oils all day long, but these powdered pigments are quite different, especially the fact that everything drys so quickly.
Great video! That's so interesting how the colors in your study work optically, so that the green in the beginning starts to look flesh color even though you didn't touch the shadow parts at all with the warm flesh tone and you didn't even add any darker warm colors to the shadows and still they look great.
I'm a painter myself too, though not iconographer, more like trying to paint in a classical manner. But it's so interesting how much in common the classical techniques have with the icon techniques. Well, I guess El Greco is a great example, he started as iconographer.
Your video gave me great ideas to painting in classical manner. Thank you 😊👍
Thank you Soo much Henry for the great comment!!!! I'm glad if you found the video helpful!
Your painting is so amazing that I decided to make a drawing with “sanguigna” pencil. You inspired me ❤. (Greetings from Italy). 🇮🇹

Hello! I’ve recently been interested in painting! I’ve never really done it, except when I used to take clases, but it wasn’t really the type of paintings I was interested in. My family is very artistic and likes to paint, and I’d love to learn as well. Also, this is amazing!
A lot of valuable imformation on painting.

I traveled Italy and when I returned home, people asked what was my favorite part. I always responded “Michelangelo”. Thank you for your demonstration.

Amazing as always.. wanted to ask how i can prepare my board for egg tempura if the materials are not available in my country
Thanks for sharing! Do you xerox the reference? and how do you transfer on board? please talk about process. thanks!
Did you know that El Greco offered to repaint the sistine Chapel cieling for the pope. It would have been interesting to see what he would have done with it, as i prefer El Grecos work to Michelangelos.
Thanks for commenting! But why to lose the amazing froscos of Michelangelo too! El Greco could have offered to paint a completely other Chapel!
👍👍👍
Very beautiful and inspiring - Michelangelo was always one of my favourite artists. Great job! ✨👌🙏
amazing! gives me motivation to start painting
Absolutely beautiful work antonis well done bravo. Can you paint the baptism of Christ by a early renaissance artist named Giotto thanks!❤️😊👌
Thank you Philippe for the great idea.... At some point I will!
Hi Antonis, can you tell me the name of the colour you use for base skin tone - sounds like you are saying perposs moss?
Καλησπέρα...Πως θα μπορούσα να αρχίσω την εξάσκηση μου για να ζωγραφίζω το δέρμα στα πρόσωπα;;
Amazing work! I have a question: where do you get egg tempera?
If I don’t have access to it, can I use oil paint?
Thank you for asking! You make egg tempera using egg yolk and water and vinegar. I have a video how to do that. Then you mix that solution with powdered pigments.
Molto interessante la tecnica..mi piacerebbe conoscere i colori che usi per la base le luci e ombre..grazie purtroppo non conosco l inglese..buona serata
How do you prep your panels for painting? Do you use rabbit skin glue on wood?
Yes.. I make a gesso from rabbit skin glue and prapare the boards. Thank you soo much!
What's the name of the "greenish brown" layer you apply before entering with the lights? It's something beggining with "P" but I can't understand it
Can you paint oils on top of egg tempera?
Are the line work and first shades of gray washes egg tempera or india ink?
Egg tempera!
May I ask which exact pigments and manufacturer of the paints you have used for this study? Grazie!
The green
The pink
The white
The black
Etc
How does it smell? For what I know, egg tempera use egg so...?
Plsss paint the mona lisa or john the babtis or eney other work of leonardo da vinci
I will at some point paint Mona LIsa! Thank you so much for commenting!
Are you using Oil Paint for this?
This is egg tempera!
@@PaintingtheLight can pil paint work on this technique?
Color’s?
What is the name of the painting?
Way, cual? Angel Miguel?
🤔
Why not skip first step? Why not first paint surface with greenish brown, at least some of it where the character will be. Then draw the character only once and then paint the background.
Right now you draw the character, paint over it, and draw it again. You draw it twice.
Well, either way, you have great skills. And I thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. I too love Michelangelo's work.
Why did you chose a subject that Michelangelo painted with technique of fresco? It is a different technique.
создаётся впечатление что на какое то лицо надели красивую маску? (нет плавного перехода от лика к скуле и уху) а сам лик великолепен!!!
non è la tecnica di Michelangelo
Thank you for the comment! The material is egg tempera here not fresco of course. But I'm pretty positive the process is something very similar. Let me know if you thi k otherwise and how so.
